More on dual actions for massive spin-2 particles

Here we start from a dual version of Vasiliev's first order action for massless spin-2 particles (linearized first order Einstein-Hilbert) and derive, via Kaluza-Klein dimensional reduction from $D+1$ to $D$ dimensions, a set of dual massive spin-2 models. This set includes the massive "BR" model, a spin-2 analogue of the spin-1 Cremmer-Scherk model. In our approach the linearized Riemann curvature emerges from a solution of a functional constraint. In $D=2+1$ the BR model can be written as a linearized version of a new bimetric model for massive gravitons. We also have a new massive spin-2 model, in arbitrary dimensions, invariant under linearized diffeomorphisms. It is given in terms of a non symmetric rank-2 tensor and a mixed symmetry tensor.

Embeddings of the "New Massive Gravity"

Using different types of embeddings of equations of motion we investigate the existence of generalizations of the "New Massive Gravity" (NMG) model with the same particle content (massive gravitons). By using the Weyl symmetry as a guiding principle for the embeddings we show that the Noether gauge embedding approach leads us to a sixth order model in derivatives with either a massive or a massless ghost. If the Weyl symmetry is implemented by means of a Stueckelberg field we obtain a new scalar-tensor model for massive gravitons. It is ghost free and Weyl invariant at linearized level. The model can be nonlinearly completed into a scalar field coupled to the NMG theory. The elimination of the scalar field leads to a nonlocal modification of the NMG. We also prove to all orders in derivatives that there is no local, ghost free embedding of the linearized NMG equations of motion around Minkowski space when written in terms of one symmetric tensor. Regarding that point, NMG differs from the Fierz-Pauli theory, since in later case we can replace the Einstein-Hilbert action by specific $f(R,\Box\, R)$ generalizations and still keep the theory ghost free at linearized level.

Dual descriptions of massive spin-3 particles in $D=2+1$ via Noether gauge embedment

We present here a relationship among massive self-dual models for spin-3 particles in $D=2+1$ via the Noether Gauge Embedment $(NGE)$ procedure. Starting with a first order model (in derivatives) $S_{SD(1)}$ we have obtained a sequence of four self-dual models $S_{SD(i)}$ where $i=1,2,3,4$. We demonstrate that the $NGE$ procedure generate the correct action for the auxiliary fields automatically. We obtain the whole action for the $4th$ order self-dual model including all the needed auxiliary fields to get rid of the ghosts of the theory.

Master actions for massive spin-3 particles in D=2+1

We present here a relationship among massive self-dual models for spin-3 particles in $D=2+1$ via the master action procedure. Starting with a first order model (in derivatives) $S_{SD(1)}$ we have constructed a master action which interpolates among a sequence of four self-dual models $S_{SD(i)}$ where $i=1,2,3,4$. By analyzing the particle content of mixing terms, we give additional arguments that explain why it is apparently impossible to jump from the fourth order model to a higher order model. We have also analyzed similarities and differences between the fourth order $K$-term in the spin-2 case and the analogous fourth order term in the spin-3 context.

Dimensional reduction of the massless limit of the linearized "New Massive Gravity"

The so called "New Massive Gravity" in $D=2+1$ consists of the Einstein-Hilbert action (with minus sign) plus a quadratic term in curvatures ($K$-term). Here we perform the Kaluza-Klein dimensional reduction of the linearized $K$-term to $D=1+1$. We end up with a fourth-order massive electrodynamics in $D=1+1$ described by a rank-2 tensor. Remarkably, there appears a local symmetry in $D=1+1$ which persists even after gauging away the Stueckelberg fields of the dimensional reduction. It plays the role of a $U(1)$ gauge symmetry. Although of higher-order in derivatives, the new $2D$ massive electrodynamics is ghost free, as we show here. It is shown, via master action, to be dual to the Maxwell-Proca theory with a scalar Stueckelberg field.

