Gibbsianness of locally thinned random fields

We consider the locally thinned Bernoulli field on $\mathbb Z^d$, which is the lattice version of the Type-I Matérn hardcore process in Euclidean space. It is given as the lattice field of occupation variables, obtained as image of an i.i.d. Bernoulli lattice field with occupation probability $p$, under the map which removes all particles with neighbors, while keeping the isolated particles. We prove that the thinned measure has a Gibbsian representation and provide control on its quasilocal dependence, both in the regime of small $p$, but also in the regime of large $p$, where the thinning transformation changes the Bernoulli measure drastically. Our methods rely on Dobrushin uniqueness criteria, disagreement percolation arguments, and cluster expansions.

Stable and metastable phases for the Curie-Weiss-Potts model in vector-valued fields via singularity theory

We study the metastable minima of the Curie-Weiss Potts model with three states, as a function of the inverse temperature, and for arbitrary vector-valued external fields. Extending the classic work of Ellis/Wang and Wang we use singularity theory to provide the global structure of metastable (or local) minima. In particular, we show that the free energy has up to four local minimizers (some of which may at the same time be global) and describe the bifurcation geometry of their transitions under variation of the parameters.

Dynamical Gibbs-non-Gibbs transitions in lattice Widom-Rowlinson models with hard-core and soft-core interactions

We consider the Widom-Rowlinson model on the lattice $\mathbb{Z}^d$ in two versions, comparing the cases of a hard-core repulsion and of a soft-core repulsion between particles carrying opposite signs. For both versions we investigate their dynamical Gibbs-non-Gibbs transitions under an independent stochastic symmetric spin-flip dynamics. While both models have a similar phase transition in the high-intensity regime in equilibrium, we show that they behave differently under time-evolution: The time-evolved soft-core model is Gibbs for small times and loses the Gibbs property for large enough times. By contrast, the time-evolved hard-core model loses the Gibbs property immediately, and for asymmetric intensities, shows a transition back to the Gibbsian regime at a sharp transition time.

Gibbs-non-Gibbs transition in the fuzzy Potts models with a Kac-type interaction: Closing the Ising gap

We complete the investigation of the Gibbs properties of the fuzzy Potts model on the d-dimensional torus with Kac interaction which was started by Jahnel and one of the authors. As our main result of the present paper, we extend the previous sharpness result of mean-field bounds to cover all possible cases of fuzzy transformations, allowing also for the occurrence of Ising classes. The closing of this previously left open Ising-gap involves an analytical argument showing uniqueness of minimizing profiles for certain non-homogeneous conditional variational problems.

Continuous spin models on annealed generalized random graphs

We study Gibbs distributions of spins taking values in a general compact Polish space, interacting via a pair potential along the edges of a generalized random graph with a given asymptotic weight distribution $P$, obtained by annealing over the random graph distribution. First we prove a variational formula for the corresponding annealed pressure and provide criteria for absence of phase transitions in the general case. We furthermore study classes of models with second order phase transitions which include rotation-invariant models on spheres and models on intervals, and classify their critical exponents. We find critical exponents which are modified relative to the corresponding mean-field values when $P$ becomes too heavy-tailed, in which case they move continuously with the tail-exponent of $P$. For large classes of models they are the same as for the Ising model treated in \cite{DomGiaGibHofPri16}. On the other hand, we provide conditions under which the model is in a different universality class, and construct an explicit example of such a model on the interval.

Gradient Gibbs measures and fuzzy transformations on trees

We study Gibbsian models of unbounded integer-valued spins on trees which possess a symmetry under height-shift. We develop a theory relating boundary laws to gradient Gibbs measures, which applies also in cases where the corresponding Gibbs measures do not exist. Our results extend the classical theory of Zachary beyond the case of normalizable boundary laws, which implies existence of Gibbs measures, to periodic boundary laws. We provide a construction for classes of tree-automorphism invariant gradient Gibbs measures in terms of mixtures of pinned measures, whose marginals to infinite paths on the tree are random walks in a q-periodic environment. Here the mixture measure is the invariant measure of a finite state Markov chain which arises as a mod-q fuzzy transform, and which governs the correlation decay. The construction applies for example to SOS-models and discrete Gaussian models and delivers a large number of gradient Gibbs measures. We also discuss relations of certain gradient Gibbs measures to Potts and Ising models.

A class of non-ergodic probabilistic cellular automata with unique invariant measure and quasi-periodic orbit

We provide an example of a discrete-time Markov process on the three-dimensional infinite integer lattice with Z_q-invariant Bernoulli-increments which has as local state space the cyclic group Z_q. We show that the system has a unique invariant measure, but remarkably possesses an invariant set of measures on which the dynamics is conjugate to an irrational rotation on the continuous sphere S^1. The update mechanism we construct is exponentially well localized on the lattice.

