Long-range p-d exchange interaction in a ferromagnet-semiconductor hybrid structure

Hybrid structures synthesized from different materials have attracted considerable attention because they may allow not only combination of the functionalities of the individual constituents but also mutual control of their properties. To obtain such a control an interaction between the components needs to be established. For coupling the magnetic properties, an exchange interaction has to be implemented which typically depends on wave function overlap and is therefore short-ranged, so that it may be compromised across the interface. Here we study a hybrid structure consisting of a ferromagnetic Co-layer and a semiconducting CdTe quantum well, separated by a thin (Cd,Mg)Te barrier. In contrast to the expected p-d exchange that decreases exponentially with the wave function overlap of quantum well holes and magnetic Co atoms, we find a long-ranged, robust coupling that does not vary with barrier width up to more than 10 nm. We suggest that the resulting spin polarization of the holes is induced by an effective p-d exchange that is mediated by elliptically polarized phonons.

Resolving kinematic ambiguities in QCD predictions for Deeply Virtual Compton Scattering

The existing QCD predictions for the Deeply Virtual Compton Scattering (DVCS) depend on the convention used for the skewedness parameter and on the reference frame used to define helicity amplitudes. These ambiquities are formally power-suppressed but numerically significant. They are cancelled by finite-$t$ and target mass corrections that have been calculated recently to the $1/Q^2$ accuracy. It turns out that these corrections can be minimized, at least for unpolarized observables, by choosing a specific reference frame where longitudinal directions are defined by the photon momenta.

On timelike and spacelike hard exclusive reactions

We show to next-to-leading order accuracy in the strong coupling alpha_s how the collinear factorization properties of QCD in the generalized Bjorken regime relate exclusive amplitudes for spacelike and timelike hadronic processes. This yields simple space--to--timelike relations linking the amplitudes for electroproduction of a photon or meson to those for photo- or meso-production of a lepton pair. These relations constitute a new test of the relevance of leading twist analyzes of experimental data.

Inspiral-merger-ringdown waveforms for black-hole binaries with non-precessing spins

We present the first analytical inspiral-merger-ringdown gravitational waveforms from binary black holes (BBHs) with non-precessing spins, that is based on a description of the late-inspiral, merger and ringdown in full general relativity. By matching a post-Newtonian description of the inspiral to a set of numerical-relativity simulations, we obtain a waveform family with a conveniently small number of physical parameters. These waveforms will allow us to detect a larger parameter space of BBH coalescence, including a considerable fraction of precessing binaries in the comparable-mass regime, thus significantly improving the expected detection rates.

Measurement of azimuthal asymmetries associated with deeply virtual Compton scattering on a longitudinally polarized deuterium target

Azimuthal asymmetries in exclusive electroproduction of a real photon from a longitudinally polarized deuterium target are measured with respect to target polarization alone and with respect to target polarization combined with beam helicity and/or beam charge. The asymmetries appear in the distribution of the real photons in the azimuthal angle $ϕ$ around the virtual photon direction, relative to the lepton scattering plane. The asymmetries arise from the deeply virtual Compton scattering process and its interference with the Bethe-Heitler process. The results for the beam-charge and beam-helicity asymmetries from a tensor polarized deuterium target with vanishing vector polarization are shown to be compatible with those from an unpolarized deuterium target, which is expected for incoherent scattering dominant at larger momentum transfer. Furthermore, the results for the single target-spin asymmetry and for the double-spin asymmetry are found to be compatible with the corresponding asymmetries previously measured on a hydrogen target. For coherent scattering on the deuteron at small momentum transfer to the target, these findings imply that the tensor contribution to the cross section is small. Furthermore, the tensor asymmetry is found to be compatible with zero.

The Be/X-ray binary A0535+26 during its recent 2009/2010 outbursts

The Be/X-ray binary A0535+26 showed a giant outburst in December 2009 that reached ~5.14 Crab in the 15-50 keV range. Unfortunately, due to Sun constraints it could not be observed by most X-ray satellites. The outburst was preceded by four weaker outbursts associated with the periastron passage of the neutron star. The fourth of them, in August 2009, presented a peculiar double-peaked light curve, with a first peak lasting about 9 days that reached a (15-50 keV) flux of 440 mCrab. The flux then decreased to less than 220 mCrab, and increased again reaching 440 Crab around the periastron. The outburst was monitored with INTEGRAL, RXTE, and Suzaku TOO observations. One orbital period (~111 days) after the 2009 giant outburst, a new and unexpectedly bright outburst took place (~1.4Crab in the 15-50 keV range). It was monitored with TOO obs ervations with INTEGRAL, RXTE, Suzaku, and Swift. First results of the spectral and timing analysis of these observations are presented, with a specific focus on the cyclotron lines present in the system and its variation with the mass accretion rate.

Exclusive electroproduction revisited: treating kinematical effects

Generalized parton distributions of the nucleon are accessed via exclusive leptoproduction of the real photon. While earlier analytical considerations of phenomenological observables were restricted to twist-three accuracy, i.e., taking into account only terms suppressed by a single power of the hard scale, in the present study we revisit this differential cross section within the helicity formalism and restore power-suppressed effects stemming from the process kinematics exactly. We restrict ourselves to the phenomenologically important case of lepton scattering off a longitudinally polarized nucleon, where the photon flips its helicity at most by one unit.

