Roberge-Weiss transition in Nf=2N_\text{f}=2 QCD with Wilson fermions and Nτ=6N_τ=6

QCD with imaginary chemical potential is free of the sign problem and exhibits a rich phase structure constraining the phase diagram at real chemical potential. We simulate the critical endpoint of the Roberge-Weiss (RW) transition at imaginary chemical potential for Nf=2N_\text{f}=2 QCD on Nτ=6N_τ=6 lattices with standard Wilson fermions. As found on coarser lattices, the RW endpoint is a triple point connecting the deconfinement/chiral transitions in the heavy/light quark mass regions and changes to a second-order endpoint for intermediate masses. These regimes are separated by two tricritical values of the quark mass, which we determine by extracting the critical exponent νν from a systematic finite size scaling analysis of the Binder cumulant of the imaginary part of the Polyakov loop. We are able to explain a previously observed finite size effect afflicting the scaling of the Binder cumulant in the regime of three-phase coexistence. Compared to Nτ=4N_τ=4 lattices, the tricritical masses are shifted towards smaller values. Exploratory results on Nτ=8N_τ=8 as well as comparison with staggered simulations suggest that significantly finer lattices are needed before a continuum extrapolation becomes feasible.

The Nf=2N_f=2 QCD chiral phase transition with Wilson fermions at zero and imaginary chemical potential

The order of the thermal phase transition in the chiral limit of Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD) with two dynamical flavors of quarks is a long-standing issue and still not known in the continuum limit. Whether the transition is first or second order has important implications for the QCD phase diagram and the existence of a critical endpoint at finite densities. We follow a recently proposed approach to explicitly determine the region of first order chiral transitions at imaginary chemical potential, where it is large enough to be simulated, and extrapolate it to zero chemical potential with known critical exponents. Using unimproved Wilson fermions on coarse Nt=4N_t=4 lattices, the first order region turns out to be so large that no extrapolation is necessary. The critical pion mass mπc≈560m_π^c\approx 560 MeV is by nearly a factor 10 larger than the corresponding one using staggered fermions. Our results are in line with investigations of three-flavour QCD using improved Wilson fermions and indicate that the systematic error on the two-flavour chiral transition is still of order 100\%.

The Nf=2N_f= 2 chiral phase transition from imaginary chemical potential with Wilson Fermions

The order of the thermal transition in the chiral limit of QCD with two dynamical flavours of quarks is a long-standing issue. Still, it is not definitely known whether the transition is of first or second order in the continuum limit. Which of the two scenarios is realized has important implications for the QCD phase diagram and the existence of a critical endpoint at finite densities. Settling this issue by simulating at successively decreased pion mass was not conclusive yet. Recently, an alternative approach was proposed, extrapolating the first order phase transition found at imaginary chemical potential to zero chemical potential with known exponents, which are induced by the Roberge-Weiss symmetry. For staggered fermions on Nt=4N_t=4 lattices, this results in a first order transition in the chiral limit. Here we report of Nt=4N_t=4 simulations with Wilson fermions, where the first order region is found to be large.

The nature of the Roberge-Weiss Transition in Nf=2N_f=2 QCD with Wilson Fermions on Nτ=6N_τ=6 lattices

The finite temperature chiral and deconfinement phase transitions at zero density for light and heavy quarks, respectively, have analytic continuations to imaginary chemical potential. At some critical imaginary chemical potential, they meet the Roberge-Weiss transition between adjacent Z(3)Z(3) sectors. For light and heavy quarks, where the chiral and deconfinement transitions are first order, the transition lines meet in a triple point. For intermediate masses chiral or deconfinement transitions are crossover and the Roberge-Weiss transition ends in a second order point. At the boundary between these regimes the junction is a tricritical point, as shown in studies with Nf=2,3N_f=2,3 flavors of staggered and Wilson quarks on Nτ=4N_τ=4 lattices. Employing finite size scaling we investigate the nature of this point as a function of quark mass for Nf=2N_f=2 flavors of Wilson fermions with a temporal lattice extent of Nτ=6N_τ=6. In particular we are interested in the change of the location of tricritical points compared to our ealier study on Nτ=4N_τ=4.

The nature of the Roberge-Weiss transition in Nf=2N_f=2 QCD with Wilson fermions

At imaginary values of the quark chemical potential μμ, Quantum Chromodynamics shows an interesting phase structure due to an exact center, or Roberge-Weiss (RW), symmetry. This can be used to constrain QCD at real μμ, where the sign problem prevents Monte Carlo simulations of the lattice theory. In previous studies of this region with staggered fermions it was found that the RW endpoint, where the center transition changes from first-order to a crossover, depends non-trivially on the quark mass: for high and low masses, it is a triple point connecting to the deconfinement and chiral transitions, respectively, changing to a second-order endpoint for intermediate mass values. These parameter regions are separated by tricritical points. Here we present a confirmation of these findings using Wilson fermions on Nτ=4N_τ=4 lattices. In addition, our results provide a successful quantitative check for a heavy quark effective lattice theory at finite density.

Lattice QCD based on OpenCL

We present an OpenCL-based Lattice QCD application using a heatbath algorithm for the pure gauge case and Wilson fermions in the twisted mass formulation. The implementation is platform independent and can be used on AMD or NVIDIA GPUs, as well as on classical CPUs. On the AMD Radeon HD 5870 our double precision dslash implementation performs at 60 GFLOPS over a wide range of lattice sizes. The hybrid Monte-Carlo presented reaches a speedup of four over the reference code running on a server CPU.

Pseudo-Critical Temperature and Thermal Equation of State from Nf=2N_f=2 Twisted Mass Lattice QCD

We report about the current status of our ongoing study of the chiral limit of two-flavor QCD at finite temperature with twisted mass quarks. We estimate the pseudo-critical temperature TcT_c for three values of the pion mass in the range of mPS≃300m_\mathrm{PS} \simeq 300 and 500MeV500 \mathrm{MeV} and discuss different chiral scenarios. Furthermore, we present first preliminary results for the trace anomaly, pressure and energy density. We have studied several discretizations of Euclidean time up to Nτ=12N_τ=12 in order to assess the continuum limit of the trace anomaly. From its interpolation we evaluate the pressure and energy density employing the integral method. Here, we have focussed on two pion masses with mPS≃400m_\mathrm{PS} \simeq 400 and 700MeV700 \mathrm{MeV}.
