Information Retention by Stringy Black Holes

Building upon our previous work on two-dimensional stringy black holes and its extension to spherically-symmetric four-dimensional stringy black holes, we show how the latter retain information. A key rôle is played by an infinite-dimensional $W_\infty$ symmetry that preserves the area of an isolated black-hole horizon and hence its entropy. The exactly-marginal conformal world-sheet operator representing a massless stringy particle interacting with the black hole necessarily includes a contribution from $W_\infty$ generators in its vertex function. This admixture manifests the transfer of information between the string black hole and external particles. We discuss different manifestations of $W_\infty$ symmetry in black-hole physics and the connections between them.

Super-Natural MSSM

We point out that the electroweak fine-tuning problem in the supersymmetric Standard Models (SSMs) is mainly due to the high energy definition of the fine-tuning measure. We propose super-natural supersymmetry which has an order one high energy fine-tuning measure automatically. The key point is that all the mass parameters in the SSMs arise from a single supersymmetry breaking parameter. In this paper, we show that there is no supersymmetry electroweak fine-tuning problem explicitly in the Minimal SSM (MSSM) with no-scale supergravity and Giudice-Masiero (GM) mechanism. We demonstrate that the $Z$-boson mass, the supersymmteric Higgs mixing parameter $μ$ at the unification scale, and the sparticle spectrum can be given as functions of the universal gaugino mass $M_{1/2}$. Because the light stau is the lightest supersymmetric particle (LSP) in the no-scale MSSM, to preserve $R$ parity, we introduce a non-thermally generated axino as the LSP dark matter candidate. We estimate the lifetime of the light stau by calculating its 2-body and 3-body decays to the LSP axino for several values of axion decay constant $f_a$, and find that the light stau has a lifetime $τ_{\tilde τ_1}$ in $[10^{-4},100]$ s for an $f_a$ range $[10^{9},10^{12}]$ GeV. We show that our next to the LSP stau solutions are consistent with all the current experimental constraints, including the sparticle mass bounds, B-physics bounds, Higgs mass, cosmological bounds, and the bounds on long-lived charge particles at the LHC.

A Realistic Intersecting D6-Brane Model after the First LHC Run

With the Higgs boson mass around 125 GeV and the LHC supersymmetry search constraints, we revisit a three-family Pati-Salam model from intersecting D6-branes in Type IIA string theory on the $\mathbf{T^6/(\Z_2 \times \Z_2)}$ orientifold which has a realistic phenomenology. We systematically scan the parameter space for $μ<0$ and $μ>0$, and find that the gravitino mass is generically heavier than about 2 TeV for both cases due to the Higgs mass low bound 123 GeV. In particular, we identify a region of parameter space with the electroweak fine-tuning as small as $Δ_{EW} \sim$ 24-32 (3-4$\%$). In the viable parameter space which is consistent with all the current constraints, the mass ranges for gluino, the first two-generation squarks and sleptons are respectively $[3, ~18]$ TeV, $[3, ~16]$ TeV, and $[2, ~7]$ TeV. For the third-generation sfermions, the light stop satisfying $5σ$ WMAP bounds via neutralino-stop coannihilation has mass from 0.5 to 1.2 TeV, and the light stau can be as light as 800 GeV. We also show various coannihilation and resonance scenarios through which the observed dark matter relic density is achieved. Interestingly, the certain portions of parameter space has excellent $t$-$b$-$τ$ and $b$-$τ$ Yukawa coupling unification. Three regions of parameter space are highlighted as well where the dominant component of the lightest neutralino is a bino, wino or higgsino. We discuss various scenarios in which such solutions may avoid recent astrophysical bounds in case if they satisfy or above observed relic density bounds. Prospects of finding higgsino-like neutralino in direct and indirect searches are also studied. And we display six tables of benchmark points depicting various interesting features of our model.

