Measurement of ϕϕ-meson production in Cu++Au at sNN=200\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200 GeV and U++U at sNN=193\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=193 GeV

The PHENIX experiment reports systematic measurements at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider of ϕϕ-meson production in asymmetric Cu++Au collisions at sNN\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200 GeV and in U++U collisions at sNN\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=193 GeV. Measurements were performed via the ϕ→K+K−ϕ\rightarrow K^{+}K^{-} decay channel at midrapidity ∣η∣<0.35|η|<0.35. Features of ϕϕ-meson production measured in Cu++Cu, Cu++Au, Au++Au, and U++U collisions were found to not depend on the collision geometry, which was expected because the yields are averaged over the azimuthal angle and follow the expected scaling with nuclear-overlap size. The elliptic flow of the ϕϕ meson in Cu++Au, Au++Au, and U++U collisions scales with second-order-participant eccentricity and the length scale of the nuclear-overlap region (estimated with the number of participating nucleons). At moderate pTp_T, ϕϕ-meson production measured in Cu++Au and U++U collisions is consistent with coalescence-model predictions, whereas at high pTp_T the production is in agreement with expectations for in-medium energy loss of parent partons prior to their fragmentation. The elliptic flow for ϕϕ mesons measured in Cu++Au and U++U collisions is well described by a (2+1)D viscous-hydrodynamic model with specific-shear viscosity η/s=1/4πη/s=1/4π.

Kinematic dependence of azimuthal anisotropies in pp++Au, dd++Au, 3^3He+Au at sNN\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}} = 200 GeV

There is strong evidence for the formation of small droplets of quark-gluon plasma in p/d/3p/d/^{3}He+Au collisions at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) and in pp+pp/Pb collisions at the Large Hadron Collider. In particular, the analysis of data at RHIC for different geometries obtained by varying the projectile size and shape has proven insightful. In the present analysis, we find excellent agreement with the previously published PHENIX at RHIC results on elliptical and triangular flow with an independent analysis via the two-particle correlation method, which has quite different systematic uncertainties and an independent code base. In addition, the results are extended to other detector combinations with different kinematic (pseudorapidity) coverage. These results provide additional constraints on contributions from nonflow and longitudinal decorrelations.

Measurement of ψ(2S)ψ(2S) nuclear modification at backward and forward rapidity in pp++pp, pp++Al, and pp++Au collisions at sNN=200\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200 GeV

Suppression of the J/ψJ/ψ nuclear-modification factor has been seen as a trademark signature of final-state effects in large collision systems for decades. In small systems, the nuclear modification was attributed to cold-nuclear-matter effects until the observation of strong differential suppression of the ψ(2S)ψ(2S) state in p/dp/d++AA collisions suggested the presence of final-state effects. Results of J/ψJ/ψ and ψ(2S)ψ(2S) measurements in the dimuon decay channel are presented here for pp++pp, pp++Al, and pp++Au collision systems at sNN=200\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200 GeV. The results are predominantly shown in the form of the nuclear-modification factor, RpAR_{pA}, the ratio of the ψ(2S)ψ(2S) invariant yield per nucleon-nucleon collision in collisions of proton on target nucleus to that in pp++pp collisions. Measurements of the J/ψJ/ψ and ψ(2S)ψ(2S) nuclear-modification factor are compared with shadowing and transport-model predictions, as well as to complementary measurements at Large-Hadron-Collider energies.

Study of ϕϕ-meson production in pp++Al, pp++Au, dd++Au, and 3^3He++Au collisions at sNN=200\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200 GeV

