We completely describe inhomogeneous properly embedded almost symmetric submanifolds of Euclidean space as certain unions of parallel symmetric submanifolds of the ambient Euclidean space.
In this short survey, we show how two (classes of) known examples of inhomogeneous, curvature homogeneous Riemannian manifolds with nontrivial $κ$-nullity can be seen as deformations of homogeneous metrics along the vertical distribution of an integrable Riemannian submersion. We also pose two open questions.
We consider Riemannian $n$-manifolds $M$ with nontrivial $κ$-nullity "distribution" of the curvature tensor $R$, namely, the variable rank distribution of tangent subspaces to $M$ where $R$ coincides with the curvature tensor of a space of constant curvature $κ$ ($κ\in\mathbb R$) is nontrivial. We obtain classification theorems under diferent additional assumptions, in terms of low nullity/conullity, controlled scalar curvature or existence of quotients of finite volume. We prove new results, but also revisit previous ones.
We classify contact manifolds $(M,\mathcal D)$ which are homogeneous under a connected semisimple Lie group $G$, and symmetric in the sense that there exists a contactomorphism of $(M,\mathcal D)$ normalizing $G$, fixing a point $o$ in $M$ and restricting to minus identity along $\mathcal D_o$.
We investigate orbit spaces of isometric actions on unit spheres and find a universal upper bound for the infimum of their curvatures.
We complete the classification, initiated by the second named author, of homogeneous singular Riemannian foliations of spheres that are lifts of foliations produced from Clifford systems.
We classify irreducible polar foliations of codimension $q$ on quaternionic projective spaces $\mathbb H P^n$, for all $(n,q)\neq(7,1)$. We prove that all irreducible polar foliations of any codimension (resp. of codimension one) on $\mathbb H P^n$ are homogeneous if and only if $n+1$ is a prime number (resp. $n$ is even or $n=1$). This shows the existence of inhomogeneous examples of codimension one and higher.
For any irreducible compact homogeneous Kähler manifold, we classify the compact tight Lagrangian submanifolds which have the Z_2-homology of a sphere.
We investigate orthogonal representations of compact Lie groups from the point of view of their quotient spaces, considered as metric spaces. We study metric spaces which are simultaneously quotients of different representations and investigate properties of the corresponding representations. We obtain some structural results and apply them to study irreducible representations of small copolarity. As an important tool, we classify all irreducible representations of connected groups with cohomogeneity four or five.
We study isoparametric submanifolds of rank at least two in a separable Hilbert space, which are known to be homogeneous by a result of Heintze and Liu, and associate to such a submanifold M and a point x in M a canonical homogeneous structure (a certain bilinear map on the tangent space). We prove that the homogeneous structure together with the second fundamental form encodes all the information about M, and deduce from this the rigidity result that M is completely determined by the second fundamental form and its covariant derivative, thereby making such submanifolds accessible to classification. As an essential step, we show that the one-parameter groups of isometries constructed by Heintze and Liu to prove their homogeneity induce smooth and hence everywhere defined Killing fields, implying the continuity of the homogeneous structure. Here an important tool is the introduction of affine root systems of isoparametric submanifolds.
We classify irreducible representations of connected compact Lie groups whose orbit space is isometric to the orbit space of a representation of a finite extension of (positive dimensional) toric group. They turn out to be exactly the non-polar irreducible representations preserving an isoparametric submanifold and acting with cohomogeneity one on it.
We consider a generalized discriminant associated to a symmetric space which generalizes the discriminant of real symmetric matrices, and note that it can be written as a sum of squares of real polynomials. A method to estimate the minimum number of squares required to represent the discrimininant is developed and applied in examples.
A singular riemannian foliation F on a complete riemannian manifold M is said to admit sections if each regular point of M is contained in a complete totally geodesic immersed submanifold (a section) that meets every leaf of F orthogonally and whose dimension is the codimension of the regular leaves of F. We prove that the algebra of basic forms of M relative to F is isomorphic to the algebra of those differential forms on a section that are invariant under the generalized Weyl pseudogroup of this section. This extends a result of Michor for polar actions. It follows from this result that the algebra of basic function is finitely generated if the sections are compact. We also prove that the leaves of F coincide with the level sets of a transnormal map (generalization of isoparametric map) if M is simply connected, the sections are flat and the leaves of F are compact. This result extends previous results due to Carter and West, Terng, and Heintze, Liu and Olmos.