Proton Stability and Dark Matter in a Realistic String MSSM

We demonstrate the existence of an extra nonanomalous U(1) gauge symmetry in a three-generation Pati-Salam model constructed with intersecting D6-branes in Type IIA string theory on a T^6/(Z_2 \times Z_2) orientifold. This extra U(1) forbids all dimension-4, 5, and 6 operators which mediate proton decay in the MSSM. Moreover, this results in the effective promotion of baryon and lepton number to local gauge symmetries, which can potentially result in leptophobic and leptophilic $Z'$ bosons observable at the LHC. Furthermore, it is not necessary to invoke R-parity to forbid the dimension-4 operators which allow rapid proton decay. However, R-parity may arise naturally from a spontaneously broken U(1)_{B-L}. Assuming the presence of R-parity, we then study the direct detection cross-sections for neutralino dark matter, including the latest constraints from the XENON100 experiment. We find that these limits are now within required range necessary to begin testing the model.

A Note on Modulus-dominated SUSY-breaking

In models where supersymmetry-breaking is dominated by the Kahler moduli and/or the universal dilaton, the B-parameter at the unification scale should be consistent with the value of tan(beta) at the electroweak scale determined by minimization of the Higgs potential triggering REWSB. We study such models employing a self-consistent determination of the B-parameter. In particular, we study the viability of a generic model, as well as M-theory and Type IIB flux compactifications with modulus-dominated supersymmetric soft-terms from the GUT scale, M_{GUT}=2x10^{16}GeV.

Stringy Neutralino Dark Matter in Light of CDMSII

Recently, the CDMS experiment has reported the possible first direct-detection of dark matter. We update the direct-detection constraints for neutralino dark matter arising in a realistic string model constructed from intersecting D6-branes taking into account the recent data from the CDMS collaboration. We find that there are well-defined regions of the supersymmetry parameter space where neutralino dark matter satisfying the CDMS and all other experimental limits may be obtained. This results in a set of distinct superpartner and Higgs spectra which may be tested at LHC.

The MAGIC of SSC and how it affects LHC

We discuss the phenomenology of Supercritical String Cosmology (SSC) in the context of Dark Matter constraints on supersymmetric particle physics models at LHC. We also link our results with recent findings of the MAGIC, H.E.S.S. and Fermi Telescopes on delayed arrival of highly energetic photons from the distant Galaxies and GRBs. The link is provided by a concrete model of space-time foam in (supercritical) string theory, involving space-time defects and their interaction with matter in a brane world scenario.

The Search for a Realistic String Model at LHC

We survey the low-energy supersymmetry phenomenology of a three-family Pati-Salam model constructed from intersecting D6-branes in Type IIA string theory on the T^6/(Z_2 x Z_2) orientifold which possesses many of the phenomenological properties desired in string model-building. In the model, there is no exotic matter in the low-energy spectrum, the correct mass hierarchies for quarks and leptons may be obtained, and the gauge couplings are automatically unified at the string scale. We calculate the supersymmetry breaking soft terms and the corresponding low-energy supersymmetry particle spectra for the model. We find the WMAP constrained dark matter density can be generated in this model in the stau-neutralino and chargino-neutralino coannihilation regions, with expected final states at LHC consisting of low energy leptons and O(GeV) neutrinos. Moreover, we expect final states in the supercritical string cosmology (SSC) scenario to comprise high energy leptons and O(GeV) neutrinos.

The String Coupling Accelerates the Expansion of the Universe

Generic cosmological models in non-critical string theory have a time-dependent dilaton background at a late epoch. The cosmological deceleration parameter Q_0 is given by the square of the string coupling, g_s^2, up to a negative sign. Hence the expansion of the Universe must accelerate eventually, and the observed value of Q_0 coresponds to g_s^2 ~ 0.6. In this scenario, the string coupling is asymptotically free at large times, but its present rate of change is imperceptibly small.