Small nuclear collisions are mainly sensitive to cold-nuclear-matter effects; however, the collective behavior observed in these collisions shows a hint of hot-nuclear-matter effects. The identified-particle spectra, especially the ϕϕ mesons which contain strange and antistrange quarks and have a relatively small hadronic-interaction cross section, are a good tool to study these effects. The PHENIX experiment has measured ϕϕ mesons in a specific set of small collision systems pp++Al, pp++Au, and 3^3He++Au, as well as dd++Au [Phys. Rev. C {\bf 83}, 024909 (2011)], at sNN=200\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200 GeV. The transverse-momentum spectra and nuclear-modification factors are presented and compared to theoretical-model predictions. The comparisons with different calculations suggest that quark-gluon plasma may be formed in these small collision systems at sNN=200\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200 GeV. However, the volume and the lifetime of the produced medium may be insufficient for observing strangeness-enhancement and jet-quenching effects. Comparison with calculations suggests that the main production mechanisms of ϕϕ mesons at midrapidity may be different in pp++Al versus p/d/p/d/3^3He++Au collisions at sNN=200\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200 GeV. While thermal quark recombination seems to dominate in p/d/p/d/3^3He++Au collisions, fragmentation seems to be the main production mechanism in pp++Al collisions.

Systematic study of nuclear effects in pp++Al, pp++Au, dd++Au, and 3^{3}He++Au collisions at sNN=200\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200 GeV using π0π^0 production

The PHENIX collaboration presents a systematic study of π0π^0 production from pp++pp, pp++Al, pp++Au, dd++Au, and 3^{3}He++Au collisions at sNN=200\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200 GeV. Measurements were performed with different centrality selections as well as the total inelastic, 0%--100%, selection for all collision systems. For 0%--100% collisions, the nuclear modification factors, RxAR_{xA}, are consistent with unity for pTp_T above 8 GeV/cc, but exhibit an enhancement in peripheral collisions and a suppression in central collisions. The enhancement and suppression characteristics are similar for all systems for the same centrality class. It is shown that for high-pTp_T-π0π^0 production, the nucleons in the dd and 3^3He interact mostly independently with the Au nucleus and that the counter intuitive centrality dependence is likely due to a physical correlation between multiplicity and the presence of a hard scattering process. These observations disfavor models where parton energy loss has a significant contribution to nuclear modifications in small systems. Nuclear modifications at lower pTp_T resemble the Cronin effect -- an increase followed by a peak in central or inelastic collisions and a plateau in peripheral collisions. The peak height has a characteristic ordering by system size as pp++Au >> dd++Au >> 3^{3}He++Au >> pp++Al. For collisions with Au ions, current calculations based on initial state cold nuclear matter effects result in the opposite order, suggesting the presence of other contributions to nuclear modifications, in particular at lower pTp_T.

Transverse-single-spin asymmetries of charged pions at midrapidity in transversely polarized p+pp{+}p collisions at s=200\sqrt{s}=200 GeV

In 2015, the PHENIX collaboration has measured single-spin asymmetries for charged pions in transversely polarized proton-proton collisions at the center of mass energy of s=200\sqrt{s}=200 GeV. The pions were detected at central rapidities of ∣η∣<0.35|η|<0.35. The single-spin asymmetries are consistent with zero for each charge individually, as well as consistent with the previously published neutral-pion asymmetries in the same rapidity range. However, they show a slight indication of charge-dependent differences which may suggest a flavor dependence in the underlying mechanisms that create these asymmetries.

Transverse momentum dependent forward neutron single spin asymmetries in transversely polarized pp++pp collisions at s=200\sqrt{s}=200 GeV

In 2015, the PHENIX collaboration has measured very forward (η>6.8η>6.8) single-spin asymmetries of inclusive neutrons in transversely polarized proton-proton and proton-nucleus collisions at a center of mass energy of 200 GeV. A previous publication from this data set concentrated on the nuclear dependence of such asymmetries. In this measurement the explicit transverse-momentum dependence of inclusive neutron single spin asymmetries for proton-proton collisions is extracted using a bootstrapping-unfolding technique on the transverse momenta. This explicit transverse-momentum dependence will help improve the understanding of the mechanisms that create these asymmetries.

