Soliton transport in tubular networks: transmission at vertices in the shrinking limit

Soliton transport in tube-like networks is studied by solving the nonlinear Schroedinger equation (NLSE) on finite thickness ("fat") graphs. The dependence of the solution and of the reflection at vertices on the graph thickness and on the angle between its bonds is studied and related to a special case considered in our previous work, in the limit when the thickness of the graph goes to zero. It is found that both the wave function and reflection coefficient reproduce the regime of reflectionless vertex transmission studied in our previous work.

The plasmonic eigenvalue problem

A plasmon of a bounded domain Ω⊂RnΩ\subset\mathbb{R}^n is a non-trivial bounded harmonic function on Rn∖∂Ω\mathbb{R}^n\setminus\partialΩ which is continuous at ∂Ω\partialΩ and whose exterior and interior normal derivatives at ∂Ω\partialΩ have a constant ratio. We call this ratio a plasmonic eigenvalue of ΩΩ. Plasmons arise in the description of electromagnetic waves hitting a metallic particle ΩΩ. We investigate these eigenvalues and prove that they form a sequence of numbers converging to one. Also, we prove regularity of plasmons, derive a variational characterization, and prove a second order perturbation formula. The problem can be reformulated in terms of Dirichlet-Neumann operators, and as a side result we derive a formula for the shape derivative of these operators.

A Parametrix Construction for the Laplacian on Q-rank 1 Locally Symmetric Space

This paper presents the construction of parametrices for the Gauss-Bonnet and Hodge Laplace operators on noncompact manifolds modelled on Q-rank 1 locally symmetric spaces. These operators are, up to a scalar factor, ϕϕ-differential operators, that is, they live in the generalised ϕϕ-calculus studied by the authors in a previous paper, which extends work of Melrose and Mazzeo. However, because they are not totally elliptic elements in this calculus, it is not possible to construct parametrices for these operators within the ϕϕ-calculus. We construct parametrices for them in this paper using a combination of the bb-pseudodifferential operator calculus of R. Melrose and the ϕϕ-pseudodifferential operator calculus. The construction simplifies and generalizes the construction done by Vaillant in his thesis for the Dirac operator. In addition, we study the mapping properties of these operators and determine the appropriate Hlibert spaces between which the Gauss-Bonnet and Hodge Laplace operators are Fredholm. Finally, we establish regularity results for elements of the kernels of these operators.

Hearing the shape of a triangle

In 1966 Mark Kac asked the famous question 'Can one hear the shape of a drum?'. While this was later shown to be false in general, it was proved by C. Durso that one can hear the shape of a triangle. After an introduction to the general inverse spectral problem we will give a new proof of this fact. The central point of the argument is to show that area, perimeter and the sum of the reciprocals of the angles determine a triangle uniquely. This is proved using convexity arguments and the partial fraction expansion of sin⁡−2x\sin^{-2}x.

Perturbation theory for plasmonic eigenvalues

We develop a perturbative approach for calculating, within the quasistatic approximation, the shift of surface resonances in response to a deformation of a dielectric volume. Our strategy is based on the conversion of the homogeneous system for the potential which determines the plasmonic eigenvalues into an inhomogeneous system for the potential's derivative with respect to the deformation strength, and on the exploitation of the corresponding compatibility condition. The resulting general expression for the first-order shift is verified for two explicitly solvable cases, and for a realistic example of a deformed nanosphere. It can be used for scanning the huge parameter space of possible shape fluctuations with only quite small computational effort.

Spectra of graph neighborhoods and scattering

Let (Gε)ε>0(G_ε)_{ε>0} be a family of 'εε-thin' Riemannian manifolds modeled on a finite metric graph GG, for example, the εε-neighborhood of an embedding of GG in some Euclidean space with straight edges. We study the asymptotic behavior of the spectrum of the Laplace-Beltrami operator on GεG_ε as ε→0ε\to 0, for various boundary conditions. We obtain complete asymptotic expansions for the kkth eigenvalue and the eigenfunctions, uniformly for k≤Cε−1k\leq Cε^{-1}, in terms of scattering data on a non-compact limit space. We then use this to determine the quantum graph which is to be regarded as the limit object, in a spectral sense, of the family (Gε)(G_ε). Our method is a direct construction of approximate eigenfunctions from the scattering and graph data, and use of a priori estimates to show that all eigenfunctions are obtained in this way.

Local Geometry of Singular Real Analytic Surfaces

Let V be a compact real analytic surface with isolated singularities embedded in RNR^N, and assume its smooth part is equipped with a Riemannian metric that is induced from some analytic Riemannian metric on RNR^N. We prove: 1. Each point of V has a neighborhood which is quasi-isometric (naturally and 'almost isometrically') to a union of metric cones and horns, glued at their tips. 2. A full asymptotic expansion, for any p∈Vp\in V, of the length of $V\cap\{q:\dist(q,p)=r\}$ as r tends to zero. 3. A Gauss-Bonnet Theorem, saying that horns do not contribute an extra term, while cones contribute the leading coefficient in the length expansion of 2. 4. The L2L^2 Stokes Theorem, self-adjointness and discreteness of the Laplace-Beltrami operator on the smooth part, and a Gauss-Bonnet Theorem for the L2L^2 Euler characteristic. As a central tool we use resolution of singularities.