Partial wave treatment of Supersymmetric Dark Matter in the presence of CP - violation

We present an improved partial wave analysis of the dominant LSP annihilation channel to a fermion-antifermion pair which avoids the non-relativistic expansion being therefore applicable near thresholds and poles. The method we develop allows of contributions of any partial wave in the total angular momentum J in contrast to partial wave analyses in terms of the orbital angular momentum L of the initial state, which is usually truncated to p-waves, and yields very accurate results. The method is formulated in such a way as to allow easy handling of CP-violating phases residing in supersymmetric parameters. We apply this refined partial wave technique in order to calculate the neutralino relic density in the constrained MSSM (CMSSM) in the presence of CP-violating terms occurring in the Higgs - mixing parameter μand trilinear A coupling for large tanb. The inclusion of CP-violating phases in mu and A does not upset significantly the picture and the annihilation of the LSP's to a b b_bar, through Higgs exchange, is still the dominant mechanism in obtaining cosmologically acceptable neutralino relic densities in regions far from the stau-coannihilation and the `focus point'. Significant changes can occur if we allow for phases in the gaugino masses and in particular the gluino mass.

Surface plasmon resonance study of the actin-myosin sarcomeric complex and tubulin dimers

Biosensors based on the principle of surface plasmon resonance (SPR) detection were used to measure biomolecular interactions in sarcomeres and changes of the dielectric constant of tubulin samples with varying concentration. At SPR, photons of laser light efficiently excite surface plasmons propagating along a metal (gold) film. This resonance manifests itself as a sharp minimum in the reflection of the incident laser light and occurs at a characteristic angle. The dependence of the SPR angle on the dielectric permittivity of the sample medium adjacent to the gold film allows the monitoring of molecular interactions at the surface. We present results of measurements of cross-bridge attachment/detachment within intact mouse heart muscle sarcomeres and measurements on bovine tubulin molecules pertinent to cytoskeletal signal transduction models.

WMAPing the Universe: Supersymmetry, Dark Matter, Dark Energy, Proton Decay and Collider Physics

In this review we discuss constraints on minimal supersymmetric models of particle physics implied by the recent astrophysical observations of WMAP. Although the prospects of detecting supersymmetry increase and 90 percent of the available MSSM parameter space can safely be reached by the sensitivity of future colliders, nevertheless we pay particular emphasis on discussing regions of the appropriate phase diagrams, which -if realized - would imply that detection of supersymmetry, at least in the context of minimal models, could be out of colliders reach. We also discuss the importance of a precise determination of the radiative corrections to the muon anomalous magnetic moment, both theoretically and experimentally. Finally, we briefly commend upon recent evidence, supported by observations, on a dark energy component of the Universe, of as yet unknown origin, covering 73 percent of its energy content.

Inflationary Baryogenesis

In this letter we explore the possibility of creating the baryon asymmetry of the universe during inflation and reheating due to the decay of a field associated with the inflaton. CP violation is attained by assuming that this field is complex with a phase that varies as the inflaton evolves. We consider chaotic and natural inflation scenarios. In the former case, the complex decaying field is the inflaton itself and, in the latter case, the phase of the complex field is the inflaton. We calculate the asymmetry produced using the Bogolyubov formalism that relates annihilation and creation operators at late time to the annihilation and creation operators at early time.

Phenomenology of Non-Abelian Flat Directions in a Minimal Superstring Standard Model

Recently, we presented the first non-Abelian flat directions that produce from a heterotic string model solely the three-generation MSSM states as the massless spectrum in the observable sector of the low energy effective field theory. In this paper we continue to develop the systematic techniques for the analysis of nonrenormalizable superpotential terms and non-Abelian flat direction in realistic string models. Some of our non-Abelian directions were F-flat to all finite orders in the superpotential. We study for the same string model the varying phenomenologies resulting from a large set of such all-order flat directions. We focus on the quark, charged lepton, and Higgs doublet mass matrices resulting for our phenomenologically superior non-Abelian flat direction. We review and apply a string-related method for generating large mass hierarchies between MSSM generations, first discussed in string-derived flipped SU(5) models, when all generational mass terms are of renormalizable or very low non-renormalizable order.