Massive "spin-2" theories in arbitrary $D \ge 3$ dimensions

Here we show that in arbitrary dimensions $D\ge 3$ there are two families of second order Lagrangians describing massive "spin-2" particles via a nonsymmetric rank-2 tensor. They differ from the usual Fierz-Pauli theory in general. At zero mass one of the families is Weyl invariant. Such massless theory has no particle content in $D=3$ and gives rise, via master action, to a dual higher order (in derivatives) description of massive spin-2 particles in $D=3$ where both the second and the fourth order terms are Weyl invariant, contrary to the linearized New Massive Gravity. However, only the fourth order term is invariant under arbitrary antisymmetric shifts. Consequently, the antisymmetric part of the tensor $e_{[μν]}$ propagates at large momentum as $1/p^2$ instead of $1/p^4$. So, the same kind of obstacle for the renormalizability of the New Massive Gravity reappears in this nonsymmetric higher order description of massive spin-2 particles.

Massive spin-2 particles via embedment of the Fierz-Pauli equations of motion

Here we obtain alternative descriptions of massive spin-2 particles by an embedding procedure of the Fierz-Pauli equations of motion. All models are free of ghosts at quadratic level although most of them are of higher order in derivatives. The models that we obtain can be nonlinearly completed in terms of a dynamic and a fixed metric. They include some $f(R)$ massive gravities recently considered in the literature. In some cases there is an infrared (no derivative) modification of the Fierz-Pauli mass term altogether with higher order terms in derivatives. The analytic structure of the propagator of the corresponding free theories is not affected by the extra terms in the action as compared to the usual second order Fierz-Pauli theory.

A note on linearized "New Massive Gravity" in arbitrary dimensions

By means of a triple master action we deduce here a linearized version of the "New Massive Gravity" (NMG) in arbitrary dimensions. The theory contains a 4th-order and a 2nd-order term in derivatives. The 4th-order term is invariant under a generalized Weyl symmetry. The action is formulated in terms of a traceless $η^{μν}Ω_{μνρ}=0$ mixed symmetry tensor $Ω_{μνρ}=-Ω_{μρν}$ and corresponds to the massive Fierz-Pauli action with the replacement $e_{μν}=\p^ρΩ_{μνρ}$. The linearized 3D and 4D NMG theories are recovered via the invertible maps $Ω_{μνρ} = ε_{νρ}^{\quadβ}h_{βμ} $ and $Ω_{μνρ} = ε_{νρ}^{\quad γδ}T_{[γδ]μ} $ respectively. The properties $h_{μν}=h_{νμ}$ and $T_{[[γδ]μ]}=0$ follow from the traceless restriction. The equations of motion of the linearized NMG theory can be written as zero "curvature" conditions $\p_νT_{ρμ} - \p_ρT_{νμ}=0$ in arbitrary dimensions.

A note on the nonuniqueness of the massive Fierz-Pauli theory and spectator fields

It is possible to show that there are three independent families of models describing a massive spin-2 particle via a rank-2 tensor. One of them contains the massive Fierz-Pauli model, the only case described by a symmetric tensor. The three families have different local symmetries in the massless limit and can not be interconnected by any local field redefinition. We show here however, that they can be related with the help of a decoupled and non dynamic (spectator) field. The spectator field may be either an antisymmetric tensor $B_{μν}=-B_{νμ}$, a vector $A_μ$ or a scalar field $φ$, corresponding to each of the three families. The addition of the extra field allows us to formulate master actions which interpolate between the symmetric Fierz-Pauli theory and the other models. We argue that massive gravity models based on the Fierz-Pauli theory are not expected to be equivalent to possible local self-interacting theories built up on the top of the two new families of massive spin-2 models. The approach used here may be useful to investigate dual (nonsymmetric) formulations of higher spin particles.

Massive spin-2 particle from a rank-2 tensor

Here we obtain all possible second-order theories for a rank-2 tensor which describe a massive spin-2 particle. We start with a general second-order Lagrangian with ten real parameters. The absence of lower spin modes and the existence of two local field redefinitions leads us to only one free parameter. The solutions split into three one-parameter classes according to the local symmetries of the massless limit. In the class which contains the usual massive Fierz-Pauli theory, the subset of spin-1 massless symmetries is maximal. In another class where the subset of spin-0 symmetries is maximal, the massless theory is invariant under Weyl transformations and the mass term does not need to fit in the form of the Fierz-Pauli mass term. In the remaining third class neither the spin-1 nor the spin-0 symmetry is maximal and we have a new family of spin-2 massive theories.

