Phase transition of eigenvalues in deformed Ginibre ensembles

Consider a random matrix of size $N$ as an additive deformation of the complex Ginibre ensemble under a deterministic matrix $X_0$ with a finite rank, independent of $N$. When some eigenvalues of $X_0$ separate from the unit disk, outlier eigenvalues may appear asymptotically in the same locations, and their fluctuations exhibit surprising phenomena that highly depend on the Jordan canonical form of $X_0$. These findings are largely due to Benaych-Georges and Rochet \cite{BR}, Bordenave and Capitaine \cite{BC16}, and Tao \cite{Ta13}. When all eigenvalues of $X_0$ lie inside the unit disk, we prove that local eigenvalue statistics at the spectral edge form a new class of determinantal point processes, for which correlation kernels are characterized in terms of the repeated erfc integrals. This thus completes a non-Hermitian analogue of the BBP phase transition in Random Matrix Theory. Similar results hold for the deformed real quaternion Ginibre ensemble.

On $H^{2|2}$ Isomorphism theorems and reinforced loop soup

We show that supersymmetric (susy) hyperbolic isomorphism theorems that relate Vertex Reinforced Jump Processes and $H^{2|2}$ field, introduced in [2] and [3], are annealed version of isomorphism theorems relating Markov processes and Gaussian free field, with the help of a Bayes formula that relates susy hyperbolic field to susy free field. On the other hand, we also prove a BFS-Dynkin's isomorphism theorem for reinforced loop soup. Moreover, we provide yet another proof of BFS-Dynkin's isomorphism for VRJP a la Feynman-Kac.

Bulk and soft-edge universality for singular values of products of Ginibre random matrices

It has been shown by Akemann, Ipsen and Kieburg that the squared singular values of products of $M$ rectangular random matrices with independent complex Gaussian entries are distributed according to a determinantal point process with a correlation kernel that admits a representation in terms of Meijer G-functions. We prove the universality of the local statistics of the squared singular values, namely, the bulk universality given by the sine kernel and the edge universality given by the Airy kernel. The proof is based on the asymptotic analysis for the double contour integral representation of the correlation kernel. Our strategy can be generalized to deal with other models of products of random matrices introduced recently and to establish similar universal results. Two more examples are investigated, one is the product of $M$ Ginibre matrices and the inverse of $K$ Ginibre matrices studied by Forrester, and the other one is the product of $M-1$ Ginibre matrices with one truncated unitary matrix considered by Kuijlaars and Stivigny.

Singular values for products of complex Ginibre matrices with a source: hard edge limit and phase transition

The singular values squared of the random matrix product $Y = G_r G_{r-1} \cdots G_1 (G_0 + A)$, where each $G_j$ is a rectangular standard complex Gaussian matrix while $A$ is non-random, are shown to be a determinantal point process with correlation kernel given by a double contour integral. When all but finitely many eigenvalues of $A^*A$ are equal to $bN$, the kernel is shown to admit a well-defined hard edge scaling, in which case a critical value is established and a phase transition phenomenon is observed. More specifically, the limiting kernel in the subcritical regime of $0<b<1$ is independent of $b$, and is in fact the same as that known for the case $b=0$ due to Kuijlaars and Zhang. The critical regime of $b=1$ allows for a double scaling limit by choosing $b = (1-τ/\sqrt{N})^{-1}$, and for this the critical kernel and outlier phenomenon are established. In the simplest case $r=0$, which is closely related to non-intersecting squared Bessel paths, a distribution corresponding to the finite shifted mean LUE is proven to be the scaling limit in the supercritical regime of $b>1$ with two distinct scaling rates. Similar results also hold true for the random matrix product $T_r T_{r-1} \cdots T_1 (G_0 + A)$, with each $T_j$ being a truncated unitary matrix.