Evolution of pi^0 suppression in Au+Au collisions from sqrt(s_NN) = 39 to 200 GeV

Neutral-pion, pi^0, spectra were measured at midrapidity (|y|<0.35) in Au+Au collisions at sqrt(s_NN) = 39 and 62.4 GeV and compared to earlier measurements at 200 GeV in the 1<p_T<10 GeV/c transverse-momentum (p_T) range. The high-p_T tail is well described by a power law in all cases and the powers decrease significantly with decreasing center-of-mass energy. The change of powers is very similar to that observed in the corresponding p+p-collision spectra. The nuclear-modification factors (R_AA) show significant suppression and a distinct energy dependence at moderate p_T in central collisions. At high p_T, R_AA is similar for 62.4 and 200 GeV at all centralities. Perturbative-quantum-chromodynamics calculations that describe R_AA well at 200 GeV, fail to describe the 39 GeV data, raising the possibility that the relative importance of initial-state effects and soft processes increases at lower energies. A conclusion that the region where hard processes are dominant is reached only at higher p_T, is also supported by the x_T dependence of the x_T-scaling power-law exponent.

Measurement of J/ψJ/ψ at forward and backward rapidity in pp+pp, pp+A+Al, pp+A+Au, and 3^3He+Au collisions at sNN=200 GeV\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200~{\rm GeV}

Charmonium is a valuable probe in heavy-ion collisions to study the properties of the quark gluon plasma, and is also an interesting probe in small collision systems to study cold nuclear matter effects, which are also present in large collision systems. With the recent observations of collective behavior of produced particles in small system collisions, measurements of the modification of charmonium in small systems have become increasingly relevant. We present the results of J/ψJ/ψ measurements at forward and backward rapidity in various small collision systems, pp++pp, pp++Al, pp++Au and 3^3He++Au, at sNN\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200 GeV. The results are presented in the form of the observable RABR_{AB}, the nuclear modification factor, a measure of the ratio of the J/ψJ/ψ invariant yield compared to the scaled yield in pp++pp collisions. We examine the rapidity, transverse momentum, and collision centrality dependence of nuclear effects on J/ψJ/ψ production with different projectile sizes pp and 3^3He, and different target sizes Al and Au. The modification is found to be strongly dependent on the target size, but to be very similar for pp++Au and 3^{3}He++Au. However, for 0%--20% central collisions at backward rapidity, the modification for 3^{3}He++Au is found to be smaller than that for pp++Au, with a mean fit to the ratio of 0.89±0.030.89\pm0.03(stat)±0.08{\pm}0.08(syst), possibly indicating final state effects due to the larger projectile size.

Nuclear-modification factor of charged hadrons at forward and backward rapidity in pp++Al and pp++Au collisions at sNN=200\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200 GeV

The PHENIX experiment has studied nuclear effects in pp++Al and pp++Au collisions at sNN=200\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200 GeV on charged hadron production at forward rapidity (1.4<η<2.41.4<η<2.4, pp-going direction) and backward rapidity (−2.2<η<−1.2-2.2<η<-1.2, AA-going direction). Such effects are quantified by measuring nuclear modification factors as a function of transverse momentum and pseudorapidity in various collision multiplicity selections. In central pp++Al and pp++Au collisions, a suppression (enhancement) is observed at forward (backward) rapidity compared to the binary scaled yields in pp+pp collisions. The magnitude of enhancement at backward rapidity is larger in pp++Au collisions than in pp++Al collisions, which have a smaller number of participating nucleons. However, the results at forward rapidity show a similar suppression within uncertainties. The results in the integrated centrality are compared with calculations using nuclear parton distribution functions, which show a reasonable agreement at the forward rapidity but fail to describe the backward rapidity enhancement.

Production of π0π^0 and ηη mesons in U++U collisions at sNN=192\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=192 GeV

The PHENIX experiment at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider measured π0π^0 and ηη mesons at midrapidity in U++U collisions at sNN=192\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=192 GeV in a wide transverse momentum range. Measurements were performed in the π0(η)→γγπ^0(η)\rightarrowγγ decay modes. A strong suppression of π0π^0 and ηη meson production at high transverse momentum was observed in central U++U collisions relative to binary scaled pp++pp results. Yields of π0π^0 and ηη mesons measured in U++U collisions show similar suppression pattern to the ones measured in Au++Au collisions at sNN=200\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200 GeV for similar numbers of participant nucleons. The ηη/π0π^0 ratios do not show dependence on centrality or transverse momentum, and are consistent with previously measured values in hadron-hadron, hadron-nucleus, nucleus-nucleus, and e+e−e^+e^- collisions.

