Amplitudes for space-like separations and causality

This paper explores whether quantum field theory allows the events of emission and absorption of a single particle to be separated by a space-like interval without violating Lorentz symmetries and causality. Although the answer is indeed affirmative, traditionally such effects have been considered negligible. We show that for sufficiently light mass eigenstates such processes can become significant over macroscopic length scales. A critical review of the historical literature reveals various shortcomings of the standard methods; specifically, one finds that they are restricted to states for which the expectation value of momentum vanishes. Furthermore, the results obtained here correct Feynman's analysis of this subject. A formalism is thus developed that allows the description of states with non-zero momentum, which is then applied to the OPERA and ICARUS neutrino-speed experiments. For OPERA we choose a mass in the nano electron-volt range and find that although our formalism predicts a non-zero detection probability for an early arrival time of 60 ns, the predicted event distribution is maximal on the light-cone. Consequently, our prediction does not reproduce the peak at 60 ns reported by the OPERA collaboration. Turning to the ICARUS experiment, we note that while the collaboration reported an average time of flight that is consistent with the speed of light, the event data with its associated uncertainties nevertheless indicates that some of the detection events are separated from their corresponding emission events by a space-like interval. For a micro electron-volt mass range, this is in agreement with the here reported formalism. We thus raise the possibility of employing high-precision neutrino-speed experiments to determine the absolute masses of neutrino mass eigenstates.

CP violating Tri-bimaximal-Cabibbo mixing

In view of the new data from the Daya Bay and RENO collaborations, King has presented a very natural deformation of tri-bimaximal mixing. Here we show that L/E flatness of the e-like event ratio in the atmospheric neutrino data, when coupled with King's observation that the smallest neutrino mixing angle, θ_{13}, seems to be related to the largest quark mixing angle (the Cabibbo angle θ_C), leads to a CP violating tri-bimaximal-Cabibbo mixing. King's tri-bimaximal-Cabibbo mixing follows as a leading order approximation from our result.

Gamma-ray bursts and the relevance of rotation-induced neutrino sterilization

A la Pontecorvo when one defines electroweak flavour states of neutrinos as a linear superposition of mass eigenstates one ignores the associated spin. If, however, there is a significant rotation between the neutrino source, and the detector, a negative helicity state emitted by the former acquires a non-zero probability amplitude to be perceived as a positive helicity state by the latter. Both of these states are still in the left-Weyl sector of the Lorentz group. The electroweak interaction cross sections for such helicity-flipped states are suppressed by a factor of $(m_ν/E_ν)^2$, where $m_ν$ is the expectation value of the neutrino mass, and $E_ν$ is the associated energy. Thus, if the detecting process is based on electroweak interactions, and the neutrino source is a highly rotating object, the rotation-induced helicity flip becomes very significant in interpreting the data. The effect immediately generalizes to anti-neutrinos. Motivated by these observations we present a generalization of the Pontecorvo formalism and discuss its relevance in the context of recent data obtained by the IceCube neutrino telescope.

Neutrino oscillations with disentanglement of a neutrino from its partners

We bring attention to the fact that in order to understand existing data on neutrino oscillations, and to design future experiments, it is imperative to appreciate the role of quantum entanglement. Once this is accounted for, the resulting energy-momentum conserving phenomenology requires a single new parameter related to disentanglement of a neutrino from its partners. This parameter may not be CP symmetric. We illustrate the new ideas, with potentially measurable effects, in the context of a novel experiment recently proposed by Gavrin, Gorbachev, Veretenkin, and Cleveland. The strongest impact of our ideas is on the resolution of various anomalies in neutrino oscillations and on neutrino propagation in astrophysical environments.

Elko as self-interacting fermionic dark matter with axis of locality

We here provide further details on the construction and properties of mass dimension one quantum fields based on Elko expansion coefficients. We show that by a judicious choice of phases, the locality structure can be dramatically improved. In the process we construct a fermionic dark matter candidate which carries not only an unsuppressed quartic self interaction but also a preferred axis. Both of these aspects are tentatively supported by the data on dark matter.

Very special relativity as relativity of dark matter: the Elko connection

In the very special relativity (VSR) proposal by Cohen and Glashow, it was pointed out that invariance under HOM(2) is both necessary and sufficient to explain the null result of the Michelson-Morely experiment. It is the quantum field theoretic demand of locality, or the requirement of P, T, CP, or CT invariance, that makes invariance under the Lorentz group a necessity. Originally it was conjectured that VSR operates at the Planck scale; we propose that the natural arena for VSR is at energies similar to the standard model, but in the dark sector. To this end we provide an ab initio spinor representation invariant under the SIM(2) avatar of VSR and construct a mass dimension one fermionic quantum field of spin one half. This field turns out to be a very close sibling of Elko and it exhibits the same striking property of intrinsic darkness with respect to the standard model fields. In the new construct, the tension between Elko and Lorentz symmetries is fully resolved. We thus entertain the possibility that the symmetries underlying the standard model matter and gauge fields are those of Lorentz, while the event space underlying the dark matter and the dark gauge fields supports the algebraic structure underlying VSR.

Self-interacting Elko dark matter with an axis of locality

This communication is a natural and nontrivial continuation of the 2005 work of Ahluwalia and Grumiller on Elko. Here we report that Elko breaks Lorentz symmetry in a rather subtle and unexpected way by containing a `hidden' preferred direction. Along this preferred direction, a quantum field based on Elko enjoys locality. In the form reported here, Elko offers a mass dimension one fermionic dark matter with a quartic self-interaction and a preferred axis of locality. The locality result crucially depends on a judicious choice of phases.

