Constraints on the KS0→μ+μ−K^0_{\mathrm{S}}\rightarrowμ^{+}μ^{-} branching fraction

A search for the decay KS0→μ+μ−K^0_{\mathrm{S}}\rightarrowμ^{+}μ^{-} is performed using proton-proton collision data, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.6 fb−15.6\,\text{fb}^{-1} and collected with the LHCb experiment during 2016, 2017 and 2018 at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV13\,\mathrm{TeV}. The observed signal yield is consistent with zero, yielding an upper limit of B(KS0→μ+μ−)<2.2×10−10{\cal B}(K^0_{\mathrm{S}}\rightarrowμ^{+}μ^{-}) < 2.2 \times 10^{-10} at 90% CL. The limit reduces to B(KS0→μ+μ−)<2.1×10−10{\cal B}(K^0_{\mathrm{S}}\rightarrowμ^{+}μ^{-}) < 2.1 \times 10^{-10} at 90% CL once combined with the result from data taken in 2011 and 2012.

Measurement of branching fraction ratios for B+→D∗+D−K+B^+\to D^{*+}D^-K^+, B+→D∗−D+K+B^+\to D^{*-}D^+K^+, and B0→D∗−D0K+B^0\to D^{*-}D^0K^+ decays

A measurement of four branching-fraction ratios for three-body decays of BB mesons involving two open-charm hadrons in the final state is presented. Run 1 and Run 2 pppp collision data are used, recorded by the LHCb experiment at centre-of-mass energies 77, 88, and 1313 TeV and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 99 fb−1^{-1}. The measured branching-fraction ratios are \[ \begin{eqnarray} \frac{\mathcal{B} (B^+\to D^{*+}D^-K^+)}{\mathcal{B} (B^+\to \kern 0.2em\overline{\kern -0.2em D}{}^0 D^0 K^+)} &=& 0.517 \pm 0.015 \pm 0.013 \pm 0.011 , \\ \frac{\mathcal{B} (B^+\to D^{*-}D^+K^+)}{\mathcal{B} (B^+\to \kern 0.2em\overline{\kern -0.2em D}{}^0 D^0 K^+)} &=& 0.577 \pm 0.016 \pm 0.013 \pm 0.013 , \\ \frac{\mathcal{B} (B^0\to D^{*-}D^0K^+)}{\mathcal{B} (B^0\to D^- D^0 K^+)} &=& 1.754 \pm 0.028 \pm 0.016 \pm 0.035 , \\ \frac{\mathcal{B} (B^+\to D^{*+}D^-K^+)}{\mathcal{B} (B^+\to D^{*-}D^+K^+)} &=& 0.907 \pm 0.033 \pm 0.014 ,\end{eqnarray} \] where the first of the uncertainties is statistical, the second systematic, and the third is due to the uncertainties on the DD-meson branching fractions. These are the most accurate measurements of these ratios to date.

Measurement of differential bbˉb\bar{b}- and ccˉc\bar{c}-dijet cross-sections in the forward region of pppp collisions at s=13 TeV\sqrt{s}=13 ~ \mathrm{TeV}

The inclusive bbˉb \bar{b}- and ccˉc \bar{c}-dijet production cross-sections in the forward region of pppp collisions are measured using a data sample collected with the LHCb detector at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV in 2016. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 1.6 fb−1^{-1}. Differential cross-sections are measured as a function of the transverse momentum and of the pseudorapidity of the leading jet, of the rapidity difference between the jets, and of the dijet invariant mass. A fiducial region for the measurement is defined by requiring that the two jets originating from the two bb or cc quarks are emitted with transverse momentum greater than 20 GeV/c/c, pseudorapidity in the range 2.2<η<4.22.2 < η< 4.2, and with a difference in the azimuthal angle between the two jets greater than 1.5. The integrated bbˉb \bar{b}-dijet cross-section is measured to be 53.0±9.753.0 \pm 9.7 nb, and the total ccˉc \bar{c}-dijet cross-section is measured to be 73±1673 \pm 16 nb. The ratio between ccˉc \bar{c}- and bbˉb \bar{b}-dijet cross-sections is also measured and found to be 1.37±0.271.37 \pm 0.27. The results are in agreement with theoretical predictions at next-to-leading order.

Measurement of the CKM angle γγ in B±→DK±B^\pm\to D K^\pm and B±→Dπ±B^\pm \to D π^\pm decays with D→KS0h+h−D \to K_\mathrm S^0 h^+ h^-

A measurement of CPCP-violating observables is performed using the decays B±→DK±B^\pm\to D K^\pm and B±→Dπ±B^\pm\to D π^\pm, where the DD meson is reconstructed in one of the self-conjugate three-body final states KSπ+π−K_{\mathrm S}π^+π^- and KSK+K−K_{\mathrm S}K^+K^- (commonly denoted KSh+h−K_{\mathrm S} h^+h^-). The decays are analysed in bins of the DD-decay phase space, leading to a measurement that is independent of the modelling of the DD-decay amplitude. The observables are interpreted in terms of the CKM angle γγ. Using a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9 fb−19\,\text{fb}^{-1} collected in proton-proton collisions at centre-of-mass energies of 77, 88, and 13 TeV13\,\text{TeV} with the LHCb experiment, γγ is measured to be (68.7−5.1+5.2)∘\left(68.7^{+5.2}_{-5.1}\right)^\circ. The hadronic parameters rBDKr_B^{DK}, rBDπr_B^{Dπ}, δBDKδ_B^{DK}, and δBDπδ_B^{Dπ}, which are the ratios and strong-phase differences of the suppressed and favoured B±B^\pm decays, are also reported.

Measurement of the shape of the Bs0→Ds∗−μ+νμB_s^0\rightarrow D_s^{*-}μ^{+}ν_μ differential decay rate

The shape of the Bs0→Ds∗−μ+νμB_s^0\rightarrow D_s^{*-}μ^+ν_μ differential decay rate is obtained as a function of the hadron recoil using proton-proton collision data at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.7 fb−1^{-1} collected by the LHCb detector. The Bs0→Ds∗−μ+νμB_s^0\rightarrow D_s^{*-}μ^+ν_μ decay is reconstructed through the decays Ds∗−→Ds−γD_s^{*-}\rightarrow D_s^{-}γ and Ds−→K−K+π−D_s^{-}\rightarrow K^-K^+π^-. The differential decay rate is fitted with the Caprini-Lellouch-Neubert (CLN) and Boyd-Grinstein-Lebed (BGL) parametrisations of the form factors, and the relevant quantities for both are extracted.

Observation of the Λb0→Λc+K+K−π−\varLambda^0_b \to \varLambda^+_c K^+ K^- π^- decay

The Λb0→Λc+K+K−π−\varLambda^0_b \to \varLambda^+_c K^+ K^- π^- decay is observed for the first time using a data sample of proton-proton collisions at centre-of-mass energies of s=7\sqrt{s}=7 and 8 TeV\rm{TeV} collected by the $\mbox{LHCb}$ detector, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3fb−13{\rm{fb}^{-1}}. The ratio of branching fractions between the Λb0→Λc+K+K−π−\varLambda^0_b \to \varLambda^+_c K^+ K^- π^- and the Λb0→Λc+Ds−\varLambda^{0}_{b}\to\varLambda^{+}_{c}D^{-}_{s} decays is measured to be \begin{equation*} \frac{\mathcal{B} ( \varLambda^0_b \to \varLambda^+_c K^+ K^- π^-) } {\mathcal{B} ( \varLambda^0_b \to \varLambda^+_c D^-_s)} = (9.26 \pm 0.29 \pm 0.46 \pm 0.26)\times10^{-2}, \end{equation*} where the first uncertainty is statistical, the second systematic and the third is due to the knowledge of the Ds−→K+K−π−D^-_s \to K^+ K^- π^- branching fraction. No structure on the invariant mass distribution of the Λc+K+\varLambda^+_c K^+ system is found, consistent with no open-charm pentaquark signature.

Sensitivity of the Cherenkov Telescope Array for probing cosmology and fundamental physics with gamma-ray propagation

The Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA), the new-generation ground-based observatory for γγ-ray astronomy, provides unique capabilities to address significant open questions in astrophysics, cosmology, and fundamental physics. We study some of the salient areas of γγ-ray cosmology that can be explored as part of the Key Science Projects of CTA, through simulated observations of active galactic nuclei (AGN) and of their relativistic jets. Observations of AGN with CTA will enable a measurement of γγ-ray absorption on the extragalactic background light with a statistical uncertainty below 15% up to a redshift z=2z=2 and to constrain or detect γγ-ray halos up to intergalactic-magnetic-field strengths of at least 0.3pG. Extragalactic observations with CTA also show promising potential to probe physics beyond the Standard Model. The best limits on Lorentz invariance violation from γγ-ray astronomy will be improved by a factor of at least two to three. CTA will also probe the parameter space in which axion-like particles could constitute a significant fraction, if not all, of dark matter. We conclude on the synergies between CTA and other upcoming facilities that will foster the growth of γγ-ray cosmology.

Sensitivity of the Cherenkov Telescope Array to a dark matter signal from the Galactic centre

We provide an updated assessment of the power of the Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) to search for thermally produced dark matter at the TeV scale, via the associated gamma-ray signal from pair-annihilating dark matter particles in the region around the Galactic centre. We find that CTA will open a new window of discovery potential, significantly extending the range of robustly testable models given a standard cuspy profile of the dark matter density distribution. Importantly, even for a cored profile, the projected sensitivity of CTA will be sufficient to probe various well-motivated models of thermally produced dark matter at the TeV scale. This is due to CTA's unprecedented sensitivity, angular and energy resolutions, and the planned observational strategy. The survey of the inner Galaxy will cover a much larger region than corresponding previous observational campaigns with imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes. CTA will map with unprecedented precision the large-scale diffuse emission in high-energy gamma rays, constituting a background for dark matter searches for which we adopt state-of-the-art models based on current data. Throughout our analysis, we use up-to-date event reconstruction Monte Carlo tools developed by the CTA consortium, and pay special attention to quantifying the level of instrumental systematic uncertainties, as well as background template systematic errors, required to probe thermally produced dark matter at these energies. Amplitude analysis of the B+→π+π+π−B^+ \rightarrow π^+π^+π^- decay

The results of an amplitude analysis of the charmless three-body decay B+→π+π+π−B^+ \rightarrow π^+π^+π^-, in which C ⁣PC\!P-violation effects are taken into account, are reported. The analysis is based on a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3fb−13 \text{fb}^{-1} of pppp collisions recorded with the LHCb detector. The most challenging aspect of the analysis is the description of the behaviour of the π+π−π^+ π^- S-wave contribution, which is achieved by using three complementary approaches based on the isobar model, the K-matrix formalism, and a quasi-model-independent procedure. Additional resonant contributions for all three methods are described using a common isobar model, and include the ρ(770)0ρ(770)^0, ω(782)ω(782) and ρ(1450)0ρ(1450)^0 resonances in the π+π−π^+π^- P-wave, the f2(1270)f_2(1270) resonance in the π+π−π^+π^- D-wave, and the ρ3(1690)0ρ_3(1690)^0 resonance in the π+π−π^+π^- F-wave. Significant C ⁣PC\!P-violation effects are observed in both S- and D-waves, as well as in the interference between the S- and P-waves. The results from all three approaches agree and provide new insight into the dynamics and the origin of C ⁣PC\!P-violation effects in B+→π+π+π−B^+ \rightarrow π^+π^+π^- decays.

Calibration and performance of the LHCb calorimeters in Run 1 and 2 at the LHC

The calibration and performance of the LHCb Calorimeter system in Run 1 and 2 at the LHC are described. After a brief description of the sub-detectors and of their role in the trigger, the calibration methods used for each part of the system are reviewed. The changes which occurred with the increase of beam energy in Run 2 are explained. The performances of the calorimetry for γγ and π0π^0 are detailed. A few results from collisions recorded at s\sqrt {s} = 7, 8 and 13 TeV are shown.

Determination of quantum numbers for several excited charmed mesons observed in B−→D∗+π−π−B^- \to D^{*+} π^- π^- decays

A four-body amplitude analysis of the B−→D∗+π−π−B^- \to D^{*+} π^- π^- decay is performed, where fractions and relative phases of the various resonances contributing to the decay are measured. Several quasi-model-independent analyses are performed aimed at searching for the presence of new states and establishing the quantum numbers of previously observed charmed meson resonances. In particular the resonance parameters and quantum numbers are determined for the D1(2420)D_1(2420), D1(2430)D_1(2430), D0(2550)D_0(2550), D1∗(2600)D^*_1(2600), D2(2740)D_2(2740) and D3∗(2750)D^*_3(2750) states. The mixing between the D1(2420)D_1(2420) and D1(2430)D_1(2430) resonances is studied and the mixing parameters are measured. The dataset corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 4.7 fb−1fb^{-1}, collected in proton-proton collisions at center-of-mass energies of 7, 8 and 13 TeV with the LHCb detector.

First observation of excited Ωb−Ω_b^- states

We report four narrow peaks in the Ξb0K−Ξ_b^0K^- mass spectrum obtained using pppp collisions at center-of-mass energies of 7, 8 and 13 TeV, corresponding to a total integrated luminosity of 9 fb−1^{-1} recorded by the LHCb experiment. Referring to these states by their mass, the mass values are \begin{align*} m(Ω_b(6316)^-) &= 6315.64\pm0.31\pm0.07\pm0.50 {\rm MeV}, \\ m(Ω_b(6330)^-) &= 6330.30\pm0.28\pm0.07\pm0.50 {\rm MeV}, \\ m(Ω_b(6340)^-) &= 6339.71\pm0.26\pm0.05\pm0.50 {\rm MeV}, \\ m(Ω_b(6350)^-) &= 6349.88\pm0.35\pm0.05\pm0.50 {\rm MeV}, \end{align*}where the uncertainties are statistical, systematic and the last is due to the knowledge of the Ξb0Ξ_b^0 mass. The natural widths of the three lower mass states are consistent with zero, and the 90% confidence-level upper limits are determined to be Γ(Ωb(6316)−)<2.8{Γ(Ω_b(6316)^-)<2.8} MeV, Γ(Ωb(6330)−)<3.1{Γ(Ω_b(6330)^-)<3.1} MeV and Γ(Ωb(6340)−)<1.5{Γ(Ω_b(6340)^-)<1.5} MeV. The natural width of the Ωb(6350)−Ω_b(6350)^- peak is 1.4−0.8+1.0±0.11.4^{+1.0}_{-0.8}\pm0.1 MeV, which is 2.5σσ from zero and corresponds to an upper limit of 2.8 MeV. The peaks have local significances ranging from 3.6σσ to 7.2σσ. After accounting for the look-elsewhere effect, the significances of the Ωb(6316)−Ω_b(6316)^- and Ωb(6330)−Ω_b(6330)^- peaks are reduced to 2.1σσ and 2.6σσ respectively, while the two higher mass peaks exceed 5σσ. The observed peaks are consistent with expectations for excited Ωb−Ω_b^- resonances.

