Interference effects in the $H(\rightarrow γγ) + 2$ jets channel at the LHC

We compute the interference between the resonant process $pp\to H(\rightarrow γγ)+2 \text{ jets}$ and the corresponding continuum background at leading order in QCD. For the Higgs signal, we include gluon fusion (GF) and vector boson fusion (VBF) production channels, while for the background we consider all tree-level contributions, including pure EW effects (${\cal O}(α_{QED}^4)$) and QCD contributions (${\cal O}(α_{QED}^2 α_{s}^2)$), plus the loop-induced gluon-initiated process. After convolution with the experimental mass resolution, the main effect of the interference is to shift the position of the mass peak, as in the inclusive GF case studied previously. The apparent mass shift is small in magnitude but strongly dependent on the Higgs width, potentially allowing for a measurement of, or bound on, the width itself. In the $H(\rightarrow γγ)+2 \text{ jets}$ channel, the VBF and GF contributions generate shifts of opposite signs which largely cancel, depending on the sets of cuts used, to as little as 5 MeV (toward a lower Higgs mass). The small magnitude of the shift makes this channel a good reference mass for measuring the inclusive mass shift of around 60 MeV in the Standard Model.

Approximate N^3LO Higgs-boson production cross section using physical-kernel constraints

The single-logarithmic enhancement of the physical kernel for Higgs production by gluon-gluon fusion in the heavy top-quark limit is employed to derive the leading so far unknown contributions, ln^{5,4,3}(1-z), to the N^3LO coefficient function in the threshold expansion. Also using knowledge from Higgs-exchange DIS to estimate the remaining terms not vanishing for z = m_H^2/s^hat -> 1, these results are combined with the recently completed soft + virtual contributions to provide an uncertainty band for the complete N^3LO correction. For the 2008 MSTW parton distributions these N^3LO contributions increase the cross section at 14 TeV by (10 +- 2)% and (3 +- 2.5)% for the standard choices mu_R = m_H and mu_R = m_H/2 of the renormalization scale. The remaining uncertainty arising from the hard-scattering cross sections can be quantified as no more than 5%, which is smaller than that due to the strong coupling and the parton distributions.

Parton-to-Pion Fragmentation Reloaded

We present a new, comprehensive global analysis of parton-to-pion fragmentation functions at next-to-leading order accuracy in QCD. The obtained results are based on the latest experimental information on single-inclusive pion production in electron-positron annihilation, lepton-nucleon deep-inelastic scattering, and proton-proton collisions. An excellent description of all data sets is achieved, and the remaining uncertainties in parton-to-pion fragmentation functions are estimated based on the Hessian method. Extensive comparisons to the results from our previous global analysis are performed.

Threshold resummation at N$^3$LL accuracy and soft-virtual cross sections at N$^3$LO

We consider QCD radiative corrections to the production of colourless high-mass systems in hadron collisions. We show that the recent computation of the soft-virtual corrections to Higgs boson production at N$^3$LO [1] together with the universality structure of soft-gluon emission can be exploited to extract the general expression of the hard-virtual coefficient that contributes to threshold resummation at N$^3$LL accuracy. The hard-virtual coefficient is directly related to the process-dependent virtual amplitude through a universal (process-independent) factorization formula that we explicitly evaluate up to three-loop order. As an application, we present the explicit expression of the soft-virtual N$^3$LO corrections for the production of an arbitrary colourless system. In the case of the Drell-Yan process, we confirm the recent result of Ref.[2].

Universality of transverse-momentum resummation and hard factors at the NNLO

We consider QCD radiative corrections to the production of colourless high-mass systems in hadron collisions. The logarithmically-enhanced contributions at small transverse momentum are treated to all perturbative orders by a universal resummation formula that depends on a single process-dependent hard factor. We show that the hard factor is directly related to the all-order virtual amplitude of the corresponding partonic process. The direct relation is universal (process independent), and it is expressed by an all-order factorization formula that we explicitly evaluate up to the next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) in QCD perturbation theory. Once the NNLO scattering amplitude is available, the corresponding hard factor is directly determined: it controls NNLO contributions in resummed calculations at full next-to-next-to-leading logarithmic accuracy, and it can be used in applications of the q_T subtraction formalism to perform fully-exclusive perturbative calculations up to NNLO. The universality structure of the hard factor and its explicit NNLO form are also extended to the related formalism of threshold resummation.

