Cuban natural palygorskite nanoclays for the removal of sulfamethoxazole from aqueous solutions

Water pollution with pharmaceutical and personal care products has become a serious environmental. A reasonable strategy to mitigate the problem involves absorbent materials. In particular, the use of natural clays is an advantageous alternative considering their high adsorption capacity and compatibility with the environment. In the present work, the efficacy of a Cuban natural clay (palygorskite, Pal) as support of sulfamethoxazole (SMX), an antibiotic considered an emerging contaminant (EC), was evaluated. The amount of SMX incorporated onto clay was determined by UV spectroscopy. The resulting composite material was characterized by infrared spectroscopy (IR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), thermogravimetric analysis (TG/DTG), zeta potential (ZP), nitrogen adsorption measurements and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The drug desorption studies in aqueous solution indicated the reversibility of the incorporation process, suggesting the potential use of the Pal nanoclay as an effective support of SMX and hence, a good prospect for water decontamination.

Stability of a natural palygorskite after a cycle of adsorption-desorption of an emerging pollutant

In this paper, we evaluate the structural stability of a natural Cuban clay (an adsorbent of organic pollutants) after an adsorption-desorption process. The clay under study was palygorskite, and sulfamethoxazole was the emerging contaminant. The materials were characterized by X-ray diffraction, attenuated total reflection infrared spectroscopy and zeta potential before and after the sulfamethoxazole adsorption-desorption processes. Based on the material integrity, the potentiality of Pal as pollutant adsorbent and its possible reuse in adsorption-desorption cycles was demonstrated.

Leptonic Dynamical Yukawa Couplings

A dynamical origin of the Yukawa couplings is a promising scenario to explain the flavour puzzle. The focus of this letter is set on the role of the neutrino Majorana character: when an $O(2)_{N_R}$ flavour symmetry acts on the right-handed neutrino sector, the minimum of the scalar potential allows for large mixing angles -in contrast to the simplest quark case- and predicts a maximal Majorana phase. This leads to a strong correlation between neutrino mass hierarchy and mixing pattern. Realistic solutions point to the existence of three heavy right-handed neutrinos.

Neutrino and Charged Lepton Flavour Today

Flavour physics is a priceless window on physics beyond the Standard Model. In particular, flavour violation in the lepton sector looks very promising, as high precision measurements are prospected in future experiments investigating on $μ\rightarrow e$ conversion in atomic nuclei: the predictions for this observable are analysed in the context of the type I Seesaw mechanism. Furthermore, new ideas to explain the Flavour Puzzle recently appeared, mainly based on a possible dynamical origin of the Yukawa couplings and on flavour symmetries. The focus of this proceeding will be set on the Minimal Flavour Violation ansatz and on the role of the neutrino Majorana character: when an $O(2)_{N}$ flavour symmetry acts on the right-handed neutrino sector, the minimum of the scalar potential allows for large mixing angles -in contrast to the simplest quark case- and predicts a maximal Majorana phase. This leads to a strong correlation between neutrino mass hierarchy and mixing pattern.

Relating neutrino masses and mixings by discrete symmetries

Lepton mixing can originate from the breaking of a flavor symmetry in different ways in the neutrino and the charged lepton sector. We propose an extension of this framework which allows to connect the mixing parameters with masses, and more precisely, with certain types of degeneracy of the neutrino mass spectrum. We obtain relations between the mixing parameters for the cases of partial degeneracy, m1 = m2, and complete degeneracy, m1 = m2 = m3. These relations determine also the Majorana phases. It is shown that relatively small corrections to these lowest order results can produce the required mass splitting and modify the mixing without significant changes of the other symmetry results.

Discrete symmetries and model-independent patterns of lepton mixing

In the context of discrete flavor symmetries, we elaborate a method that allows one to obtain relations between the mixing parameters in a model-independent way. Under very general conditions, we show that flavor groups of the von Dyck type, that are not necessarily finite, determine the absolute values of the entries of one column of the mixing matrix. We apply our formalism to finite subgroups of the infinite von Dyck groups, such as the modular groups, and find cases that yield an excellent agreement with the best fit values for the mixing angles. We explore the Klein group as the residual symmetry of the neutrino sector and explain the permutation property that appears between the elements of the mixing matrix in this case.

Lepton mixing and discrete symmetries

The pattern of lepton mixing can emerge from breaking a flavor symmetry in different ways in the neutrino and charged lepton Yukawa sectors. In this framework, we derive the conditions imposed on the mixing matrix by the structure of discrete groups of the von Dyck type which include A4, S4 and A5. We show that, in general, these conditions reduce to two equations for the mixing parameters (angles and CP phase δ). These constraints, which correspond to unbroken residual symmetries, are consistent with non-zero 13 mixing and deviations from maximal 2-3 mixing. For the allowed values of mixing angles we predict δ= 60 - 90^{\circ}.

Neutrino production coherence and oscillation experiments

Neutrino oscillations are only observable when the neutrino production, propagation and detection coherence conditions are satisfied. In this paper we consider in detail neutrino production coherence, taking π\to μν\ decay as an example. We compare the oscillation probabilities obtained in two different ways: (1) coherent summation of the amplitudes of neutrino production at different points along the trajectory of the parent pion; (2) averaging of the standard oscillation probability over the neutrino production coordinate in the source. We demonstrate that the results of these two different approaches exactly coincide, provided that the parent pion is considered as pointlike and the detection process is perfectly localized. In this case the standard averaging of the oscillation probability over the finite spatial extensions of the neutrino source (and detector) properly takes possible decoherence effects into account. We analyze the reason for this equivalence of the two approaches and demonstrate that for pion wave packets of finite width σ_{xπ} the equivalence is broken. The leading order correction to the oscillation probability due to σ_{xπ}\ne 0 is shown to be \sim [v_g/(v_g-v_π)]σ_{xπ}/l_{osc}, where v_g and v_π\ are the group velocities of the neutrino and pion wave packets, and l_{osc} is the neutrino oscillation length.

Dark coupling

The two dark sectors of the universe - dark matter and dark energy - may interact with each other. Background and linear density perturbation evolution equations are developed for a generic coupling. We then establish the general conditions necessary to obtain models free from early time non-adiabatic instabilities. As an application, we consider a viable universe in which the interaction strength is proportional to the dark energy density. The scenario does not exhibit "phantom crossing" and is free from instabilities, including early ones. A sizeable interaction strength is compatible with combined WMAP, HST, SN, LSS and H(z) data. Neutrino mass and/or cosmic curvature are allowed to be larger than in non-interacting models. Our analysis sheds light as well on unstable scenarios previously proposed.

One-loop effective potential in M4 x T2 with and without 't Hooft flux

We review the basic notions of compactification in the presence of a background flux. In extra-dimentional models with more than five dimensions, Scherk and Schwarz boundary conditions have to satisfy 't Hooft consistency conditions. Different vacuum configurations can be obtained, depending whether trivial or non-trivial 't Hooft flux is considered. The presence of the "magnetic" background flux provide, in addition, a mechanism for producing four-dimensional chiral fermions. Particularizing to the six-dimensional case, we calculate the one-loop effective potential for a U(N) gauge theory on M4 x T2. We firstly review the well known results of the trivial 't Hooft flux case, where one-loop contributions produce the usual Hosotani dynamical symmetry breaking. Finally we applied our result for describing, for the first time, the one-loop contributions in the non-trivial 't Hooft flux case.
