The $U$-plane of rank-one 4d $\mathcal{N}=2$ KK theories

The simplest non-trivial 5d superconformal field theories (SCFT) are the famous rank-one theories with $E_n$ flavour symmetry. We study their $U$-plane, which is the one-dimensional Coulomb branch of the theory on $\mathbb{R}^4 \times S^1$. The total space of the Seiberg-Witten (SW) geometry -- the $E_n$ SW curve fibered over the $U$-plane -- is described as a rational elliptic surface with a singular fiber of type $I_{9-n}$ at infinity. A classification of all possible Coulomb branch configurations, for the $E_n$ theories and their 4d descendants, is given by Persson's classification of rational elliptic surfaces. We show that the global form of the flavour symmetry group is encoded in the Mordell-Weil group of the SW elliptic fibration. We study in detail many special points in parameters space, such as points where the flavour symmetry enhances, and/or where Argyres-Douglas and Minahan-Nemeschansky theories appear. In a number of important instances, including in the massless limit, the $U$-plane is a modular curve, and we use modularity to investigate aspects of the low-energy physics, such as the spectrum of light particles at strong coupling and the associated BPS quivers. We also study the gravitational couplings on the $U$-plane, matching the infrared expectation for the couplings $A(U)$ and $B(U)$ to the UV computation using the Nekrasov partition function.

On 5d SCFTs and their BPS quivers. Part I: B-branes and brane tilings

We study the spectrum of BPS particles on the Coulomb branch of five-dimensional superconformal field theories (5d SCFTs) compactified on a circle. By engineering these theories in M-theory on ${\mathbf X} \times S^1 $, for ${\mathbf X}$ an isolated Calabi-Yau threefold singularity, we naturally identify the BPS category of the 5d theory on a circle with the derived category of coherent sheaves on a resolution of ${\mathbf X}$. It follows that the BPS spectrum can be studied in terms of 5d BPS quivers, which are the fractional-brane quivers for the singularity ${\mathbf X}$. 5d BPS quivers generalize the well-studied 4d BPS quivers for 4d $\mathcal{N}{=}2$ gauge theories that can be obtained from ${\mathbf X}$ in so-called geometric engineering limits. We study the interplay between 4d and 5d BPS quivers in detail. We particularly focus on examples when ${\mathbf X}$ is a toric singularity, in which case the 5d BPS quiver is given in terms of a brane tiling. For instance, the well-studied $Y^{p,q}$ brane tiling gives a 5d BPS quiver for the $SU(p)_q$ 5d gauge theory. We present a conjecture about the structure of the BPS spectra of a wide class of models, which we test in the simple case of the 5d $SU(2)_0$ theory (more precisely, the $E_1$ SCFT). We also argue that 5d UV dualities can be realized in terms of mutation sequences on the BPS quivers, which are in turn interpreted as autoequivalences of the BPS category.

Comments on twisted indices in 3d supersymmetric gauge theories

We study three-dimensional ${\mathcal N}=2$ supersymmetric gauge theories on ${Σ_g \times S^1}$ with a topological twist along $Σ_g$, a genus-$g$ Riemann surface. The twisted supersymmetric index at genus $g$ and the correlation functions of half-BPS loop operators on $S^1$ can be computed exactly by supersymmetric localization. For $g=1$, this gives a simple UV computation of the 3d Witten index. Twisted indices provide us with a clean derivation of the quantum algebra of supersymmetric Wilson loops, for any Yang-Mills-Chern-Simons-matter theory, in terms of the associated Bethe equations for the theory on ${\mathbb R}^2 \times S^1$. This also provides a powerful and simple tool to study 3d ${\mathcal N}=2$ Seiberg dualities. Finally, we study A- and B-twisted indices for ${\mathcal N}=4$ supersymmetric gauge theories, which turns out to be very useful for quantitative studies of three-dimensional mirror symmetry. We also briefly comment on a relation between the $S^2 \times S^1$ twisted indices and the Hilbert series of ${\mathcal N}=4$ moduli spaces.

