Auxiliary Beam Pair Enabled AoD and AoA Estimation in Closed-Loop Large-Scale mmWave MIMO Systems

Channel estimation is of critical importance in millimeter-wave (mmWave) multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems. Due to the use of large antenna arrays, low-complexity mmWave specific channel estimation algorithms are required. In this paper, an auxiliary beam pair design is proposed to provide high-resolution estimates of the channel's angle-of-departure (AoD) and angle-of-arrival (AoA) for mmWave MIMO systems. By performing an amplitude comparison with respect to each auxiliary beam pair, a set of ratio measures that characterize the channel's AoD and AoA are obtained by the receiver. Either the best ratio measure or the estimated AoD is quantized and fed back to the transmitter via a feedback channel. The proposed technique can be incorporated into control channel design to minimize initial access delay. Though the design principles are derived assuming a high-power regime, evaluation under more realistic assumption shows that by employing the proposed method, good angle estimation performance is achieved under various signal-to-noise ratio levels and channel conditions.

A Novel Scattered Pilot Design for FBMC/OQAM Systems

Filter bank multi-carrier with offset quadrature amplitude modulation (FBMC/OQAM) has been heavily studied as an alternative waveform for 5G systems. Its advantages of higher spectrum efficiency, localized frequency response and insensitivity to synchronization errors may enable promising performance when orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) fails. However, performing channel estimation under the intrinsic interference has been a fundamental obstacle towards adopting FBMC/OQMA in a practical system. Several schemes are available but the performance is far from satisfaction. In this paper, we will show the existing methods are trapped by the paradigm that a clean pilot is mandatory so as to explicitly carry a reference symbol to the receiver for the purpose of channel estimation. By breaking this paradigm, a novel dual dependent pilot scheme is proposed, which gives up the independent pilot and derives dual pilots from the imposed interference. By doing this, the interference between pilots can be fully utilized. Consequentially, the new scheme significantly outperforms existing solutions and the simulation results show FBMC/OQAM can achieve close-to-OFDM performance in a practical system even with the presence of strong intrinsic interference.

A Framework of Performance Analysis for Distributed Antenna Systems Based on Random Matrix Theory

Future communications systems will definitely be built on green infrastructures. To realize such a goal, recently a new network infrastructure named cloud radio access network (C-RAN) is proposed by China Mobile to enhance network coverage and save energy simultaneously. In C-RANs, to order to save more energy the radio front ends are separated from the colocated baseband units and distributively located in physical positions. C-RAN can be recognized as a variant of distributed antenna systems (DASs). In this paper we analyze the performance of C-RANS using random matrix theory. Due to the fact that the antennas are distributed geographically instead of being installed nearby, the variances of the entries in the considered channel matrix are different from each other. To the best of the authors' knowledge, the work on random matrices with elements having different variances is largely open, which is of great importance for DASs. In our work, some fundamental results on the eigenvalue distributions of the random matrices with different variances are derived first. Then based on these fundamental conclusions the outage probability of the considered DAS is derived. Finally, the accuracy of our analytical results is assessed by some numerical results.