Nonuniqueness of the Fierz-Pauli mass term for a nonsymmetic tensor

Starting with a description of massive spin-2 particles in D=4 in terms of a mixed symmetry tensor $\tmnd $ without totally antisymmetric part ($T_{[[μν]ρ]}=0$) we obtain a dual model in terms of a nonsymmetric tensor $e_{μν}$. The model is of second-order in derivatives and its mass term $(e_{μν}e^{νμ} + c \, e^2)$ contains an arbitrary real parameter $c$. Remarkably, it is free of ghosts for any real value of $c$ and describes a massive spin-2 particle as expected from duality. The antisymmetric part $e_{[μν]}$ plays the role of auxiliary fields, vanishing on shell. In the massless case the model describes a massless spin-2 particle without ghosts.

Mass generation for abelian spin-1 particles via a symmetric tensor

In the topologically massive BF model (TMBF) the photon becomes massive via coupling to an antisymmetric tensor, without breaking the U(1) gauge symmetry . There is no need of a Higgs field. The TMBF model is dual to a first-order (in derivatives) formulation of the Maxwell-Proca theory where the antisymmetric field plays the role of an auxiliary field. Since the Maxwell-Proca theory also admits a first-order version which makes use of an auxiliary symmetric tensor, we investigate here a possible generalization of the TMBF model where the photon acquires mass via coupling to a symmetric tensor. We show that it is indeed possible to build up dual models to the Maxwell-Proca theory where the U(1) gauge symmetry is manifest without Higgs field, but after a local field redefinition the vector field eats up the trace of the symmetric tensor and becomes massive. So the explicit U(1) symmetry can be removed unlike the TMBF model.

Spin-1 duality in $D$-dimensions

It is known that the Maxwell theory in $D$ dimensions can be written in a first order form (in derivatives) by introducing a totally antisymmetric field which leads to a $(D-3)$-form dual theory. Remarkably, one can replace the antisymmetric field by a symmetric rank two tensor ($W_{μν}=W_{νμ}$). Such master action establishes the duality between the Maxwell-theory and a fourth order higher rank model in a $D$-dimensional flat space time. A naive generalization to the curved space shows a connection between the recently found D=4 critical gravity and the Maxwell theory plus a coupling term to the Ricci tensor ($R_{μν}A^μA^ν$). The mass of the spin-1 particle which appears in the D=4 critical gravity linearized around anti-de Sitter space is the same one obtained from the Ricci coupling term. We also work out, in flat space time, the explicitly massive case (Maxwell-Proca) which is dual to a second order theory for $W_{μν}$.

Duality of parity doublets of helicity $\pm 2$ in $D=2+1$

In $D=2+1$ dimensions there are two dual descriptions of parity singlets of helicity $\pm 1$, namely the self-dual model of first-order (in derivatives) and the Maxwell-Chern-Simons theory of second-order. Correspondingly, for helicity $\pm 2$ there are four models $S_{SD\pm}^{(r)}$ describing parity singlets of helicities $\pm 2$. They are of first-, second-,third- and fourth-order ($r=1,2,3,4$) respectively. Here we show that the generalized soldering of the opposite helicity models $S_{SD+}^{(4)}$ and $S_{SD-}^{(4)}$ leads to the linearized form of the new massive gravity suggested by Bergshoeff, Hohm and Townsend (BHT) similarly to the soldering of $S_{SD+}^{(3)}$ and $S_{SD-}^{(3)}$. We argue why in both cases we have the same result. We also find out a triple master action which interpolates between the three dual models: linearized BHT theory, $S_{SD+}^{(3)} + S_{SD-}^{(3)}$ and $S_{SD+}^{(4)} + S_{SD-}^{(4)}$. By comparing gauge invariant correlation functions we deduce dual maps between those models. In particular, we learn how to decompose the field of the linearized BHT theory in helicity eigenstates of the dual models up to gauge transformations.

