On the Poisson relation for compact Lie groups

Intuition drawn from quantum mechanics and geometric optics raises the following long-standing question: can the length spectrum of a closed Riemannian manifold be recovered from its Laplace spectrum? The Poisson relation states that for any closed Riemannian manifold $(M,g)$ the singular support of the trace of its wave group---a spectrally determined tempered distribution---is contained in the set consisting of $\pm τ$, where $τ$ is the length of a smoothly closed geodesic in $(M,g)$. Therefore, in cases where the Poisson relation is an equality, we obtain a method for retrieving the length spectrum of a manifold from its Laplace spectrum. The Poisson relation is known to be an equality for sufficiently "bumpy" Riemannian manifolds and there are no known counterexamples. We demonstrate that the Poisson relation is an equality for a compact Lie group equipped with a generic bi-invariant metric. Consequently, the length spectrum of a generic bi-invariant metric (and the rank of its underlying Lie group) can be recovered from its Laplace spectrum. Furthermore, we exhibit a substantial collection $\mathscr{G}$ of compact Lie groups---including those that are either tori, simple, simply-connected, or products thereof---with the property that for each group $U \in \mathscr{G}$ the Laplace spectrum of any bi-invariant metric $g$ carried by $U$ encodes the length spectrum of $g$ and the rank of $U$. The preceding statements are special cases of results concerning compact globally symmetric spaces for which the semi-simple part of the universal cover is split-rank. The manifolds considered herein join a short list of families of non-"bumpy" Riemannian manifolds for which the Poisson relation is known to be an equality.

Constructing metrics on a $2$-torus with a partially prescribed stable norm

A result of Bangert states that the stable norm associated to any Riemannian metric on the $2$-torus $T^2$ is strictly convex. We demonstrate that the space of stable norms associated to metrics on $T^2$ forms a proper dense subset of the space of strictly convex norms on $\R^2$. In particular, given a strictly convex norm $\Norm_\infty$ on $\R^2$ we construct a sequence $<\Norm_j >_{j=1}^{\infty}$ of stable norms that converge to $\Norm_\infty$ in the topology of compact convergence and have the property that for each $r > 0$ there is an $N \equiv N(r)$ such that $\Norm_j$ agrees with $\Norm_\infty$ on $\Z^2 \cap \{(a,b) : a^2 + b^2 \leq r \}$ for all $j \geq N$. Using this result, we are able to derive results on multiplicities which arise in the minimum length spectrum of $2$-tori and in the simple length spectrum of hyperbolic tori.

Isospectral surfaces with distinct covering spectra via Cayley Graphs

The covering spectrum is a geometric invariant of a Riemannian manifold, more generally of a metric space, that measures the size of its one-dimensional holes by isolating a portion of the length spectrum. In a previous paper we demonstrated that the covering spectrum is not a spectral invariant of a manifold in dimensions three and higher. In this article we give an example of two isospectral Cayley graphs that admit length space structures with distinct covering spectra. From this we deduce the existence of infinitely many pairs of Sunada-isospectral surfaces with unequal covering spectra.

Spectral isolation of bi-invariant metrics on compact Lie groups

We show that a bi-invariant metric on a compact connected Lie group $G$ is spectrally isolated within the class of left-invariant metrics. In fact, we prove that given a bi-invariant metric $g_0$ on $G$ there is a positive integer $N$ such that, within a neighborhood of $g_0$ in the class of left-invariant metrics of at most the same volume, $g_0$ is uniquely determined by the first $N$ distinct non-zero eigenvalues of its Laplacian (ignoring multiplicities). In the case where $G$ is simple, $N$ can be chosen to be two.

Sunada's method and the covering spectrum

In 2004, Sormani and Wei introduced the covering spectrum: a geometric invariant that isolates part of the length spectrum of a Riemannian manifold. In their paper they observed that certain Sunada isospectral manifolds share the same covering spectrum, thus raising the question of whether the covering spectrum is a spectral invariant. In the present paper we describe a group theoretic condition under which Sunada's method gives manifolds with identical covering spectra. When the group theoretic condition of our method is not met, we are able to construct Sunada isospectral manifolds with distinct covering spectra in dimension 3 and higher. Hence, the covering spectrum is not a spectral invariant. The main geometric ingredient of the proof has an interpretation as the minimum-marked-length-spectrum analogue of Colin de Verdière's classical result on constructing metrics where the first $k$ eigenvalues of the Laplace spectrum have been prescribed.