Universality for products of random matrices I: Ginibre and truncated unitary cases

Recently, the joint probability density functions of complex eigenvalues for products of independent complex Ginibre matrices have been explicitly derived as determinantal point processes. We express truncated series coming from the correlation kernels as multivariate integrals with singularity and investigate saddle point method for such a type of integrals. As an application, we prove that the eigenvalue correlation functions have the same scaling limits as those of the single complex Ginibre ensemble, both in the bulk and at the edge of the spectrum. We also prove that the similar results hold true for products of independent truncated unitary matrices.

Equilibrium problems for Raney densities

The Raney numbers are a class of combinatorial numbers generalising the Fuss--Catalan numbers. They are indexed by a pair of positive real numbers $(p,r)$ with $p>1$ and $0 < r \le p$, and form the moments of a probability density function. For certain $(p,r)$ the latter has the interpretation as the density of squared singular values for certain random matrix ensembles, and in this context equilibrium problems characterising the Raney densities for $(p,r) = (θ+1,1)$ and $(θ/2+1,1/2)$ have recently been proposed. Using two different techniques --- one based on the Wiener--Hopf method for the solution of integral equations and the other on an analysis of the algebraic equation satisfied by the Green's function --- we establish the validity of the equilibrium problems for general $θ> 0$ and similarly use both methods to identify the equilibrium problem for $(p,r) = (θ/q+1,1/q)$, $θ> 0$ and $q \in \mathbb Z^+$. The Wiener--Hopf method is used to extend the latter to parameters $(p,r) = (θ/q + 1, m+ 1/q)$ for $m$ a non-negative integer, and also to identify the equilibrium problem for a family of densities with moments given by certain binomial coefficients.

Limits for circular Jacobi beta-ensembles

Bourgade, Nikeghbali and Rouault recently proposed a matrix model for the circular Jacobi $β$-ensemble, which is a generalization of the Dyson circular $β$-ensemble but equipped with an additional parameter $b$, and further studied its limiting spectral measure. We calculate the scaling limits for expected products of characteristic polynomials of circular Jacobi $β$-ensembles. For the fixed constant $b$, the resulting limit near the spectrum singularity is proven to be a new multivariate function. When $b=βNd/2$, the scaling limits in the bulk and at the soft edge agree with those of the Hermite (Gaussian), Laguerre (Chiral) and Jacobi $β$-ensembles proved in the joint work with P Desrosiers "Asymptotics for products of characteristic polynomials in classical beta-ensembles", Constr. Approx. 39 (2014), arXiv:1112.1119v3. As corollaries, for even $β$ the scaling limits of point correlation functions for the ensemble are given. Besides, a transition from the spectrum singularity to the soft edge limit is observed as $b$ goes to infinity. The positivity of two special multivariate hypergeometric functions, which appear as one factor of the joint eigenvalue densities for spiked Jacobi/Wishart $β$-ensembles and Gaussian $β$-ensembles with source, will also be shown.

Raney distributions and random matrix theory

Recent works have shown that the family of probability distributions with moments given by the Fuss-Catalan numbers permit a simple parameterized form for their density. We extend this result to the Raney distribution which by definition has its moments given by a generalization of the Fuss-Catalan numbers. Such computations begin with an algebraic equation satisfied by the Stieltjes transform, which we show can be derived from the linear differential equation satisfied by the characteristic polynomial of random matrix realizations of the Raney distribution. For the Fuss-Catalan distribution, an equilibrium problem characterizing the density is identified. The Stieltjes transform for the limiting spectral density of the singular values squared of the matrix product formed from $q$ inverse standard Gaussian matrices, and $s$ standard Gaussian matrices, is shown to satisfy a variant of the algebraic equation relating to the Raney distribution. Supported on $(0,\infty)$, we show that it too permits a simple functional form upon the introduction of an appropriate choice of parameterisation. As an application, the leading asymptotic form of the density as the endpoints of the support are approached is computed, and is shown to have some universal features.

