An Enhanced Leakage-Based Precoding Scheme for Multi-User Multi-Layer MIMO Systems

In this paper, we propose an enhanced leakage-based precoding scheme, i.e., layer signal to leakage plus noise ratio (layer SLNR) scheme, for multi-user multi-layer MIMO systems. Specifically, the layer SLNR scheme incorporates the MIMO receiver structure into the precoder design procedure, which makes the formulation of signal power and interference / leakage power more accurate. Besides, the layer SLNR scheme not only takes into account the inter-layer interference from different users, but also takes care of the inter-layer interference from the same user which is usually assumed to be zero in previous studies. As a result, the proposed layer SLNR scheme produces a good balance between the layer signal power and layer interference power in a multi-user multi-layer MIMO system, therefore achieves better system performance. The effectiveness and superiority of the proposed layer SLNR scheme are validated via simulations.

Over-the-air Signaling in Cellular Networks: An Overview

To improve the capacity and coverage of current cellular networks, many advanced technologies such as massive MIMO, inter-cell coordination, small cells, device-to-device communications, and so on, are under studying. Many proposed techniques have been shown to offer significant performance improvement. Thus, the enabler of those techniques is of great importance. That is the necessary signaling which guarantee the operation of those techniques. The design and transmission of those signaling, especially the over-the-air (OTA) signaling, is challenging. In this article, we provide an overview of the OTA signaling in cellular networks to provide insights on the design of OTA signaling. Specifically, we first give a brief introduction of the OTA signaling in long term evolution (LTE), and then we discuss the challenges and requirements in designing the OTA signaling in cellular networks in detail. To better understand the OTA signaling, we give two important classifications of OTA signaling and address their properties and applications. Finally, we propose a signature-based signaling named (single-tone signaling, STS) which can be used for inter-cell OTA signaling and is especially useful and robust in multi-signal scenario. Simulation results are given to compare the detection performance of different OTA signaling.

Coded Single-Tone Signaling for Resource Coordination and Interference Management in Femtocell Networks

Resource coordination and interference management is the key to achieving the benefits of femtocell networks. Over-the-air signaling is one of the most effective means for distributed dynamic resource coordination and interference management. However, the design of this type of signal is challenging. In this letter, we address the challenges and propose an effective solution, referred to as coded single-tone signaling (STS). The proposed coded STS scheme possesses certain highly desirable properties, such as no dedicated resource requirement (no overhead), no near-and-far effect, no inter-signal interference (no multi-user interference), low peak-to-average power ratio (deep coverage). In addition, the proposed coded STS can fully exploit frequency diversity and provides a means for high quality wideband channel estimation. The coded STS design is demonstrated through a concrete numerical example. Performance of the proposed coded STS is evaluated through simulations.

Dynamic Resource Coordination and Interference Management for Femtocell Networks

Femtocell is emerging as a key technology to secure the coverage and capacity in indoor environments. However the deployment of a new femtocell layer may originate undesired interference to the whole system. This paper investigates spectrum resource coordination and interference management for the femtocell networks. A resource coordination scheme based on broadcasting resource coordination request messages by the femto mobile is proposed to reduce the system interference.