Unusual Yang-Lee edge singularity in the one-dimensional axial-next-to-nearest-neighbor Ising model

We show here for the one-dimensional spin-1/2 ANNNI (axial-next-to-nearest-neighbor-Ising) model in an external magnetic field that the linear density of Yang-Lee zeros may diverge with critical exponent $σ= -2/3$ at the Yang-Lee edge singularity. The necessary condition for this unusual behavior is the triple degeneracy of the transfer matrix eigenvalues. If this condition is absent we have the usual value $σ= -1/2$. Analogous results have been found in the literature in the spin-1 Blume-Emery-Griffths model and in the three-state Potts model in a magnetic field with two complex components. Our results support the universality of $σ= -2/3$ which might be a one-dimensional footprint of a tricritical version of the Yang-Lee-Edge singularity possibly present also in higher-dimensional spin models.

Unitarity of spin-2 theories with linearized Weyl symmetry in $D=2+1$

Here we prove unitarity of the recently found fourth-order self-dual model of spin-2 by investigating the analytic structure of its propagator. The model describes massive particles of helicity +2 (or -2) in $D=2+1$ and corresponds to the quadratic truncation of a higher derivative topologically massive gravity about a flat background. It is an intriguing example of a theory where a term in the propagator of the form $1/\lbrack\Box^2 (\Box - m^2)\rbrack $ does not lead to ghosts. The crucial role of the linearized Weyl symmetry in getting rid of the ghosts is pointed out. We use a peculiar pair of gauge conditions which fix the linearized reparametrizations and linearized Weyl symmetries separetely.

Generalized duality between local vector theories in $D=2+1$

The existence of an interpolating master action does not guarantee the same spectrum for the interpolated dual theories. In the specific case of a generalized self-dual (GSD) model defined as the addition of the Maxwell term to the self-dual model in $D=2+1$, previous master actions have furnished a dual gauge theory which is either nonlocal or contains a ghost mode. Here we show that by reducing the Maxwell term to first order by means of an auxiliary field we are able to define a master action which interpolates between the GSD model and a couple of non-interacting Maxwell-Chern-Simons theories of opposite helicities. The presence of an auxiliary field explains the doubling of fields in the dual gauge theory. A generalized duality transformation is defined and both models can be interpreted as self-dual models. Furthermore, it is shown how to obtain the gauge invariant correlators of the non-interacting MCS theories from the correlators of the self-dual field in the GSD model and vice-versa. The derivation of the non-interacting MCS theories from the GSD model, as presented here, works in the opposite direction of the soldering approach.

Generalizing the Soldering procedure

We start this work by revisiting the problem of the soldering of two chiral Schwinger models of opposite chiralities. We verify that, in contrast with what one can conclude from the soldering literature, the usual sum of these models is, in fact, gauge invariant and corresponds to a composite model, where the component models are the vector and axial Schwinger models. As a consequence, we reinterpret this formalism as a kind of degree of freedom reduction mechanism. This result has led us to discover a second soldering possibility giving rise to the axial Schwinger model. This new result is seemingly rather general. We explore it here in the soldering of two Maxwell-Chern-Simons theories with different masses.

The Jacobi identity for Dirac-like brackets

For redundant second-class constraints the Dirac brackets cannot be defined and new brackets must be introduced. We prove here that the Jacobi identity for the new brackets must hold on the surface of the second-class constraints. In order to illustrate our proof we work out explicitly the cases of a fractional spin particle in 2+1 dimensions and the original Brink-Schwarz massless superparticle in D=10 dimensions in a Lorentz covariant constraints separation.

A new constraints separation for the original D=10 massless superparticle

We study the problem of covariant separation between first and second class constraints for the $D=10$ Brink-Schwarz superparticle. Opposite to the supersymmetric light-cone frame separation, we show here that there is a Lorentz covariant way to identify the second class constraints such that, however, supersymmetry is broken. Consequences for the $D=10$ superstring are briefly discussed.

Correlation Functions in non critical (super) string theory

We consider the correlation functions of the tachyon vertex operator of the super Liouville theory coupled to matter fields in the super Coulomb gas formulation, on world sheets with spherical topology. After integrating over the zero mode and assuming that the $s$ parameter takes an integer value, we subsequently continue it to an arbitrary real number and compute the correlators in a closed form. We also included an arbitrary number of screening charges and, as a result, after renormalizing them, as well as the external legs and the cosmological constant, the form of the final amplitudes do not modify. The result is remarkably parallel to the bosonic case. For completeness, we discussed the calculation of bosonic correlators including arbitrary screening charges.
