Snowmass 2021 White Paper: Higgs Coupling Sensitivities and Model-Independent Bounds on the Scale of New Physics

In this Snowmass white paper, we describe how unitarity bounds can convert sensitivities for Higgs couplings at future colliders into sensitivities to the scale of new physics. This gives a model-independent consequence of improving these sensitivities and illustrate the impact they would have on constraining new physics. Drawing upon past successful applications of unitarity as a guide for future colliders (e.g. the Higgs mass bound and discovering it at the LHC), we hope this data will be useful in the planning for next generation colliders.

Hunting composite vector resonances at the LHC: naturalness facing data

We introduce a simplified low-energy effective Lagrangian description of the phenomenology of heavy vector resonances in the minimal composite Higgs model, based on the coset SO(5)/SO(4), analysing in detail their interaction with lighter top partners. Our construction is based on robust assumptions on the symmetry structure of the theory and on plausible natural assumptions on its dynamics. We apply our simplified approach to triplets in the representations (3, 1) and (1, 3) and to singlets in the representation (1, 1) of SO(4). Our model captures the basic features of their phenomenology in terms of a minimal set of free parameters and can be efficiently used as a benchmark in the search for heavy spin-1 states at the LHC and at future colliders. We devise an efficient semi-analytic method to convert experimental limits on σ {\times} BR into bounds on the free parameters of the theory and we recast the presently available 8 TeV LHC data on experimental searches of spin-1 resonances as exclusion regions in the parameter space of the models. These latter are conveniently interpreted as a test of the notion of naturalness.

Broad composite resonances and their signals at the LHC

We explore the possibility that the left-handed third generation quark doublet $q_L$ is fully composite in composite Higgs models. The signature of the model is the presence of broad spin-1 resonances strongly interacting with the third generation quark doublet $q_L$. In this case, The $t\bar{t}$ resonance search channel is comparable in sensitivity to the di-lepton channel. In addition, the same-sign di-lepton channel in the $t\bar{t}ρ$ associate production can probe the large $g_ρ$ parameter space and complementary to the Drell-Yan production channels.

Electroweak Couplings of the Higgs Boson at a Multi-TeV Muon Collider

We estimate the expected precision at a multi-TeV muon collider for measuring the Higgs boson couplings with electroweak gauge bosons, $HVV$ and $HHVV\ (V=W^\pm,Z)$, as well as the trilinear Higgs self-coupling $HHH$. At very high energies both single and double Higgs productions rely on the vector-boson fusion (VBF) topology. The outgoing remnant particles have a strong tendency to stay in the very forward region, leading to the configuration of the "inclusive process" and making it difficult to isolate $ZZ$ fusion events from the $WW$ fusion. In the single Higgs channel, we perform a maximum likelihood analysis on $HWW$ and $HZZ$ couplings using two categories: the inclusive Higgs production and the 1-muon exclusive signal. In the double Higgs channel, we consider the inclusive production and study the interplay of the trilinear $HHH$ and the quartic $VVHH$ couplings, by utilizing kinematic information in the invariant mass spectrum. We find that at a centre-of-mass energy of 10 TeV (30 TeV) with an integrated luminosity of 10 ab$^{-1}$ (90 ab$^{-1}$), one may reach a 95\% confidence level sensitivity of 0.073\% (0.023\%) for $WWH$ coupling, 0.61\% (0.21\%) for $ZZH$ coupling, 0.62\% (0.20\%) for $WWHH$ coupling, and 5.6\% (2.0\%) for $HHH$ coupling. For dim-6 operators contributing to the processes, these sensitivities could probe the new physics scale $Λ$ in the order of $1-10$ ($2-20$) TeV at a 10 TeV (30 TeV) muon collider.

A hidden confining world on the 750 GeV diphoton excess

We explain the recent diphoton excesses around $750$ GeV by both ATLAS and CMS as a singlet scalar $Φ$ which couples to SM gluon and neutral gauge bosons only through higher dimensional operators. A natural explanation is that $Φ$ is a pseudo-Nambu-Goldstone boson (pNGB) which receives parity violation through anomaly if there exists a hidden strong dynamics. The singlet and other light pNGBs will decay into two SM gauge bosons and even serves as the meta-stable coloured states which can be probed in the future. By accurately measuring their relative decay and the total production rate in the future, we will learn the underlying strong dynamics parameter. The lightest baryon in this confining theory could serve as a viable dark matter candidate.

