Generalized forms and gravitation

The algebra and calculus of generalized differential forms are reviewed and employed to construct a class of generalized connections and to investigate their properties. The class includes generalized connections which are flat when Einstein's vacuum field equations are satisfied. Generalized Chern-Simons action principles are formulated and it is shown that certain of these have Einstein's vacuum field equations as Euler-Lagrange equations.

Generalized forms, vector fields and superspace

Vector fields with components which are generalized zero-forms are constructed. Inner products with generalized forms, Lie derivatives and Lie brackets are computed. The results are shown to generalize previously reported results for generalized vector fields. Hamiltonian vector fields are discussed. Generalized affine connections and metrics are defined and the fundamental theorem of metric differential geometry is extended. The global structure of the exterior derivative of generalized forms is investigated.

Fuzzy-pp Waves

We present a noncommutative version of a plane-wave solution to the gravitational field equations. We start with a given classical solution, admittedly rather simple, and construct an algebra and a differential calculus which supports the metric. In the particular solution presented as an example the 1-forms do not anticommute, to a degree which depends on the amplitude of the deviation of the metric from the standard Minkowski metric.

Linearized Constraints in the Connection Representation: Hamilton-Jacobi Solution

Newman and Rovelli have used singular Hamilton-Jacobi transformations to reduce the phase space of general relativity in terms of the Ashtekar variables. Their solution of the gauge constraint cannot be inverted and indeed has no Minkowski space limit. Nonetheless, we exhibit an explicit Hamilton-Jacobi solution of all the linearized constraints. The result does not encourage an iterative solution, but it does indicate the origin of the singularity of the Newman-Rovelli result.
