Factorization presentations

Modules over a vertex operator algebra V give rise to sheaves of coinvariants on moduli of stable pointed curves. If V satisfies finiteness and semi-simplicity conditions, these sheaves are vector bundles. This relies on factorization, an isomorphism of spaces of coinvariants at a nodal curve with a finite sum of analogous spaces on the normalization of the curve. Here we introduce the notion of a factorization presentation, and using this, we show that finiteness conditions on V imply the sheaves of coinvariants are coherent on moduli spaces of pointed stable curves without any assumption of semisimplicity.

Period-index bounds for arithmetic threefolds

The standard period-index conjecture for the Brauer group of a field of transcendence degree 2 over a $p$-adic field predicts that the index divides the cube of the period. Using Gabber's theory of prime-to-$\ell$ alterations and the deformation theory of twisted sheaves, we prove that the index divides the fourth power of the period for every Brauer class whose period is prime to $6p$, giving the first uniform period-index bounds over such fields.

Local-global principles for torsors over arithmetic curves

We consider local-global principles for torsors under linear algebraic groups, over function fields of curves over complete discretely valued fields. The obstruction to such a principle is a version of the Tate-Shafarevich group; and for groups with rational components, we compute it explicitly and show that it is finite. This yields necessary and sufficient conditions for local-global principles to hold. Our results rely on first obtaining a Mayer-Vietoris sequence for Galois cohomology and then showing that torsors can be patched. We also give new applications to quadratic forms and central simple algebras.

Derived categories of torsors for abelian schemes

In the first part of our paper, we show that there exist non-isomorphic derived equivalent genus $1$ curves, and correspondingly there exist non-isomorphic moduli spaces of stable vector bundles on genus $1$ curves in general. Neither occurs over an algebraically closed field. We give necessary and sufficient conditions for two genus $1$ curves to be derived equivalent, and we go on to study when two principal homogeneous spaces for an abelian variety have equivalent derived categories. We apply our results to study twisted derived equivalences of the form $D^b(J,α)\simeq D^b(J,β)$, when $J$ is an elliptic fibration, giving a partial answer to a question of Căldăraru.

Local-global principles for Galois cohomology

This paper proves local-global principles for Galois cohomology groups over function fields $F$ of curves that are defined over a complete discretely valued field. We show in particular that such principles hold for $H^n(F, Z/mZ(n-1))$, for all $n>1$. This is motivated by work of Kato and others, where such principles were shown in related cases for $n=3$. Using our results in combination with cohomological invariants, we obtain local-global principles for torsors and related algebraic structures over $F$. Our arguments rely on ideas from patching as well as the Bloch-Kato conjecture.

Weierstrass preparation and algebraic invariants

We prove a form of the Weierstrass Preparation Theorem for normal algebraic curves over complete discrete valuation rings. While the more traditional algebraic form of Weierstrass Preparation applies just to the projective line over a base, our version allows more general curves. This result is then used to obtain applications concerning the values of u-invariants, and on the period-index problem for division algebras, over fraction fields of complete two-dimensional rings. Our approach uses patching methods and matrix factorization results that can be viewed as analogs of Cartan's Lemma.

Relative Brauer groups of genus 1 curves

In this paper we develop techniques for computing the relative Brauer group of curves, focusing particularly on the case where the genus is 1. We use these techniques to show that the relative Brauer group may be infinite (for certain ground fields) as well as to determine this group explicitly for certain curves defined over the rational numbers. To connect to previous descriptions of relative Brauer groups in the literature, we describe a family of genus 1 curves, which we call "cyclic type" for which the relative Brauer group can be shown to have a particularly nice description. In order to do this, we discuss a number of formulations of the pairing between the points on an elliptic curve and its Weil-Chatêlet group into the Brauer group of the ground field, and draw connections to the period-index problem for genus 1 curves.