First observation of the decay Λb0→ηc(1S)pK−Λ_b^0 \to η_c(1S) p K^-

The decay Λb0→ηc(1S)pK−Λ_b^0 \to η_c(1S) p K^- is observed for the first time using a data sample of proton-proton collisions, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.5 fb−1fb^{-1}, collected with the LHCb experiment at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV. The branching fraction of the decay is measured, using the Λb0→J/ψpK−Λ_b^0 \to J/ψp K^- decay as a normalization mode, to be B(Λb0→ηc(1S)pK−)=(1.06±0.16±0.06−0.19+0.22)×10−4\mathcal{B}(Λ_b^0 \to η_c(1S) p K^-)=(1.06\pm0.16\pm0.06^{+0.22}_{-0.19})\times10^{-4}, where the quoted uncertainties are statistical, systematic and due to external inputs, respectively. A study of the ηc(1S)pη_c(1S) p mass spectrum is performed to search for the Pc(4312)+P_c(4312)^+ pentaquark state. No evidence is observed and an upper limit of \begin{equation*} \frac{\mathcal{B}(Λ_b^0 \to P_c(4312)^+ K^-)\times \mathcal{B}(P_c(4312)^+ \to η_c(1S) p)}{\mathcal{B}(Λ_b^0 \to η_c(1S) p K^-)} < 0.24 \end{equation*} is obtained at the 95% confidence level.

Isospin amplitudes in Λb0→J/ψΛ(Σ0)Λ_b^0\to J/ψΛ(Σ^0) and Ξb0→J/ψΞ0(Λ)Ξ_b^0\to J/ψΞ^0(Λ) decays

Ratios of isospin amplitudes in hadron decays are a useful probe of the interplay between weak and strong interactions, and allow searches for physics beyond the Standard Model. We present the first results on isospin amplitudes in bb-baryon decays, using data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 8.5 fb−1^{-1}, collected with the LHCb detector in pppp collisions at center of mass energies of 7, 8 and 13 TeV. The isospin amplitude ratio ∣A1(Λb0→J/ψΣ0)/A0(Λb0→J/ψΛ)∣|A_1(Λ_b^0\to J/ψΣ^0)/A_0(Λ_b^0\to J/ψΛ)|, where the subscript on AA indicates the final-state isospin, is measured to be less than 1/21.8 at 95\% confidence level. The Cabibbo suppressed Ξb0→J/ψΛΞ_b^0\to J/ψΛ decay is observed for the first time, allowing for the measurement ∣A0(Ξb0→J/ψΛ)/A1/2(Ξb0→J/ψΞ0)∣=0.37±0.06±0.02|A_0(Ξ_b^0\to J/ψΛ)/A_{1/2}(Ξ_b^0\to J/ψΞ^0)| =0.37 \pm 0.06\pm 0.02, where the uncertainties are statistical and systematic, respectively.

Measurement of Ξcc++\mathitΞ_{cc}^{++} production in pppp collisions at s=13\sqrt{s}=13 TeV

The production of Ξcc++\mathitΞ_{cc}^{++} baryons in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of s=13\sqrt{s}=13 TeV is measured in the transverse-momentum range 4<pT<15 GeV4<p_\mathrm{T}<15~\mathrm{GeV}/cc and the rapidity range 2.0<y<4.52.0<y<4.5. The data used in this measurement correspond to an integrated luminosity of 1.7 fb−1\mathrm{fb}^{-1}, recorded by the LHCb experiment during 2016. The ratio of the Ξcc++\mathitΞ_{cc}^{++} production cross-section times the branching fraction of the Ξcc++→Λc+K−π+π+\mathit{Ξ_{cc}^{++} \to Λ_{c}^{+} K^- π^+ π^+} decay relative to the prompt Λc+\mathit{Λ_c^{+}} production cross-section is found to be (2.22±0.27±0.29)×10−4(2.22\pm 0.27 \pm 0.29)\times 10^{-4}, assuming the central value of the measured Ξcc++\mathit{Ξ_{cc}^{++}} lifetime, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic.

Measurement of ∣Vcb∣|V_{cb}| with Bs0→Ds(∗)−μ+νμB_s^0 \to D_s^{(*)-} μ^+ ν_μ decays

The element ∣Vcb∣|V_{cb}| of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix is measured using semileptonic Bs0B_s^0 decays produced in proton-proton collision data collected with the LHCb detector at center-of-mass energies of 7 and 8 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3 fb−1^{-1}. Rates of Bs0→Ds−μ+νμB_s^0 \to D_s^{-} μ^+ ν_μ and Bs0→Ds∗−μ+νμB_s^0 \to D_s^{*-} μ^+ ν_μ decays are analyzed using hadronic form-factor parametrizations derived either by Caprini, Lellouch and Neubert (CLN) or by Boyd, Grinstein and Lebed (BGL). The measured values of ∣Vcb∣|V_{cb}| are (41.4±0.6±0.9±1.2)×10−3{(41.4 \pm 0.6 \pm 0.9 \pm 1.2)\times 10^{-3}} and (42.3±0.8±0.9±1.2)×10−3{(42.3 \pm 0.8 \pm 0.9 \pm 1.2)\times 10^{-3}} in the CLN and BGL parametrization, respectively. The first uncertainty is statistical, the second systematic, and the third is due to the external inputs used in the measurement. These results are in agreement with those obtained from decays of B+B^+ and B0B^0 mesons. They are the first determinations of ∣Vcb∣|V_{cb}| at a hadron-collider experiment and the first using Bs0B_s^0 meson decays.

Measurement of C ⁣PC\!P-averaged observables in the B0→K∗0μ+μ−B^{0}\rightarrow K^{*0}μ^{+}μ^{-} decay

An angular analysis of the B0→K∗0(→K+π−)μ+μ−B^{0}\rightarrow K^{*0}(\to K^{+}π^{-})μ^{+}μ^{-} decay is presented using a data set corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 4.7 fb−1^{-1} of pppp collision data collected with the LHCb experiment. The full set of C ⁣PC\!P-averaged observables are determined in bins of the invariant mass squared of the dimuon system. Contamination from decays with the K+π−K^{+}π^{-} system in an S-wave configuration is taken into account. The tension seen between the previous LHCb results and the Standard Model predictions persists with the new data. The precise value of the significance of this tension depends on the choice of theory nuisance parameters.

Measurement of fs/fuf_s / f_u variation with proton-proton collision energy and BB-meson kinematics

The ratio of the Bs0\mathrm{B}^0_\mathrm{s} and B+\mathrm{B}^+ fragmentation fractions fsf_\mathrm{s} and fuf_u is studied with Bs0→J/ψϕB^0_\mathrm{s}\to\mathrm{J}/ψϕ and B+→J/ψK+B^+\to\mathrm{J}/ψK^+ decays using data collected by the LHCb experiment in proton-proton collisions at 7, 8 and 13 TeV\text{ TeV} center-of-mass energies. The analysis is performed in bins of B\mathrm{B}-meson momentum, longitudinal momentum, transverse momentum, pseudorapidity and rapidity. The fragmentation-fraction ratio fs/fuf_\mathrm{s} / f_u is observed to depend on the B\mathrm{B}-meson transverse momentum with a significance of 6.0 σ6.0\,σ. This dependency is driven by the 13 TeV\text{ TeV} sample (8.7 σ8.7\,σ) while the results for the other collision energies are not significant when considered separately. Furthermore the results show a 4.8 σ4.8\,σ evidence for an increase of fs/fuf_\mathrm{s} / f_u as a function of collision energy.

Measurement of CP violation in the Bs0→ϕϕB_s^0\rightarrowϕϕ decay and search for the B0→ϕϕB^0\rightarrow ϕϕ decay

A measurement of the time-dependent CP-violating asymmetry in Bs0→ϕϕB_s^0\rightarrowϕϕ decays is presented. Using a sample of proton-proton collision data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.05.0fb−1^{-1} collected by the $\mbox{LHCb}$ experiment at centre-of-mass energies s=7\sqrt{s} = 7 TeV in 2011, 8 TeV in 2012 and 13 TeV in 2015 and 2016, a signal yield of around 9000 Bs0→ϕϕB_s^0\rightarrowϕϕ decays is obtained. The CP-violating phase ϕsssˉsϕ_s^{s\bar{s}s} is measured to be −0.073±0.115-0.073 \pm 0.115(stat)±0.027\pm 0.027(syst) rad, under the assumption it is independent on the helicity of the ϕϕϕϕ decay. In addition, the CP-violating phases of the transverse polarisations under the assumption of CP conservation of the longitudinal phase are measured. The helicity-independent direct CP-violation parameter is also measured, and is found to be ∣λ∣=0.99±0.05|λ|=0.99 \pm 0.05 (stat)±0.01 \pm 0.01 (syst). In addition, TT-odd triple-product asymmetries are measured. The results obtained are consistent with the hypothesis of CP conservation in b→sˉssˉb\rightarrow\bar{s}s\bar{s} transitions. Finally, a limit on the branching fraction of the B0→ϕϕB^0\rightarrow ϕϕ decay is determined to be B(B0→ϕϕ)<2.7×10−8\mathcal{B}(B^0\rightarrow ϕϕ)<2.7\times 10^{-8} at 90% confidence level.

Measurement of psi(2S) meson production in pp collisions at sqrt(s)=7 TeV

The differential cross-section for the inclusive production of psi(2S) mesons in pp collisions at sqrt(s)=7 TeV has been measured with the LHCb detector. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 36 pb-1. The psi(2S) mesons are reconstructed in the decay channels psi(2S) -> mu+ mu- and psi(2S) -> J/psi pi+ pi-, with the J/psi meson decaying into two muons. Results are presented both for promptly produced psi(2S) mesons and for those originating from b-hadron decays. In the kinematic range pT(psi(2S)) <= 16 GeV/c and 2 < y(psi(2S)) <= 4.5 we measure 1.44 +- 0.01 +- 0.12+0.2-0.4 mub for prompt psi(2S) production and 0.25 +- 0.01 +- 0.02 mub for psi(2S) from b-hadron decays, where the last uncertainty on the prompt cross-section is due to the unknown psi(2S) polarization. Recent QCD calculations are found to be in good agreement with our measurements. Combining the present result with the LHCb J/psi measurements we determine the inclusive branching fraction B(b -> psi(2S) X) = (2.73 +- 0.06 +- 0.16 +- 0.24) x 10^(-3), where the last uncertainty is due to the B(b -> J/psi X), B(J/psi -> mu+ mu-) and B(psi(2S) -> e+ e-) branching fraction uncertainties. All above results are corrected by an erratum included as an appendix.

The cross-sections of ψ(2S)ψ(2S) meson production in proton-proton collisions at s=13 TeV\sqrt{s}=13~\mathrm{TeV} are measured with a data sample collected by the LHCb detector corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 275 pb−1275~p\mathrm{b}^{-1}. The production cross-sections for prompt ψ(2S)ψ(2S) mesons and those for ψ(2S)ψ(2S) mesons from bb-hadron decays (ψ(2S)−from−bψ{(2S)}\mathrm{-from-}b) are determined as functions of the transverse momentum, pTp_{\mathrm{T}}, and the rapidity, yy, of the ψ(2S)ψ(2S) meson in the kinematic range 2<pT<20 GeV/c2<p_{\mathrm{T}}<20~\mathrm{GeV}/c and 2.0<y<4.52.0<y<4.5. The production cross-sections integrated over this kinematic region are \begin{equation*} \begin{split} σ(\mbox{prompt }ψ(2S),13~\mathrm{TeV}) &= {1.430 \pm 0.005(\mathrm{stat}) \pm 0.099 (\mathrm{syst})μ\mathrm{b}},\\ σ(ψ(2S)\mathrm{-from-}b,13~\mathrm{TeV})&={0.426 \pm 0.002(\mathrm{stat}) \pm0.030 (\mathrm{syst})μ\mathrm{b}}. \end{split} \end{equation*} A new measurement of ψ(2S)ψ(2S) production cross-sections in pppp collisions at s=7 TeV\sqrt{s}=7~\mathrm{TeV} is also performed using data collected in 2011, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 614 pb−1614~{p\mathrm{b}^{-1}}.The integrated production cross-sections in the kinematic range 3.5<pT<14 GeV/c3.5<p_{\mathrm{T}}<14~\mathrm{GeV}/c and 2.0<y<4.52.0<y<4.5 are \begin{equation*} \begin{split} σ(\mbox{prompt }ψ(2S),7~\mathrm{TeV}) &={0.471 \pm0.001 (\mathrm{stat}) \pm 0.025 (\mathrm{syst})μ\mathrm{b}},\\ σ(ψ(2S)\mathrm{-from-}b,7~\mathrm{TeV}) &={0.126\pm0.001 (\mathrm{stat}) \pm0.008 (\mathrm{syst})μ\mathrm{b}}. \end{split} \end{equation*} All results show reasonable agreement with theoretical calculations.

Measurement of the ηc(1S)η_c(1S) production cross-section in pppp collisions at s=13\sqrt{s} = 13 TeV

Using a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 2.0 fb−12.0\,fb^{-1}, collected by the LHCb experiment, the production of the ηc(1S)η_c(1S) state in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of s=13 TeV\sqrt{s}=13 \text{ TeV} is studied in the rapidity range 2.0<y<4.5{2.0 < y < 4.5} and in the transverse momentum range 6.5<pT<14.0 GeV{6.5 < p_{T} < 14.0\text{ GeV}}. The cross-section for prompt production of ηc(1S)η_c(1S) mesons relative to that of the J/ψJ/ψ meson is measured using the ppˉ{p\bar{p}} decay mode and is found to be σηc(1S)/σJ/ψ=1.69±0.15±0.10±0.18{σ_{η_c(1S)}/σ_{J/ψ} = 1.69 \pm 0.15 \pm 0.10 \pm 0.18}. The quoted uncertainties are, in order, statistical, systematic and due to uncertainties on the branching fractions of the J/ψ→ppˉ{J/ψ\to p \bar{p}} and ηc→ppˉ{η_c\to p \bar{p}} decays. The prompt ηc(1S)η_c(1S) production cross-section is determined to be σηc(1S)=1.26±0.11±0.08±0.14 μb{σ_{η_c(1S)} = 1.26 \pm 0.11\pm 0.08 \pm 0.14 \,μb}, where the last uncertainty includes that on the J/ψ{J/ψ} meson cross-section. The ratio of the branching fractions of bb-hadron decays to the ηc(1S)η_c(1S) and J/ψ{J/ψ} states is measured to be Bb→ηcX/Bb→J/ψX=0.48±0.03±0.03±0.05{\mathcal{B}_{b\toη_c X}/\mathcal{B}_{b\to J/ψX} = 0.48 \pm 0.03 \pm 0.03 \pm 0.05}, where the last uncertainty is due to those on the branching fractions of the J/ψ→ppˉ{J/ψ\to p \bar{p}} and ηc→ppˉ{η_c\to p \bar{p}} decays. The difference between the J/ψ{J/ψ} and ηc(1S)η_c(1S) masses is also determined to be 113.0±0.7±0.1 MeV{113.0 \pm 0.7 \pm 0.1\text{ MeV}}, which is the most precise single measurement of this quantity to date.

Measurement of the Λb0→J/ψΛΛ^0_b\rightarrow J/ψΛ angular distribution and the Λb0Λ^0_b polarisation in pppp collisions

This paper presents an analysis of the Λb0→J/ψΛΛ^0_b\rightarrow J/ψΛ angular distribution and the transverse production polarisation of Λb0Λ^0_b baryons in proton-proton collisions at centre-of-mass energies of 7, 8 and 13 TeV. The measurements are performed using data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 4.9 fb−1^{-1}, collected with the LHCb experiment. The polarisation is determined in a fiducial region of Λb0Λ^0_b transverse momentum and pseudorapidity of 1<pT<201 < p_{T} < 20 GeV/c/c and 2<η<52 < η< 5, respectively. The data are consistent with Λb0Λ^0_b baryons being produced unpolarised in this region. The parity-violating asymmetry parameter of the Λ→pπ−Λ\rightarrow pπ^- decay is also determined from the data and its value is found to be consistent with a recent measurement by the BES\,III collaboration.