Scaling limits of correlations of characteristic polynomials for the Gaussian beta-ensemble with external source

We study the averaged product of characteristic polynomials of large random matrices in the Gaussian beta-ensemble perturbed by an external source of finite rank. We prove that at the edge of the spectrum, the limiting correlations involve two families of multivariate functions of Airy and Gaussian types. The precise form of the limiting correlations depends on the strength of the nonzero eigenvalues of the external source. A critical value for the latter is obtained and a phase transition phenomenon similar to that of arXiv:math/0403022 is established. The derivation of our results relies mainly on previous articles by the authors, which deal with duality formulas arXiv:0801.3438 and asymptotics for Selberg-type integrals arXiv:1112.1119v3.

Asymptotics for products of characteristic polynomials in classical $β$-Ensembles

We study the local properties of eigenvalues for the Hermite (Gaussian), Laguerre (Chiral) and Jacobi $β$-ensembles of $N\times N$ random matrices. More specifically, we calculate scaling limits of the expectation value of products of characteristic polynomials as $N\to\infty$. In the bulk of the spectrum of each $β$-ensemble, the same scaling limit is found to be $e^{p_{1}}{}_1F_{1}$ whose exact expansion in terms of Jack polynomials is well known. The scaling limit at the soft edge of the spectrum for the Hermite and Laguerre $β$-ensembles is shown to be a multivariate Airy function, which is defined as a generalized Kontsevich integral. As corollaries, when $β$ is even, scaling limits of the $k$-point correlation functions for the three ensembles are obtained. The asymptotics of the multivariate Airy function for large and small arguments is also given. All the asymptotic results rely on a generalization of Watson's lemma and the steepest descent method for integrals of Selberg type.

A note on eigenvalues of random block Toeplitz matrices with slowly growing bandwidth

This paper can be thought of as a remark of \cite{llw}, where the authors studied the eigenvalue distribution $μ_{X_N}$ of random block Toeplitz band matrices with given block order $m$. In this note we will give explicit density functions of $\lim\limits_{N\to\infty}μ_{X_N}$ when the bandwidth grows slowly. In fact, these densities are exactly the normalized one-point correlation functions of $m\times m$ Gaussian unitary ensemble (GUE for short). The series $\{\lim\limits_{N\to\infty}μ_{X_N}|m\in\mathbb{N}\}$ can be seen as a transition from the standard normal distribution to semicircle distribution. We also show a similar relationship between GOE and block Toeplitz band matrices with symmetric blocks.

Selberg Integrals, Super hypergeometric functions and Applications to $β$-Ensembles of Random Matrices

We study a new Selberg-type integral with $n+m$ indeterminates, which turns out to be related to the deformed Calogero-Sutherland systems. We show that the integral satisfies a holonomic system of $n+m$ non-symmetric linear partial differential equations. We also prove that a particular hypergeometric function defined in terms of super Jack polynomials is the unique solution of the system. Some properties such as duality relations, integral formulas, Pfaff-Euler and Kummer transformations are also established. As a direct application, we evaluate the expectation value of ratios of characteristic polynomials in the classical $β$-ensembles of Random Matrix Theory.

Fluctuation of Eigenvalues for Random Toeplitz and Related Matrices

Consider random symmetric Toeplitz matrices $T_{n}=(a_{i-j})_{i,j=1}^{n}$ with matrix entries $a_{j}, j=0,1,2,...,$ being independent real random variables such that \be \mathbb{E}[a_{j}]=0, \ \ \mathbb{E}[|a_{j}|^{2}]=1 \ \ \textrm{for}\,\ \ j=0,1,2,...,\ee (homogeneity of 4-th moments) \be{κ=\mathbb{E}[|a_{j}|^{4}],}\ee \noindent and further (uniform boundedness)\be\sup\limits_{j\geq 0} \mathbb{E}[|a_{j}|^{k}]=C_{k}<\iy\ \ \ \textrm{for} \ \ \ k\geq 3.\ee Under the assumption of $a_{0}\equiv 0$, we prove a central limit theorem for linear statistics of eigenvalues for a fixed polynomial with degree $\geq 2$. Without the assumption, the CLT can be easily modified to a possibly non-normal limit law. In a special case where $a_{j}$'s are Gaussian, the result has been obtained by Chatterjee for some test functions. Our derivation is based on a simple trace formula for Toeplitz matrices and fine combinatorial analysis. Our method can apply to other related random matrix models, including Hankel matrices and product of several Toeplitz matrices in a flavor of free probability theory etc. Since Toeplitz matrices are quite different from the Wigner and Wishart matrices, our results enrich this topic.