Cosmic ray composition at high energies: Results from the TRACER project

The TRACER instrument Transition Radiation Array for Cosmic Energetic Radiation is designed to measure the individual energy spectra of cosmic-ray nuclei in long-duration balloon flights The large geometric factor of TRACER 5 m 2 sr permits statistically significant measurements at particle energies well beyond 10 14 eV TRACER identifies individual cosmic-ray nuclei with single-element resolution and measures their energy over a very wide range from about 0 5 to 10 000 GeV nucleon This is accomplished with a gas detector system of 1600 single-wire proportional tubes and plastic fiber radiators that measure specific ionization and transition radiation signals combined with plastic scintillators and acrylic Cherenkov counters A two-week flight in Antarctica in December 2003 has led to a measurement of the nuclear species oxygen to iron O Ne Mg Si S Ar Ca and Fe up to about 3 000 GeV nucleon We shall present the energy spectra and relative abundances for these elements and discuss the implication of the results in the context of current models of acceleration and propagation of galactic cosmic rays The instrument has been refurbished for a second long-duration flight in the Northern hemisphere scheduled for summer 2006 For this flight the dynamic range of TRACER has been extended to permit inclusion of the lighter elements B C and N in the measurement.

Electron Scattering with Polarized Targets at TESLA

Measurements of polarized electron-nucleon scattering can be realized at the TESLA linear collider facility with projected luminosities that are about two orders of magnitude higher than those expected of other experiments at comparable energies. Longitudinally polarized electrons, accelerated as a small fraction of the total current in the e+ arm of TESLA, can be directed onto a solid state target that may be either longitudinally or transversely polarized. A large variety of polarized parton distribution and fragmentation functions can be determined with unprecedented accuracy, many of them for the first time. A main goal of the experiment is the precise measurement of the x- and Q^2-dependence of the experimentally totally unknown quark transversity distributions that will complete the information on the nucleon's quark spin structure as relevant for high energy processes. Comparing their Q^2-evolution to that of the corresponding helicity distributions constitutes an important precision test of the predictive power of QCD in the spin sector. Measuring transversity distributions and tensor charges allows access to the hitherto unmeasured chirally odd operators in QCD which are of great importance to understand the role of chiral symmetry. The possibilities of using unpolarized targets and of experiments with a real photon beam turn TESLA-N into a versatile next-generation facility at the intersection of particle and nuclear physics.

The Very Energetic Radiation Imaging Telescope Array System (VERITAS)

We give an overview of the current status and scientific goals of VERITAS, a proposed hexagonal array of seven 10 m aperture imaging Cherenkov telescopes. The selected site is Montosa Canyon (1390 m a.s.l.) at the Whipple Observatory, Arizona. Each telescope, of 12 m focal length, will initially be equipped with a 499 element photomultiplier camera covering a 3.5 degree field of view. A central station will initiate the readout of 500 MHz FADCs upon receipt of multiple telescope triggers. The minimum detectable flux sensitivity will be 0.5% of the Crab Nebula flux at 200 GeV. Detailed simulations of the array's performance are presented elsewhere at this meeting. VERITAS will operate primarily as a gamma-ray observatory in the 50 GeV to 50 TeV range for the study of active galaxies, supernova remnants, pulsars and gamma-ray bursts.

Broken conformal invariance and spectrum of anomalous dimensions in QCD

Employing the operator algebra of the conformal group and the conformal Ward identities, we derive the constraints for the anomalies of dilatation and special conformal transformations of the local twist-2 operators in Quantum Chromodynamics. We calculate these anomalies in the leading order of perturbation theory in the minimal subtraction scheme. From the conformal consistency relation we derive then the off-diagonal part of the anomalous dimension matrix of the conformally covariant operators in the two-loop approximation of the coupling constant in terms of these quantities. We deduce corresponding off-diagonal parts of the Efremov-Radyushkin-Brodsky-Lepage kernels responsible for the evolution of the exclusive distribution amplitudes and non-forward parton distributions in the next-to-leading order in the flavour singlet channel for the chiral-even parity-odd and -even sectors as well as for the chiral-odd one. We also give the analytical solution of the corresponding evolution equations exploiting the conformal partial wave expansion.

Next-to-leading order evolution of twist-two conformal operators: The abelian case

We present the method, based on the use of the broken conformal Ward identities, for the calculation of the anomalous dimensions of conformal operators beyond the leading order of perturbation theory. By means of this technique we find the complete set of two-loop corrections to the off-diagonal elements of the anomalous dimension matrix (the diagonal ones are known from deep inelastic scattering calculations) of the parity odd and even singlet local operators in the Abelian gauge theory. We reconstruct corresponding exclusive two-loop evolution kernels and give the reduction formulae for the restoration of the diagonal part of the ER-BL kernels from the DGLAP splitting functions.

Predictions from conformal algebra for the deeply virtual Compton scattering

Basing on the constraint equalities which arise from the algebra of the collinear conformal group and the conformal operator product expansion, we predict the solutions of the leading order evolution equations for the non-forward distributions, including transversity, in terms of the conformal moments; next-to-leading order flavour singlet coefficient functions for the polarized and unpolarized deeply virtual Compton scattering; as well as the contribution from renormalon chains to the eigenfunctions of the exclusive non-singlet evolution kernel.