The branching fraction is determined to be BR(Bs0→KS0KS0B_s^0 \to K_S^0 K_S^0) = [8.3 ±\pm 1.6 (stat) ±\pm 0.9 (syst) ±\pm 0.8 (norm) ±\pm 0.3 (fs/fdf_s/f_d)] ×10−6\times 10^{-6} , where the first uncertainty is statistical, the second is systematic, and the third and fourth are due to uncertainties on the branching fraction of the normalization mode B0→ϕKS0B^0 \to ϕK_S^0 and the ratio of hadronization fractions fs/fdf_s/f_d. This is the most precise measurement of this branching fraction to date. Furthermore, a measurement of the branching fraction of the decay B0→KS0KS0B^0 \to K_S^0 K_S^0 is performed relative to that of the Bs0→KS0KS0B_s^0 \to K_S^0 K_S^0 channel, and is found to be BR(B0→KS0KS0)BR(Bs0→KS0KS0)\frac{BR(B^0 \to K_S^0 K_S^0)}{BR(B_s^0 \to K_S^0 K_S^0)} = [7.5 ±\pm 3.1 (stat) ±\pm 0.5 (syst) ±\pm 0.3 (fs/fdf_s/f_d)] ×10−2\times 10^{-2}.

Observation of a new baryon state in the Λb0π+π−Λ_b^0π^+π^- mass spectrum

A new baryon state is observed in the Λb0π+π−Λ_b^0π^+π^- mass spectrum with high significance using a data sample of pppp collisions, collected with the LHCb detector at centre-of-mass energies s=7,8\sqrt{s}=7, 8 and 13TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9fb−1^{-1}. The mass and natural width of the new state are measured to be \begin{eqnarray*} m & = & 6072.3 \pm 2.9 \pm 0.6 \pm 0.2 MeV\,, Γ& = & 72 \pm 11 \pm 2 MeV\,, \end{eqnarray*} where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic. The third uncertainty for the mass is due to imprecise knowledge of the Λb0Λ_b^0 baryon mass. The new state is consistent with the first radial excitation of the Λb0Λ_b^0 baryon, the Λb(2S)0Λ_b(2S)^0 resonance. Updated measurements of the masses and the upper limits on the natural widths of the previously observed Λb(5912)0Λ_b(5912)^0 and Λb(5920)0Λ_b(5920)^0 states are also reported.

Three Ξc0Ξ_c^0 states are observed with a large significance and their masses and natural widths are measured to be \begin{eqnarray*} m(Ξ_c(2923)^0)&=& 2923.04 \pm 0.25 \pm 0.20 \pm 0.14 ~\mathrm{MeV}, Γ(Ξ_c(2923)^0) &=& 7.1 \pm 0.8 \pm 1.8 ~\mathrm{MeV}, \end{eqnarray*} \begin{eqnarray*} m(Ξ_c(2939)^0) &=& 2938.55 \pm 0.21 \pm 0.17 \pm 0.14 ~\mathrm{ MeV}, Γ(Ξ_c(2939)^0) &=& 10.2 \pm 0.8 \pm 1.1 ~\mathrm{ MeV}, \end{eqnarray*} \begin{eqnarray*} m(Ξ_c(2965)^0) &=& 2964.88 \pm 0.26 \pm 0.14 \pm 0.14~\mathrm{ MeV}, Γ(Ξ_c(2965)^0) &=& 14.1 \pm 0.9 \pm 1.3~\mathrm{ MeV}, \end{eqnarray*} where the uncertainties are statistical, systematic, and due to the limited knowledge of the Λc+Λ_c^+ mass. The Ξc(2923)0Ξ_c(2923)^0 and Ξc(2939)0Ξ_c(2939)^0 baryons are new states. The Ξc(2965)0Ξ_c(2965)^0 state is in the vicinity of the known Ξc(2970)0Ξ_c(2970)^0 baryon; however, their masses and natural widths differ significantly.

Observation of new resonances in the Λb0π+π−Λ_{b}^0π^+π^- system

We report the observation of a new structure in the Λb0π+π−Λ_b^0 π^+π^- spectrum using the full LHCb data set of pppp collisions, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9 fb−19\,\mathrm{fb}^{-1}, collected at s=7\sqrt{s}=7, 8 and 13 TeV13\,\mathrm{TeV}. A study of the structure suggests its interpretation as a superposition of two almost degenerate narrow states. The masses and widths of these states are measured to be \begin{eqnarray*} m_{Λ_{b}\mathrm{(6146)}^0} &=&6146.17 \pm 0.33 \pm 0.22 \pm 0.16\,\mathrm{MeV} \,, m_{Λ_{b}\mathrm{(6152)}^0} &=&6152.51 \pm 0.26 \pm 0.22 \pm 0.16\,\mathrm{MeV} \,, Γ_{Λ_{b}\mathrm{(6146)}^0}&=&\phantom{615}2.9\phantom{0}\pm 1.3\phantom{0} \pm 0.3\phantom{0}\,\mathrm{MeV}\,, Γ_{Λ_{b}\mathrm{(6152)}^0} &=&\phantom{615}2.1\phantom{0}\pm 0.8\phantom{0} \pm 0.3\phantom{0}\,\mathrm{MeV}\,, \end{eqnarray*} with a mass splitting of Δm=6.34±0.32±0.02 MeVΔm = 6.34 \pm 0.32 \pm 0.02\,\mathrm{MeV}, where the first uncertainty is statistical, the second systematic and the third derives from the knowledge of the mass of the Λb0Λ_b^0 baryon. The measured masses and widths of these new excited states suggest their possible interpretation as a doublet of Λb(1D)0Λ_{b}\mathrm{(1D)}^0 states.

Observation of several sources of CPCP violation in B+→π+π+π−B^+ \to π^+ π^+ π^- decays

Observations are reported of different sources of CPCP violation from an amplitude analysis of B+→π+π+π−B^+ \to π^+ π^+ π^- decays, based on a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3  fb−13 \; {\rm fb}^{-1} of pppp collisions recorded with the LHCb detector. A large CPCP asymmetry is observed in the decay amplitude involving the tensor f2(1270)f_2(1270) resonance, and in addition significant CPCP violation is found in the π+π−π^+ π^- S-wave at low invariant mass. The presence of CPCP violation related to interference between the π+π−π^+ π^- S-wave and the P-wave B+→ρ(770)0π+B^+ \to ρ(770)^0 π^+ amplitude is also established; this causes large local asymmetries but cancels when integrated over the phase space of the decay. The results provide both qualitative and quantitative new insights into CPCP-violation effects in hadronic BB decays.

Searches are performed for both prompt-like and long-lived dark photons, A′A', produced in proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV. These searches look for A′ ⁣→ ⁣μ+μ−A'\!\to\!μ^+μ^- decays using a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.5/fb collected with the LHCb detector. Neither search finds evidence for a signal, and 90% confidence-level exclusion limits are placed on the γγ-A′A' kinetic-mixing strength. The prompt-like A′A' search explores the mass region from near the dimuon threshold up to 70 GeV, and places the most stringent constraints to date on dark photons with 214<m(A′)≲740214 < m(A') \lesssim 740 MeV and 10.6<m(A′)≲3010.6 < m(A') \lesssim 30 GeV. The Υ(nS)Υ(nS) mesons are reconstructed through their decays into two opposite-sign muons. The measurements comprise the differential production cross-sections of the Υ(1S)Υ(1S) and Υ(2S)Υ(2S) states, their forward-to-backward ratios and nuclear modification factors, performed as a function of the transverse momentum \pt and rapidity in the nucleon-nucleon centre-of-mass frame y∗y^* of the Υ(nS)Υ(nS) states, in the kinematic range pT<25p_{\rm{T}}<25 GeV/cc and 1.5<y∗<4.01.5<y^*<4.0 (−5.0<y∗<−2.5-5.0<y^*<-2.5) for ppPb (Pbpp) collisions. The measurements are compared to theoretical predictions and suppressions for quarkonium in ppPb collisions are observed.

The asymmetries in the effective decay widths of D0D^0 and D‾0\overline{D}^0 mesons are determined to be AΓ(K+K−)=(−4.3±3.6±0.5)×10−4A_Γ(K^+K^-) = ( -4.3 \pm 3.6 \pm 0.5 )\times 10^{-4} and AΓ(π+π−)=(2.2±7.0±0.8)×10−4A_Γ(π^+π^-) = ( 2.2 \pm 7.0 \pm 0.8)\times 10^{-4}, where the uncertainties are statistical and systematic, respectively. The results are consistent with CPCP symmetry and, when combined with previous LHCb results, yield AΓ(K+K−)=(−4.4±2.3±0.6)×10−4A_Γ(K^+K^-) = ( -4.4 \pm 2.3 \pm 0.6 )\times 10^{-4} and AΓ(π+π−)=(2.5±4.3±0.7)×10−4A_Γ(π^+π^-) = ( 2.5 \pm 4.3 \pm 0.7)\times 10^{-4}.

Updated measurement of time-dependent CPCP-violating observables in Bs0→J/ψK+K−B^{0}_{s}\to J/ψK^+ K^- decays

The decay-time-dependent CPCP asymmetry in Bs0→J/ψK+K−B^{0}_{s}\to J/ψK^{+} K^{-} decays is measured using proton-proton collision data, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.9 fb−11.9\,\mathrm{fb^{-1}}, collected with the LHCb detector at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV13\,\mathrm{TeV} in 2015 and 2016. Using a sample of approximately 117\,000 signal decays with an invariant K+K−K^{+} K^{-} mass in the vicinity of the ϕ(1020)ϕ(1020) resonance, the CPCP-violating phase ϕsϕ_s is measured, along with the difference in decay widths of the light and heavy mass eigenstates of the Bs0B^{0}_{s}-Bˉs0\bar{B}^{0}_{s} system, ΔΓsΔΓ_s. The difference of the average Bs0B^{0}_{s} and B0B^{0} meson decay widths, Γs−ΓdΓ_s-Γ_d, is determined using in addition a sample of B0→J/ψK+π−B^{0} \to J/ψK^{+} π^{-} decays. The values obtained are ϕs=−0.083±0.041±0.006 radϕ_s = -0.083\pm0.041\pm0.006\,\mathrm{rad}, ΔΓs=0.077±0.008±0.003 ps−1ΔΓ_s = 0.077 \pm 0.008 \pm 0.003\, \mathrm{ps^{-1}} and Γs−Γd=−0.0041±0.0024±0.0015 ps−1Γ_s-Γ_d = -0.0041 \pm 0.0024 \pm 0.0015\,\mathrm{ps^{-1}}, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic. These are the most precise single measurements of these quantities to date and are consistent with expectations based on the Standard Model and with a previous LHCb analysis of this decay using data recorded at centre-of-mass energies 7 and 8 TeV. Finally, the results are combined with recent results from Bs0→J/ψπ+π−B^{0}_{s}\to J/ψπ^{+} π^{-} decays obtained using the same dataset as this analysis, and with previous independent LHCb results.

A model-independent confirmation of the Z(4430)−Z(4430)^- state

The decay B0→ψ(2S)K+π−B^0\to ψ(2S) K^+π^- is analyzed using 3 fb−1\rm 3~fb^{-1} of pppp collision data collected with the LHCb detector. A model-independent description of the ψ(2S)πψ(2S) π mass spectrum is obtained, using as input the KπKπ mass spectrum and angular distribution derived directly from data, without requiring a theoretical description of resonance shapes or their interference. The hypothesis that the ψ(2S)πψ(2S)π mass spectrum can be described in terms of KπKπ reflections alone is rejected with more than 8σσ significance. This provides confirmation, in a model-independent way, of the need for an additional resonant component in the mass region of the Z(4430)−Z(4430)^- exotic state.

A new algorithm for identifying the flavour of Bs0B_s^0 mesons at LHCb

A new algorithm for the determination of the initial flavour of Bs0B_s^0 mesons is presented. The algorithm is based on two neural networks and exploits the bb hadron production mechanism at a hadron collider. The first network is trained to select charged kaons produced in association with the Bs0B_s^0 meson. The second network combines the kaon charges to assign the Bs0B_s^0 flavour and estimates the probability of a wrong assignment. The algorithm is calibrated using data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3 fb−1^{-1} collected by the LHCb experiment in proton-proton collisions at 7 and 8 TeV centre-of-mass energies. The calibration is performed in two ways: by resolving the Bs0B_s^0-Bˉs0\bar{B}_s^0 flavour oscillations in Bs0→Ds−π+B_s^0 \to D_s^- π^+ decays, and by analysing flavour-specific Bs2∗(5840)0→B+K−B_{s 2}^{*}(5840)^0 \to B^+ K^- decays. The tagging power measured in Bs0→Ds−π+B_s^0 \to D_s^- π^+ decays is found to be (1.80±0.19(stat)±0.18(syst))(1.80 \pm 0.19({\rm stat}) \pm 0.18({\rm syst}))\%, which is an improvement of about 50\% compared to a similar algorithm previously used in the LHCb experiment.

A precise measurement of the B0B^0 meson oscillation frequency

The oscillation frequency, ΔmdΔm_d, of B0B^0 mesons is measured using semileptonic decays with a D−D^- or D∗−D^{*-} meson in the final state, in a data sample of pppp collisions collected by the LHCb detector corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3.0$\mbox{fb}^{-1}$. A combination of the two decay modes gives Δmd=(505.0±2.1±1.0) ns−1Δm_d = (505.0 \pm 2.1 \pm 1.0) \rm \,ns^{-1}, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic. This is the most precise single measurement of this parameter. It is compatible with the current world average and has similar precision.

Amplitude analysis of B−→D+π−π−B^{-} \to D^{+} π^{-} π^{-} decays

The Dalitz plot analysis technique is used to study the resonant substructures of B−→D+π−π−B^{-} \to D^{+} π^{-} π^{-} decays in a data sample corresponding to 3.0 fb−1{\rm fb}^{-1} of pppp collision data recorded by the LHCb experiment during 2011 and 2012. A model-independent analysis of the angular moments demonstrates the presence of resonances with spins 1, 2 and 3 at high D+π−D^{+}π^{-} mass. The data are fitted with an amplitude model composed of a quasi-model-independent function to describe the D+π−D^{+}π^{-} S-wave together with virtual contributions from the D∗(2007)0D^{*}(2007)^{0} and B∗0B^{*0} states, and components corresponding to the D2∗(2460)0D^{*}_{2}(2460)^{0}, D1∗(2680)0D^{*}_{1}(2680)^{0}, D3∗(2760)0D^{*}_{3}(2760)^{0} and D2∗(3000)0D^{*}_{2}(3000)^{0} resonances. The masses and widths of these resonances are determined together with the branching fractions for their production in B−→D+π−π−B^{-} \to D^{+} π^{-} π^{-} decays. The D+π−D^{+}π^{-} S-wave has phase motion consistent with that expected due to the presence of the D0∗(2400)0D^{*}_{0}(2400)^{0} state. These results constitute the first observations of the D3∗(2760)0D^{*}_{3}(2760)^{0} and D2∗(3000)0D^{*}_{2}(3000)^{0} resonances.