Measurement of higher cumulants of net-charge multiplicity distributions in Au++Au collisions at sNN=7.7−200\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=7.7-200 GeV

We report the measurement of cumulants (Cn,n=1…4C_n, n=1\ldots4) of the net-charge distributions measured within pseudorapidity (∣η∣<0.35|η|<0.35) in Au++Au collisions at sNN=7.7−200\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=7.7-200 GeV with the PHENIX experiment at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. The ratios of cumulants (e.g. C1/C2C_1/C_2, C3/C1C_3/C_1) of the net-charge distributions, which can be related to volume independent susceptibility ratios, are studied as a function of centrality and energy. These quantities are important to understand the quantum-chromodynamics phase diagram and possible existence of a critical end point. The measured values are very well described by expectation from negative binomial distributions. We do not observe any nonmonotonic behavior in the ratios of the cumulants as a function of collision energy. The measured values of C1/C2=μ/σ2C_1/C_2 = μ/σ^2 and C3/C1=Sσ3/μC_3/C_1 = Sσ^3/μ can be directly compared to lattice quantum-chromodynamics calculations and thus allow extraction of both the chemical freeze-out temperature and the baryon chemical potential at each center-of-mass energy.

Measurement of parity-violating spin asymmetries in W±^{\pm} production at midrapidity in longitudinally polarized pp++pp collisions

We present measurements from the PHENIX experiment of large parity-violating single spin asymmetries of high transverse momentum electrons and positrons from W±/ZW^\pm/Z decays, produced in longitudinally polarized pp++pp collisions at center of mass energies of s\sqrt{s}=500 and 510~GeV. These asymmetries allow direct access to the anti-quark polarized parton distribution functions due to the parity-violating nature of the WW-boson coupling to quarks and anti-quarks. The results presented are based on data collected in 2011, 2012, and 2013 with an integrated luminosity of 240 pb−1^{-1}, which exceeds previous PHENIX published results by a factor of more than 27. These high Q2Q^2 data provide an important addition to our understanding of anti-quark parton helicity distribution functions.

Transverse energy production and charged-particle multiplicity at midrapidity in various systems from sNN=7.7\sqrt{s_{NN}}=7.7 to 200 GeV

Measurements of midrapidity charged particle multiplicity distributions, dNch/dηdN_{\rm ch}/dη, and midrapidity transverse-energy distributions, dET/dηdE_T/dη, are presented for a variety of collision systems and energies. Included are distributions for Au++Au collisions at sNN=200\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200, 130, 62.4, 39, 27, 19.6, 14.5, and 7.7 GeV, Cu++Cu collisions at sNN=200\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200 and 62.4 GeV, Cu++Au collisions at sNN=200\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200 GeV, U++U collisions at sNN=193\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=193 GeV, dd++Au collisions at sNN=200\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200 GeV, 3^{3}He++Au collisions at sNN=200\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200 GeV, and pp++pp collisions at sNN=200\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200 GeV. Centrality-dependent distributions at midrapidity are presented in terms of the number of nucleon participants, NpartN_{\rm part}, and the number of constituent quark participants, NqpN_{q{\rm p}}. For all AA++AA collisions down to sNN=7.7\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=7.7 GeV, it is observed that the midrapidity data are better described by scaling with NqpN_{q{\rm p}} than scaling with NpartN_{\rm part}. Also presented are estimates of the Bjorken energy density, εBJ\varepsilon_{\rm BJ}, and the ratio of dET/dηdE_T/dη to dNch/dηdN_{\rm ch}/dη, the latter of which is seen to be constant as a function of centrality for all systems.