A Minimal Superstring Standard Model I: Flat Directions

Three family SU(3)_C x SU(2)_L x U(1)_Y string models in several constructions generically possess two features: (i) an extra local anomalous U(1)_A and (ii) numerous (often fractionally charged) exotic particles beyond those in the minimal supersymmetric model (MSSM). Recently, we demonstrated that the observable sector effective field theory of such a free fermionic string model can reduce to that of the MSSM, with the standard observable gauge group being just SU(3)_C x SU(2)_L x U(1)_Y and the SU(3)_C x SU(2)_L x U(1)_Y-charged spectrum of the observable sector consisting solely of the MSSM spectrum. An example of a model with this property was shown. We continue our investigation of this model by presenting a large set of different flat directions of the same model that all produce the MSSM spectrum. Our results suggest that even after imposing the conditions for the decoupling of exotic states, there may remain sufficient freedom to satisfy the remaining phenomenological constraints imposed by the observed data.

Non-Abelian Flat Directions in a Minimal Superstring Standard Model

Recently, by studying exact flat directions of non-Abelian singlet fields, we demonstrated the existence of free fermionic heterotic-string models in which the SU(3)_C x SU(2)_L x U(1)_Y-charged matter spectrum, just below the string scale, consists solely of the MSSM spectrum. In this paper we generalize the analysis to include VEVs of non-Abelian fields. We find several, MSSM-producing, exact non-Abelian flat directions, which are the first such examples in the literature. We examine the possibility that hidden sector condensates lift the flat directions.

A Microscopic Recoil Model for Light-Cone Fluctuations in Quantum Gravity

We present a microscopic model for light-cone fluctuations ``in vacuo'', which incorporates a treatment of quantum-gravitational recoil effects induced by energetic particles. Treating defects in space-time as solitons in string theory, we derive an energy-dependent refractive index and a stochastic spread in the arrival times of mono-energetic photons due to quantum diffusion through space-time foam, as found previously using an effective Born-Infeld action. Distant astrophysical sources provide sensitive tests of these possible quantum-gravitational phenomena.

String derived MSSM and M-theory Unification

The recent conjecture of possible equivalence between the string scale $M_S$ and the minimal supersymmetric standard model unification scale M_U ~ 2.5 x 10^{16} GeV is considered in the context of string models. This conjecture suggests that the observable gauge group just below the string scale should be SU(3)_C x SU(2)_L x U(1)_Y and that the SU(3)_C x SU(2)_L x U(1)_Y-charged spectrum of the observable sector should consist solely of the MSSM spectrum. We demonstrate that string models can actually be constructed that possess these observable features. Two aspects generic to many classes of three family SU(3)_C x SU(2)_L x U(1)_Y string models are both an extra local anomalous U(1)_A and numerous (often fractionally charged) exotic particles beyond the MSSM. Thus, for these classes, the key to obtaining an M_S = M_U ~ 2.5 x 10^{16} GeV string model is the existence of F- and D-flat directions that near the string scale can simultaneously break the anomalous U(1) and give mass to all exotic SM-charged observable particles, decoupling them from the low energy spectrum. In this letter we show, in the context of free fermionic strings, that string models with flat directions possessing these features do exist. We present one such string derived model in which all such exotic observable states beyond the MSSM receive mass at the scale generated by the Fayet- Iliopoulos term. The associated F- and D-flat direction is proven flat to all orders of the superpotential.

M Theory from World-Sheet Defects in Liouville String

We have argued previously that black holes may be represented in a D-brane approach by monopole and vortex defects in a sine-Gordon field theory model of Liouville dynamics on the world sheet. Supersymmetrizing this sine-Gordon system, we find critical behaviour in 11 dimensions, due to defect condensation that is the world-sheet analogue of D-brane condensation around an extra space-time dimension in M theory. This supersymmetric description of Liouville dynamics has a natural embedding within a 12-dimensional framework suggestive of F theory.