Angular analysis of the B0→K∗0μ+μ−B^{0}\rightarrow K^{*0}μ^{+}μ^{-} decay using $3\,\mbox{fb}^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity

An angular analysis of the B0→K∗0(→K+π−)μ+μ−B^{0}\rightarrow K^{*0}(\rightarrow K^{+}π^{-})μ^{+}μ^{-} decay is presented. The dataset corresponds to an integrated luminosity of $3.0\,{\mbox{fb}^{-1}}$ of pppp collision data collected at the LHCb experiment. The complete angular information from the decay is used to determine C ⁣PC\!P-averaged observables and C ⁣PC\!P asymmetries, taking account of possible contamination from decays with the K+π−K^{+}π^{-} system in an S-wave configuration. The angular observables and their correlations are reported in bins of q2q^2, the invariant mass squared of the dimuon system. The observables are determined both from an unbinned maximum likelihood fit and by using the principal moments of the angular distribution. In addition, by fitting for q2q^2-dependent decay amplitudes in the region 1.1<q2<6.0 GeV2/c41.1<q^{2}<6.0\mathrm{\,Ge\kern -0.1em V}^{2}/c^{4}, the zero-crossing points of several angular observables are computed. A global fit is performed to the complete set of C ⁣PC\!P-averaged observables obtained from the maximum likelihood fit. This fit indicates differences with predictions based on the Standard Model at the level of 3.4 standard deviations. These differences could be explained by contributions from physics beyond the Standard Model, or by an unexpectedly large hadronic effect that is not accounted for in the Standard Model predictions.

Constraints on the unitarity triangle angle γγ from Dalitz plot analysis of B0→DK+π−B^0 \to D K^+ π^- decays

The first study is presented of CP violation with an amplitude analysis of the Dalitz plot of B0→DK+π−B^0 \to D K^+ π^- decays, with D→K+π−D \to K^+ π^-, K+K−K^+ K^- and π+π−π^+ π^-. The analysis is based on a data sample corresponding to 3.0 fb−13.0\,{\rm fb}^{-1} of pppp collisions collected with the LHCb detector. No significant CP violation effect is seen, and constraints are placed on the angle γγ of the unitarity triangle formed from elements of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa quark mixing matrix. Hadronic parameters associated with the B0→DK∗(892)0B^0 \to D K^*(892)^0 decay are determined for the first time. These measurements can be used to improve the sensitivity to γγ of existing and future studies of the B0→DK∗(892)0B^0 \to D K^*(892)^0 decay.

Measurements of the differential branching fraction and angular moments of the decay B0→K+π−μ+μ−B^0 \to K^+ π^- μ^+ μ^- in the K+π−K^+π^- invariant mass range 1330<m(K+π−)<1530 MeV/c21330<m(K^+ π^-)<1530~MeV/c^2 are presented. Proton-proton collision data are used, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3 fb−1fb^{-1} collected by the LHCb experiment. Differential branching fraction measurements are reported in five bins of the invariant mass squared of the dimuon system, q2q^2, between 0.1 and 8.0 GeV2/c4GeV^2/c^4. Evidence for exotic hadron contributions to Λb0→J/ψpπ−Λ_b^0 \to J/ψp π^- decays

A full amplitude analysis of Λb0→J/ψpπ−Λ_b^0 \to J/ψp π^- decays is performed with a data sample acquired with the LHCb detector from 7 and 8 TeV pppp collisions, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3 fb−1^{-1}. A significantly better description of the data is achieved when, in addition to the previously observed nucleon excitations N→pπ−N\to pπ^-, either the Pc(4380)+P_c(4380)^+ and Pc(4450)+→J/ψpP_c(4450)^+\to J/ψp states, previously observed in Λb0→J/ψpK−Λ_b^0 \to J/ψp K^- decays, or the Zc(4200)−→J/ψπ−Z_c(4200)^-\to J/ψπ^- state, previously reported in B0→J/ψK+π−B^0 \to J/ψK^+ π^- decays, or all three, are included in the amplitude models. The data support a model containing all three exotic states, with a significance of more than three standard deviations. Within uncertainties, the data are consistent with the Pc(4380)+P_c(4380)^+ and Pc(4450)+P_c(4450)^+ production rates expected from their previous observation taking account of Cabibbo suppression.

The constraints measured are rDK3π=(5.67±0.12)×10−2r_{D}^{K3π}=(5.67 \pm 0.12)\times10^{-2}, which is the most precise determination to date, and RDK3π⋅yK3π′=(0.3±1.8)×10−3R_{D}^{K3π} \cdot y^{'}_{K3π} = (0.3 \pm 1.8)\times 10^{-3}, which provides useful input for determinations of the CP-violating phase γγ in B±→DK±,D→K∓π±π∓π±B^\pm \to D K^\pm, D \to K^\mpπ^\pmπ^\mpπ^\pm decays. The electrons are required to have more than 20 20\,GeV of transverse momentum and to lie between 2.00 and 4.25 in pseudorapidity. The inclusive WW production cross-sections, where the WW decays to eνeν, are measured to be \begin{equation*} σ_{W^{+} \to e^{+}ν_{e}}=1124.4\pm 2.1\pm 21.5\pm 11.2\pm 13.0\,\mathrm{pb}, \end{equation*} \begin{equation*} σ_{W^{-} \to e^{-}\barν_{e}}=\,\,\,809.0\pm 1.9\pm 18.1\pm\,\,\,7.0\pm \phantom{0}9.4\,\mathrm{pb}, \end{equation*} where the first uncertainties are statistical, the second are systematic, the third are due to the knowledge of the LHC beam energy and the fourth are due to the luminosity determination. Differential cross-sections as a function of the electron pseudorapidity are measured. The W+/W−W^{+}/W^{-} cross-section ratio and production charge asymmetry are also reported. Results are compared with theoretical predictions at next-to-next-to-leading order in perturbative quantum chromodynamics. Finally, in a precise test of lepton universality, the ratio of WW boson branching fractions is determined to be \begin{equation*} \mathcal{B}(W \to eν)/\mathcal{B}(W \to μν)=1.020\pm 0.002\pm 0.019, \end{equation*} where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic.

Measurement of the CKM angle γγ from a combination of LHCb results

A combination of measurements sensitive to the CKM angle γγ from LHCb is performed. The inputs are from analyses of time-integrated B+→DK+B^{+}\rightarrow DK^+, B0→DK∗0B^{0} \rightarrow D K^{*0}, B0→DK+π−B^{0} \rightarrow D K^+ π^- and B+→DK+π+π−B^{+} \rightarrow D K^+π^+π^- tree-level decays. In addition, results from a time-dependent analysis of Bs0→Ds∓K±B_{s}^{0} \rightarrow D_{s}^{\mp}K^{\pm} decays are included. The combination yields γ=(72.2−7.3+6.8)∘γ= (72.2^{+6.8}_{-7.3})^\circ, where the uncertainty includes systematic effects. The 95.5% confidence level interval is determined to be γ∈[55.9,85.2]∘γ\in [55.9,85.2]^\circ. A second combination is investigated, also including measurements from B+→Dπ+B^{+} \rightarrow D π^+ and B+→Dπ+π−π+B^{+} \rightarrow D π^+π^-π^+ decays, which yields compatible results.

Measurement of the CKM angle γγ using B0→DK∗0B^0 \rightarrow D K^{*0} with D→KS0π+π−D \rightarrow K^0_S π^+ π^- decays

A model-dependent amplitude analysis of the decay B0→D(KS0π+π−)K∗0B^0\rightarrow D(K^0_Sπ^+π^-) K^{*0} is performed using proton-proton collision data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3.0fb−1^{-1}, recorded at s=7\sqrt{s}=7 and 8TeV8 TeV by the LHCb experiment. The CP violation observables x±x_{\pm} and y±y_{\pm}, sensitive to the CKM angle γγ, are measured to be \begin{eqnarray*} x_- &=& -0.15 \pm 0.14 \pm 0.03 \pm 0.01, y_- &=& 0.25 \pm 0.15 \pm 0.06 \pm 0.01, x_+ &=& 0.05 \pm 0.24 \pm 0.04 \pm 0.01, y_+ &=& -0.65^{+0.24}_{-0.23} \pm 0.08 \pm 0.01, \end{eqnarray*} where the first uncertainties are statistical, the second systematic and the third arise from the uncertainty on the D→KS0π+π−D\rightarrow K^0_S π^+π^- amplitude model. These are the most precise measurements of these observables. They correspond to γ=(80−22+21)∘γ=(80^{+21}_{-22})^{\circ} and rB0=0.39±0.13r_{B^0}=0.39\pm0.13, where rB0r_{B^0} is the magnitude of the ratio of the suppressed and favoured B0→DK+π−B^0\rightarrow D K^+ π^- decay amplitudes, in a KπKπ mass region of ±50MeV\pm50 MeV around the K∗(892)0K^*(892)^0 mass and for an absolute value of the cosine of the K∗0K^{*0} decay angle larger than 0.40.4.

Measurement of the difference of time-integrated CP asymmetries in D0→K−K+D^0 \rightarrow K^{-} K^{+} and D0→π−π+D^0 \rightarrow π^{-} π^{+} decays

A search for CP violation in D0→K−K+D^0 \rightarrow K^{-} K^{+} and D0→π−π+D^0 \rightarrow π^{-} π^{+} decays is performed using pppp collision data, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3 fb−13~fb^{-1}, collected using the LHCb detector at centre-of-mass energies of 7 and 8 8~TeV. The flavour of the charm meson is inferred from the charge of the pion in D∗+→D0π+D^{*+}\rightarrow D^0π^+ and D∗−→D0ˉπ−D^{*-}\rightarrow \bar{D^0}π^{-} decays. The difference between the CP asymmetries in D0→K−K+D^0 \rightarrow K^{-} K^{+} and D0→π−π+D^0 \rightarrow π^{-} π^{+} decays, ΔACP≡ACP(K−K+)−ACP(π−π+)ΔA_{CP} \equiv A_{CP}(K^{-} K^{+}) - A_{CP}(π^{-} π^{+}), is measured to be (−0.10±0.08(stat)±0.03(syst))%\left( -0.10 \pm 0.08(stat) \pm 0.03(syst) \right) \%. This is the most precise measurement of a time-integrated CP asymmetry in the charm sector from a single experiment.

Measurement of the forward Z boson production cross-section in pp collisions at s=13\sqrt{s} = 13 TeV

A measurement of the production cross-section of Z bosons in pp collisions at s=13\sqrt{s} = 13 TeV is presented using dimuon and dielectron final states in LHCb data. The cross-section is measured for leptons with pseudorapidities in the range 2.0<η<4.52.0 < η< 4.5, transverse momenta pT>20p_\text{T} > 20 GeV and dilepton invariant mass in the range 60<m(ℓℓ)<12060<m(\ell\ell)<120 GeV. The integrated cross-section from averaging the two final states is \begin{equation*}σ_{\text{Z}}^{\ell\ell} = 194.3 \pm 0.9 \pm 3.3 \pm 7.6\text{ pb,}\end{equation*} where the first uncertainty is statistical, the second is due to systematic effects, and the third is due to the luminosity determination. In addition, differential cross-sections are measured as functions of the Z boson rapidity, transverse momentum and the angular variable ϕη∗ϕ^*_η.

Measurement of the mass and lifetime of the Ωb−Ω_b^- baryon

A proton-proton collision data sample, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3 fb−1^{-1} collected by LHCb at s=7\sqrt{s}=7 and 8 TeV, is used to reconstruct 63±963\pm9 Ωb−→Ωc0π−Ω_b^-\toΩ_c^0π^-, Ωc0→pK−K−π+Ω_c^0\to pK^-K^-π^+ decays. Using the Ξb−→Ξc0π−Ξ_b^-\toΞ_c^0π^-, Ξc0→pK−K−π+Ξ_c^0\to pK^-K^-π^+ decay mode for calibration, the lifetime ratio and absolute lifetime of the Ωb−Ω_b^- baryon are measured to be \begin{align*} \frac{τ_{Ω_b^-}}{τ_{Ξ_b^-}} &= 1.11\pm0.16\pm0.03, \\ τ_{Ω_b^-} &= 1.78\pm0.26\pm0.05\pm0.06~{\rm ps}, \end{align*} where the uncertainties are statistical, systematic and from the calibration mode (for τΩb−τ_{Ω_b^-} only). A measurement is also made of the mass difference, mΩb−−mΞb−m_{Ω_b^-}-m_{Ξ_b^-}, and the corresponding Ωb−Ω_b^- mass, which yields \begin{align*} m_{Ω_b^-}-m_{Ξ_b^-} &= 247.4\pm3.2\pm0.5~{\rm MeV}/c^2, \\ m_{Ω_b^-} &= 6045.1\pm3.2\pm 0.5\pm0.6~{\rm MeV}/c^2. \end{align*} These results are consistent with previous measurements.

Measurement of the properties of the Ξb∗0Ξ_b^{*0} baryon

We perform a search for near-threshold Ξb0Ξ_b^0 resonances decaying to Ξb−π+Ξ_b^- π^+ in a sample of proton-proton collision data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3 fb−1^{-1} collected by the LHCb experiment. We observe one resonant state, with the following properties: \begin{eqnarray*} m(Ξ_b^{*0}) - m(Ξ_b^-) - m(π^+) &=& 15.727 \pm 0.068 \, (\mathrm{stat}) \pm 0.023 \, (\mathrm{syst}) \, \mathrm{MeV}/c^2, Γ(Ξ_b^{*0}) &=& 0.90 \pm 0.16 \, (\mathrm{stat}) \pm 0.08 \, (\mathrm{syst}) \, \mathrm{MeV} . \end{eqnarray*} This confirms the previous observation by the CMS collaboration. The state is consistent with the JP=3/2+J^P=3/2^+ Ξb∗0Ξ_b^{*0} resonance expected in the quark model. This is the most precise determination of the mass and the first measurement of the natural width of this state. We have also measured the ratio \begin{align*} \frac{σ(pp \to Ξ_b^{*0} X){\cal{B}}(Ξ_b^{*0} \to Ξ_b^- π^+)}{σ(pp \to Ξ_b^- X)} = 0.28 \pm 0.03 \, (\mathrm{stat}) \pm 0.01 \, (\mathrm{syst}) . \end{align*}

Measurements of long-range near-side angular correlations in sNN=5\sqrt{s_{\text{NN}}}=5TeV proton-lead collisions in the forward region

Two-particle angular correlations are studied in proton-lead collisions at a nucleon-nucleon centre-of-mass energy of sNN=5\sqrt{s_{\text{NN}}}=5TeV, collected with the LHCb detector at the LHC. The analysis is based on data recorded in two beam configurations, in which either the direction of the proton or that of the lead ion is analysed. The correlations are measured in the laboratory system as a function of relative pseudorapidity, ΔηΔη, and relative azimuthal angle, ΔϕΔϕ, for events in different classes of event activity and for different bins of particle transverse momentum. In high-activity events a long-range correlation on the near side, Δϕ≈0Δϕ\approx 0, is observed in the pseudorapidity range 2.0<η<4.92.0<η<4.9. This measurement of long-range correlations on the near side in proton-lead collisions extends previous observations into the forward region up to η=4.9η=4.9. The correlation increases with growing event activity and is found to be more pronounced in the direction of the lead beam. However, the correlation in the direction of the lead and proton beams are found to be compatible when comparing events with similar absolute activity in the direction analysed.

