Helioseismic Holography of Simulated Solar Convection and Prospects for the Detection of Small-Scale Subsurface Flows

We perform helioseismic holography on realistic solar convection simulations and compare the observed travel-time perturbations with the expected travel times from the horizontal flows in the simulations computed from forward models under the assumption of the Born approximation. We demonstrate reasonable agreement between the observed and model travel times which reinforces the validity of helioseismic holography in the detection of subsurface horizontal flows. From the variation of the signal-to-noise ratio with depth, we conclude that the helioseismic detection of individual flow structures with spatial scales of supergranulation or smaller is not possible for depths below about 5 Mm below the surface over time scales less than a day. Approximately half of the observed signal originates within the first 2 Mm below the surface. A consequence of this is a rapid decrease (and reversal in some cases) of the travel-time perturbations with depth due to the contribution to the measurements of oppositely directed surface flows in neighboring convective cells. This confirms an earlier interpretation of similar effects reported from observations.

A Cicerone for the Physics of Charm

After briefly recapitulating the history of the charm quantum number we sketch the experimental environments and instruments employed to study the behaviour of charm hadrons and then describe the theoretical tools for treating charm dynamics. We discuss a wide range of inclusive production processes before analyzing the spectroscopy of hadrons with hidden and open charm and the weak lifetimes of charm mesons and baryons. Then we address leptonic, exclusive semileptonic and nonleptonic charm decays. Finally we treat $D^0 - \bar D^0$ oscillations and CP (and CPT) violation before concluding with some comments on charm and the quark-gluon plasma. We will make the case that future studies of charm dynamics -- in particular of CP violation -- can reveal the presence of New Physics. The experimental sensitivity has only recently reached a level where this could reasonably happen, yet only as the result of dedicated efforts. This review is meant to be both a pedagogical introduction for the young scholar and a useful reference for the experienced researcher. We aim for a self-contained description of the fundamental features while providing a guide through the literature for more technical issues.

Imprecated, yet Impeccable: On the Theoretical Evaluation of Gamma(B -> X_c \ell ν)

We present a detailed evaluation of the total semileptonic B meson width in terms of |V_{cb}| and heavy quark parameters (quark masses and the expectation values of local heavy quark operators). Special attention is given to perturbative corrections which can precisely be calculated in a scheme with a hard Wilsonian cutoff at a scale around 1GeV appropriate for the OPE, and to the potential impact of higher-order power corrections. We point out that the latter require control over possible contributions from four-quark operators containing charm quark fields. Analytical expressions are given which allow evaluating the width with various choices of parameters; ready-to-use expressions showing the dependence on the heavy quark parameters are presented as well. We illustrate these results by commenting on how these parameters can be extracted and what accuracy is likely to be achievable in the near future.