Number of Generations in Free Fermionic String Models,

In string theory there seems to be an intimate connection between spacetime and world-sheet physics. Following this line of thought we investigate the family problem in a particular class of string solutions, namely the free fermionic string models. We find that the number of generations $N_g$ is related to the index of the supersymmetry generator of the underlying $N=2$ internal superconformal field theory which is always present in any $N=1$ spacetime supersymmetric string vacuum. We also derive a formula for the index and thus for the number of generations which is sensitive to the boundary condition assignments of the internal fermions and to certain coefficients which determine the weight with which each spin-structure of the model contributes to the one-loop partition function. Finally we apply our formula to several realistic string models in order to derive $N_g$ and we verify our results by constructing explicitly the massless spectrum of these string models.

As time goes by

A rather simple and non-technical exposition of our new approach to {\em Time, Quantum Physics, Black-Hole dynamics}, and {\em Cosmology}, based on non-critical string theory, is provided. A new fundamental principle, the {\em Procrustean Principle}, that catches the essence of our approach is postulated: the low-energy world is {\em unavoidably} an ``open" system due to the spontaneous truncation of the {\em delocalized, topological} string modes in continuous interaction with the low-lying-{\em localized} string modes. The origin of space-time, the expansion of the Universe, the entropy increase and accompanied irreversibility of time, as well as the collapse of the wavefunction are all very neatly tied together. Possible observable consequences include: quantum relaxation with time of the Universal, fundamental constants, like the velocity of light $c$ and the Planck constant $\hbar$ decreasing towards their asymptotic values, and the cosmological constant $Λ_C$ diminishing towards zero; possible violation of {\em CPT} invariance in the $K^0-\bar K^0$ system, possible apparent non-conservation of angular momentum, and possible loss of quantum coherence in SQUID-type experiments.

The Electroweak Phase Transition in Minimal Supergravity Models

We have explored the electroweak phase transition in minimal supergravity models by extending previous analysis of the one-loop Higgs potential to include finite temperature effects. Minimal supergravity is characterized by two higgs doublets at the electroweak scale, gauge coupling unification, and universal soft-SUSY breaking at the unification scale. We have searched for the allowed parameter space that avoids washout of baryon number via unsuppressed anomalous Electroweak sphaleron processes after the phase transition. This requirement imposes strong constraints on the Higgs sector. With respect to weak scale baryogenesis, we find that the generic MSSM is {\it not} phenomenologically acceptable, and show that the additional experimental and consistency constraints of minimal supergravity restricts the mass of the lightest CP-even Higgs even further to $m_h\lsim 32\GeV$ (at one loop), also in conflict with experiment. Thus, if supergravity is to allow for baryogenesis via any other mechanism above the weak scale, it {\it must} also provide for B-L production (or some other `accidentally' conserved quantity) above the electroweak scale. Finally, we suggest that the no-scale flipped $SU(5)$ supergravity model can naturally and economically provide a source of B-L violation and realistically account for the observed ratio $n_B/n_γ\sim 10^{-10}$.

The String Universe: High $T_c$ Superconductor or Quantum Hall Conductor?

Our answer is the latter. Space-time singularities, including the initial one, are described by world-sheet topological Abelian gauge theories with a Chern-Simons term. Their effective $N=2$ supersymmetry provides an initial fixed point where the Bogomolny bound is saturated on the world-sheet, corresponding to an extreme Reissner-Nordstrom solution in space-time. Away from the singularity the gauge theory has world-sheet matter fields, bosons and fermions, associated with the generation of target space-time. Because the fermions are complex (cf the Quantum Hall Effect) rather than real (cf high-$T_c$ superconductors) the energetically-preferred vacuum is not parity or time-reversal invariant, and the associated renormalization group flow explains the cosmological arrow of time, as well as the decay of real or virtual black holes, with a monotonic increase in entropy.