Model-independent evidence for J/ψpJ/ψp contributions to Λb0→J/ψpK−Λ_b^0\to J/ψp K^- decays

The data sample of Λb0→J/ψpK−Λ_b^0\to J/ψp K^- decays acquired with the LHCb detector from 7 and 8~TeV pppp collisions, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3 fb−1^{-1}, is inspected for the presence of J/ψpJ/ψp or J/ψK−J/ψK^- contributions with minimal assumptions about K−pK^- p contributions. It is demonstrated at more than 9 standard deviations that Λb0→J/ψpK−Λ_b^0\to J/ψp K^- decays cannot be described with K−pK^- p contributions alone, and that J/ψpJ/ψp contributions play a dominant role in this incompatibility. These model-independent results support the previously obtained model-dependent evidence for Pc+→J/ψpP_c^+\to J/ψp charmonium-pentaquark states in the same data sample.

A binned Dalitz plot analysis of the decays B0→DK∗0B^0 \to D K^{\ast 0}, with D→KS0π+π−D \to K_{S}^{0} π^{+} π^{-} and KS0K+K−K_{S}^{0} K^{+} K^{-}, is performed to measure the observables x±x_\pm and y±y_\pm, which are related to the CKM angle γγ and the hadronic parameters of the decays. The DD decay strong phase variation over the Dalitz plot is taken from measurements performed at the CLEO-c experiment, making the analysis independent of the DD decay model. With a sample of proton-proton collision data, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3.0 fb−13.0\,\rm{fb}^{-1}, collected by the LHCb experiment, the values of the CPCP violation parameters are found to be x+=0.05±0.35±0.02x_+ = 0.05 \pm 0.35 \pm 0.02, x−=−0.31±0.20±0.04x_-=-0.31\pm 0.20 \pm 0.04, y+=−0.81±0.28±0.06y_+=-0.81\pm 0.28\pm 0.06 and y−=0.31±0.21±0.05y_-=0.31\pm 0.21 \pm 0.05, where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second systematic. These observables correspond to values γγ = (71±20)∘(71 \pm 20)^\circ, rB0=0.56±0.17r_{B^0} = 0.56\pm 0.17 and δB0=(204 −20+21)∘δ_{B^0} = (204\,^{+21}_{-20})^\circ. Associated production of bottomonia and open charm hadrons in pppp collisions at s=7\sqrt{s}=7 and 88TeV is observed using data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3fb−1fb^{-1} accumulated with the LHCb detector. The observation of five combinations, Υ(1S)D0Υ(1S)D^0, Υ(2S)D0Υ(2S)D^0, Υ(1S)D+Υ(1S)D^+, Υ(2S)D+Υ(2S)D^+ and Υ(1S)Ds+Υ(1S)D^+_{s}, is reported. For the D∗+KS0D^{*+} K^0_{\rm S} final state, the decays D∗+→D0π+D^{*+} \to D^0 π^+ with D0→K−π+D^0 \to K^- π^+ and D0→K−π+π+π−D^0 \to K^- π^+ π^+ π^- are used. For D∗0K+D^{*0} K^+, the decay D∗0→D0π0D^{*0} \to D^0 π^0 with D0→K−π+D^0 \to K^- π^+ is used. A prominent Ds1(2536)+D_{s1}(2536)^+ signal is observed in both D∗+KS0D^{*+} K^0_{\rm S} and D∗0K+D^{*0} K^+ final states. The resonances Ds1∗(2700)+D^*_{s1}(2700)^+ and Ds3∗(2860)+D^*_{s3}(2860)^+ are also observed, yielding information on their properties, including spin-parity assignments. The decay Ds2∗(2573)+→D∗+KS0D^*_{s2}(2573)^+ \to D^{*+} K^0_{\rm S} is observed for the first time, at a significance of 6.9 σσ, and its branching fraction relative to the Ds2∗(2573)+→D+KS0D^*_{s2}(2573)^+ \to D^+ K^0_{\rm S} decay mode is measured.

Study of the production of Λb0Λ_b^0 and B‾0\overline{B}^0 hadrons in pppp collisions and first measurement of the Λb0→J/ψpK−Λ_b^0\rightarrow J/ψpK^- branching fraction

The product of the Λb0Λ_b^0 (B‾0\overline{B}^0) differential production cross-section and the branching fraction of the decay Λb0→J/ψpK−Λ_b^0\rightarrow J/ψpK^- (B‾0→J/ψK‾∗(892)0\overline{B}^0\rightarrow J/ψ\overline{K}^*(892)^0) is measured as a function of the beauty hadron transverse momentum, pTp_{\rm T}, and rapidity, yy. The kinematic region of the measurements is pT<20 GeV/cp_{\rm T}<20~{\rm GeV}/c and 2.0<y<4.52.0<y<4.5. The measurements use a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3 fb−13~{\rm fb}^{-1} collected by the LHCb detector in pppp collisions at centre-of-mass energies s=7 TeV\sqrt{s}=7~{\rm TeV} in 2011 and s=8 TeV\sqrt{s}=8~{\rm TeV} in 2012. Based on previous LHCb results of the fragmentation fraction ratio, fΛB0/fdf_{Λ_B^0}/f_d, the branching fraction of the decay Λb0→J/ψpK−Λ_b^0\rightarrow J/ψpK^- is measured to be \begin{equation*} \mathcal{B}(Λ_b^0\rightarrow J/ψpK^-)= (3.17\pm0.04\pm0.07\pm0.34^{+0.45}_{-0.28})\times10^{-4}, \end{equation*} where the first uncertainty is statistical, the second is systematic, the third is due to the uncertainty on the branching fraction of the decay B‾0→J/ψK‾∗(892)0\overline{B}^0\rightarrow J/ψ\overline{K}^*(892)^0, and the fourth is due to the knowledge of fΛb0/fdf_{Λ_b^0}/f_d. The sum of the asymmetries in the production and decay between Λb0Λ_b^0 and Λ‾b0\overlineΛ_b^0 is also measured as a function of pTp_{\rm T} and yy. The previously published branching fraction of Λb0→J/ψpπ−Λ_b^0\rightarrow J/ψpπ^-, relative to that of Λb0→J/ψpK−Λ_b^0\rightarrow J/ψpK^-, is updated. The branching fractions of Λb0→Pc+(→J/ψp)K−Λ_b^0\rightarrow P_c^+(\rightarrow J/ψp)K^- are determined.

BB flavour tagging using charm decays at the LHCb experiment

An algorithm is described for tagging the flavour content at production of neutral BB mesons in the LHCb experiment. The algorithm exploits the correlation of the flavour of a BB meson with the charge of a reconstructed secondary charm hadron from the decay of the other bb hadron produced in the proton-proton collision. Charm hadron candidates are identified in a number of fully or partially reconstructed Cabibbo-favoured decay modes. The algorithm is calibrated on the self-tagged decay modes B+→J/ψ K+B^+ \to J/ψ\, K^+ and B0→J/ψ K∗0B^0 \to J/ψ\, K^{*0} using 3.0 fb−13.0\mathrm{\,fb}^{-1} of data collected by the LHCb experiment at pppp centre-of-mass energies of 7 TeV7\mathrm{\,TeV} and 8 TeV8\mathrm{\,TeV}. Its tagging power on these samples of B→J/ψ XB \to J/ψ\, X decays is (0.30±0.01±0.01)%(0.30 \pm 0.01 \pm 0.01) \%.

The Dalitz plot distribution of B0→Dˉ0K+π−B^0 \rightarrow \bar{D}^0 K^+ π^- decays is studied using a data sample corresponding to 3.0fb−13.0\rm{fb}^{-1} of pppp collision data recorded by the LHCb experiment during 2011 and 2012. The data are described by an amplitude model that contains contributions from intermediate K∗(892)0K^*(892)^0, K∗(1410)0K^*(1410)^0, K2∗(1430)0K^*_2(1430)^0 and D2∗(2460)−D^*_2(2460)^- resonances. The model also contains components to describe broad structures, including the K0∗(1430)0K^*_0(1430)^0 and D0∗(2400)−D^*_0(2400)^- resonances, in the KπKπ S-wave and the DπDπ S- and P-waves. The masses and widths of the D0∗(2400)−D^*_0(2400)^- and D2∗(2460)−D^*_2(2460)^- resonances are measured, as are the complex amplitudes and fit fractions for all components included in the amplitude model. Angular analysis and differential branching fraction of the decay Bs0→ϕμ+μ−B^0_s\toϕμ^+μ^-

An angular analysis and a measurement of the differential branching fraction of the decay Bs0→ϕμ+μ−B^0_s\toϕμ^+μ^- are presented, using data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3.0 fb−13.0\, {\rm fb^{-1}} of pppp collisions recorded by the LHCb experiment at s=7\sqrt{s} = 7 and 8 TeV8\, {\rm TeV}. Measurements are reported as a function of q2q^{2}, the square of the dimuon invariant mass and results of the angular analysis are found to be consistent with the Standard Model. In the range 1<q2<6 GeV2/c41<q^2<6\, {\rm GeV}^{2}/c^{4}, where precise theoretical calculations are available, the differential branching fraction is found to be more than 3 σ3\,σ below the Standard Model predictions.

Dalitz plot analysis of B0→D‾0π+π−B^0 \to \overline{D}^0 π^+π^- decays

The resonant substructures of B0→D‾0π+π−B^0 \to \overline{D}^0 π^+π^- decays are studied with the Dalitz plot technique. In this study a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3.0 fb−1^{-1} of pppp collisions collected by the LHCb detector is used. The branching fraction of the B0→D‾0π+π−B^0 \to \overline{D}^0 π^+π^- decay in the region m(D‾0π±)>2.1m(\overline{D}^0π^{\pm})>2.1 GeV/c2/c^2 is measured to be (8.46±0.14±0.29±0.40)×10−4(8.46 \pm 0.14 \pm 0.29 \pm 0.40) \times 10^{-4}, where the first uncertainty is statistical, the second is systematic and the last arises from the normalisation channel B0→D∗(2010)−π+B^0 \to D^*(2010)^-π^+. The π+π−π^+π^- S-wave components are modelled with the Isobar and K-matrix formalisms. Results of the Dalitz plot analyses using both models are presented. A resonant structure at m(D‾0π−)≈2.8m(\overline{D}^0π^-) \approx 2.8 GeV/c2/c^{2} is confirmed and its spin-parity is determined for the first time as JP=3−J^P = 3^-. The branching fraction, mass and width of this structure are determined together with those of the D0∗(2400)−D^*_0(2400)^- and D2∗(2460)−D^*_2(2460)^- resonances. The branching fractions of other B0→D‾0h0B^0 \to \overline{D}^0 h^0 decay components with h0→π+π−h^0 \to π^+π^- are also reported. Many of these branching fraction measurements are the most precise to date. The first observation of the decays B0→D‾0f0(500)B^0 \to \overline{D}^0 f_0(500), B0→D‾0f0(980)B^0 \to \overline{D}^0 f_0(980), B0→D‾0ρ(1450)B^0 \to \overline{D}^0 ρ(1450), B0→D3∗(2760)−π+B^0 \to D_3^*(2760)^- π^+ and the first evidence of B0→D‾0f0(2020)B^0 \to \overline{D}^0 f_0(2020) are presented.

Determination of the quark coupling strength ∣Vub∣|V_{ub}| using baryonic decays

In the Standard Model of particle physics, the strength of the couplings of the bb quark to the uu and cc quarks, ∣Vub∣|V_{ub}| and ∣Vcb∣|V_{cb}|, are governed by the coupling of the quarks to the Higgs boson. Using data from the LHCb experiment at the Large Hadron Collider, the probability for the Λb0Λ^0_b baryon to decay into the pμ−ν‾μp μ^- \overlineν_μ final state relative to the Λc+μ−ν‾μΛ^+_c μ^- \overlineν_μ final state is measured. Combined with theoretical calculations of the strong interaction and a previously measured value of ∣Vcb∣|V_{cb}|, the first ∣Vub∣|V_{ub}| measurement to use a baryonic decay is performed. This measurement is consistent with previous determinations of ∣Vub∣|V_{ub}| using BB meson decays to specific final states and confirms the existing incompatibility with those using an inclusive sample of final states.

Evidence for the strangeness-changing weak decay Ξb−→Λb0π−Ξ_b^-\toΛ_b^0π^-

Using a pppp collision data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3.0~fb−1^{-1}, collected by the LHCb detector, we present the first search for the strangeness-changing weak decay Ξb−→Λb0π−Ξ_b^-\toΛ_b^0π^-. No bb hadron decay of this type has been seen before. A signal for this decay, corresponding to a significance of 3.2 standard deviations, is reported. The relative rate is measured to be fΞb−fΛb0B(Ξb−→Λb0π−)=(5.7±1.8−0.9+0.8)×10−4{f_{Ξ_b^-}\over{f_{Λ_b^0}}}{\cal{B}}(Ξ_b^-\toΛ_b^0π^-) = (5.7\pm1.8^{+0.8}_{-0.9})\times10^{-4}, where fΞb−f_{Ξ_b^-} and fΛb0f_{Λ_b^0} are the b→Ξb−b\toΞ_b^- and b→Λb0b\toΛ_b^0 fragmentation fractions, and B(Ξb−→Λb0π−){\cal{B}}(Ξ_b^-\toΛ_b^0π^-) is the branching fraction. Assuming fΞb−/fΛb0f_{Ξ_b^-}/f_{Λ_b^0} is bounded between 0.1 and 0.3, the branching fraction B(Ξb−→Λb0π−){\cal{B}}(Ξ_b^-\toΛ_b^0π^-) would lie in the range from (0.57±0.21)%(0.57\pm0.21)\% to (0.19±0.07)%(0.19\pm0.07)\%.

First measurement of the differential branching fraction and C ⁣PC\!P asymmetry of the B±→π±μ+μ−B^\pm\toπ^\pmμ^+μ^- decay

The differential branching fraction with respect to the dimuon invariant mass squared, and the C ⁣PC\!P asymmetry of the B±→π±μ+μ−B^\pm\toπ^\pmμ^+μ^- decay are measured for the first time. The CKM matrix elements ∣Vtd∣|V_{td}| and ∣Vts∣|V_{ts}|, and the ratio ∣Vtd/Vts∣|V_{td}/V_{ts}| are determined. The analysis is performed using proton-proton collision data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3.0 fb−1^{-1}, collected by the LHCb experiment at centre-of-mass energies of 7 and 8 TeV. The total branching fraction and C ⁣PC\!P asymmetry of B±→π±μ+μ−B^\pm\toπ^\pmμ^+μ^- decays are measured to be \begin{eqnarray} \mathcal{B}(B^\pm\toπ^\pmμ^+μ^-) &=& (1.83 \pm 0.24 \pm 0.05) \times 10^{-8}\,\,\,\mathrm{and} \nonumber\\ \mathcal{A}_{C\!P}(B^\pm\toπ^\pmμ^+μ^-) &=& -0.11 \pm 0.12 \pm 0.01\,, \nonumber \end{eqnarray} where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second are systematic. These are the most precise measurements of these observables to date, and they are compatible with the predictions of the Standard Model.

Using a recent measurement of BR(Bs0→Ds∗−π+)BR(B^0_s \to D_s^{*-} π^{+}) the absolute branching fraction of Bs0→Ds∗∓K±B^0_s \to D_s^{*\mp} K^{\pm} is measured as ( 16.3 ±\pm 1.2 (stat) −0.5+0.7^{+0.7}_{-0.5} (syst) ±\pm 4.8 (norm) ) ×\times 10−5^{-5}, where the third uncertainty is due to the uncertainty on the branching fraction of the normalisation channel.