Limit Distributions of Eigenvalues for Random Block Toeplitz and Hankel Matrices

Block Toeplitz and Hankel matrices arise in many aspects of applications. In this paper, we will research the distributions of eigenvalues for some models and get the semicircle law. Firstly we will give trace formulae of block Toeplitz and Hankel matrix. Then we will prove that the almost sure limit $γ_{_T}^{(m)}$ $(γ_{_H}^{(m)})$ of eigenvalue distributions of random block Toeplitz (Hankel) matrices exist and give the moments of the limit distributions where $m$ is the order of the blocks. Then we will prove the existence of almost sure limit of eigenvalue distributions of random block Toeplitz and Hankel band matrices and give the moments of the limit distributions. Finally we will prove that $γ_{_T}^{(m)}$ $(γ_{_H}^{(m)})$ converges weakly to the semicircle law as $m\ra\iy$.

Smallest eigenvalue distribution of the fixed trace Laguerre beta-ensemble

In this paper we study entanglement of the reduced density matrix of a bipartite quantum system in a random pure state. It transpires that this involves the computation of the smallest eigenvalue distribution of the fixed trace Laguerre ensemble of $N\times N$ random matrices. We showed that for finite $N$ the smallest eigenvalue distribution may be expressed in terms of Jack polynomials. Furthermore, based on the exact results, we found, a limiting distribution, when the smallest eigenvalue is suitably scaled with $N$ followed by a large $N$ limit. Our results turn out to be the same as the smallest eigenvalue distribution of the classical Laguerre ensembles without the fixed trace constraint. This suggests in a broad sense, the global constraint does not influence local correlations, at least, in the large $N$ limit. Consequently, we have solved an open problem: The determination of the smallest eigenvalue distribution of the reduced density matrix---obtained by tracing out the environmental degrees of freedom---for a bipartite quantum system of unequal dimensions.

Some Universal Properties for Restricted Trace Gaussian Orthogonal, Unitary and Symplectic Ensembles

Consider fixed and bounded trace Gaussian orthogonal, unitary and symplectic ensembles, closely related to Gaussian ensembles without any constraint. For three restricted trace Gaussian ensembles, we prove universal limits of correlation functions at zero and at the edge of the spectrum edge. In addition, by using the universal result in the bulk for fixed trace Gaussian unitary ensemble, which has been obtained by G$\ddot{o}$tze and Gordin, we also prove universal limits of correlation functions for bounded trace Gaussian unitary ensemble.

Fixed trace $β$-Hermite ensembles: Asymptotic eigenvalue density and the edge of the density

In the present paper, fixed trace $β$-Hermite ensembles generalizing the fixed trace Gaussian Hermite ensemble are considered. For all $β$, we prove the Wigner semicircle law for these ensembles by using two different methods: one is the moment equivalence method with the help of the matrix model for general $β$, the other is to use asymptotic analysis tools. At the edge of the density, we prove that the edge scaling limit for $β$-HE implies the same limit for fixed trace $β$-Hermite ensembles. Consequently, explicit limit can be given for fixed trace GOE, GUE and GSE. Furthermore, for even $β$, analogous to $β$-Hermite ensembles, a multiple integral of the Konstevich type can be obtained.
