Disorder, critical currents, and vortex pinning energies in isovalently substituted BaFe$_{2}$(As$_{1-x}$P$_{x}$)$_{2}$

We present a comprehensive overview of vortex pinning in single crystals of the isovalently substituted iron-based superconductor BaFe$_{2}$(As$_{1-x}$P$_{x}$)$_{2}$, a material that qualifies as an archetypical clean superconductor, containing only sparse strong point-like pins [in the sense of C.J. van der Beek {\em et al.}, Phys. Rev. B {\bf 66}, 024523 (2002)]. Widely varying critical current values for nominally similar compositions show that flux pinning is of extrinsic origin. Vortex configurations, imaged using the Bitter decoration method, show less density fluctuations than those previously observed in charge-doped Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_{x}$)$_{2}$As$_{2}$ single crystals. Analysis reveals that the pinning force and -energy distributions depend on the P-content $x$. However, they are always much narrower than in Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_{x}$)$_{2}$As$_{2}$, a result that is attributed to the weaker temperature dependence of the superfluid density on approaching $T_{c}$ in BaFe$_{2}$(As$_{1-x}$P$_{x}$)$_{2}$. Critical current density measurements and pinning force distributions independently yield a mean distance between effective pinning centers $\bar{\mathcal L} \sim 90$ nm, increasing with increasing P-content $x$. This evolution can be understood as being the consequence of the P-dependence of the London penetration depth. Further salient features are a wide vortex free "Meissner belt", observed at the edge of overdoped crystals, and characteristic chain-like vortex arrangements, observed at all levels of P-substitution.

Imaging flux distributions around superconductors: Geometrical susceptibility in the Meissner state

Experiment and analytical calculations show that the demagnetizing field of a superconductor is a sensitive probe of quantities otherwise difficult to measure, such as the sample-probe distance in flux-density imaging experiments, and the field of first flux penetration Hp. In particular, the ratio of the maximum field measured above the superconductor edge and the applied field can be determined unambiguously so as to define a linear "geometric" susceptibility. The evolution of this susceptibility with field depends on the regime of flux penetration, and can be used as a means to determine Hp and the effect of a parallel field component in magneto-optical imaging experiments.

Anisotropy of strong pinning in multi-band superconductors

The field-angular dependence and anisotropy of the critical current density in iron-based superconductors is evaluated using a phenomenological approach featuring distinct anisotropy factors for the penetration depth and the coherence length. Both the weak collective pinning limit, and the strong pinning limit relevant for iron-based superconductors at low magnetic fields are considered. It is found that in the more anisotropic materials, such as SmFeAsO and NdFeAsO, the field-angular dependence is completely dominated by the coherence-length (upper-critical field) anisotropy, thereby explaining recent results on the critical current in these materials. In less anisotropic superconductors, strong pinning can lead to an apparent inversion of the anisotropy. Finally, it is shown that, under all circumstances, the ratio of c-axis and ab-plane critical current densities for magnetic field along the ab-plane directly yields the coherence length anisotropy factor εξ.

Electron irradiation of Co, Ni, and P-doped BaFe2As2 - type iron-based superconductors

High energy electron irradiation is used to controllably introduce atomic-scale point defects into single crystalline Ba(Fe_1-xCo_x)_2As_2, Ba(Fe_1-xNi_x)_2As_2, and BaFe_2(As_1-xP_x)_2. The appearance of the collective pinning contribution to the critical current density in BaFe_2(As_1-xP_x)_2, and the magnitude of its enhancement in Ba(Fe_1-xCo_x)_2As_2, conform with the hypothesis of quasi-particle scattering by Fe vacancies created by the irradiation. Whereas the insignificant modification of the temperature dependence of the superfluid density in Ba(Fe_1-xCo_x)_2As_2 and Ba(Fe_1-xNi_x)_2As_2 points to important native disorder present before the irradiation, the critical temperatures of these materials undergo a suppression equivalent to that observed in the much cleaner BaFe_2(As_1-xP_x)_2. This lends credence to the hypothesis of line nodes of the order parameter (at finite k_{z}) in the former two materials.