First observation of top quark production in the forward region

Top quark production in the forward region in proton-proton collisions is observed for the first time. The W ⁣+ ⁣bW\!+\!b final state with W→μνW\toμν is reconstructed using muons with a transverse momentum, pTp_{\rm T}, larger than 25 GeV in the pseudorapidity range 2.0<η<4.52.0<η<4.5. The bb jets are required to have 50<pT<10050 < p_{\rm T} < 100 GeV and 2.2<η<4.22.2 < η< 4.2, while the transverse component of the sum of the muon and bb-jet momenta must satisfy pT>20p_{\rm T} > 20 GeV. The results are based on data corresponding to integrated luminosities of 1.0 and 2.02.0 fb−1^{-1} collected at center-of-mass energies of 7 and 8 TeV by LHCb. The inclusive top quark production cross-sections in the fiducial region are σ(top)[7TeV]=239±53(stat)±33(syst)±24(theory) fbσ({\rm top})[7\rm{TeV}] = 239\pm53({\rm stat})\pm33({\rm syst})\pm24({\rm theory})\,{\rm fb} and σ(top)[8TeV]=289±43(stat)±40(syst)±29(theory) fbσ({\rm top})[8\rm{TeV}] = 289\pm43({\rm stat})\pm40({\rm syst})\pm29({\rm theory})\,{\rm fb}. These results, along with the observed differential yields and charge asymmetries, are in agreement with next-to-leading order Standard Model predictions.

LHCb Detector Performance

The LHCb detector is a forward spectrometer at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN. The experiment is designed for precision measurements of CP violation and rare decays of beauty and charm hadrons. In this paper the performance of the various LHCb sub-detectors and the trigger system are described, using data taken from 2010 to 2012. It is shown that the design criteria of the experiment have been met. The excellent performance of the detector has allowed the LHCb collaboration to publish a wide range of physics results, demonstrating LHCb's unique role, both as a heavy flavour experiment and as a general purpose detector in the forward region.

The acceptance is defined by the requirements 2.0<η<4.52.0<η<4.5 and pT>20p_{\rm T}>20GeV for the pseudorapidities and transverse momenta of the leptons. Their invariant mass is required to lie in the range 60--120GeV. The cross-section is determined to be σ(pp→Z→e+e−)=93.81±0.41(stat)±1.48(syst)±1.14(lumi)  pb , σ({\rm pp\to Z\to e^+e^-})=93.81\pm0.41({\rm stat})\pm1.48({\rm syst})\pm1.14({\rm lumi})\;{\rm pb}\,, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second reflects all systematic effects apart from that arising from the luminosity, which is given as the third uncertainty. Differential cross-sections are presented as functions of the Z-boson rapidity and of the angular variable ϕ∗ϕ^*, which is related to the Z-boson transverse momentum.

Measurement of indirect CPCP asymmetries in D0→K−K+D^0\rightarrow K^-K^+ and D0→π−π+D^0\rightarrow π^-π^+ decays using semileptonic BB decays

Time-dependent CPCP asymmetries in the decay rates of the singly Cabibbo-suppressed decays D0→K−K+D^0\rightarrow K^-K^+ and D0→π−π+D^0\rightarrow π^-π^+ are measured in pppp collision data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3.0 fb−1^{-1} collected by the LHCb experiment. The D0D^0 mesons are produced in semileptonic bb-hadron decays, where the charge of the accompanying muon is used to determine the initial state as D0D^0 or Dˉ0\bar{D}^0. The asymmetries in effective lifetimes between D0D^0 and Dˉ0\bar{D}^0 decays, which are sensitive to indirect CPCP violation, are determined to be \begin{align*} A_Γ(K^-K^+) = (-0.134 \pm 0.077 \; {}^{+0.026}_{-0.034})\% \, A_Γ(π^-π^+) = (-0.092\pm 0.145 \; {}^{+0.025}_{-0.033})\% \, \end{align*} where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second systematic. This result is in agreement with previous measurements and with the hypothesis of no indirect CPCP violation in D0D^0 decays.

Measurement of the Bs0→ϕϕB_s^0 \to ϕϕ branching fraction and search for the decay B0→ϕϕB^0 \to ϕϕ

Using a dataset corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3.0 fb−1^{-1} collected in pppp collisions at centre-of-mass energies of 7 and 8 TeV, the Bs0→ϕϕB_s^0 \to ϕϕ branching fraction is measured to be B(Bs0→ϕϕ)=(1.84±0.05(stat)±0.07(syst)±0.11(fs/fd)±0.12(norm))×10−5, \mathcal{B}(B_s^0 \to ϕϕ) = ( 1.84 \pm 0.05 (\text{stat}) \pm 0.07 (\text{syst}) \pm 0.11 (f_s/f_d) \pm 0.12 (\text{norm}) ) \times 10^{-5}, where fs/fdf_s/f_d represents the ratio of the Bs0B_s^0 to B0B^0 production cross-sections, and the B0→ϕK∗(892)0B^0 \to ϕK^*(892)^0 decay mode is used for normalization. This is the most precise measurement of this branching fraction to date, representing a factor five reduction in the statistical uncertainty compared with the previous best measurement. A search for the decay B0→ϕϕB^0 \to ϕϕ is also made. No signal is observed, and an upper limit on the branching fraction is set as B(B0→ϕϕ)<2.8×10−8 \mathcal{B}(B^0 \to ϕϕ) < 2.8 \times 10^{-8} at 90% confidence level. This is a factor of seven improvement compared to the previous best limit.

Measurement of the branching fraction ratio B(Bc+→ψ(2S)π+)/B(Bc+→J/ψπ+)\mathcal{B}(B_c^+ \rightarrow ψ(2S)π^+)/\mathcal{B}(B_c^+ \rightarrow J/ψπ^+)

Using pppp collision data collected by LHCb at center-of-mass energies s\sqrt{s} = 7 TeV and 8 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3 fb−1^{-1}, the ratio of the branching fraction of the Bc+→ψ(2S)π+B_c^+ \rightarrow ψ(2S)π^+ decay relative to that of the Bc+→J/ψπ+B_c^+ \rightarrow J/ψπ^+ decay is measured to be 0.268 ±\pm 0.032 (stat) ±\pm 0.007 (syst) ±\pm 0.006 (BF). The first uncertainty is statistical, the second is systematic, and the third is due to the uncertainties on the branching fractions of the J/ψ→μ+μ−J/ψ\rightarrow μ^+μ^- and ψ(2S)→μ+μ−ψ(2S) \rightarrow μ^+μ^- decays. This measurement is consistent with the previous LHCb result, and the statistical uncertainty is halved.

Measurement of the exclusive ΥΥ production cross-section in pppp collisions at s=\sqrt{s}=7 TeV and 8 TeV

A study is presented of central exclusive production of Υ(nS)Υ(nS) states, where the Υ(nS)Υ(nS) resonances decay to the μ+μ−μ^+μ^- final state, using pppp collision data recorded by the LHCb experiment. The cross-section is measured in the rapidity range 2<y(Υ)<4.52<y(Υ)<4.5 where the muons are reconstructed in the pseudorapidity range 2<η(μ±)<4.52<η(μ^\pm)<4.5. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 2.9 fb−1^{-1} and was collected at centre-of-mass energies of 77 TeV and 88 TeV. The measured Υ(1S)Υ(1S) and Υ(2S)Υ(2S) production cross-sections are \begin{eqnarray} σ(pp \to pΥ(1S)p) &=& 9.0 \pm 2.1 \pm 1.7\textrm{ pb and}\nonumber\\ σ(pp \to pΥ(2S)p) &=& 1.3 \pm 0.8 \pm 0.3\textrm{ pb},\nonumber \end{eqnarray} where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second are systematic. The Υ(1S)Υ(1S) cross-section is also measured as a function of rapidity and is found to be in good agreement with Standard Model predictions. An upper limit is set at 3.4 pb at the 95\% confidence level for the exclusive Υ(3S)Υ(3S) production cross-section, including possible contamination from χb(3P)→Υ(3S)γχ_b(3P)\toΥ(3S)γ decays.

Measurement of the forward ZZ boson production cross-section in pppp collisions at s\sqrt{s} = 7 TeV

A measurement of the production cross-section for ZZ bosons that decay to muons is presented. The data were recorded by the LHCb detector during pppp collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV, and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 1.0 fb−1^{-1}. The cross-section is measured for muons in the pseudorapidity range 2.0<η<4.52.0 < η< 4.5 with transverse momenta pT>20p_{T} > 20 GeV/c. The dimuon mass is restricted to 60<Mμ+μ−<12060 < M_{μ^{+}μ^{-}} < 120 GeV/c2^{2}. The measured cross-section is σZ→μ+μ−=(76.0±0.3±0.5±1.0±1.3) pbσ_{Z\rightarrowμ^{+}μ^{-}} = (76.0 \pm 0.3 \pm 0.5 \pm 1.0 \pm 1.3) \, \text{pb} where the uncertainties are due to the sample size, systematic effects, the beam energy and the luminosity. This result is in good agreement with theoretical predictions at next-to-next-to-leading order in perturbative quantum chromodynamics. The cross-section is also measured differentially as a function of kinematic variables of the ZZ boson. Ratios of the production cross-sections of electroweak bosons are presented using updated LHCb measurements of WW boson production. A precise test of the Standard Model is provided by the measurement of the ratio σW+→μ+νμ+σW−→μ−νˉμσZ→μ+μ−=20.63±0.09±0.12±0.05,\frac{σ_{W^{+}\rightarrowμ^{+}ν_μ} + σ_{W^{-}\rightarrowμ^{-}\barν_μ}}{σ_{Z\rightarrowμ^{+}μ^{-}}} = 20.63\pm0.09\pm0.12\pm0.05, where the uncertainty due to luminosity cancels.

Measurement of the forward-backward asymmetry in Z/γ∗→μ+μ−Z/γ^{\ast} \rightarrow μ^{+}μ^{-} decays and determination of the effective weak mixing angle

The forward-backward charge asymmetry for the process qqˉ→Z/γ∗→μ+μ−q\bar{q} \rightarrow Z/γ^{\ast} \rightarrow μ^{+}μ^{-} is measured as a function of the invariant mass of the dimuon system. Measurements are performed using proton proton collision data collected with the LHCb detector at s=7\sqrt{s} = 7 and 8\tev, corresponding to integrated luminosities of 11fb−1^{-1} and 22fb−1^{-1} respectively. Within the Standard Model the results constrain the effective electroweak mixing angle to be sin2θWeff=0.23142±0.00073±0.00052±0.00056sin^{2}θ_{W}^{eff} = 0.23142 \pm 0.00073 \pm 0.00052 \pm 0.00056 where the first uncertainty is statistical, the second systematic and the third theoretical. This result is in agreement with the current world average, and is one of the most precise determinations at hadron colliders to date.

Measurement of the semileptonic CPCP asymmetry in B0−B‾0B^0-\overline{B}{}^0 mixing

The semileptonic CPCP asymmetry in B0−B‾0B^0-\overline{B}{}^0 mixing, aslda_{\rm sl}^d, is measured in proton-proton collision data, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3.0 fb−1^{-1}, recorded by the LHCb experiment. Semileptonic B0B^0 decays are reconstructed in the inclusive final states D−μ+D^-μ^+ and D∗−μ+D^{*-}μ^+, where the D−D^- meson decays into the K+π−π−K^+π^-π^- final state, and the D∗−D^{*-} meson into the D‾0(→K+π−)π−\overline{D}{}^0(\rightarrow K^+π^-)π^- final state. The asymmetry between the numbers of D(∗)−μ+D^{(*)-}μ^+ and D(∗)+μ−D^{(*)+}μ^- decays is measured as a function of the decay time of the B0B^0 mesons. The CPCP asymmetry is measured to be asld=(−0.02±0.19±0.30)%a_{\rm sl}^d = (-0.02 \pm 0.19 \pm 0.30)\%, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic. This is the most precise measurement of aslda_{\rm sl}^d to date and is consistent with the prediction from the Standard Model.

The Z bosons are reconstructed in the Z/γ∗ ⁣→μ+μ−{\text{Z}/γ^*}\!\rightarrow{μ^{+}μ^{-}} final state from muons with a transverse momentum larger than 20 GeV20{\mathrm{\,Ge\kern -0.1em V}}, while two transverse momentum thresholds are considered for jets (10 GeV10{\mathrm{\,Ge\kern -0.1em V}} and 20 GeV20{\mathrm{\,Ge\kern -0.1em V}}). NectarCAM : a camera for the medium size telescopes of the Cherenkov Telescope Array

NectarCAM is a camera proposed for the medium-sized telescopes of the Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) covering the central energy range of ~100 GeV to ~30 TeV. It has a modular design and is based on the NECTAr chip, at the heart of which is a GHz sampling Switched Capacitor Array and a 12-bit Analog to Digital converter. The camera will be equipped with 265 7-photomultiplier modules, covering a field of view of 8 degrees. Each module includes the photomultiplier bases, high voltage supply, pre-amplifier, trigger, readout and Ethernet transceiver. The recorded events last between a few nanoseconds and tens of nanoseconds. The camera trigger will be flexible so as to minimize the read-out dead-time of the NECTAr chips. NectarCAM is designed to sustain a data rate of more than 4 kHz with less than 5\% dead time. The camera concept, the design and tests of the various subcomponents and results of thermal and electrical prototypes are presented. The design includes the mechanical structure, cooling of the electronics, read-out, clock distribution, slow control, data-acquisition, triggering, monitoring and services.

Observation of J/ψpJ/ψp resonances consistent with pentaquark states in Λb0→J/ψK−p{Λ_b^0\to J/ψK^-p} decays

Observations of exotic structures in the J/ψpJ/ψp channel, that we refer to as pentaquark-charmonium states, in Λb0→J/ψK−pΛ_b^0\to J/ψK^- p decays are presented. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 3/fb acquired with the LHCb detector from 7 and 8 TeV pp collisions. An amplitude analysis is performed on the three-body final-state that reproduces the two-body mass and angular distributions. To obtain a satisfactory fit of the structures seen in the J/ψpJ/ψp mass spectrum, it is necessary to include two Breit-Wigner amplitudes that each describe a resonant state. The significance of each of these resonances is more than 9 standard deviations. One has a mass of 4380±8±294380\pm 8\pm 29 MeV and a width of 205±18±86205\pm 18\pm 86 MeV, while the second is narrower, with a mass of 4449.8±1.7±2.54449.8\pm 1.7\pm 2.5 MeV and a width of 39±5±1939\pm 5\pm 19 MeV. The preferred JPJ^P assignments are of opposite parity, with one state having spin 3/2 and the other 5/2.

More than 600 ${\B^0 \to (π^+π^-)(π^+π^-)}$ signal decays are selected and used to perform an amplitude analysis from which the B0→ρ0ρ0{B^0 \to ρ^0 ρ^0} decay is observed for the first time with 7.1 standard deviations significance. Observation of the rare Bs0→μ+μ−B^0_s\toμ^+μ^- decay from the combined analysis of CMS and LHCb data

A joint measurement is presented of the branching fractions Bs0→μ+μ−B^0_s\toμ^+μ^- and B0→μ+μ−B^0\toμ^+μ^- in proton-proton collisions at the LHC by the CMS and LHCb experiments. The data samples were collected in 2011 at a centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV, and in 2012 at 8 TeV. The combined analysis produces the first observation of the Bs0→μ+μ−B^0_s\toμ^+μ^- decay, with a statistical significance exceeding six standard deviations, and the best measurement of its branching fraction so far. Furthermore, evidence for the B0→μ+μ−B^0\toμ^+μ^- decay is obtained with a statistical significance of three standard deviations. The branching fraction measurements are statistically compatible with SM predictions and impose stringent constraints on several theories beyond the SM.

