Beta decay of the very neutron-deficient 60^{60}Ge and 62^{62}Ge nuclei

We report here the results of a study of the ββ decay of the proton-rich Ge isotopes, 60^{60}Ge and 62^{62}Ge, produced in an experiment at the RIKEN Nishina Center. We have improved our knowledge of the half-lives of 62^{62}Ge (73.5(1) ms), 60^{60}Ge (25.0(3) ms) and its daughter nucleus, 60^{60}Ga (69.4(2) ms). We measured individual ββ-delayed proton and γγ emissions and their related branching ratios. Decay schemes and absolute Fermi and Gamow-Teller transition strengths have been determined. The mass excesses of the nuclei under study have been deduced. A total ββ-delayed proton-emission branching ratio of 67(3)% has been obtained for 60^{60}Ge. New information has been obtained on the energy levels populated in 60^{60}Ga and on the 1/2−^- excited state in the βpβp daughter 59^{59}Zn. We extracted a ground state to ground state feeding of 85.3(3)% for the decay of 62^{62}Ge. Eight new γγ lines have been added to the de-excitation of levels populated in the 62^{62}Ga daughter.

Charge-changing cross sections for 42–51^{42\textrm{--}51}Ca and effect of charged-particle evaporation induced by neutron removal reaction

Charge-changing cross sections σCCσ_\mathrm{CC} for 42–51^{42\textrm{--}51}Ca on a carbon target at around 280~MeV/nucleon have been measured. The measured σCCσ_\mathrm{CC} values differ significantly from the previously developed calculations based on the Glauber model. However, through introduction of the charged-particle evaporation effect induced by the neutron-removal reaction in addition to the Glauber-model calculation, experimental σCCσ_\mathrm{CC} values on 12^{12}C at around 300~MeV/nucleon for nuclides from C to Fe isotopes are all reproduced with approximately 1\% accuracy. This proposed model systematically reproduces σCCσ_\mathrm{CC} data without phenomenological corrections, and can also explain experimental σCCσ_\mathrm{CC} values obtained in other energy regions.

Swelling of doubly magic 48^{48}Ca core in Ca isotopes beyond N=28N=28

Interaction cross sections for 42-51^{42\textrm{-}51}Ca on a carbon target at 280 MeV/nucleon have been measured for the first time. The neutron number dependence of derived root-mean-square matter radii shows a significant increase beyond the neutron magic number N=28N=28. Furthermore, this enhancement of matter radii is much larger than that of the previously measured charge radii, indicating a novel growth in neutron skin thickness. A simple examination based on the Fermi-type distribution, and the Mean-Field calculations point out that this anomalous enhancement of the nuclear size beyond N=28N=28 results from an enlargement of the core by a sudden increase in the surface diffuseness of the neutron density distribution, which implies the swelling of the bare 48^{48}Ca core in Ca isotopes beyond N=28N=28.

Charge-changing-cross-section measurements of 12−16^{12-16}C at around 45A45A MeV and development of a Glauber model for incident energies 10A−2100A10A-2100A MeV

We have measured for the first time the charge-changing cross sections (σCCσ_{\text{CC}}) of 12−16^{12-16}C on a 12^{12}C target at energies below 100A100A MeV. To analyze these low-energy data, we have developed a finite-range Glauber model with a global parameter set within the optical-limit approximation which is applicable to reaction cross section (σRσ_{\text{R}}) and σCCσ_{\text{CC}} measurements at incident energies from 10AA to 2100A2100A MeV. Adopting the proton-density distribution of 12^{12}C known from the electron-scattering data, as well as the bare total nucleon-nucleon cross sections, and the real-to-imaginary-part ratios of the forward proton-proton elastic scattering amplitude available in the literatures, we determine the energy-dependent slope parameter βpnβ_{\rm pn} of the proton-neutron elastic differential cross section so as to reproduce the existing σRσ_{\text{R}} and interaction-cross-section data for 12^{12}C+12^{12}C over a wide range of incident energies. The Glauber model thus formulated is applied to calculate the σRσ_{\text{\tiny R}}'s of 12^{12}C on a 9^9Be and 27^{27}Al targets at various incident energies. Our calculations show excellent agreement with the experimental data. Applying our model to the σRσ_{\text{\tiny R}} and σCCσ_{\text{\tiny CC}} for the "neutron-skin" 16^{16}C nucleus, we reconfirm the importance of measurements at incident energies below 100A100A MeV. The proton root-mean-square radii of 12−16^{12-16}C are extracted using the measured σCCσ_{\text{CC}}'s and the existing σRσ_{\text{R}} data. The results for 12−14^{12-14}C are consistent with the values from the electron scatterings, demonstrating the feasibility, usefulness of the σCCσ_{\text{CC}} measurement and the present Glauber model.