Localization of twisted $\mathcal{N}{=}(0,2)$ gauged linear sigma models in two dimensions

We study two-dimensional $\mathcal{N}{=}(0,2)$ supersymmetric gauged linear sigma models (GLSMs) using supersymmetric localization. We consider $\mathcal{N}{=}(0,2)$ theories with an $R$-symmetry, which can always be defined on curved space by a pseudo-topological twist while preserving one of the two supercharges of flat space. For GLSMs which are deformations of $\mathcal{N}{=}(2,2)$ GLSMs and retain a Coulomb branch, we consider the $A/2$-twist and compute the genus-zero correlation functions of certain pseudo-chiral operators, which generalize the simplest twisted chiral ring operators away from the $\mathcal{N}{=}(2,2)$ locus. These correlation functions can be written in terms of a certain residue operation on the Coulomb branch, generalizing the Jeffrey-Kirwan residue prescription relevant for the $\mathcal{N}{=}(2,2)$ locus. For abelian GLSMs, we reproduce existing results with new formulas that render the quantum sheaf cohomology relations and other properties manifest. For non-abelian GLSMs, our methods lead to new results. As an example, we briefly discuss the quantum sheaf cohomology of the Grassmannian manifold.

The equivariant A-twist and gauged linear sigma models on the two-sphere

We study two-dimensional $\mathcal{N}=(2,2)$ supersymmetric gauged linear sigma models (GLSM) on the $Ω$-deformed sphere, $S^2_Ω$, which is a one-parameter deformation of the $A$-twisted sphere. We provide an exact formula for the $S^2_Ω$ supersymmetric correlation functions using supersymmetric localization. The contribution of each instanton sector is given in terms of a Jeffrey-Kirwan residue on the Coulomb branch. In the limit of vanishing $Ω$-deformation, the localization formula greatly simplifies the computation of $A$-twisted correlation functions, and leads to new results for non-abelian theories. We discuss a number of examples and comment on the $ε_Ω$-deformation of the quantum cohomology relations. Finally, we present a complementary Higgs branch localization scheme in the special case of abelian gauge groups.

Comments on N=(2,2) Supersymmetry on Two-Manifolds

We study curved-space rigid supersymmetry for two-dimensional $\mathcal{N}=(2,2)$ supersymmetric fields theories with a vector-like $R$-symmetry by coupling such theories to background supergravity. The associated Killing spinors can be viewed as holomorphic sections of particular complex line bundles over Euclidean space-time, which severely restrict the allowed supersymmetric couplings on compact orientable Riemann surfaces without boundaries. For genus $g>1$, the only consistent non-singular couplings are the ones dictated by the topological $A$-twist. On spaces with $S^2$ topology, there exist additional supersymmetric backgrounds with $m=0$ or $\pm 1$ unit of flux for the $R$-symmetry gauge field. The $m=-1$ case includes the $Ω$-background on the sphere. We also systematically work out the curved-space supersymmetry multiplets and supersymmetric Lagrangians.

From Rigid Supersymmetry to Twisted Holomorphic Theories

We study N=1 field theories with a U(1)_R symmetry on compact four-manifolds M. Supersymmetry requires M to be a complex manifold. The supersymmetric theory on M can be described in terms of conventional fields coupled to background supergravity, or in terms of twisted fields adapted to the complex geometry of M. Many properties of the theory that are difficult to see in one formulation are simpler in the other one. We use the twisted description to study the dependence of the partition function Z_M on the geometry of M, as well as coupling constants and background gauge fields, recovering and extending previous results. We also indicate how to generalize our analysis to three-dimensional N=2 theories with a U(1)_R symmetry. In this case supersymmetry requires M to carry a transversely holomorphic foliation, which endows it with a near-perfect analogue of complex geometry. Finally, we present new explicit formulas for the dependence of Z_M on the choice of U(1)_R symmetry in four and three dimensions, and illustrate them for complex manifolds diffeomorphic to S^3 x S^1, as well as general squashed three-spheres.