Observation of two new Ξb−Ξ_b^- baryon resonances

Two structures are observed close to the kinematic threshold in the Ξb0π−Ξ_b^0 π^- mass spectrum in a sample of proton-proton collision data, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3.0 fb−1^{-1} recorded by the LHCb experiment. In the quark model, two baryonic resonances with quark content bdsbds are expected in this mass region: the spin-parity JP=12+J^P = \frac{1}{2}^+ and JP=32+J^P=\frac{3}{2}^+ states, denoted Ξb′−Ξ_b^{\prime -} and Ξb∗−Ξ_b^{*-}. Interpreting the structures as these resonances, we measure the mass differences and the width of the heavier state to be m(Ξb′−)−m(Ξb0)−m(π−)=3.653±0.018±0.006m(Ξ_b^{\prime -}) - m(Ξ_b^0) - m(π^{-}) = 3.653 \pm 0.018 \pm 0.006 MeV/c2/c^2, m(Ξb∗−)−m(Ξb0)−m(π−)=23.96±0.12±0.06m(Ξ_b^{*-}) - m(Ξ_b^0) - m(π^{-}) = 23.96 \pm 0.12 \pm 0.06 MeV/c2/c^2, Γ(Ξb∗−)=1.65±0.31±0.10Γ(Ξ_b^{*-}) = 1.65 \pm 0.31 \pm 0.10 MeV, where the first and second uncertainties are statistical and systematic, respectively. The width of the lighter state is consistent with zero, and we place an upper limit of Γ(Ξb′−)<0.08Γ(Ξ_b^{\prime -}) < 0.08 MeV at 95% confidence level. Relative production rates of these states are also reported.

Precise measurements of the properties of the B_1(5721)^(0,+) and B_2*(5747)^(0,+) states and observation of B^(+,0) pi^(-,+) mass structures

Invariant mass distributions of B+pi- and B0pi+ combinations are investigated in order to study excited B mesons. The analysis is based on a data sample corresponding to 3.0 fb-1 of pp collision data, recorded by the LHCb detector at centre-of-mass energies of 7 and 8 TeV. Precise measurements of the masses and widths of the B_1(5721)^(0,+) and B_2*(5747)^(0,+) states are reported. The search is performed using pppp-collision data corresponding to 3.0 fb−1^{-1} collected with the LHCb detector. No significant signal is observed in the accessible mass range 214≤m(χ)≤4350214 \leq m(χ) \leq 4350 MeV, and upper limits are placed on the branching fraction product B(B0 ⁣→K∗(892)0χ)×B(χ ⁣→μ+μ−)\mathcal{B}(B^0\!\to K^*(892)^0χ)\times\mathcal{B}(χ\!\toμ^+μ^-) as a function of the mass and lifetime of the χχ boson. These limits are of the order of 10−910^{-9} for χχ lifetimes less than 100 ps over most of the m(χ)m(χ) range, and place the most stringent constraints to date on many theories that predict the existence of additional low-mass bosons.

A search is presented for long-lived particles with a mass between 25 and 50 GeV/c2/c^2 and a lifetime between 1 and 200 ps in a sample of proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of s=7\sqrt{s}=7 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 0.62 fb−1^{-1}, collected by the LHCb detector. The particles are assumed to be pair-produced by the decay of a Standard Model-like Higgs boson. The experimental signature of the long-lived particle is a displaced vertex with two associated jets. No excess above the background is observed and limits are set on the production cross-section as a function of the long-lived particle mass and lifetime.

Search for the Λb→Λη′Λ_b \rightarrow Λη^\prime and Λb→ΛηΛ_b \rightarrow Λη decays with the LHCb detector

A search is performed for the as yet unobserved baryonic Λb→Λη′Λ_b \rightarrow Λη^\prime and Λb→ΛηΛ_b \rightarrow Λη decays with 3fb−1fb^{-1} of proton-proton collision data recorded by the LHCb experiment. The B0→KS0η′B^0 \rightarrow K_S^0 η^\prime decay is used as a normalisation channel. No significant signal is observed for the Λb→Λη′Λ_b \rightarrow Λη^\prime decay. An upper limit is found on the branching fraction of B(Λb→Λη′)<3.1×10−6\mathcal{B}(Λ_b \rightarrow Λη^\prime)<3.1\times10^{-6}} at 90\% confidence level. Evidence is seen for the presence of the Λb→ΛηΛ_b \rightarrow Λη decay at the level of 3σ3σ significance, with a branching fraction B(Λb→Λη)=(9.3−5.3+7.3)×10−6\mathcal{B}(Λ_b \rightarrow Λη)=(9.3^{+7.3}_{-5.3})\times10^{-6}}.

Search for the rare decays B0→J/ψγB^{0}\to J/ψγ and Bs0→J/ψγB^{0}_{s} \to J/ψγ

A search for the rare decay of a B0B^{0} or Bs0B^{0}_{s} meson into the final state J/ψγJ/ψγ is performed, using data collected by the LHCb experiment in pppp collisions at s=7\sqrt{s}=7 and 88 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3 fb−1^{-1}. Study of B−→DK−π+π−B^{-}\to DK^-π^+π^- and B−→Dπ−π+π−B^-\to Dπ^-π^+π^- decays and determination of the CKM angle γγ

We report a study of the suppressed B−→DK−π+π−B^-\to DK^-π^+π^- and favored B−→Dπ−π+π−B^-\to Dπ^-π^+π^- decays, where the neutral DD meson is detected through its decays to the K∓π±K^{\mp}π^{\pm} and CP-even K+K−K^+K^- and π+π−π^+π^- final states. The measurement is carried out using a proton-proton collision data sample collected by the LHCb experiment, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3.0~fb−1^{-1}. We observe the first significant signals in the CP-even final states of the DD meson for both the suppressed B−→DK−π+π−B^-\to DK^-π^+π^- and favored B−→Dπ−π+π−B^-\to Dπ^-π^+π^- modes, as well as in the doubly Cabibbo-suppressed D→K+π−D\to K^+π^- final state of the B−→Dπ−π+π−B^-\to Dπ^-π^+π^- decay. Evidence for the ADS suppressed decay B−→DK−π+π−B^{-}\to DK^-π^+π^-, with D→K+π−D\to K^+π^-, is also presented. From the observed yields in the B−→DK−π+π−B^-\to DK^-π^+π^-, B−→Dπ−π+π−B^-\to Dπ^-π^+π^- and their charge conjugate decay modes, we measure the value of the weak phase to be γ=(74−19+20)oγ=(74^{+20}_{-19})^{\rm o}. This is one of the most precise single-measurement determinations of γγ to date.

Study of WW boson production in association with beauty and charm

The associated production of a WW boson with a jet originating from either a light parton or heavy-flavor quark is studied in the forward region using proton-proton collisions. The analysis uses data corresponding to integrated luminosities of 1.0 and 2.0 fb−12.0\,{\rm fb}^{-1} collected with the LHCb detector at center-of-mass energies of 7 and 8 TeV, respectively. The WW bosons are reconstructed using the W→μνW\toμν decay and muons with a transverse momentum, pTp_{\rm T}, larger than 20 GeV in the pseudorapidity range 2.0<η<4.52.0<η<4.5. The partons are reconstructed as jets with pT>20p_{\rm T} > 20 GeV and 2.2<η<4.22.2 < η< 4.2. The sum of the muon and jet momenta must satisfy pT>20p_{\rm T} > 20 GeV. The fraction of W+W+jet events that originate from beauty and charm quarks is measured, along with the charge asymmetries of the W ⁣+ ⁣bW\!+\!b and W ⁣+ ⁣cW\!+\!c production cross-sections. The ratio of the W+W+jet to Z+Z+jet production cross-sections is also measured using the Z→μμZ\toμμ decay. All results are in agreement with Standard Model predictions.

Study of the rare Bs0B_s^0 and B0B^0 decays into the π+π−μ+μ−π^+π^-μ^+μ^- final state

A search for the rare decays Bs0→π+π−μ+μ−B_s^0 \to π^+π^-μ^+μ^- and B0→π+π−μ+μ−B^0 \to π^+π^-μ^+μ^- is performed in a data set corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3.0 fb−1^{-1} collected by the LHCb detector in proton-proton collisions at centre-of-mass energies of 7 and 8 TeV. Measurement of the CP-violating phase ββ in B0→J/ψπ+π−B^0\rightarrow J/ψπ^+π^- decays and limits on penguin effects

Time-dependent CP violation is measured in the B0→J/ψπ+π−B^0\rightarrow J/ψπ^+π^- channel for each π+π−π^+π^- resonant final state using data collected with an integrated luminosity of 3.0 fb−1^{-1} in pppp collisions using the LHCb detector. The final state with the largest rate, J/ψρ0(770)J/ψρ^0(770), is used to measure the CP-violating angle 2βeff2β^{\rm eff} to be (41.7±9.6−6.3+2.8)∘(41.7\pm 9.6_{-6.3}^{+2.8})^{\circ}. This result can be used to limit the size of penguin amplitude contributions to CP violation measurements in, for example, Bs0→J/ψϕB_s^0\rightarrow J/ψϕ decays. Assuming approximate SU(3) flavour symmetry and neglecting higher order diagrams, the shift in the CP-violating phase ϕsϕ_s is limited to be within the interval [−1.05∘-1.05^\circ, +1.18∘1.18^\circ] at 95% confidence level. Changes to the limit due to SU(3) symmetry breaking effects are also discussed.

The difference in total widths between the Bc+B_c^+ and B+B^+ mesons is measured using 3.0fb−1^{-1} of data collected by the LHCb experiment in 7 and 8 TeV centre-of-mass energy proton-proton collisions at the LHC. Through the study of the time evolution of Bc+→J/ψπ+B_c^+ \rightarrow J/ψπ^+ and B+→J/ψK+B^+\rightarrow J/ψK^+ decays, the width difference is measured to be ΔΓ≡ΓBc+−ΓB+=4.46±0.14±0.07mm−1c, ΔΓ\equiv Γ_{B_c^+} - Γ_{B^+} = 4.46 \pm 0.14 \pm 0.07mm^{-1}c, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic. Precision luminosity measurements at LHCb

Measuring cross-sections at the LHC requires the luminosity to be determined accurately at each centre-of-mass energy s\sqrt{s}. In this paper results are reported from the luminosity calibrations carried out at the LHC interaction point 8 with the LHCb detector for s\sqrt{s} = 2.76, 7 and 8 TeV (proton-proton collisions) and for sNN\sqrt{s_{NN}} = 5 TeV (proton-lead collisions). Both the "van der Meer scan" and "beam-gas imaging" luminosity calibration methods were employed. It is observed that the beam density profile cannot always be described by a function that is factorizable in the two transverse coordinates. The introduction of a two-dimensional description of the beams improves significantly the consistency of the results. For proton-proton interactions at s\sqrt{s} = 8 TeV a relative precision of the luminosity calibration of 1.47% is obtained using van der Meer scans and 1.43% using beam-gas imaging, resulting in a combined precision of 1.12%. Applying the calibration to the full data set determines the luminosity with a precision of 1.16%. This represents the most precise luminosity measurement achieved so far at a bunched-beam hadron collider.

Precision measurement of CPCP violation in Bs0→J/ψK+K−B_s^0 \to J/ψK^+K^- decays

The time-dependent CPCP asymmetry in Bs0→J/ψK+K−B_s^0 \to J/ψK^+K^- decays is measured using pppp collision data, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3.03.0fb−1^{-1}, collected with the LHCb detector at centre-of-mass energies of 77 and 88TeV. In a sample of 96 000 Bs0→J/ψK+K−B_s^0 \to J/ψK^+K^- decays, the CPCP-violating phase ϕsϕ_s is measured, as well as the decay widths ΓLΓ_{L} and ΓHΓ_{H} of the light and heavy mass eigenstates of the Bs0−Bˉs0B_s^0-\bar{B}_s^0 system. The values obtained are ϕs=−0.058±0.049±0.006ϕ_s = -0.058 \pm 0.049 \pm 0.006 rad, Γs≡(ΓL+ΓH)/2=0.6603±0.0027±0.0015Γ_s \equiv (Γ_{L}+Γ_{H})/2 = 0.6603 \pm 0.0027 \pm 0.0015ps−1^{-1}, andΔΓs≡ΓL−ΓH=0.0805±0.0091±0.0032ΔΓ_s \equiv Γ_{L} - Γ_{H} = 0.0805 \pm 0.0091 \pm 0.0032ps−1^{-1}, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic. These are the most precise single measurements of those quantities to date. A combined analysis with Bs0→J/ψπ+π−B_s^{0} \to J/ψπ^+π^- decays gives ϕs=−0.010±0.039ϕ_s = -0.010 \pm 0.039 rad. For the first time the phase ϕsϕ_s is measured independently for each polarisation state of the K+K−K^+K^- system and shows no evidence for polarisation dependence.

Precision measurement of the mass and lifetime of the Xi_b^- baryon

We report on measurements of the mass and lifetime of the Xi_b^- baryon using about 1800 Xi_b^- decays reconstructed in a proton-proton collision data set corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3.0 fb^{-1} collected by the LHCb experiment. The decays are reconstructed in the Xi_b^- --> Xi_c^0 pi^-, Xi_c^0 --> pK-K-pi+ channel and the mass and lifetime are measured using the Lambda_b^0 --> Lambda_c^+ pi- mode as a reference. We measure M(Xi_b^-) - M(Lambda_b^0) = 178.36 +- 0.46 +- 0.16 MeV/c^2 and tau(Xi_b^-)/tau(Lambda_b^0) = 1.089 +- 0.026 +- 0.011, where the uncertainties are statistical and systematic, respectively. These results lead to a factor of two better precision on the Xi_b^- mass and lifetime compared to previous best measurements, and are consistent with theoretical expectations.

Implications of LHCb measurements and future prospects

During 2011 the LHCb experiment at CERN collected 1.0 fb-1 of sqrt{s} = 7 TeV pp collisions. Due to the large heavy quark production cross-sections, these data provide unprecedented samples of heavy flavoured hadrons. The first results from LHCb have made a significant impact on the flavour physics landscape and have definitively proved the concept of a dedicated experiment in the forward region at a hadron collider. This document discusses the implications of these first measurements on classes of extensions to the Standard Model, bearing in mind the interplay with the results of searches for on-shell production of new particles at ATLAS and CMS. The physics potential of an upgrade to the LHCb detector, which would allow an order of magnitude more data to be collected, is emphasised.

Analysis of the resonant components in Bs->J/ψπ+π-

Determination of the sign of the decay width difference in the B_s system

The interference between the K+K- S-wave and P-wave amplitudes in B_s -> J/psi K+K- decays with the K+K- pairs in the region around the phi(1020) resonance is used to determine the variation of the difference of the strong phase between these amplitudes as a function of K+K- invariant mass. Combined with the results from our CP asymmetry measurements in B_s -> J/psi phi decays, we conclude that the B_s mass eigenstate that is almost CP =+1 is lighter and decays faster than the mass eigenstate that is almost CP =-1. This determines the sign of the decay width difference DeltaGamma_s == Gamma_L -Gamma_H to be positive. Our result also resolves the ambiguity in the past measurements of the CP violating phase phi_s to be close to zero rather than pi. These conclusions are in agreement with the Standard Model expectations.

