Scaling in $γ^* p$ total cross sections and the generalized vector dominance/color dipole picture

The scaling in $σ_{γ^*p}$ cross sections (for $Q^2/W^2 << 1$) in terms of the scaling variable $η= (Q^2 + m^2_0)/Λ^2 (W^2)$ is interpreted in the generalized vector dominance/color-dipole picture (GVD/CDP). The quantity $Λ^2 (W^2)$ is identified as the average gluon transverse momentum absorbed by the $q \bar q$ state, $<\vec l^{~2}> = (1/6) Λ^2 (W^2)$. At any $Q^2$, for $W^2 \to \infty$,the cross sections for virtual and real photons became universal, $σ_{γ^*p}(W^2,Q^2)/σ_{γp}(W^2) \to 1$.

Deep inelastic Scattering, QCD, and generalised vector dominance

We provide a formulation of generalised vector dominance (GVD) for low-x deep-inelastic scattering that explicitly incorporates the $γ^{\ast} \to q{\bar q}$ transition and a QCD-inspired ansatz for the $(q{\bar q})p$ forward-scattering amplitude. The destructive interference originally introduced in off-diagonal GVD is recovered in the present formulation and traced back to the generic structure of two-gluon-exchange as incorporated into the notion of colour transparency. Asymptotically, the transverse photoabsorption cross section behaves as (ln Q^2)/Q^2, implying a logarithmic violation of scaling for F_2, while the longitudinal-to-transverse ratio decreases as 1/ln Q^2.

Off-diagonal generalized vector dominance in DIS and QCD

We review the generalized vector dominance (GVD) approach to DIS at small values of the scaling variable, x. In particular, we concentrate on a recent formulation of GVD that explicitly incorporates the configuration of the gamma^* -> q qbar transition and a QCD-inspired ansatz for the (qqbar)p scattering amplitude. The destructive interference, originally introduced in off-diagonal GVD is traced back to the generic strcuture of two-gluon exchange. Asymptotically, the transverse photoabsorption cross section behaves as (ln Q^2)/Q^2, implying a logarithmic violation of scaling for F_2, while the longitudinal-to-transverse ratio decreases as 1/\ln Q^2. We also briefly comment on vector-meson production.

A Simple Approximation of the One-Loop Corrected Cross Section for $e^+e^-\to W^+W^-$ at LEP 2

Using the SU(2) gauge coupling, $g_{W^\pm} (M^2_{W^\pm})$, at the high-energy scale of $M_{W^\pm}$, defined by the (theoretical value of the) leptonic W-width, rather than using the low-energy value, defined via the Fermi coupling, $G_μ$, in the Born approximation, and supplementing with Coulomb corrections and initial state radiation, errors with respect to the exact one-loop results for the differential cross section of $e^+e^-\to W^+W^-$ are below 1% at LEP 2 energies at all $W^+W^-$ production angles. A similar procedure is suggested to incorporate leading bosonic loop effects into four-fermion production in the fermion-loop scheme. The resulting accuracy below 1% is sufficient for LEP 2 experiments.

A Remark on the $Z^0 \to b\bar b$ Width

The $Z^0 \to b\bar b$ width, $Γ_b$, is analysed in conjunction with the total and hadronic $Z^0$ widths, $Γ_T$ and $Γ_h$. Assuming, tentatively, that the present 2$σ$ discrepancy in $Γ_b$ will substantiate as time goes on, for large values of $m_H$ it will be sufficient to modify the $Z^0 b \bar b$ vertex only. In contrast, for small values of $m_H$, the theoretical predictions for both the $Z^0$ width into light quarks and leptons as well as the $Z^0 \to b\bar b$ vertex will have to be modified.

Refined Analysis of the Electroweak Precision Data

We refine our recent analysis of the electroweak precision data at the \PZO\ pole by including the hadronic decay modes of the \PZO. Within the framework of an effective Lagrangian we parametrize $SU(2)$ violation by the additional process-specific parameters $\De y_ν$, $\De\yh$, and $\De\yb$ (for the $\PZOν\barν$, $\PZO\Pq\bar\Pq$, and $\PZO\Pb\bar\Pb$ vertices) together with the previously introduced parameters $\De x$, $\De y$, and $\eps$. We find that a six-parameter analysis of the experimental data is indeed feasible, and it is carried out in addition to a four-parameter fit for $\De x$, $\De y$, $\eps$, and $\De\yb$ only. We reemphasize that the experimental data have become sensitive to the (combined) magnitude of the vertex corrections at the $\PWp\Pl\barν$ ($\PWmν\bar\Pl$) and $\PZO\Pl\bar\Pl$ vertices, $\De y$, which is insensitive to the notion of the Higgs mechanism but dependent on the non-Abelian, trilinear vector-boson coupling. Full explicit analytical results for the standard one-loop predictions for the above-mentioned parameters are given, and the leading two-loop top-quark effects are included. The analytic formluae for the analysis of the experimental data in terms of the parameters $\De x$, $\De y$ etc.\ are presented in order to encourage experimentalists to persue such an analysis by themselves with future data.
