Scattering of the asymmetric $ϕ^6$ kinks from a $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric perturbation: Creation of multiple pairs of kink-antikink from phonons

Interaction of asymmetric $ϕ^6$ kinks with a spatially localized $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric perturbation is investigated numerically. It has been shown that when the kink (antikink) hits the defect from the gain side, a final velocity of the kink decreases (increases), while for the kink and antikink coming from the opposite direction their final velocities remain unchanged. It is also found that when the kink interacts with the defect from the gain side multiple pair of the kink-antikink are formed from small amplitude waves (phonons) in the final states depending on the initial velocity of the initial kink and parameter of the perturbation.

Collision of $ϕ^4$ kinks free of the Peierls-Nabarro barrier in the regime of strong discreteness

The two major effects observed in collisions of the continuum $ϕ^4$ kinks are (i) the existence of critical collision velocity above which the kinks always emerge from the collision and (ii) the existence of the escape windows for multi-bounce collisions with the velocity below the critical one, associated with the energy exchange between the kink's internal and translational modes. The potential merger (for sufficiently low collision speeds) of the kink and antikink produces a bion with oscillation frequency $ω_B$, which constantly radiates energy, since its higher harmonics are always within the phonon spectrum. Similar effects have been observed in the discrete $ϕ^4$ kink-antikink collisions for relatively weak discreteness. Here we analyze kinks colliding with their mirror image antikinks in the regime of strong discreteness considering an exceptional discretization of the $ϕ^4$ field equation where the static Peierls-Nabarro potential is precisely zero and the not-too-fast kinks can propagate practically radiating no energy. Several new effects are observed in this case, originating from the fact that the phonon band width is small for strongly discrete lattices and for even higher discreteness an inversion of the phonon spectrum takes place with the short waves becoming low-frequency waves. When the phonon band is narrow, not a bion but a discrete breather with frequency $ω_{DB}$ and all higher harmonics outside the phonon band is formed. When the phonon spectrum is inverted, the kink and antikink become mutually repulsive solitary waves with oscillatory tails, and their collision is possible only for velocities above a threshold value sufficient to overcome their repulsion.

High energy density spots and production of kink-antikink pairs in particle collisions

The maximal energy density that can be achieved in the collisions of the particle-like wave trains in the $ϕ^4$ model has been investigated numerically for different wave train parameters. From these results the prediction is made on how many kink-antikink pairs can be produced in wave train collisions taking into account that in collision of $N$ kinks maximal energy density is equal to $N^2/2$ for even $N$. Our numerical results are in a reasonably good agreement with the predicted maximal number of kink-antikink pairs formed in wave train collisions.

High energy density in multi-soliton collisions

Solitons are very effective in transporting energy over great distances and collisions between them can produce high energy density spots of relevance to phase transformations, energy localization and defect formation among others. It is then important to study how energy density accumulation scales in multi-soliton collisions. In this study, we demonstrate that the maximal energy density that can be achieved in collision of $N$ slowly moving kinks and antikinks in the integrable sine-Gordon field, remarkably, is proportional to $N^2$, while the total energy of the system is proportional to $N$. This maximal energy density can be achieved only if the difference between the number of colliding kinks and antikinks is minimal, i.e., is equal to 0 for even $N$ and 1 for odd $N$ and if the pattern involves an alternating array of kinks and anti-kinks. Interestingly, for odd (even) $N$ the maximal energy density appears in the form of potential (kinetic) energy, while kinetic (potential) energy is equal to zero. The results of the present study rely on the analysis of the exact multi-soliton solutions for $N=1,2,$ and 3 and on the numerical simulation results for $N=4,5,6,$ and 7. Based on these results one can speculate that the soliton collisions in the sine-Gordon field can, in principle, controllably produce very high energy density. This can have important consequences for many physical phenomena described by the Klein-Gordon equations.

Interaction of sine-Gordon kinks and breathers with a $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric defect

The scattering of kinks and low-frequency breathers of the nonlinear sine-Gordon (SG) equation on a spatially localized $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric perturbation (defect) with a balanced gain and loss is investigated numerically. It is demonstrated that if a kink passes the defect, it always restores its initial momentum and energy and the only effect of the interaction with the defect is a phase shift of the kink. A kink approaching the defect from the gain side always passes, while in the opposite case it must have sufficiently large initial momentum to pass through the defect instead of being trapped in the loss region. The kink phase shift and critical velocity are calculated with the use of the collective variable method. Kink-kink (kink-antikink) collisions at the defect are also briefly considered, showing how their pairwise repulsive (respectively, attractive) interaction can modify the collisional outcome of a single kink within the pair with the defect. For the breather, the result of its interaction with the defect strongly depends on the breather parameters (velocity, frequency and initial phase) and on the defect parameters. The breather can gain some energy from the defect and as a result potentially even split into a kink-antikink pair or it can lose a part of its energy. Interestingly, the breather translational mode is very weakly affected by the dissipative perturbation, so that a breather penetrates more easily through the defect when it comes from the lossy side, than a kink. In all studied soliton-defect interactions the energy loss to radiation of small-amplitude extended waves is negligible.

Collective-coordinate analysis of inhomogeneous nonlinear Klein-Gordon field theory

Two different sets of collective-coordinate equations for solitary solutions of Nonlinear Klein-Gordon (NKG) model is introduced. The collective-coordinate equations are derived using different approaches for adding the inhomogeneities as exrernal potentials to the soliton equation of motion. Interaction of the NKG field with a local inhomogeneity like a delta function potential wall and also delta function potential well is investigated using the presented collective-coordinate equations and the results of two different models are compared. Most of the characters of the interaction are derived analytically. Analytical results are also compared with the results of numerical simulations.

Soliton-potential interaction in the nonlinear Klein-Gordon model

The interaction of solitons with external potentials in nonlinear Klein-Gordon field theory is investigated using an improved model. The presented model has been constructed with a better approximation for adding the potential to the Lagrangian through the metric of background space-time. The results of the model are compared with another model and the differences are discussed.