The $\mathcal{N}=1$ Chiral Multiplet on $T^2\times S^2$ and Supersymmetric Localization

We compute the supersymmetric partition function of an $\mathcal{N}=1$ chiral multiplet coupled to an external Abelian gauge field on complex manifolds with $T^2 \times S^2$ topology. The result is locally holomorphic in the complex structure moduli of $T^2\times S^2$. This computation illustrates in a simple example some recently obtained constraints on the parameter dependence of supersymmetric partition functions. We also devise a simple method to compute the chiral multiplet partition function on any four-manifold $\mathcal{M}_4$ preserving two supercharges of opposite chiralities, via supersymmetric localization. In the case of $\mathcal{M}_4=S^3\times S^1$, we provide a path integral derivation of the previously known result, the elliptic gamma function, which emphasizes its dependence on the $S^3 \times S^1$ complex structure moduli.

Supersymmetric Field Theories on Three-Manifolds

We construct supersymmetric field theories on Riemannian three-manifolds M, focusing on N=2 theories with a U(1)_R symmetry. Our approach is based on the rigid limit of new minimal supergravity in three dimensions, which couples to the flat-space supermultiplet containing the R-current and the energy-momentum tensor. The field theory on M possesses a single supercharge, if and only if M admits an almost contact metric structure that satisfies a certain integrability condition. This may lead to global restrictions on M, even though we can always construct one supercharge on any given patch. We also analyze the conditions for the presence of additional supercharges. In particular, two supercharges of opposite R-charge exist on every Seifert manifold. We present general supersymmetric Lagrangians on M and discuss their flat-space limit, which can be analyzed using the R-current supermultiplet. As an application, we show how the flat-space two-point function of the energy-momentum tensor in N=2 superconformal theories can be calculated using localization on a squashed sphere.

The Geometry of Supersymmetric Partition Functions

We consider supersymmetric field theories on compact manifolds M and obtain constraints on the parameter dependence of their partition functions Z_M. Our primary focus is the dependence of Z_M on the geometry of M, as well as background gauge fields that couple to continuous flavor symmetries. For N=1 theories with a U(1)_R symmetry in four dimensions, M must be a complex manifold with a Hermitian metric. We find that Z_M is independent of the metric and depends holomorphically on the complex structure moduli. Background gauge fields define holomorphic vector bundles over M and Z_M is a holomorphic function of the corresponding bundle moduli. We also carry out a parallel analysis for three-dimensional N=2 theories with a U(1)_R symmetry, where the necessary geometric structure on M is a transversely holomorphic foliation (THF) with a transversely Hermitian metric. Again, we find that Z_M is independent of the metric and depends holomorphically on the moduli of the THF. We discuss several applications, including manifolds diffeomorphic to S^3 x S^1 or S^2 x S^1, which are related to supersymmetric indices, and manifolds diffeomorphic to S^3 (squashed spheres). In examples where Z_M has been calculated explicitly, our results explain many of its observed properties.

Comments on 3d Seiberg-like dualities

We study Seiberg-like dualities in three dimensional N=2 supersymmetric theories, emphasizing Chern-Simons terms for the global symmetry group, which affect contact terms in two-point functions of global currents and are essential to the duality map. We introduce new Seiberg-like dualities for Yang-Mills-Chern-Simons theories with unitary gauge groups with arbitrary numbers of matter fields in the fundamental and antifundamental representations. These dualities are derived from Aharony duality by real mass deformations. They allow to initiate the systematic study of Seiberg-like dualities in Chern-Simons quivers. We also comment on known Seiberg-like dualities for symplectic and orthogonal gauge groups and extend the latter to the Yang-Mills case. We check our proposals by showing that the localized partition functions on the squashed S^3 match between dual descriptions.

Comments on Chern-Simons Contact Terms in Three Dimensions

We study contact terms of conserved currents and the energy-momentum tensor in three-dimensional quantum field theory. They are associated with Chern-Simons terms for background fields. While the integer parts of these contact terms are ambiguous, their fractional parts are meaningful physical observables. In N=2 supersymmetric theories with a U(1)_R symmetry some of these observables lead to an anomaly. Moreover, they can be computed exactly using localization, leading to new tests of dualities.