Interference Effect on Resonance Studies in Searches of Heavy Particles

The interference between resonance signal and continuum background can be either constructive or destructive, depending on the relative sign of couplings between the signal and background amplitudes. Different interference schemes lead to asymmetric distortions of the resonance line shape, which could be distinguished in experiments, when the internal resonance width is larger than the detector resolution. Interpreting the ATLAS diboson excesses by means of a toy $W'$ model as an illustrative example (though it is disfavored by the 13 TeV data), we find that the signs of resonance couplings can only be revealed in the line shape measurements up to a high confidence level at a high luminosity, which could bring us further information on the underlying theory beyond resonance searches at future lepton and hadron colliders.

Patterns of Strong Coupling for LHC Searches

Even though the Standard Model (SM) is weakly coupled at the Fermi scale, a new strong dynamics involving its degrees of freedom may conceivably lurk at slightly higher energies, in the multi TeV range. Approximate symmetries provide a structurally robust context where, within the low energy description, the dimensionless SM couplings are weak, while the new strong dynamics manifests itself exclusively through higher-derivative interactions. We present an exhaustive classification of such scenarios in the form of effective field theories, paying special attention to new classes of models where the strong dynamics involves, along with the Higgs boson, the SM gauge bosons and/or the fermions. The IR softness of the new dynamics suppresses its effects at LEP energies, but deviations are in principle detectable at the LHC, even at energies below the threshold for production of new states. Our construction provides the so far unique structurally robust context where to motivate several searches in Higgs physics, diboson production, or WW scattering, which were so far poorly justified. Perhaps surprisingly, the interplay between weak coupling, strong coupling and derivatives, which is controlled by symmetries, can override the naive expansion in operator dimension, providing instances where dimension-8 dominates dimension-6, well within the domain of validity of the low energy effective theory. This result reveals the limitations of an analysis that is both ambitiously general and restricted to dimension-6 operators.

Low Scale Composite Higgs Model and 1.8 $\sim$ 2 TeV Diboson Excess

We consider a simple solution to explain the recent diboson excess observed by ATALS and CMS Collaborations in models with custodial symmetry $SU(2)_L \times SU(2)_R \rightarrow SU(2)_c$. The $SU(2)_L$ triplet vector boson $ρ$ with mass range of $1.8 \sim 2$ TeV would be produced through the Drell-Yan process with sizable diboson decay branching to account for the excess. The other $SU(2)_L \times SU(2)_R$ bidoublet axial vector boson $a$ would cancel all deviations of electroweak obervables induced by $ρ$ even if the SM fermions mix with some heavy vector like (composite) fermions which couple to $ρ$ ("non-universally partially composite"), therefore allows arbitrary couplings between each SM fermion and $ρ$. We present our model in the "General Composite Higgs" framework with $SO(5) \times U(1)_X \rightarrow SO(4) \times U(1)_X$ breaking at scale $f$ and demand the first Weinberg sum rule and positive gauge boson form factors as the theoretical constraints. We find that our model can fit the diboson excess very well if the left-handed SM light quarks, charged leptons and tops have zero, zero/moderately small and moderate/large composite components for reasonable values of $g_ρ$ and $f$. The correlation between tree level $S$ parameter and the $h \rightarrow Z γ$ suggest a large $a$ contribution to $h \rightarrow Z γ$ and it is indeed a $\mathcal{O}(1)$ effect in our parameter space which provides a strong hint for our scenario if this diboson excess is confirmed by the $13 \sim 14$ TeV LHC Run II.

Probing top-antitop resonances with $t\bar{t}$ scattering at LHC14

We explore the sensitivity of the LHC at 14 TeV centre-of-mass energy (LHC14) to the single production and decay of top-antitop resonances in the four-top final state. We focus on the same-sign dilepton channel, and work within a simplified model with a vector boson coupling to the Standard Model only via its interactions with right-handed top quarks. We find it is possible to discover (exclude) such a vector boson with 300 fb$^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity up to a mass of 1.2 (1.6) TeV for a modest coupling to tops of $g_ρ$=2. We present our results as an exclusion limit on the cross-section$\times$branching ratio for ease of recasting, and interpret them in the context of the gauge-singlet vector boson $ρ_X$ present in many simple Composite Higgs theories.

