Some topological problems on the configuration spaces of Artin and Coxeter groups

In the first part we review some topological and algebraic aspects in the theory of Artin and Coxeter groups, both in the finite and infinite case (but still, finitely generated). In the following parts, among other things, we compute the Schwartz genus of the covering associated to the orbit space for all affine Artin groups. We also give a partial computation of the cohomology of the braid group with non-abelian coefficients coming from geometric representations. We introduce an interesting class of "sheaves over posets", which we call "weighted sheaves over posets", and use them for explicit computations.

The genus of the configuration spaces for Artin groups of affine type

Let (W,S)(W,S) be a Coxeter system, SS finite, and let GWG_{W} be the associated Artin group. One has configuration spaces Y, YW,Y,\ Y_{W}, where GW=π1(YW),G_{W}=π_1(Y_{W}), and a natural WW-covering fW: Y→YW.f_{W}:\ Y\to Y_{W}. The Schwarz genus g(fW)g(f_{W}) is a natural topological invariant to consider. In this paper we generalize this result by computing the Schwarz genus for a class of Artin groups, which includes the affine-type Artin groups. Let K=K(W,S)K=K(W,S) be the simplicial scheme of all subsets J⊂SJ\subset S such that the parabolic group WJ W_J is finite. We introduce the class of groups for which dim(K)dim(K) equals the homological dimension of K,K, and we show that g(fW)g(f_{W}) is always the maximum possible for such class of groups. For affine Artin groups, such maximum reduces to the rank of the group. In general, it is given by dim(XW)+1,dim(X_{W})+1, where XW⊂YW X_{ W}\subset Y_{ W} is a well-known CWCW-complex which has the same homotopy type as YW. Y_{ W}.

Canonical Solution of Classical Magnetic Models with Long-Range Couplings

We study the canonical solution of a family of classical n−vectorn-vector spin models on a generic dd-dimensional lattice; the couplings between two spins decay as the inverse of their distance raised to the power αα, with α<dα<d. The control of the thermodynamic limit requires the introduction of a rescaling factor in the potential energy, which makes the model extensive but not additive. A detailed analysis of the asymptotic spectral properties of the matrix of couplings was necessary to justify the saddle point method applied to the integration of functions depending on a diverging number of variables. The properties of a class of functions related to the modified Bessel functions had to be investigated. For given nn, and for any αα, dd and lattice geometry, the solution is equivalent to that of the α=0α=0 model, where the dimensionality dd and the geometry of the lattice are irrelevant.