Contact Terms, Unitarity, and F-Maximization in Three-Dimensional Superconformal Theories

We consider three-dimensional N=2 superconformal field theories on a three-sphere and analyze their free energy F as a function of background gauge and supergravity fields. A crucial role is played by certain local terms in these background fields, including several Chern-Simons terms. The presence of these terms clarifies a number of subtle properties of F. This understanding allows us to prove the F-maximization principle. It also explains why computing F via localization leads to a complex answer, even though we expect it to be real in unitary theories. We discuss several corollaries of our results and comment on the relation to the F-theorem.

Seiberg duality for Chern-Simons quivers and D-brane mutations

Chern-Simons quivers for M2-branes at Calabi-Yau singularities are best understood as the low energy theory of D2-branes on a dual type IIA background. We show how the D2-brane point of view naturally leads to three dimensional Seiberg dualities for Chern-Simons quivers with chiral matter content: They arise from a change of brane basis (or mutation), in complete analogy with the better known Seiberg dualities for D3-brane quivers. This perspective reproduces the known rules for Seiberg dualities in Chern-Simons-Yang-Mills theories with unitary gauge groups. We provide explicit examples of dual theories for the quiver dual to the Y^{p,q}(CP^2) geometries. We also comment on the string theory derivation of CS quivers dual to massive type IIA geometries.

Toric Fano varieties and Chern-Simons quivers

In favourable cases the low energy dynamics of a stack of M2-branes at a toric Calabi-Yau fourfold singularity can be described by an N=2 supersymmetric Chern-Simons quiver theory, but there still does not exists an "inverse algorithm" going from the toric data of the CY_4 to the CS quiver. We make progress in that direction by deriving CS quiver theories for M2-branes probing cones over a large class of geometries Ypq(B_4), which are S^3/Z_p bundles over toric Fano varieties B_4. We rely on the type IIA understanding of CS quivers, giving a firm string theory footing to our CS theories. In particular we give a derivation of some previously conjectured CS quivers in the case B_4= CP^1*CP^1, as field theories dual to M-theory backgrounds with nontrivial torsion G_4 fluxes.

Quantum moduli space of Chern-Simons quivers, wrapped D6-branes and AdS4/CFT3

We study the quantum moduli space of N=2 Chern-Simons quivers with generic ranks and CS levels, proving along the way exact formulas for the charges of bare monopole operators. We then derive N=2 Chern-Simons quiver theories dual to AdS_4 x Y^{p,q}(CP2) M-theory backgrounds, for the whole family of Sasaki-Einstein seven-manifolds and for any value of the torsion G_4 flux. The derivation of the gauge theories relies on the reduction to type IIA string theory, in which M2-branes become D2-branes while the conical geometry maps to RR flux and D6-branes wrapped on compact four-cycles. M5-branes on torsion cycles map to flux and wrapped D4-branes. The moduli space of the quiver is shown to contain the corresponding CY_4 cone and all its crepant resolutions.

Chiral flavors and M2-branes at toric CY4 singularities

We extend the stringy derivation of N=2 AdS4/CFT3 dualities to cases where the M-theory circle degenerates at complex codimension-two submanifolds of a toric conical CY4. The type IIA backgrounds include D6-branes, and the dual N=2 quiver gauge theories contain chiral flavors. We provide a general recipe to derive the geometric moduli space of flavored versions of Abelian toric quiver gauge theories. The CY4 cone is reproduced thanks to a non-trivial quantum F-term relation between diagonal monopole operators and bifundamental fields. We find new field theory duals to many geometries, including Q111.

On Stable Non-Supersymmetric Vacua at the Bottom of Cascading Theories

We consider a wide class of cascading gauge theories which usually lead to runaway behaviour in the IR, and discuss possible deformations of the superpotential at the bottom of the cascade which stabilize the runaway direction and provide stable non-supersymmetric vacua. The models we find may allow for a weakly coupled supergravity analysis of dynamical supersymmetric breaking in the context of the gauge/string correspondence.