An Upgrade Proposal from the PHENIX Collaboration

In this document the PHENIX collaboration proposes a major upgrade to the PHENIX detector at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. This upgrade, sPHENIX, enables an extremely rich jet and beauty quarkonia physics program addressing fundamental questions about the nature of the strongly coupled quark-gluon plasma (QGP), discovered experimentally at RHIC to be a perfect fluid. The startling dynamics of the QGP on fluid-like length scales is an emergent property of quantum chromodynamics (QCD), seemingly implicit in the Lagrangian but stubbornly hidden from view. QCD is an asymptotically free theory, but how QCD manifests as a strongly coupled fluid with specific shear viscosity near TCT_C, as low as allowed by the uncertainty principle, is as fundamental an issue as that of how confinement itself arises.

Search for dark photons from neutral meson decays in pp++pp and dd++Au collisions at sNN\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200 GeV

The standard model (SM) of particle physics is spectacularly successful, yet the measured value of the muon anomalous magnetic moment (g−2)μ(g-2)_μ deviates from SM calculations by 3.6σσ. Several theoretical models attribute this to the existence of a "dark photon," an additional U(1) gauge boson, which is weakly coupled to ordinary photons. The PHENIX experiment at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider has searched for a dark photon, UU, in π0,η→γe+e−π^0,η\rightarrow γe^+e^- decays and obtained upper limits of O(2×10−6)\mathcal{O}(2\times10^{-6}) on UU-γγ mixing at 90% CL for the mass range 30<mU<9030<m_U<90 MeV/c2c^2. Combined with other experimental limits, the remaining region in the UU-γγ mixing parameter space that can explain the (g−2)μ(g-2)_μ deviation from its SM value is nearly completely excluded at the 90% confidence level, with only a small region of 29<mU<3229<m_U<32 MeV/c2c^2 remaining.

Nuclear matter effects on J/ψJ/ψ production in asymmetric Cu+Au collisions at sNN\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}} = 200 GeV

We report on J/ψJ/ψ production from asymmetric Cu+Au heavy-ion collisions at sNN\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200 GeV at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider at both forward (Cu-going direction) and backward (Au-going direction) rapidities. The nuclear modification of J/ψJ/ψ yields in Cu++Au collisions in the Au-going direction is found to be comparable to that in Au++Au collisions when plotted as a function of the number of participating nucleons. In the Cu-going direction, J/ψJ/ψ production shows a stronger suppression. This difference is comparable in magnitude and has the same sign as the difference expected from shadowing effects due to stronger low-xx gluon suppression in the larger Au nucleus. The relative suppression is opposite to that expected from hot nuclear matter dissociation, since a higher energy density is expected in the Au-going direction.

Erratum: Measurement of transverse single-spin asymmetries for J/psi production in polarized p+p collisions at sqrt(s)=200 GeV [Phys. Rev. D 82, 112008 (2010)]

We previously reported [Phys. Rev. D 82, 112008 (2010)] measurements of transverse single-spin asymmetries, A_N, in J/psi production from transversely polarized p+p collisions at sqrt(s)=200 GeV with data taken by the PHENIX experiment at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider in 2006 and 2008. Subsequently, we have found errors in the analysis procedures for the 2008 data, which resulted in an erroneous value for the extracted A_N. The errors affected the sorting of events into the correct left/right and forward/backward bins. This produced an incorrect value for the 2008 result, but the 2006 result is unaffected. We have conducted two independent reanalyses with these errors corrected, and we present here the corrected values for the 2008 data and the combined results for 2006 and 2008. The new combined spin asymmetry in the forward region is A_N = -0.026+/-0.026(stat)+/-0.003(sys). Since this asymmetry is consistent with zero, we no longer claim that our results suggest a possible non-zero trigluon correlation function in transversely polarized protons.

J/psi suppression at forward rapidity in Au+Au collisions at sqrt(s_NN)=39 and 62.4 GeV

We present measurements of the J/psi invariant yields in sqrt(s_NN)=39 and 62.4 GeV Au+Au collisions at forward rapidity (1.2<|y|<2.2). Invariant yields are presented as a function of both collision centrality and transverse momentum. Nuclear modifications are obtained for central relative to peripheral Au+Au collisions (R_CP) and for various centrality selections in Au+Au relative to scaled p+p cross sections obtained from other measurements (R_AA). The observed suppression patterns at 39 and 62.4 GeV are quite similar to those previously measured at 200 GeV. This similar suppression presents a challenge to theoretical models that contain various competing mechanisms with different energy dependencies, some of which cause suppression and others enhancement.

