On a probabilistic extension of the Oldenburger-Kolakoski sequence

The Oldenburger-Kolakoski sequence is the only infinite sequence over the alphabet $\{1,2\}$ that starts with $1$ and is its own run-length encoding. In the present work, we take a step back from this largely known and studied sequence by introducing some randomness in the choice of the letters written. This enables us to provide some results on the convergence of the density of $1$'s in the resulting sequence. When the choice of the letters is given by an infinite sequence of i.i.d. random variables or by a Markov chain, the average densities of letters converge. Moreover, in the case of i.i.d. random variables, we are able to prove that the densities even almost surely converge.

Critical connectedness of thin arithmetical discrete planes

An arithmetical discrete plane is said to have critical connecting thickness if its thickness is equal to the infimum of the set of values that preserve its $2$-connectedness. This infimum thickness can be computed thanks to the fully subtractive algorithm. This multidimensional continued fraction algorithm consists, in its linear form, in subtracting the smallest entry to the other ones. We provide a characterization of the discrete planes with critical thickness that have zero intercept and that are $2$-connected. Our tools rely on the notion of dual substitution which is a geometric version of the usual notion of substitution acting on words. We associate with the fully subtractive algorithm a set of substitutions whose incidence matrix is provided by the matrices of the algorithm, and prove that their geometric counterparts generate arithmetic discrete planes.

On the Number of Balanced Words of Given Length and Height over a Two-Letter Alphabet

We exhibit a recurrence on the number of discrete line segments joining two integer points in the plane using an encoding of such segments as balanced words of given length and height over the two-letter alphabet $\{0,1\}$. We give generating functions and study the asymptotic behaviour. As a particular case, we focus on the symmetrical discrete segments which are encoded by balanced palindromes.