Vices and Virtues of Higgs EFTs at Large Energy

We study constraints on new physics from Higgs production at the LHC in the context of an effective field theory (EFT), focusing on Higgs searches in $HV$ ($V=W,Z$) associated production which are particularly sensitive to the high-energy behavior of certain dimension-6 operators. We show that analyses of these searches are generally dominated by a kinematic region where the generic EFT expansion breaks down, and establish under which conditions they can nevertheless be meaningful. For example, constraints from these searches on the Wilson coefficients of operators whose effects grow with energy can be established in scenarios where a particular combination of fermions and the Higgs are composite and strongly coupled: then, bounds from Higgs physics at high energy are complementary to LEP1 and competitive with LEP2.

Probing the CP-even Higgs Sector via $H_3\to H_2H_1$ in the Natural NMSSM

After the discovery of a Standard Model (SM) like Higgs boson, naturalness strongly favors the next to the Minimal Supersymmetric SM (NMSSM). In this letter, we point out that the most natural NMSSM predicts the following CP-even Higgs $H_i$ sector: (A) $H_2$ is the SM-like Higgs boson with mass pushed-upward by a lighter $H_1$ with mass overwhelmingly within $[m_{H_2}/2,m_{H_2}]$; (B) $m_{H_3}\simeq 2μ/\sin2β\gtrsim300$ GeV; (C) $H_3$ has a significant coupling to top quarks and can decay to $H_1H_2$ with a large branching ratio. Using jet substructure we show that all the three Higgs bosons can be discovered via $gg\to H_3 \to H_1H_2\to b\bar b \ellνjj$ at the 14 TeV LHC. Especially, the LEP-LHC scenario with $H_1\simeq98$ GeV has a very good discovery potential.

Towards the fate of natural composite Higgs model through single $t^\prime$ search at the 8 TeV LHC

We analyze the observational potential of single $t'$ production in both the $t^\prime \rightarrow bW$ and $t^\prime \rightarrow th$ decay channels at 8 TeV LHC using an integrated luminosity of 25 $\text{fb}^{-1}$. Our analysis is based on a simplified model with minimal coset $SO(5)/SO(4)$ in which the $t'$ is a singlet of the unbroken SO(4). The single $t'$ production, as a consequence of electroweak symmetry breaking, is less kinematically suppressed, associated with a light forward jet and has boosted decay products at the 8 TeV LHC. Therefore it provides the most promising channel in searching for a heavy $t'$. We have exploited the above kinematical features and used the jet substructure method to reconstruct the boosted Higgs in $th$ decay channel. It is shown that a strong constraint on the $t^\prime bW$ coupling ($g_{t^\prime bW}/g_{tbW,SM} < 0.2 \sim 0.3$) at the 95% C. L. can be obtained for $m_{t'} \subset (700, 1000)$ GeV.

Replaying neutrino bremsstrahlung with general dispersion relations

It is generally held that neutrinos with superluminal velocity will lose their energy spontaneously by radiating electron-positron pairs, similar to bremsstrahlung process. Recently, this process was closely studied for neutrinos whose energy is roughly proportional to their momentum. Confronted with an increasing amount of superluminal neutrino models, it is urgent to calculate the same process for general dispersion relations. The calculation is performed in this paper, without resorting to any nontrivial frame such as the effective "rest frame".

The band-gap structures and recovery rules of generalized n-component Fibonacci piezoelectric superlattices

The spectral evolution from periodic structure to random structure has always been an interesting topic in solid state physics, the generalized n-component Fibonacci sequences (n- CF) provide a convenient tool to investigate such process since its randomness can be controlled via the parameter n. In this letter, the band-gap structures of n-CF piezoelectric superlattices have been calculated using the transfer-matrix-method, the self-similarity behavior and recovery rule have been systematically analyzed. Consistent with the rigorous mathematical proof by Hu et al.[A. Hu et al. Phys. Rev. B. 48, 829 (1993)], we find that the n-CF sequences with 2 \leq n \leq 4 are identified as quasiperiodic. The imaginary wave numbers are characterized by the self-similar spectrum, their major peaks can all be properly indexed. In addition, we find that the n = 5 sequence belongs to a critical case which lies at the border between quasiperiodic to aperiodic structures. The frequency range of self-similarity pattern approaches to zero and a unique indexing of imaginary wave numbers becomes impossible. Our study offers the information on the critical 5-CF superlattice which was not available before. The classification of band-gap structures and the scaling laws around fixed points are also given.