Medium modification of jet fragmentation in Au+Au collisions at sqrt(s_NN)=200 GeV measured in direct photon-hadron correlations

The jet fragmentation function is measured with direct photon-hadron correlations in p+p and Au+Au collisions at sqrt(s_NN)=200 GeV. The p_T of the photon is an excellent approximation to the initial p_T of the jet and the ratio z_T=p_T^h/p_T^γis used as a proxy for the jet fragmentation function. A statistical subtraction is used to extract the direct photon-hadron yields in Au+Au collisions while a photon isolation cut is applied in p+p. I_ AA, the ratio of jet fragment yield in Au+Au to that in p+p, indicates modification of the jet fragmentation function. Suppression, most likely due to energy loss in the medium, is seen at high z_T. The fragment yield at low z_T is enhanced at large angles. Such a trend is expected from redistribution of the lost energy into increased production of low-momentum particles.

sPHENIX: An Upgrade Concept from the PHENIX Collaboration

The PHENIX collaboration presents a concept for a major upgrade to the PHENIX detector at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC). This upgrade, referred to as sPHENIX, brings exciting new capability to the RHIC program by opening new and important channels for experimental investigation and utilizing fully the luminosity of the recently upgraded RHIC facility. sPHENIX enables a compelling jet physics program that will address fundamental questions about the nature of the strongly coupled quark-gluon plasma discovered experimentally at RHIC to be a perfect fluid. The upgrade concept addresses specific questions whose answers are necessary to advance our understanding of the quark-gluon plasma: (1) How to reconcile the observed strongly coupled quark-gluon plasma with the asymptotically free theory of quarks and gluons? (2) What are the dynamical changes to the quark-gluon plasma in terms of quasiparticles and excitations as a function of temperature? (3) How sharp is the transition of the quark-gluon plasma from the most strongly coupled regime near Tc to a weakly coupled system of partons known to emerge at asymptotically high temperatures? In three Appendices, we detail the additional physics capabilities gained through further upgrades: (A) two midrapidity detector additions, (B) a forward rapidity upgrade, and (C) an evolution to an ePHENIX detector suitable for a future Electron Ion Collider at RHIC.

Production of omega mesons in p+p, d+Au, Cu+Cu, and Au+Au collisions at sqrt(s_NN)=200 GeV

The PHENIX experiment at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) has measured omega meson production via leptonic and hadronic decay channels in p+p, d+Au, Cu+Cu, and Au+Au collisions at sqrt(s_NN) = 200 GeV. The invariant transverse momentum spectra measured in different decay modes give consistent results. Measurements in the hadronic decay channel in Cu+Cu and Au+Au collisions show that omega production has a suppression pattern at high transverse momentum, similar to that of pi^0 and eta in central collisions, but no suppression is observed in peripheral collisions. The nuclear modification factors, R_AA, are consistent in Cu+Cu and Au+Au collisions at similar numbers of participant nucleons.

Suppression of back-to-back hadron pairs at forward rapidity in d+Au Collisions at sqrt(s_NN)=200 GeV

Back-to-back hadron pair yields in d+Au and p+p collisions at sqrt(s_NN)=200 GeV were measured with the PHENIX detector at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. Rapidity separated hadron pairs were detected with the trigger hadron at pseudorapidity |eta|<0.35 and the associated hadron at forward rapidity (deuteron direction, 3.0<eta<3.8). Pairs were also detected with both hadrons measured at forward rapidity; in this case the yield of back-to-back hadron pairs in d+Au collisions with small impact parameters is observed to be suppressed by a factor of 10 relative to p+p collisions. The kinematics of these pairs is expected to probe partons in the Au nucleus with low fraction x of the nucleon momenta, where the gluon densities rise sharply. The observed suppression as a function of nuclear thickness, p_T, and eta points to cold nuclear matter effects arising at high parton densities.