Gibbsian and non-Gibbsian properties of the generalized mean-field fuzzy Potts-model

We analyze the generalized mean-field q-state Potts model which is obtained by replacing the usual quadratic interaction function in the mean-field Hamiltonian by a higher power z. We first prove a generalization of the known limit result for the empirical magnetization vector of Ellis and Wang which shows that in the right parameter regime, the first-order phase-transition persists. Next we turn to the corresponding generalized fuzzy Potts model which is obtained by decomposing the set of the q possible spin-values into 1 < s < q classes and identifying the spins within these classes. In extension of earlier work which treats the quadratic model we prove the following: The fuzzy Potts model with interaction exponent bigger than four (respectively bigger than two and smaller or equal four) is non-Gibbs if and only if its inverse temperature is larger or equal than the critical inverse temperature of the corresponding Potts model with number of spin-labels equal to the size of the smallest class which is greater or equal than two (respectively greater or equal than three.) We also provide a dynamical interpretation considering sequences of fuzzy Potts models which are obtained by increasingly collapsing classes at finitely many times and discuss the possibility of a multiple in- and out of Gibbsianness, depending on the collapsing scheme.

Gibbs-non-Gibbs properties for evolving Ising models on trees

In this paper we study homogeneous Gibbs measures on a Cayley tree, subjected to an infinite-temperature Glauber evolution, and consider their (non-)Gibbsian properties. We show that the intermediate Gibbs state (which in zero field is the free-boundary-condition Gibbs state) behaves different from the plus and the minus state. E.g. at large times, all configurations are bad for the intermediate state, whereas the plus configuration never is bad for the plus state. Moreover, we show that for each state there are two transitions. For the intermediate state there is a transition from a Gibbsian regime to a non-Gibbsian regime where some, but not all configurations are bad, and a second one to a regime where all configurations are bad. For the plus and minus state, the two transitions are from a Gibbsian regime to a non-Gibbsian one and then back to a Gibbsian regime again.

Low-temperature dynamics of the Curie-Weiss Model: Periodic orbits, multiple histories, and loss of Gibbsianness

We consider the Curie-Weiss model at a given initial temperature in vanishing external field evolving under a Glauber spin-flip dynamics corresponding to a possibly different temperature. We study the limiting conditional probabilities and their continuity properties and discuss their set of points of discontinuity (bad points). We provide a complete analysis of the transition between Gibbsian and non-Gibbsian behavior as a function of time, extending earlier work for the case of independent spin-flip dynamics. For initial temperature bigger than one we prove that the time-evolved measure stays Gibbs forever, for any (possibly low) temperature of the dynamics. In the regime of heating to low-temperatures from even lower temperatures, when the initial temperature is smaller than the temperature of the dynamics, and smaller than 1, we prove that the time-evolved measure is Gibbs initially and becomes non-Gibbs after a sharp transition time. We find this regime is further divided into a region where only symmetric bad configurations exist, and a region where this symmetry is broken. In the regime of further cooling from low-temperatures there is always symmetry-breaking in the set of bad configurations. These bad configurations are created by a new mechanism which is related to the occurrence of periodic orbits for the vector field which describes the dynamics of Euler-Lagrange equations for the path large deviation functional for the order parameter. To our knowledge this is the first example of the rigorous study of non-Gibbsian phenomena related to cooling, albeit in a mean-field setup.

Metastates in finite-type mean-field models: visibility, invisibility, and random restoration of symmetry

We consider a general class of disordered mean-field models where both the spin variables and disorder variables take finitely many values. To investigate the size-dependence in the phase-transition regime we construct the metastate describing the probabilities to find a large system close to a particular convex combination of the pure infinite-volume states. We show that, under a non-degeneracy assumption, only pure states are seen, with non-random probability weights for which we derive explicit expressions in terms of interactions and distributions of the disorder variables. We provide a geometric construction distinguishing invisible states (having zero weights) from visible ones. As a further consequence we show that, in the case where precisely two pure states are available, these must necessarily occur with the same weight, even if the model has no obvious symmetry relating the two.

The continuous spin random field model: Ferromagnetic ordering in d>=3

We investigate the Gibbs-measures of ferromagnetically coupled continuous spins in double-well potentials subjected to a random field (our specific example being the $ϕ^4$ theory), showing ferromagnetic ordering in $d\geq 3$ dimensions for weak disorder and large energy barriers. We map the random continuous spin distributions to distributions for an Ising-spin system by means of a single-site coarse-graining method described by local transition kernels. We derive a contour- representation for them with notably positive contour activities and prove their Gibbsianness. This representation is shown to allow for application of the discrete-spin renormalization group developed by Bricmont/Kupiainen implying the result in $d\geq 3$.