Towards a relativity of dark-matter rods and clocks

In the absence of dark matter, the dynamical and kinematical interpretations of the special relativistic spacetime have been and still are the topic of philosophic debate, which whilst fertile, is by and large of little predictive power. This changes dramatically if the debate includes a dark matter candidate in a "non-trivial" extension of the standard model. Here I argue that rods and clocks made out of dark matter may not reveal the same underlying algebraic structure as the rods and clocks made out of standard model particles. For the sake of concreteness I here exemplify the argument by looking at a particular dark matter candidate called Elko. Inevitably, one is led to the conclusion that gravity within the dark sector, and at the interface between dark matter and standard-model matter, may deviate from the canonical general relativistic predictions. For Elko dark matter such effects will be of second order in the sense that they will depend only on the angular momentum and spin of the gravitational environment.

Ambiguity in source flux of high-energy cosmic/astrophysical neutrinos: Effects of bi-maximal mixing and quantum-gravity induced decoherence

For high energy cosmic neutrinos Athar, Jezabek, and Yasuda (AJY) have recently shown that the existing data on neutrino oscillations suggests that cosmic neutrino flux at the AGN/GRB source, F(nu_e):F(nu_mu):F(nu_tau) approx 1:2:0, oscillates to F(nu_e):F(nu_mu):F(nu_tau) approx 1:1:1. These results can be confirmed at AMANDA, Baikal, ANTARES and NESTOR, and other neutrino detectors with a good flavor resolution. Here, we re-derive the AJY result from quasi bi-maximal mixing, and show that observation of F(nu_e):F(nu_mu):F(nu_tau) approx 1:1:1 does not necessarily establish cosmic neutrino flux at the AGN/GRB source to be F(nu_e):F(nu_mu):F(nu_tau) approx 1:2:0. We also note that if the length scale for the quantum-gravity induced de-coherence for astrophysical neutrinos is of the order of a Mpc, then independent of the MNS matrix, the Liu-Hu-Ge (LHG) mechanism would lead to flux equalization for the cosmic/astrophysical neutrinos.

A CP-Violating Kinematic Structure

A CP violating kinematic structure is presented. The essential physical input is to question the textbook wisdom, ``Now when a particle is at rest, one cannot define its spin as either left- or right-handed, so phi_R(0) = phi_L(0),'' as found, e.g., in Lewis Ryder's Quantum Field Theory, and in many other books on the representations of the Lorentz group. It is suggested that this equality is true only up to a phase. The demand of C, P, and T covariances, separately, fixes this phase to be pm 1. If these conditions are relaxed, a natural CP-violating kinematic structure emerges. Having established a CP-violating kinematic structure, we then discuss how Planck scale physics necessarily invokes non-commutative space-time and that such changes in the structure of space-time will force upon us additional violations/deformations of the CPT structure of space-time, and a violation of the principle of equivalence via a violation of the Lorentz symmetries. The latter may carry significant consequences for understanding the data on ultra high energy cosmic rays.

Quantum Gravity - Testing Time for Theories

The extreme smallness of both the Planck length, on the one side, and the ratio of the gravitational to the electrical forces between, say, two electrons, on the other side has led to a widespread belief that the realm of quantum gravity is beyond terrestrial experiments. A series of classical and quantum arguments are put forward to dispel this view. It is concluded that whereas the smallness of the Planck length and the ratio of gravitational to electrical forces, does play its own essential role in nature, it does not make quantum gravity a science where humans cannot venture to probe her secrets. In particular attention is drawn to the latest neutron and atomic interferometry experiments, and to gravity wave interferometers. The latter, as Giovanni Amelino-Camelia argues [Nature 398, 216 (1999)], can be treated as probes of space-time fuzziness down to Planck length for certain quantum-gravity models.

Reconciling Super-Kamiokande, LSND, and Homestake neutrino-oscillation data

The L/E-flatness of the e-like events observed in the recent atmospheric-neutrino data from Super-Kamiokande (SuperK) is interpreted to reflect a new symmetry of the neutrino-oscillation mixing matrix. From that we obtain an analytical set of constraints yielding a class of mixing matrices of the property to simultaneously fit both the SuperK and the LSND data. The resulting mass squared difference relevant for the LSND experiment is found as 0.3 eV^2. The discussed symmetry, e.g., carries the nature that expectation values of masses for ν_μand ν_τare identical. These considerations are purely data dictated. A different framework is then applied to the solar neutrino problem. It is argued that a single sterile neutrino is an unlikely candidate to accommodate the data from the four solar neutrino experiments. A scenario is discussed which violates CPT symmetry, and favors the ν_e - \barν_e system to belong to the `self'-`anti-self' charge conjugate construct in the (1/2,0)+(0,1/2) representation space, where the needed helicity flipping amplitudes are preferred, rather than the usual Dirac, or Majorana, constructs. In the presented framework the emerging SuperK data on solar neutrino flux is reconciled with the Homestake, GALLEX, and SAGE experiments. This happens because the former detects not only the solar ν_e but also, at a lower cross section, the oscillated solar \barν_e; while the latter are sensitive only to the oscillation-diminished solar ν_e flux. A direct observation of solar \barν_e by SNO will confirm our scenario. Finally, we consider the possibility for flavor-dependent gravitational couplings of neutrinos as emerging out of the noncommutativity of the quantum operators associated with the measurements of energy and flavor.

(J,0)+(0,j) Representation Space: Majorana-Like Construct

This is second of the two invited lectures presented (by D. V. Ahluwalia) at the ``XVII International School of Theoretical Physics: Standard Model and Beyond' 93.'' The text is essentially based on a recent publication by the present authors [Mod. Phys. Lett. A (in press)]. Here, after briefly reviewing the $(j,0)\oplus(0,j)$ Dirac-like construct in the front form, we present a detailed construction of the $(j,0)\oplus(0,j)$ Majorana-like fields.
