Direct transfer to 46,48^{46,48}K as a survey of the π(s1/2)π(s_{1/2})−ν(sdpf)-ν(sdpf) interaction

The collapse of the canonical N=28N=28 magic number in nuclei with Z<20Z<20 has drawn significant interest as it relates to the emergence of an island of inversion centered on 42^{42}Si and 44^{44}S. In particular, interactions between the πs1/2πs_{1/2} orbital -- empty in 42^{42}Si and full in 44^{44}S -- and the neutron orbitals just above and below the N=28N=28 gap are expected to be critical in this region, but remain relatively unexplored. In this paper, we expand upon the results of our previous study of the direct transfer reaction 47^{47}K(d,pγγ)48^{48}K [C.\,J.~Paxman \textit{et al.}, Phys. Rev. Lett. 134, 162504 (2025)] with the results of the complementary 47^{47}K(d,tγγ)46^{46}K reaction. Through this study, we present a comprehensive scan of the interaction between the critical πs1/2πs_{1/2} orbital and a broad range of neutron orbitals spanning nearly two full shells. We identify several discrepancies between the experimental results and state-of-the-art shell model calculations, which suggest a deficiency of the shell model to fully capture the complex proton configuration mixing in this region, highlighting a significant challenge for single-particle descriptions of the island of inversion.

Structure of 83^{83}As, 85^{85}As and 87^{87}As: from semi-magicity to γγ-softness

The structure of 83^{83}As, 85^{85}As and 87^{87}As have been studied in fusion-fission reaction 238^{238}U+9^9Be. Fission fragments were identified in mass and atomic number using the VAMOS++ spectrometer and the coincident γγ-rays were detected in the γγ-ray tracking array AGATA. New transitions in 83^{83}As and 85^{85}As are reported and placed in the level schemes. A level scheme of the excited states in 87^{87}As is proposed for the first time. The data are interpreted in frame of Large-Scale Shell-Model calculations, SU3 symmetries and Beyond Mean-Field frameworks. A spherical regime at magic number NN=50 is predicted and the location of the proton g9/2g_{9/2} orbital is proposed for the first time. Development of collectivity in a prolate deformed, γγ-soft regime in the open shell cases 85^{85}As and 87^{87}As, most neutron-rich isotopes beyond NN=50, is concluded. Data and theoretical calculations give confidence to a relatively high extrapolated excitation energy about 4 MeV of the 9/2+9/2^+ state in 79^{79}Cu, one proton above 78^{78}Ni.

First direct lifetime measurement of the 2+1 state in 72,74Zn: new evidence for shape transition between N = 40 and N = 42 close to Z = 28

We report here the first direct lifetime measurement of the 2+1 state in 72,74Zn. The neutron-rich beam was produced by in-flight fragmentation of 76Ge at the Grand Accélérateur National d'Ions Lourds and separated with the LISE spectrometer. The 2+1 state was excited by inelastic scattering and knock-out reaction on a CD2 target and its lifetime was measured by the recoil-distance Dopplershift method with the Köln plunger device combined with the EXOGAM detectors. The lifetimes of the 2+1 states in 72,74Zn were determined to be 17.9(18) and 27.0(24) ps, which correspond to reduced transition probabilities B(E2; 2+1 \rightarrow 0+) = 385(39) and 370(33) e2fm4, respectively. These values support the idea of a systematic maximum of collectivity at N = 42 for Zn, Ge and Se nuclei. In addition, the available systematics in the neighboring nuclei point towards a transition from a spherical oscillator at N = 40 to complete γ-softness at N = 42.

High-spin states with seniority v=4,4,6 in 119-126Sn

The 119-126Sn nuclei have been produced as fission fragments in two reactions induced by heavy ions: 12C+238U at 90 MeV bombarding energy, 18O+208Pb at 85 MeV. Their level schemes have been built from gamma rays detected using the Euroball array. High-spin states located above the long-lived isomeric states of the even- and odd-A 120-126Sn nuclei have been identified. Moreover isomeric states lying around 4.5 MeV have been established in 120,122,124,126Sn from the delayed coincidences between the fission fragment detector SAPhIR and the Euroball array. The states located above 3-MeV excitation energy are ascribed to several broken pairs of neutrons occupying the nu h11/2 orbit. The maximum value of angular momentum available in such a high-j shell, i.e. for mid-occupation and the breaking of the three neutron pairs, has been identified. This process is observed for the first time in spherical nuclei.

High-spin structures of five N=82 isotones: 136Xe, 137Cs, 138Ba, 139La, and 140Ce

Five N=82 isotones have been produced in two fusion-fission reactions and their gamma-rays studied with the Euroball array. The high-spin states of 139La have been identified for the first time, while the high-spin yrast and near-to-yrast structures of the four others have been greatly extended. From angular correlation analysis, spin values have been assigned to some states of 136Xe and 137Cs. Several cascades involving gamma-rays of 139La have been found to be delayed, they deexcite an isomeric state with T1/2= 315(35) ns located at 1800-keV excitation energy. The excited states of these five N=82 isotones are expected to be due to various proton excitations involving the three high-j subshells located above the Z=50 shell closure. This is confirmed by the results of shell-model calculations performed in this work. In addition, high-spin states corresponding to the excitation of the neutron core have been unambiguously identified in 136Xe, 137Cs, and 138Ba.

Gamma-ray spectroscopy of 1738^{38}_{17}Cl using grazing reactions

Excited states of 1738^{38}_{17}Cl21_{21} were populated in grazing reactions during the interaction of a beam of 1636^{36}_{16}S20_{20} ions of energy 215 MeV with a 82208^{208}_{82}Pb126_{126} target. The combination of the PRISMA magnetic spectrometer and the CLARA γγ-ray detector array was used to identify the reaction fragments and to detect their decay via γγ-ray emission. A level scheme for 38^{38}Cl is presented with tentative spin and parity assignments. The level scheme is discussed within the context of the systematics of neighboring nuclei and is compared with the results of state-of-the-art shell model calculations.
