Engineering the strain and interlayer excitons of 2D materials via lithographically engraved hexagonal boron nitride

Strain engineering has quickly emerged as a viable option to modify the electronic, optical and magnetic properties of 2D materials. However, it remains challenging to arbitrarily control the strain. Here we show that by creating atomically-flat surface nanostructures in hexagonal boron nitride, we achieve an arbitrary on-chip control of both the strain distribution and magnitude on high-quality molybdenum disulfide. The phonon and exciton emissions are shown to vary in accordance with our strain field designs, enabling us to write and draw any photoluminescence color image in a single chip. Moreover, our strain engineering offers a powerful means to significantly and controllably alter the strengths and energies of interlayer excitons at room temperature. This method can be easily extended to other material systems and offers a promise for functional excitonic devices.

Configuration- and concentration-dependent electronic properties of hydrogenated graphene

The electronic properties of hydrogenated graphenes are investigated with the first-principles calculations. Geometric structures, energy bands, charge distributions, and density of states (DOS) strongly depend on the different configurations and concentrations of hydrogen adatoms. Among three types of optimized periodical configurations, only in the zigzag systems the band gaps can be remarkably modulated by H-concentrations. There exist middle-gap semiconductors, narrow-gap semiconductors, and gapless systems. The band structures exhibit the rich features, including the destruction or recovery of the Dirac-cone structure, newly formed critical points, weakly dispersive bands, and (C,H)-related partially flat bands. The orbital-projected DOS are evidenced by the low-energy prominent peaks, delta-function-like peaks, discontinuous shoulders, and logarithmically divergent peaks. The DOS and spatial charge distributions clearly indicate that the critical bondings in C-C and C-H is responsible for the diversified properties.

Novel Magnetic Quantization of sp$^{3}$ Bonding in Monolayer Tinene

A generalized tight-binding model, which is based on the subenvelope functions of the different sublattices, is developed to explore the novel magnetic quantization in monolayer gray tin. The effects due to the $sp^{3}$ bonding, the spin-orbital coupling, the magnetic field and the electric field are simultaneously taken into consideration. The unique magneto-electronic properties lie in two groups of low-lying Landau levels, with different orbital components, localization centers, state degeneracy, spin configurations, and magnetic- and electric-field dependences. The first and second groups mainly come from the $5p_{z}$ and ($5p_{x}$,$5p_{y}$) orbitals, respectively. Their Landau-level splittings are, respectively, induced by the electric field and spin-orbital interactions. The intragroup anti-crossings are only revealed in the former. The unique tinene Landau levels are absent in graphene, silicene and germanene.

Graphene on Au-coated SiOx substrate: Its core-level photoelectron micro-spectroscopy study

The core-level electronic structures of the exfoliated graphene sheets on a Au-coated SiOx substrate have been studied by synchrotron radiation photoelectron spectroscopy (SR-PES) on a micron-scale. The graphene was firstly demonstrated its visibility on the Au-coated SiOx substrate by micro-optical characterization, and then conducted into SR-PES study. Because of the elimination of charging effect, precise C 1s core-level characterization clearly shows graphitic and contaminated carbon states of graphene. Different levels of Au-coating-induced p-type doping on single- and double-layer graphene sheets were also examined in the C 1s core-level shift. The Au-coated SiOx substrate can be treated as a simple but high-throughput platform for in situ studying graphene under further hybridization by PES.