New neutron-deficient isotopes from 78^{78}Kr fragmentation

In an experiment with the BigRIPS separator at the RIKEN Nishina Center, the fragmentation of a 78^{78}Kr beam allowed the observation of new neutron-deficient isotopes at the proton drip-line. Clean identification spectra could be produced and 63^{63}Se, 67^{67}Kr, and 68^{68}Kr were identified for the first time. In addition, 59^{59}Ge was also observed. Three of these isotopes, 59^{59}Ge, 63^{63}Se, and 67^{67}Kr, are potential candidates for ground-state two-proton radioactivity. In addition, the isotopes 58^{58}Ge, 62^{62}Se, and 66^{66}Kr were also sought but without success. The present experiment also allowed the determination of production cross sections for some of the most exotic isotopes. These measurements confirm the trend already observed that the empirical parameterization of fragmentation cross sections, EPAX, significantly overestimates experimental cross sections in this mass region.

Nonlinear relativistic mean-field theory studies on He isotopes

The ground state properties of He isotopes are studied in the nonlinear relativistic mean-field (RMF) theory with force parameters NL-SH and TM2. The modified Glauber model as a gatekeeper is introduced to check the calculations. The investigation shows that the RMF theory provides a good description on the properties of He isotopes. The many-body space information of 4He + neutrons are obtained reliably. As a product, the calculation gives a strong evidence for neutron halo in 5He.

Collectivity evolution in the neutron-rich Pd isotopes towards the N=82 shell closure

The neutron-rich, even-even 122,124,126Pd isotopes has been studied via in-beam gamma-ray spectroscopy at the RIKEN Radioactive Isotope Beam Factory. Excited states at 499(9), 590(11), and 686(17) keV were found in the three isotopes, which we assign to the respective 2+ -> 0+ decays. In addition, a candidate for the 4+ state at 1164(20) keV was observed in 122Pd. The resulting Ex(2+) systematics are essentially similar to those of the Xe (Z=54) isotopic chain and theoretical prediction by IBM-2, suggesting no serious shell quenching in the Pd isotopes in the vicinity of N=82.

Intermediate-energy Coulomb excitation of 104Sn: Moderate E2 strength decrease approaching 100Sn

The reduced transition probability B(E2) of the first excited 2+ state in the nucleus 104Sn was measured via Coulomb excitation in inverse kinematics at intermediate energies. A value of 0.163(26) e^2b^2 was extracted from the absolute cross-section on a Pb target, while the method itself was verified with the stable 112Sn isotope. Our result deviates significantly from the earlier reported value of 0.10(4) e^2b^2 and corresponds to a moderate decrease of excitation strength relative to the almost constant values observed in the proton-rich, even-A 106-114Sn isotopes. Present state-of-the-art shell-model predictions, which include proton and neutron excitations across the N=Z=50 shell closures as well as standard polarization charges, underestimate the experimental findings

Production cross section measurements of radioactive isotopes by BigRIPS separator at RIKEN RI Beam Factory

We have measured the production rates and production cross sections for a variety of radioactive isotopes which were produced from 124Xe, 48Ca, and 238U beams at an energy of 345 MeV/nucleon using the BigRIPS separator at the RIKEN Nishina Center RI Beam Factory (RIBF). Proton-rich isotopes with atomic numbers Z = 40 to 52 and neutron-rich isotopes with Z = 5 to 16 were produced by projectile fragmentation of the 124Xe and 48Ca beam on Be targets, respectively. Neutron-rich isotopes with Z = 20 to 59 were produced by in-flight fission of the 238U beam, in which both Be and Pb were used as production targets. The measured production rates and production cross sections were compared with those of the LISE++ calculations, and overall fairly good agreement has been obtained. Furthermore, in the measurements with the 124Xe beam, we have discovered four new isotopes on the proton-drip line, 85,86Ru and 81,82Mo, and obtained the clear evidence that 103Sb is particle unbound with an upper limit of 49 ns for the half-life. The measurements of projectile-fragment momentum distributions have been also performed with the 124Xe beam, in which the low-momentum tails of the distributions have been measured for the first time at the energy of 345 MeV/nucleon.

Possible evidence of tensor interactions in 16O observed via (p,d) reaction

We have measured 16O(p,d) reaction using 198-, 295- and 392-MeV proton beams to search for a direct evidence on the effect of the tensor interactions in light nucleus. Differential cross sections of the one-neutron transfer reactions populating the ground states and several low-lying excited states in 15O were measured. Comparing the ratios of the cross sections for each excited state to the one for the ground state over a wide range of momentum transfer, we found a marked enhancement for the positive-parity state(s). The observation indicates large components of high-momentum neutrons in the initial ground-state configurations, due possibly to the tensor interactions.
