Chiral skyrmions of large radius

We study the structure of an axially symmetric magnetic skyrmion in a ferromagnet with the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction. We examine the regime of large skyrmions and we identify rigorously the critical value of the dimensionless parameter at which the skyrmion radius diverges to infinity, while the skyrmion energy converges to zero. This critical value coincides with the expected transition point from the uniform phase, which accommodates the skyrmion as an excited state, to the helical phase, which has negative energy. We give the profile field at the skyrmion core, its outer field, and the intermediate field at the skyrmion domain wall. Moreover, we derive an explicit formula for the leading asymptotic behavior of the energy as well as the leading term and first asymptotic correction for the value of the critical parameter. The key leading to the results is a parity theorem that utilizes exact formulae for the asymptotic behavior of the solutions of the static Landau-Lifshitz equation centered at the skyrmion domain wall. The skyrmion energy is shown to be an odd function of the radius and the dimensionless parameter to be an even function.

The profile of chiral skyrmions of small radius

Chiral skyrmions are stable particle-like solutions of the Landau-Lifshitz equation for ferromagnets with the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interaction, characterized by a topological number. We study the profile of an axially symmetric skyrmion and give exact formulas for the solution of the corresponding far-field and near-field equations, in the asymptotic limit of small DM parameter (alternatively large anisotropy). The matching of these two fields leads to a formula for the skyrmion radius as a function of the DM parameter. The derived solutions show the different length scales which are present in the skyrmion profiles. The picture is thus created of a chiral skyrmion that is born out of a Belavin-Polyakov solution with an infinitesimally small radius, as the DM parameter is increased from zero. The skyrmion retains the Belavin-Polyakov profile over and well-beyond the core before it assumes an exponential decay; the profile of an axially-symmetric Belavin-Polyakov solution of unit degree plays the role of the universal core profile of chiral skyrmions.

Compactness results for static and dynamic chiral skyrmions near the conformal limit

We examine lower order perturbations of the harmonic map prob- lem from $\mathbb{R}^2$ to $\mathbb{S}^2$ including chiral interaction in form of a helicity term that prefers modulation, and a potential term that enables decay to a uniform background state. Energy functionals of this type arise in the context of magnetic systems without inversion symmetry. In the almost conformal regime, where these perturbations are weighted with a small parameter, we examine the existence of relative minimizers in a non-trivial homotopy class, so-called chiral skyrmions, strong compactness of almost minimizers, and their asymptotic limit. Finally we examine dynamic stability and compactness of almost minimizers in the context of the Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation including spin-transfer torques arising from the interaction with an external current.

Vortices in a Stochastic Parabolic Ginzburg-Landau Equation

We consider the variant of a stochastic parabolic Ginzburg-Landau equation that allows for the formation of point defects of the solution. The noise in the equation is multiplicative of the gradient type. We show that the family of the Jacobians associated to the solution is tight on a suitable space of measures. Our main result is the characterization of the limit points of this family. They are concentrated on finite sums of delta measures with integer weights. The singular set of the solution coincides with the points at which the delta measures are centered.

Vortex dynamics in the presence of excess energy for the Landau-Lifschitz-Gilbert equation

We study the Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation for the dynamics of a magnetic vortex system. We present a PDE-based method for proving vortex dynamics that does not rely on strong well-preparedness of the initial data and allows for instantaneous changes in the strength of the gyrovector force due to bubbling events. The main tools are estimates of the Hodge decomposition of the supercurrent and an analysis of the defect measure of weak convergence of the stress energy tensor. Ginzburg-Landau equations with mixed dynamics in the presence of excess energy are also discussed.

Global Solvability of the Cauchy Problem for the Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert Equation in Higher Dimensions

We prove existence, uniqueness and asymptotics of global smooth solutions for the Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation in dimension $n \ge 3$, valid under a smallness condition of initial gradients in the $L^n$ norm. The argument is based on the method of moving frames that produces a covariant complex Ginzburg-Landau equation, and a priori estimates that we obtain by the method of weighted-in-time norms as introduced by Fujita and Kato.
