Muonic vs electronic dark forces: a complete EFT treatment for atomic spectroscopy

Precision atomic spectroscopy provides a solid model independent bound on the existence of new dark forces among the atomic constituents. We focus on the keV-GeV region investigating the sensitivity to such dark sectors of the recent measurements on muonic atoms at PSI. To this end we develop for the first time, the effective field theory that describes the leading effect of a new (pseudo-)vector or a (pseudo-)scalar particle of any mass at atomic energies. We identify in the Lamb Shift measurement in muonic deuterium ($μ$D) and the $2s$ Hyperfine Splitting (HFS) in muonic hydrogen ($μ$H) the most promising measurements to probe respectively spin-independent and spin-dependent new forces. Furthermore, we evaluate the expression of the vector force HFS finding that a future measurement of the $2s$ HFS in regular hydrogen could provide the strongest atomic bound for such a force for masses above 100 MeV.

The Lamb shift in muonic hydrogen and the proton radius from effective field theories

We comprehensively analyse the theoretical prediction for the Lamb shift in muonic hydrogen, and the associated determination of the proton radius. We use effective field theories. This allows us to relate the proton radius with well-defined objects in quantum field theory, eliminating unnecessary model dependence. The use of effective field theories also helps us to organize the computation so that we can clearly state the parametric accuracy of the result. In this paper we review all (and check several of) the contributions to the energy shift of order $α^5$, as well as those that scale like $α^6\times$logarithms in the context of non-relativistic effective field theories of QED.

The two-photon exchange contribution to muonic hydrogen from chiral perturbation theory

We compute the spin-dependent and spin-independent structure functions of the forward virtual-photon Compton tensor of the proton at one loop using heavy baryon effective theory including the Delta particle. We compare with previous results when existing. Using these results we obtain the leading hadronic contributions, associated to the pion and Delta particles, to the Wilson coefficients of the lepton-proton four fermion operators in NRQED. The spin-independent coefficient yields a pure prediction for the two-photon exchange contribution to the muonic hydrogen Lamb shift, $ΔE_{\rm TPE}(π\&Δ)=34(13)$ $μ$eV. We also compute the charge, $\langle r^n \rangle$, and Zemach, $\langle r^n \rangle_{(2)}$, moments for $n \geq 3$. Finally, we discuss the spin-dependent case, for which we compute the difference between the four-fermion Wilson coefficients relevant for hydrogen and muonic hydrogen.

Model independent determination of the muonic hydrogen Lamb shift and proton radius

We obtain a model independent expression for the muonic hydrogen Lamb shift. This expression includes the leading logarithmic ${\cal O}(m_μα^6)$ terms, as well as the leading ${\cal O}(m_μα^5 \frac{m_μ^2}{m_ρ^2})$ hadronic effects. The latter are controlled by the chiral theory, which allows for their model independent determination. In this paper we give the missing piece for their complete expression including the pion and Delta particles. Out of this analysis and the experimental measurement of the muonic hydrogen Lamb shift we determine the electromagnetic proton radius: $r_p=0.8412(15)$ fm. This number is at 6.8$σ$ variance with respect to the CODATA value. The accuracy of our result is limited by uncomputed terms of ${\cal O}(m_μα^5\frac{m_μ^3}{m_ρ^3},m_μα^6)$. This parametric control of the uncertainties allows us to obtain a model independent determination of the error, which is dominated by hadronic effects.

Neutrino masses in RPV models with two pairs of Higgs doublets

We study the generation of neutrino masses and mixing in supersymmetric R-parity violating models containing two pairs of Higgs doublets. In these models, new RPV terms $\hat H_{D_1} \hat H_{D_2} \hat E$ arise in the superpotential, as well as new soft terms. Such terms give new contributions to neutrino masses. We identify the different parameters and suppression/enhancement factors that control each of these contributions. At tree level, just like in the MSSM, only one neutrino acquires a mass due to neutrino-neutralino mixing. There are no new one loop effects. We study the two loop contributions and find the conditions under which they can be important.

The muonic hydrogen Lamb shift and the proton radius

We obtain a model independent expression for the muonic hydrogen Lamb shift up to $\mathcal O (m_μα^6, m_μα^5 \frac{m_μ^2}{m_ρ^2})$. The hadronic effects are controlled by the chiral theory, which allows for their model independent determination. We give their complete expression including the pion and Delta particles. Out of this analysis and the experimental measurement of the muonic hydrogen Lamb shift we determine the electromagnetic proton radius: $r_p$=0.8412(15) fm. This number is at 6.8$σ$ variance with respect to the CODATA value. The parametric control of the uncertainties allows us to obtain a model independent determination of the error, which is dominated by hadronic effects.
