In "A survey on the Turaev genus of knots," Champanerkar and Kofman propose several open questions. The first asks whether the polynomial whose coefficients count the number of quasi-trees of the all-A ribbon graph obtained from a diagram with minimal Turaev genus is an invariant of the knot. We answer negatively by showing a counterexample obtained from the two diagrams of $8_{21}$ on the KnotAtlas and KnotScape.
We describe a correspondence between Turaev surfaces of link diagrams on $S^2\subset S^3$ and special Heegaard diagrams for $S^3$ adapted to links.
We show that the head and tail functions of the colored Jones polynomial of adequate links are the product of head and tail functions of the colored Jones polynomial of alternating links that can be read-off an adequate diagram of the link. We apply this to strengthen a theorem of Kalfagianni, Futer and Purcell on the fiberedness of adequate links.
Every link in R^3 can be represented by a one-vertex ribbon graph. We prove a Markov type theorem on this subset of link diagrams.
We study the head and tail of the colored Jones polynomial while focusing mainly on alternating links. Various ways to compute the colored Jones polynomial for a given link give rise to combinatorial identities for those power series. We further show that the head and tail functions only depend on the reduced checkerboard graphs of the knot diagram. Moreover the class of head and tail functions of prime alternating links forms a monoid.
We investigate the coefficients of the highest and lowest terms (also called the head and the tail) of the colored Jones polynomial and show that they stabilize for alternating links and for adequate links. To do this we apply techniques from skein theory.
Using the Huynh and Le quantum determinant description of the colored Jones polynomial, we construct a new combinatorial description of the colored Jones polynomial in terms of walks along a braid. We then use this description to show that for a knot which is the closure of a positive braid, the first N coefficients of the N-th colored Jones polynomial are trivial.
