A novel spectral method for the subdiffusion equation

In this paper, we design and analyze a novel spectral method for the subdiffusion equation. As it has been known, the solutions of this equation are usually singular near the initial time. Consequently, direct application of the traditional high-order numerical methods is inefficient. We try to overcome this difficulty in a novel approach by combining variable transformation techniques with spectral methods. The idea is to first use suitable variable transformation to re-scale the underlying equation, then construct spectral methods for the re-scaled equation. We establish a new variational framework based on the $ψ$-fractional Sobolev spaces. This allows us to prove the well-posedness of the associated variational problem. The proposed spectral method is based on the variational problem and generalized Jacobi polynomials to approximate the re-scaled fractional differential equation. Our theoretical and numerical investigation show that the proposed method is exponentially convergent for general right hand side functions, even though the exact solution has very limited regularity. Implementation details are also provided, along with a series of numerical examples to show the efficiency of the proposed method.

Highly efficient schemes for time fractional Allen-Cahn equation using extended SAV approach

In this paper, we propose and analyze high order efficient schemes for the time fractional Allen-Cahn equation. The proposed schemes are based on the L1 discretization for the time fractional derivative and the extended scalar auxiliary variable (SAV) approach developed very recently to deal with the nonlinear terms in the equation. The main contributions of the paper consist in: 1) constructing first and higher order unconditionally stable schemes for different mesh types, and proving the unconditional stability of the constructed schemes for the uniform mesh; 2) carrying out numerical experiments to verify the efficiency of the schemes and to investigate the coarsening dynamics governed by the time fractional Allen-Cahn equation. Particularly, the influence of the fractional order on the coarsening behavior is carefully examined. Our numerical evidence shows that the proposed schemes are more robust than the existing methods, and their efficiency is less restricted to particular forms of the nonlinear potentials.

A Müntz-Collocation spectral method for weakly singular volterra integral equations

In this paper we propose and analyze a fractional Jacobi-collocation spectral method for the second kind Volterra integral equations (VIEs) with weakly singular kernel $(x-s)^{-μ},0<μ<1$. First we develop a family of fractional Jacobi polynomials, along with basic approximation results for some weighted projection and interpolation operators defined in suitable weighted Sobolev spaces. Then we construct an efficient fractional Jacobi-collocation spectral method for the VIEs using the zeros of the new developed fractional Jacobi polynomial. A detailed convergence analysis is carried out to derive error estimates of the numerical solution in both $L^{\infty}$- and weighted $L^{2}$-norms. The main novelty of the paper is that the proposed method is highly efficient for typical solutions that VIEs usually possess. Precisely, it is proved that the exponential convergence rate can be achieved for solutions which are smooth after the variable change $x\rightarrow x^{1/λ}$ for a suitable real number $λ$. Finally a series of numerical examples are presented to demonstrate the efficiency of the method.

Parallel in time algorithm with spectral-subdomain enhancement for Volterra integral equations

This paper proposes a parallel in time (called also time parareal) method to solve Volterra integral equations of the second kind. The parallel in time approach follows the same spirit as the domain decomposition that consists of breaking the domain of computation into subdomains and solving iteratively the sub-problems in a parallel way. To obtain high order of accuracy, a spectral collocation accuracy enhancement in subdomains will be employed. Our main contributions in this work are two folds: (i) a time parareal method is designed for the integral equations, which to our knowledge is the first of its kind. The new method is an iterative process combining a coarse prediction in the whole domain with fine corrections in subdomains by using spectral approximation, leading to an algorithm of very high accuracy; (ii) a rigorous convergence analysis of the overall method is provided. The numerical experiment confirms that the overall computational cost is considerably reduced while the desired spectral rate of convergence can be obtained.