Handbook of LHC Higgs Cross Sections: 3. Higgs Properties

This Report summarizes the results of the activities in 2012 and the first half of 2013 of the LHC Higgs Cross Section Working Group. The main goal of the working group was to present the state of the art of Higgs Physics at the LHC, integrating all new results that have appeared in the last few years. This report follows the first working group report Handbook of LHC Higgs Cross Sections: 1. Inclusive Observables (CERN-2011-002) and the second working group report Handbook of LHC Higgs Cross Sections: 2. Differential Distributions (CERN-2012-002). After the discovery of a Higgs boson at the LHC in mid-2012 this report focuses on refined prediction of Standard Model (SM) Higgs phenomenology around the experimentally observed value of 125-126 GeV, refined predictions for heavy SM-like Higgs bosons as well as predictions in the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model and first steps to go beyond these models. The other main focus is on the extraction of the characteristics and properties of the newly discovered particle such as couplings to SM particles, spin and CP-quantum numbers etc.

Handbook of LHC Higgs Cross Sections: 2. Differential Distributions

This Report summarises the results of the second year's activities of the LHC Higgs Cross Section Working Group. The main goal of the working group was to present the state of the art of Higgs Physics at the LHC, integrating all new results that have appeared in the last few years. The first working group report Handbook of LHC Higgs Cross Sections: 1. Inclusive Observables (CERN-2011-002) focuses on predictions (central values and errors) for total Higgs production cross sections and Higgs branching ratios in the Standard Model and its minimal supersymmetric extension, covering also related issues such as Monte Carlo generators, parton distribution functions, and pseudo-observables. This second Report represents the next natural step towards realistic predictions upon providing results on cross sections with benchmark cuts, differential distributions, details of specific decay channels, and further recent developments.

Higgs boson production at the LHC: transverse momentum resummation effects in the H->2gamma, H->WW->lnu lnu and H->ZZ->4l decay modes

We consider Standard Model Higgs boson production through gluon--gluon fusion in hadron collisions. We combine the calculation of the next-to-next-to-leading order QCD corrections to the inclusive cross section with the resummation of multiple soft-gluon emissions at small transverse momenta up to next-to-next-to-leading logarithmic accuracy. The calculation is implemented in the numerical program HRes and allows us to retain the full kinematics of the Higgs boson and of its decay products. We present selected numerical results for the signal cross section at the LHC (\sqrt{s}=8 TeV), in the H->2gamma, H->WW->lnu lnu and H->ZZ->4l decay channels by using the nominal cuts applied in current Higgs boson searches by the ATLAS and CMS collaborations.

Higgs production at the LHC: updated cross sections at $\sqrt{s}=8$ TeV

We present predictions for the inclusive cross section for Higgs boson production by gluon--gluon fusion in proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}=8$ TeV. Our calculation is accurate up to next-to-next-to-leading order in QCD perturbation theory and includes soft-gluon effects up to next-to-next-to-leading logarithmic accuracy and two-loop electroweak corrections. The dependence on heavy-quark masses is taken into account exactly up to next-to-leading order and next-to-leading logarithmic accuracy, and a treatment of the Higgs boson line-shape is provided according to the complex-pole scheme.

Vector boson production at hadron colliders: hard-collinear coefficients at the NNLO

We consider QCD radiative corrections to vector-boson production in hadron collisions. We present the next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) result of the hard-collinear coefficient function for the all-order resummation of logarithmically-enhanced contributions at small transverse momenta. The coefficient function controls NNLO contributions in resummed calculations at full next-to-next-to-leading logarithmic accuracy. The same coefficient function is used in applications of the subtraction method to perform fully-exclusive perturbative calculations up to NNLO.

Handbook of LHC Higgs Cross Sections: 1. Inclusive Observables

This Report summarizes the results of the first 10 months' activities of the LHC Higgs Cross Sections Working Group. The main goal of the working group was to present the status-of-art on Higgs Physics at the LHC integrating all new results that have appeared in the last few years. The Report is more than a mere collection of the proceedings of the general meetings. The subgroups have been working in different directions. An attempt has been made to present the first Report from these subgroups in a complete and homogeneous form. The subgroups' contributions correspondingly comprise the main parts of the Report. A significant amount of work has been performed in providing higher-order corrections to the Higgs-boson cross sections and pinning down the theoretical uncertainty of the Standard Model predictions. This Report comprises explicit numerical results on total cross sections, leaving the issues of event selection cuts and differential distributions to future publications. The subjects for further study are identified.

