The Astro-WISE datacentric information system

In this paper we present the various concepts behind the Astro-WISE Information System. The concepts form a blueprint for general scientific information systems (WISE) which can satisfy a wide and challenging range of requirements for the data dissemination, storage and processing for various fields in science. We review the main features of the information system and its practical implementation.

The Astro-WISE Optical Image Pipeline: Development and Implementation

We have designed and implemented a novel way to process wide-field astronomical data within a distributed environment of hardware resources and humanpower. The system is characterized by integration of archiving, calibration, and post-calibration analysis of data from raw, through intermediate, to final data products. It is a true integration thanks to complete linking of data lineage from the final catalogs back to the raw data. This paper describes the pipeline processing of optical wide-field astronomical data from the WFI (http://www.eso.org/lasilla/instruments/wfi/) and OmegaCAM (http://www.astro-wise.org/~omegacam/) instruments using the Astro-WISE information system (the Astro-WISE Environment or simply AWE). This information system is an environment of hardware resources and humanpower distributed over Europe. AWE is characterized by integration of archiving, data calibration, post-calibration analysis, and archiving of raw, intermediate, and final data products. The true integration enables a complete data processing cycle from the raw data up to the publication of science-ready catalogs. The advantages of this system for very large datasets are in the areas of: survey operations management, quality control, calibration analyses, and massive processing.

The central stars of the planetary nebulae NGC 7027 and NGC 6543

Infrared spectra of NGC 7027 and NGC 6543 ranging from 2.4 to 45 micron were obtained with the Short Wavelength Spectrometer on board the Infrared Space Observatory. A first analysis of these spectra, with the aid of photo-ionization models, is presented. We report the first detection of the Ar VI 4.53 micron and Ne VI 7.65 micron lines in the spectrum of NGC 7027. When compared with older observations it is clear that the Ar VI line and possibly also other lines have increased in strength since 1981. We argue that a likely explanation for this variability is a change in the spectral energy distribution of the central star, possibly an increase in effective temperature. However, this result needs to be confirmed by further observations. We also report a non-detection of the O IV 25.9 micron line and the first detection of the Na III 7.32 micron line in the spectrum of NGC 6543. The non-detection is not expected based on a blackbody approximation for the spectrum of the central star. The ionization threshold for O(3+) is just beyond the He II limit, and the absence of this line shows that the stellar flux drops at least by a factor 350 at the He II limit. Modeling the O IV line may prove to be a valuable test for atmosphere models.
