A convexity-preserving and perimeter-decreasing parametric finite element method for the area-preserving curve shortening flow

We propose and analyze a semi-discrete parametric finite element scheme for solving the area-preserving curve shortening flow. The scheme is based on Dziuk's approach (SIAM J. Numer. Anal. 36(6): 1808-1830, 1999) for the anisotropic curve shortening flow. We prove that the scheme preserves two fundamental geometric structures of the flow with an initially convex curve: (i) the convexity-preserving property, and (ii) the perimeter-decreasing property. To the best of our knowledge, the convexity-preserving property of numerical schemes which approximate the flow is rigorously proved for the first time. Furthermore, the error estimate of the semi-discrete scheme is established, and numerical results are provided to demonstrate the structure-preserving properties as well as the accuracy of the scheme.

A semi-discrete first-order low regularity exponential integrator for the "good" Boussinesq equation without loss of regularity

In this paper, we propose a semi-discrete first-order low regularity exponential-type integrator (LREI) for the ``good" Boussinesq equation. It is shown that the method is convergent linearly in the space HrH^r for solutions belonging to Hr+p(r)H^{r+p(r)} where 0≤p(r)≤10\le p(r)\le 1 is non-increasing with respect to rr, which means less additional derivatives might be needed when the numerical solution is measured in a more regular space. Particularly, the LREI presents the first-order accuracy in HrH^{r} with no assumptions of additional derivatives when r>5/2r>5/2. This is the first time to propose a low regularity method which achieves the optimal first-order accuracy without loss of regularity for the GB equation. The convergence is confirmed by extensive numerical experiments.

Various variational approximations of quantum dynamics

We investigate variational principles for the approximation of quantum dynamics that apply for approximation manifolds that do not have complex linear tangent spaces. The first one, dating back to McLachlan (1964) minimizes the residuum of the time-dependent Schrödinger equation, while the second one, originating from the lecture notes of Kramer--Saraceno (1981), imposes the stationarity of an action functional. We characterize both principles in terms of metric and a symplectic orthogonality conditions, consider their conservation properties, and derive an elementary a-posteriori error estimate. As an application, we revisit the time-dependent Hartree approximation and frozen Gaussian wave packets.
