On Echoes in Magnetohydrodynamics with Magnetic Dissipation

We study the long time asymptotic behavior of the inviscid magnetohydrodynamic equations with magnetic dissipation near a combination of Couette flow and a constant magnetic field. Here we show that there exist nearby explicit global in time low frequency solutions, which we call waves. Moreover, the linearized problem around these waves exhibits resonances under high frequency perturbations, called echoes, which result in norm inflation Gevrey regularity and infinite time blow-up in Sobolev regularity.

On Echo Chains in Landau damping: Self-similar Solutions and Gevrey 3 as a Linear Stability Threshold

We show that the linearized Vlasov-Poisson equations around self-similar non-homogeneous states near zero contain the full plasma echo mechanism, yielding Gevrey 3 as a critical stability class. Moreover, here Landau damping may persist despite blow-up: We construct a critical Gevrey regularity class in which the force field converges in $L^2$. Thus, on the one hand, the physical phenomenon of Landau damping holds. On the other hand, the density diverges to infinity in Sobolev regularity. Hence, ``strong damping'' cannot hold.

On Enhanced Dissipation for the Boussinesq Equations

In this article we consider the stability and damping problem for the 2D Boussinesq equations with partial dissipation near a two parameter family of stationary solutions which includes Couette flow and hydrostatic balance. In the first part we show that for the linearized problem in an infinite periodic channel the evolution is asymptotically stable if any diffusion coefficient is non-zero. In particular, this imposes weaker conditions than for example vertical diffusion. Furthermore, we study the interaction of shear flow, hydrostatic balance and partial dissipation. In a second part we adapt the methods used by Bedrossian, Vicol and Wang in the Navier-Stokes problem and combine them with cancellation properties of the Boussinesq equations to establish small data stability and enhanced dissipation results for the nonlinear Boussinesq problem with full dissipation.

On the Boussinesq equations with non-monotone temperature profiles

In this article we consider the asymptotic stability of the two-dimensional Boussinesq equations with partial dissipation near a combination of Couette flow and temperature profiles $T(y)$. As a first main result we show that if $T'$ is of size at most $ν^{1/3}$ in a suitable norm, then the linearized Boussinesq equations with only vertical dissipation of the velocity but not of the temperature are stable. Thus, mixing enhanced dissipation can suppress Rayleigh-Bénard instability in this linearized case. We further show that these results extend to the (forced) nonlinear equations with vertical dissipation in both temperature and velocity.

Exact constructions in the (non-linear) planar theory of elasticity: From elastic crystals to nematic elastomers

In this article we deduce necessary and sufficient conditions for the presence of `Conti-type', highly symmetric, exactly-stress free constructions in the geometrically non-linear, planar $n$-well problem, generalising results of [CKZ17]. Passing to the limit $n\rightarrow \infty$, this allows us to treat solid crystals and nematic elastomer differential inclusions simultaneously. In particular, we recover and generalise (non-linear) planar tripole star type deformations which were experimentally observed in [MA80,MA80a,KK91]. Further we discuss the corresponding geometrically linearised problem.

Higher Sobolev Regularity of Convex Integration Solutions in Elasticity

In this article we discuss quantitative properties of convex integration solutions arising in problems modeling shape-memory materials. For a two-dimensional, geometrically linearized model case, the hexagonal-to-rhombic phase transformation, we prove the existence of convex integration solutions $u$ with higher Sobolev regularity, i.e. there exists $θ_0>0$ such that $\nabla u \in W^{s,p}_{loc}(\mathbb{R}^2)\cap L^{\infty}(\mathbb{R}^2)$ for $s\in(0,1)$, $p\in(1,\infty)$ with $0<sp < θ_0$. We also recall a construction, which shows that in situations with additional symmetry much better regularity properties hold.

On circular flows: linear stability and damping

In this article we establish linear inviscid damping with optimal decay rates around 2D Taylor-Couette flow and similar monotone flows in an annular domain $B_{r_{2}}(0) \setminus B_{r_{1}}(0) \subset \mathbb{R}^{2}$. Following recent results by Wei, Zhang and Zhao, we establish stability in weighted norms, which allow for a singularity formation at the boundary, and additional provide a description of the blow-up behavior.

Linear Inviscid Damping for Monotone Shear Flows

In this article, we prove linear stability, scattering and inviscid damping with optimal decay rates for the linearized 2D Euler equations around a large class of strictly monotone shear flows, $(U(y),0)$, in a periodic channel under Sobolev perturbations. Here, we consider the settings of both an infinite periodic channel of period $L$, $\mathbb{T}_{L}\times \mathbb{R}$, as well as a finite periodic channel, $\mathbb{T}_{L} \times [0,1]$, with impermeable walls. The latter setting is shown to not only be technically more challenging, but to exhibit qualitatively different behavior due to boundary effects.

Linear inviscid damping for monotone shear flows in a finite periodic channel, boundary effects, blow-up and critical Sobolev regularity

In a previous article, \cite{Zill3}, we have established linear inviscid damping for a large class of monotone shear flows in a finite periodic channel and have further shown that boundary effects asymptotically lead to the formation of singularities of derivatives of the solution. As the main results of this article, we provide a detailed description of the singularity formation and establish stability in all sub-critical fractional Sobolev spaces and blow-up in all super-critical spaces. Furthermore, we discuss the implications of the blow-up to the problem of nonlinear inviscid damping in a finite periodic channel, where high regularity would be essential to control nonlinear effects.