Production of Drell--Yan lepton pairs in hadron collisions: transverse-momentum resummation at next-to-next-to-leading logarithmic accuracy

We consider the transverse-momentum (q_T) distribution of Drell--Yan lepton pairs produced in hadron collisions. At small values of q_T, we resum the logarithmically-enhanced perturbative QCD contributions up to next-to-next-to-leading logarithmic accuracy. At intermediate and large values of q_T, we consistently combine resummation with the known next-to-leading order perturbative result. All perturbative terms up to order alpha_S^2 are included in our computation which, after integration over q_T, reproduces the known next-to-next-to-leading order result for the Drell--Yan total cross section. We show and discuss the reduction in the scale dependence of the results with respect to lower-order calculations, estimating the corresponding perturbative uncertainty. We present a preliminary comparison with Tevatron Run II data.

QCD Spin Physics: Partonic Spin Structure of the Nucleon

We discuss some recent developments concerning the nucleon's helicity parton distribution functions: New preliminary data from jet production at RHIC suggest for the first time a non-vanishing polarization of gluons in the nucleon. SIDIS measurements at COMPASS provide better constraints on the strange and light sea quark helicity distributions. Single-longitudinal spin asymmetries in W-boson production have been observed at RHIC and will ultimately give new insights into the light quark and anti-quark helicity structure of the nucleon.

Transverse-momentum resummation: Higgs boson production at the Tevatron and the LHC

We consider the transverse-momentum (q_T) distribution of Standard Model Higgs bosons produced by gluon fusion in hadron collisions. At small q_T (q_T<<m_H, m_H being the mass of the Higgs boson), we resum the logarithmically-enhanced contributions due to multiple soft-gluon emission to all order in QCD perturbation theory. At intermediate and large values of q_T (q_T <~m_H), we consistently combine resummation with the known fixed-order results. We use the most advanced perturbative information that is available at present: next-to-next-to-leading logarithmic resummation combined with the next-to-leading fixed-order calculation. We extend previous results including exactly all the perturbative terms up to order alphas^4 in our computation and, after integration over q_T, we recover the known next-to-next-to-leading order result for the total cross section. We present numerical results at the Tevatron and the LHC, together with an estimate of the corresponding uncertainties. Our calculation is implemented in an updated version of the numerical code HqT.

Threshold resummation for high-transverse-momentum Higgs production at the LHC

We study the resummation of large logarithmic QCD corrections for the process pp ->H+ X when the Higgs boson H is produced at high transverse momentum. The corrections arise near the threshold for partonic reaction and originate from soft gluon emission. We perform the all-order resummation at next-to-leading logarithmic accuracy and match the resummed result with the next-to-leading order perturbative predictions. The effect of resummation on the Higgs transverse momentum distribution at the LHC is discussed.

The back-to-back region in e^+e^- energy--energy correlation

We consider the back-to-back region in the energy--energy correlation in e^+e^- collisions. We present the explicit expression of the O(as^2) logarithmically enhanced contributions up to next-to-next-to-leading logarithmic accuracy. We study the impact of the results in a detailed comparison with precise LEP and SLC data. We find that, when hadronization effects are taken into account as is customarily done in QCD analysis in e^+e^- annihilations, the extracted value of as(M_Z) is in good agreement with the current world average.

The q_T spectrum of the Higgs boson at the LHC in QCD perturbation theory

We consider the transverse-momentum (q_T) distribution of Higgs bosons produced at hadron colliders. We use a formalism that uniformly treats both the small-q_T and large-q_T regions in QCD perturbation theory. At small q_T (q_T << M_H, M_H being the mass of the Higgs boson), we implement an all-order resummation of logarithmically-enhanced contributions up to next-to-next-to-leading logarithmic accuracy. At large q_T (q_T \gtap M_H), we use fixed-order perturbation theory up to next-to-leading order. The resummed and fixed-order approaches are consistently matched by avoiding double-counting in the intermediate-q_T region. In this region, the introduction of unjustified higher-order terms is avoided by imposing unitarity constraints, so that the integral of the q_T spectrum exactly reproduces the perturbative result for the total cross section up to next-to-next-to-leading order. Numerical results at the LHC are presented. These show that the main features of the q_T distribution are quite stable with respect to perturbative QCD uncertainties.