Differential branching fraction and angular analysis of the decay B0→K∗0μ+μ−\boldsymbol{B^{0} \rightarrow K^{*0} μ^+ μ^-}

Evidence for CP violation in time-integrated D0 -> h-h+ decay rates

A search for time-integrated CP violation in D0 -> h-h+ (h=K, pi) decays is presented using 0.62 fb^-1 of data collected by LHCb in 2011. The flavor of the charm meson is determined by the charge of the slow pion in the D*+ -> D0 pi+ and D*- -> D0bar pi- decay chains. The difference in CP asymmetry between D0 -> K-K+ and D0 -> pi-pi+, Delta ACP = ACP(K-K+) - ACP(pi-pi+), is measured to be [-0.82 \pm 0.21(stat.) \pm 0.11(syst.)]%. This differs from the hypothesis of CP conservation by 3.5 standard deviations.

Inclusive WW and ZZ production in the forward region at s=7\sqrt{s} = 7 TeV

Measurements of inclusive WW and ZZ boson production cross-sections in pppp collisions at s=7\sqrt{s}=7 TeV using final states containing muons are presented. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 37 pb−1^{-1} collected with the LHCb detector. The WW and ZZ bosons are reconstructed from muons with a transverse momentum above 20 GeV/c/c and pseudorapidity between 2.0 and 4.5, and, in the case of the ZZ cross-section, a dimuon invariant mass between 60 and 120 GeV/c2/c^2. The cross-sections are measured to be {831±9±27±29831\pm9\pm27\pm 29 pb} for W+W^+, {656±8±19±23656\pm8\pm19\pm 23 pb} for W−W^- and {76.7±1.7±3.3±2.776.7\pm1.7\pm3.3\pm2.7 pb} for ZZ, where the first uncertainty is statistical, the second is systematic and the third is due to the luminosity. Differential cross-sections, WW and ZZ cross-section ratios and the lepton charge asymmetry are also measured in the same kinematic region. The ratios are determined to be σW+→μ+ν/σW−→μ−νˉ=σ_{W^+\rightarrowμ^+ν} / σ_{W^-\rightarrowμ^-\barν}= {1.27±0.02±0.011.27\pm0.02\pm0.01}, and σW+→μ+ν+σW−→μ−νˉ)/σZ→μμ=σ_{W^+\rightarrowμ^+ν} + σ_{W^-\rightarrowμ^-\barν})/σ_{Z\rightarrowμμ}= {19.4±0.5±0.919.4\pm0.5\pm0.9}. The results are in general agreement with theoretical predictions, performed at next-to-next-to-leading order in QCD using recently calculated parton distribution functions.

Measurement of b hadron production fractions in 7 TeV pp collisions

Measurements of bb hadron production ratios in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV with an integrated luminosity of 3 pb−1^{-1} are presented. We study the ratios of strange BB meson to light BB meson production fs/(fu+fd)f_s/(f_u+f_d) and Λb0Λ_b^0 baryon to light BB meson production fΛb/(fu+fd)f_{Λ_b}/(f_u+f_d) as a function of the charmed hadron-muon pair transverse momentum pTp_T and the bb hadron pseudorapidity ηη, for pTp_T between 0 and 14 GeV and ηη between 2 and 5. We find that fs/(fu+fd)f_s/(f_u+f_d) is consistent with being independent of pTp_{\rm T} and ηη, and we determine fs/(fu+fd)f_s/(f_u+f_d) = 0.134±\pm 0.004 −0.010+0.011^{+0.011}_{-0.010}, where the first error is statistical and the second systematic. Measurement of the effective Bs0→K+K−B_s^0 \rightarrow K^+ K^- lifetime

A precise determination of the effective Bs0→K+K−B_s^0 \rightarrow K^+ K^- lifetime can be used to constrain contributions from physics beyond the Standard Model in the Bs0B_s^0 meson system. Conventional approaches select BB meson decay products that are significantly displaced from the BB meson production vertex. As a consequence, BB mesons with low decay times are suppressed, introducing a bias to the decay time spectrum which must be corrected. This analysis uses a technique that explicitly avoids a lifetime bias by using a neural network based trigger and event selection. Using 1.0 fb−1^{-1} of data recorded by the LHCb experiment, the effective Bs0→K+K−B_s^0 \rightarrow K^+ K^- lifetime is measured as 1.455±0.046  (stat.)±0.006  (syst.) ps.1.455 \pm 0.046 \; \mathrm{(stat.)} \pm 0.006 \; \mathrm{(syst.)} \, \mathrm{ps}.

The results are in excellent agreement with next-to-leading order non-relativistic expectations and show a significant discrepancy compared with the colour singlet model prediction at leading order, especially in the low pTJ/ψp_{\mathrm T}^{J/ψ} region.

Measurement of Upsilon production in pp collisions at \sqrt{s} = 7 TeV

The production of Upsilon(1S), Upsilon(2S) and Upsilon(3S) mesons in proton-proton collisions at the centre-of-mass energy of sqrt(s)=7 TeV is studied with the LHCb detector. The analysis is based on a data sample of 25 pb-1 collected at the Large Hadron Collider. The Upsilon mesons are reconstructed in the decay mode Upsilon -> mu+ mu- and the signal yields are extracted from a fit to the mu+ mu- invariant mass distributions. The differential production cross-sections times dimuon branching fractions are measured as a function of the Upsilon transverse momentum pT and rapidity y, over the range pT < 15 GeV/c and 2.0 < y < 4.5. The cross-sections times branching fractions, integrated over these kinematic ranges, are measured to be sigma(pp -> Upsilon(1S) X) x B(Upsilon(1S)->mu+ mu-) = 2.29 {\pm} 0.01 {\pm} 0.10 -0.37 +0.19 nb, sigma(pp -> Upsilon(2S) X) x B(Upsilon(2S)->mu+ mu-) = 0.562 {\pm} 0.007 {\pm} 0.023 -0.092 +0.048 nb, sigma(pp -> Upsilon(3S) X) x B(Upsilon(3S)->mu+ mu-) = 0.283 {\pm} 0.005 {\pm} 0.012 -0.048 +0.025 nb, where the first uncertainty is statistical, the second systematic and the third is due to the unknown polarisation of the three Upsilon states.

Measurements of the branching fractions and CP asymmetries of B+ to J/psi pi+ and B+ to psi(2S) pi+ decays

A study of B+ to J/psi pi+ and B+ to psi(2S) pi+ decays is performed with data corresponding to 0.37 fb-1 of proton-proton collisions at sqrt(s)=7 TeV. Their branching fractions are found to be B(B+ to J/psi pi+) = (3.88 +- 0.11 +- 0.15) x 10^{-5} and B(B+ to psi(2S) pi+) = (2.52 +- 0.26 +- 0.15) x 10^{-5}, where the first uncertainty is related to the statistical size of the sample and the second quantifies systematic effects. The measured CP asymmetries in these modes are ACP(J/psi pi) = 0.005 +- 0.027 +- 0.011 and ACP(psi(2S) pi) = 0.048 +- 0.090 +- 0.011 with no evidence of direct CP violation seen.

Measurements of the branching fractions of the decays Bs0→Ds∓K±B^{0}_{s} \to D^{\mp}_{s} K^{\pm} and Bs0→Ds−π+B^{0}_{s} \to D^{-}_{s} π^{+}

The decay mode $\B^{0}_{s} \to D^{\mp}_{s} K^{\pm} $ allows for one of the theoretically cleanest measurements of the CKM angle γγ through the study of time-dependent $\ensuremath{CP}\xspace$ violation. This paper reports a measurement of its branching fraction relative to the Cabibbo-favoured mode $\B^{0}_{s} \to D^{-}_{s} π^{+}$ based on a data sample of 0.37 fb−1^{-1} proton-proton collisions at s=7\sqrt{s} = 7 TeV collected in 2011 with the LHCb detector. In addition, the ratio of $\ensuremath{\mathrm{B}}\xspace$ meson production fractions $\ensuremath{f_s/f_d}$, determined from semileptonic decays, together with the known branching fraction of the control channel B0→D−π+B^{0} \to D^{-} π^{+}, is used to perform an absolute measurement of the branching fractions: $B (\B^0_s \to D^-_s π^+) \;= (2.95 \pm 0.05 \pm 0.17^{\,+\,0.18}_{\,-\,0.22}) \times 10^{-3}$, $B (\B^0_s \to D^\mp_s K^\pm) = (1.90 \pm 0.12 \pm 0.13^{\,+\,0.12}_{\,-\,0.14}) \times 10^{-4}\,$, where the first uncertainty is statistical, the second the experimental systematic uncertainty, and the third the uncertainty due to fs/fdf_s/f_d.

Observation of Bs -> J/ψf'2(1525) in J/ψK+K- final states

The decay Bs -> J/ψK+ K- is investigated using 0.16/fb of data collected with the LHCb detector using 7 TeV pp collisions. Although the J/ψϕ channel is well known, final states at higher K+K- masses have not previously been studied. In the K+K- mass spectrum we observe a significant signal in the f'2(1525) region as well as a non-resonant component. After subtracting the non-resonant component, we find B(Bs->J/ψf'_2(1525))/B(Bs->J/ψϕ)=(26.4 +/- 2.7 +/- 2.4)%.

Observation of excited Lambda_b0 baryons

Using pp collision data corresponding to 1.0 fb-1 integrated luminosity collected by the LHCb detector, two narrow states are observed in the Lambda_b0pi+pi- spectrum with masses 5911.97 +- 0.12(stat) +- 0.02(syst) +- 0.66(Lambda_b0 mass) MeV/c^2 and 5919.77 +- 0.08(stat) +- 0.02(syst) +- 0.66(Lambda_b0 mass) MeV/c^2. The significances of the observations are 5.2 and 10.2 standard deviations, respectively. These states are interpreted as the orbitally-excited Lambda_b0 baryons, Lambda_b*0(5912) and Lambda_b*0(5920).

Observation of the decay B0 -> D0bar K+ K- and evidence for Bs -> D0bar K+ K-

The first observation of the decay B0 -> D0bar K+ K- is reported from an analysis of 0.62 fb-1 of pp collision data collected with the LHCb detector. Its branching fraction is measured relative to that of the topologically similar decay B0 -> D0bar pi+ pi- to be BR(B0 -> D0bar K+ K-)/BR(B0 -> D0bar pi+ pi-) = 0.056+-0.011+-0.007, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic. The significance of the signal is 5.8 sigma. Evidence, with 3.8 sigma significance, for Bs -> D0bar K+ K- decays is also presented, with a relative branching fraction of BR(Bs -> D0bar K+ K-)/BR(B0 -> D0bar K+ K-) = 0.90+-0.27+-0.20.

Using 34.7 pb-1 of data collected with the LHCb detector, the inclusive production of the X(3872) meson in pp collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV is observed for the first time. Candidates are selected in the X(3872) -> J/psi pi+ pi- decay mode, and used to measure sigma(pp -> X(3872) + anything) B(X(3872)-> J/psi pi+ pi-) = 5.4 +- 1.3 (stat) +- 0.8 (syst) nb, where sigma(pp -> X(3872) + anything) is the inclusive production cross-section of X(3872) mesons with rapidity in the range 2.5-4.5 and transverse momentum in the range 5-20 GeV/c. In addition the masses of both the X(3872) and psi(2S) mesons, reconstructed in the J/psi pi+ pi- final state, are measured to be m(X(3872)) = 3871.95 +- 0.48 (stat) +- 0.12 (syst) MeV/c2 and m(psi(2S)) = 3686.12 +- 0.06 (stat) +- 0.10 (syst) MeV/c2

The algorithms have been developed using simulated events and optimized and calibrated with B+ -> J/psi K+, B0 -> J/psi K*0 and B0 -> D*- mu+ nu_mu decay modes with 0.37 fb^-1 of data collected in pp collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV during the 2011 physics run. The opposite-side tagging power is determined in the B+ -> J/psi K+ channel to be (2.10 +- 0.08 +- 0.24) %, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic.

Search for the lepton number violating decays B+→π−μ+μ+B^{+}\to π^- μ^+ μ^+ and B+→K−μ+μ+B^{+}\to K^- μ^+ μ^+

A search is performed for the lepton number violating decay B+→h−μ+μ+B^{+}\to h^- μ^+ μ^+, where h−h^- represents a K−K^- or a π−π^-, using data from the LHCb detector corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 36pb−136pb^{-1}. The decay is forbidden in the Standard Model but allowed in models with a Majorana neutrino. No signal is observed in either channel and limits of B(B+→K−μ+μ+)<5.4×10−8B(B^{+} \to K^- μ^+ μ^+) < 5.4\times 10^{-8} and B(B+→π−μ+μ+)<5.8×10−8B(B^{+} \to π^- μ^+ μ^+) < 5.8\times 10^{-8} are set at the 95% confidence level. These improve the previous best limits by factors of 40 and 30, respectively.

Measurement of charged particle multiplicities in pppp collisions at s=7{\sqrt{s} =7}TeV in the forward region

The charged particle production in proton-proton collisions is studied with the LHCb detector at a centre-of-mass energy of s=7{\sqrt{s} =7}TeV in different intervals of pseudorapidity ηη. The charged particles are reconstructed close to the interaction region in the vertex detector, which provides high reconstruction efficiency in the ηη ranges −2.5<η<−2.0-2.5<η<-2.0 and 2.0<η<4.52.0<η<4.5. The data were taken with a minimum bias trigger, only requiring one or more reconstructed tracks in the vertex detector. By selecting an event sample with at least one track with a transverse momentum greater than 1 GeV/c a hard QCD subsample is investigated. Several event generators are compared with the data; none are able to describe fully the multiplicity distributions or the charged particle density distribution as a function of ηη. In general, the models underestimate the charged particle production.

Measurement of mixing and CP violation parameters in two-body charm decays

A study of mixing and indirect CP violation in D0 mesons through the determination of the parameters y_CP and A_Γ is presented. The parameter y_CP is the deviation from unity of the ratio of effective lifetimes measured in D0 decays to the CP eigenstate K+K- with respect to decays to the Cabibbo favoured mode K-π+. The result measured using data collected by LHCb in 2010, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 29 pb^-1, is y_CP = (5.5+/-6.3_{stat}+/-4.1_{syst}) x 10^-3. The parameter A_Γ is the asymmetry of effective lifetimes measured in decays of D0 and anti-D0 mesons to K+K-. The result is A_Γ = (-5.9+/-5.9_{stat}+/-2.1_{syst}) x 10^-3. A data-driven technique is used to correct for lifetime-biasing effects.

Prompt K_short production in pp collisions at sqrt(s)=0.9 TeV

The production of K_short mesons in pp collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 0.9 TeV is studied with the LHCb detector at the Large Hadron Collider. The luminosity of the analysed sample is determined using a novel technique, involving measurements of the beam currents, sizes and positions, and is found to be 6.8 +/- 1.0 microbarn^-1. The differential prompt K_short production cross-section is measured as a function of the K_short transverse momentum and rapidity in the region 0 < pT < 1.6 GeV/c and 2.5 < y < 4.0. The data are found to be in reasonable agreement with previous measurements and generator expectations.