Cross Section and Parity Violating Spin Asymmetries of W^+/- Boson Production in Polarized p+p Collisions at sqrt(s)=500 GeV

Large parity violating longitudinal single spin asymmetries A^{e^-}_L= -0.86^{+0.14}_{-0.30} and A^{e^+}_L= 0.88^{+0.12}_{-0.71} are observed for inclusive high transverse momentum electrons and positrons in polarized pp collisions at a center of mass energy of \sqrt{s}=500\ GeV with the PHENIX detector at RHIC. These e^{+/-} come mainly from the decay of W^{+/-} and Z^0 bosons, and the asymmetries directly demonstrate parity violation in the couplings of the W^{\pm} to the light quarks. The observed electron and positron yields were used to estimate W^\pm boson production cross sections equal to σ(pp \to W^+ X) \times BR(W^ \to ν_e)= 144.1+/-21.2(stat)^{+3.4}_{-10.3}(syst) +/- 15%(norm) pb, and σ(pp \to W^{-}X) \times BR(W^\to e^-\bar{ν_e}) = 31.7+/-12.1(stat)^{+10.1}_{-8.2}(syst)+/-15%(norm) pb.

Measurement of Transverse Single-Spin Asymmetries for J/psi Production in Polarized p+p Collisions at sqrt(s) = 200 GeV

We report the first measurement of transverse single-spin asymmetries in J/ψJ/ψ production from transversely polarized p+pp+p collisions at s=200\sqrt{s} = 200 GeV with data taken by the PHENIX experiment in 2006 and 2008. The measurement was performed over the rapidity ranges 1.2<∣y∣<2.21.2 < |y| < 2.2 and ∣y∣<0.35 |y| < 0.35 for transverse momenta up to 6 GeV/cc. J/ψJ/ψ production at RHIC is dominated by processes involving initial-state gluons, and transverse single-spin asymmetries of the J/ψJ/ψ can provide access to gluon dynamics within the nucleon. Such asymmetries may also shed light on the long-standing question in QCD of the J/ψJ/ψ production mechanism. Asymmetries were obtained as a function of J/ψJ/ψ transverse momentum and Feynman-xx, with a value of −0.086±0.026stat±0.003syst-0.086 \pm 0.026^{\rm stat} \pm 0.003^{\rm syst} in the forward region. This result suggests possible nonzero trigluon correlation functions in transversely polarized protons and, if well defined in this reaction, a nonzero gluon Sivers distribution function.

Nuclear modification factors of phi mesons in d+Au, Cu+Cu and Au+Au collisions at sqrt(S_NN)=200 GeV

The PHENIX experiment at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) has performed systematic measurements of phi meson production in the K+K- decay channel at midrapidity in p+p, d+Au, Cu+Cu and Au+Au collisions at sqrt(S_NN)=200 GeV. Results are presented on the phi invariant yield and the nuclear modification factor R_AA for Au+Au and Cu+Cu, and R_dA for d+Au collisions, studied as a function of transverse momentum (1<p_T<7 GeV/c) and centrality. In central and mid-central Au+Au collisions, the R_AA of phi exhibits a suppression relative to expectations from binary scaled p+p results. The amount of suppression is smaller than that of the neutral pion and the eta meson in the intermediate p_T range (2--5 GeV/c); whereas at higher p_T the phi, pi^0, and eta show similar suppression. The baryon (protons and anti-protons) excess observed in central Au+Au collisions at intermediate p_T is not observed for the phi meson despite the similar mass of the proton and the phi. This suggests that the excess is linked to the number of constituent quarks rather than the hadron mass. The difference gradually disappears with decreasing centrality and for peripheral collisions the R_AA values for both particles are consistent with binary scaling. Cu+Cu collisions show the same yield and suppression as Au+Au collisions for the same number of N_part. The R_dA of phi shows no evidence for cold nuclear effects within uncertainties.