Two hadron production in e+e- annihilation to next-to-leading order accuracy

We discuss the production of two hadrons in e+e- annihilation within the framework of perturbative QCD. The cross section for this process is calculated to next-to-leading order accuracy with a selection of variables that allows the consideration of events where the two hadrons are detected in the same jet. In this configuration we contemplate the possibility that the hadrons come from a double fragmentation of a single parton. The double-fragmentation functions required to describe the transition of a parton to two hadrons are also necessary to completely factorize all collinear singularities. We explicitly show that factorization applies to next-to-leading order in the case of two-hadron production.

Gluon induced contributions to Z gamma production at hadron colliders

We study the contribution of gluon induced partonic subprocesses to Z gamma pair production at hadron colliders. These processes contribute only at next-to-next-to-leading order but are potentially enhanced by two factors of the gluon parton densities. However, we find that their contribution is modest and that next-to-leading order calculations give reliable predictions.

Higgs production in hadron collisions: soft and virtual QCD corrections at NNLO

We consider QCD corrections to Higgs boson production through gluon-gluon fusion in hadron collisions. Using the recently evaluated two-loop amplitude for this process and the corresponding factorization formulae for soft-gluon bremsstrahlung at O(alpha_s^2), we compute the soft and virtual contributions to the NNLO cross section. We also discuss soft-gluon resummation at next-to-next-to-leading logarithmic accuracy. Numerical results for Higgs boson production at the LHC are presented.

WGamma and ZGamma production at Hadron Colliders

We present a general purpose Monte Carlo program for the calculation of any infrared safe observable in WGamma and ZGamma production at hadron colliders at next-to-leading order in alpha_s. We treat the leptonic decays of the W and Z-boson in the narrow-width approximation, but retain all spin information via decay angle correlations. The effect of anomalous triple gauge boson couplings is investigated and we give the analytical expressions for the corresponding amplitudes. Furthermore, we propose a way to study the effect of anomalous couplings without introducing the ambiguity of form factors.

Higgs production with large transverse momentum in hadronic collisions at next-to-leading order

Inclusive associated production of a light Higgs boson (m_H < m_t) with one jet in pp collisions is studied in next-to-leading order QCD. Transverse momentum (p_T < 30 GeV) and rapidity distributions of the Higgs boson are calculated for the LHC in the large top-quark mass limit. It is pointed out that, as much as in the case of inclusive Higgs production, the K-factor of this process is large (~1.6) and depends weakly on the kinematics in a wide range of transverse momentum and rapidity intervals. Our result confirms previous suggestions that the production channel p+p -> H+jet -> gamma+gamma+jet gives a measurable signal for Higgs production at the LHC in the mass range 100-140 GeV, crucial also for the ultimate test of the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model.

Next to Leading Order Semi-inclusive Spin Asymmetries

We have computed semi-inclusive spin asymmetries for proton and deuteron targets including next to leading order (NLO) QCD corrections and contributions coming from the target fragmentation region. These corrections have been estimated using NLO fragmentation functions, parton distributions and also a model for spin dependent fracture functions which is proposed here. We have found that NLO corrections are small but non-negligible in a scheme where gluons are polarised and that our estimate for target fragmentation effects does not modify significantly charged asymmetries but affects the so called difference asymmetries.

Scale Dependence of Polarized DIS Asymmetries

We compare the $Q^{2}$ dependence of the polarized deep inelastic scattering proton asymmetry, driven by the leading order Altarelli Parisi evolution equations, to those arising from fixed order $α_{s}$ and $α_{s}^{2}$ approximations. It is shown that the evolution effects associated with gluons, which are not properly taken into account by the leading order approximation, cannot be neglected in the analysis of the most recent experimental data.

${\cal O}(α_{s})$ Spin-Dependent Weak Structure Functions

The complete next to leading logarithmic (${\cal O}(α_{s})$) corrections to the spin dependent weak deep inelastic structure functions $g_{1},g_{3}$ and $g_{4}$, are calculated using dimensional regularization within the HVBM method. Analysing the quark and gluon initiated contributions to these corrections for different values for the quark masses, a consistent factorization prescription for spin dependent quark distributions, which safely removes soft contributions, is defined. It is shown that within this scheme, quark initiated corrections are comparable in magnitude to those of gluonic origin, even though their contributions to the moments are small.