Microwave heating-induced DC magnetic flux penetration in YBa$_{2}$Cu$_{3}$O$_{7-δ}$ superconducting thin films

The magneto-optical imaging technique is used to visualize the penetration of the magnetic induction in YBa$_{2}$Cu$_{3}$O$_{7-δ}$ thin films during surface resistance measurements. The in-situ surface resistance measurements were performed at 7 GHz using the dielectric resonator method. When only the microwave magnetic field $H_{rf}$ is applied to the superconductor, no $H_{rf}$-induced vortex penetration is observed, even at high rf power. In contrast, in the presence of a constant magnetic field superimposed on $H_{rf}$ we observe a progression of the flux front as $H_{rf}$ is increased. A local thermometry method based on the measurement of the resonant frequency of the dielectric resonator placed on the YBa$_{2}$Cu$_{3}$O$_{7-δ}$ thin film shows that the $H_{rf}$--induced flux penetration is due to the increase of the film temperature.

Vortex creep and critical current densities in superconducting (Ba,K)Fe$_{2}$As$_{2}$ single crystals

The surprisingly rapid relaxation of the sustainable current density in the critical state of single crystalline Ba$_{1-x}$K$_{x}$Fe$_{2}$As$_{2}$ is investigated for magnetic fields oriented parallel to the c-axis and to the $ab$--plane respectively. Due to the inadequacy of standard analysis procedures developed for flux creep in the high temperature superconducting cuprates, we develop a simple, straightforward data treatment technique that reveals the creep mechanism and the creep exponent $μ$. At low magnetic fields, below the second magnetization peak, $μ$ varies only slightly as function of temperature and magnetic flux density $B$. From the data, we determine the temperature- and field dependence of the effective activation barrier for creep. At low temperatures, the measured current density approaches the zero--temperature critical current density (in the absence of creep) to within a factor 2, thus lending credence to earlier conclusions drawn with respect to the pinning mechanism. The comparable values of the experimental screening current density and the zero-temperature critical current density reveals the limited usefulness of the widely used "interpolation formula".

Vortex pinning : a probe for nanoscale disorder in iron-based superconductors

The pinning of quantized flux lines, or vortices, in the mixed state is used to quantify the effect of impurities in iron-based superconductors (IBS). Disorder at two length scales is relevant in these materials. Strong flux pinning resulting from nm-scale heterogeneity of the superconducting properties leads to the very disordered vortex ensembles observed in the IBS, and to the pronounced maximum in the critical current density jc at low magnetic fields. Disorder at the atomic scale, most likely induced by the dopant atoms, leads to "weak collective pinning" and a magnetic field-independent contribution jcoll. The latter allows one to estimate quasi-particle scattering rates.

Charge doping-induced quasiparticle scattering in iron-pnictide superconductors as probed by vortex pinning

Charge doping of iron-pnictide superconductors leads to collective pinning of flux vortices, whereas isovalent doping does not. Moreover, flux pinning in the charge-doped compounds is consistently described by the mean-free path fluctuations introduced by the dopant atoms, allowing for the extraction of the elastic quasiparticle scattering rate. The absence of scattering by dopant atoms in isovalently doped BaFe$_{2}$(As$_{1-x}$P$_{x}$)$_{2}$ is consistent with the observation of a linear temperature dependence of the low-temperature penetration depth in this material.

Shape- and orientation-dependence of surface barriers in single crystalline d-wave Bi_2Sr_2CaCu_2O_8+delta

Magneto-optical imaging and Hall-probe array magnetometry are used to measure the field of first flux entry, H_p, into the same Bi_2Sr_2CaCu_2O_8+delta single crystal cut to different crystal thickness-to-width ratios (d/w), and for two angles alpha between the edges and the principal in-plane crystalline (a,b) axes. At all temperatures, the variation with aspect ratio of H_p is qualitatively well described by calculations for the so-called geometric barrier [E.H. Brandt, Phys. Rev. B 60, 11939 (1999)]. However, the magnitude of H_p is strongly enhanced due to the square shape of the crystal. In the intermediate temperature regime (T < ~ 50 K) in which the Bean-Livingston barrier limits vortex entry, there is some evidence for a tiny crystal-orientation dependent enhancement when the sample edges are at an angle of 45 deg; with respect to the crystalline axes, rather than parallel to them.

Joule heating and high frequency nonlinear effects in the surface impedance of high Tc superconductors

Using the dielectric resonator method, we have investigated nonlinearities in the surface impedance Zs = Rs + jXs of YBa2Cu3O7 thin films at 10 GHz as function of the incident microwave power level and temperature. The use of a rutile dielectric resonator allows us to measure the precise temperature of the films. We conclusively show that the usually observed increase of the surface resistance of YBa2Cu3O7 thin film as function of microwave power is due to local heating.
