Intrinsic time gravity, heat kernel regularization, and emergence of Einstein's theory

The Hamiltonian of Intrinsic Time Gravity is elucidated. The theory describes Schrodinger evolution of our universe with respect to the fractional change of the total spatial volume. Gravitational interactions are introduced by extending Klauder's momentric variable with similarity transformations, and explicit spatial diffeomorphism invariance is enforced via similarity transformation with exponentials of spatial integrals. In analogy with Yang-Mills theory, a Cotton-York term is obtained from the Chern-Simons functional of the affine connection. The essential difference is the fundamental variable for geometrodynamics is the metric rather than a gauge connection; in the case of Yang-Mills, there is also no analog of the integral of the spatial Ricci scalar curvature. Heat kernel regularization is employed to isolate the divergences of coincidence limits; apart from an additional Cotton-York term, a prescription in which Einstein's Ricci scalar potential emerges naturally from the positive-definite self-adjoint Hamiltonian of the theory is demonstrated.

Intrinsic time geometrodynamics: explicit examples

Intrinsic time quantum geometrodynamics resolved `the problem of time' and bridged the deep divide between quantum mechanics and canonical quantum gravity with a Schrodinger equation which describes evolution in intrinsic time variable. In this formalism, Einstein's general relativity is a particular realization of a wider class of theories. Explicit classical black hole and cosmological solutions and the motion of test particles are derived and analyzed in this work in the context of constant three-curvature solutions in intrinsic time geometrodynamics; and we exemplify how this formalism yields results which agree with the predictions of Einstein's theory.

Quantum geometrodynamics with intrinsic time development

Quantum geometrodynamics with intrinsic time development is presented. Paradigm shift from full space-time covariance to spatial diffeomorphism invariance yields a non-vanishing Hamiltonian, a resolution of the `problem of time', and gauge-invariant temporal ordering in an ever expanding universe. Einstein's general relativity is a particular realization of a wider class of theories; and the framework prompts natural extensions and improvements, with the consequent dominance of Cotton-York potential at early times when the universe was small.

Intrinsic Time Quantum Geometrodynamics

Quantum Geometrodynamics with intrinsic time development and momentric variables is presented. An underlying SU(3) group structure at each spatial point regulates the theory. The intrinsic time behavior of the theory is analyzed, together with its ground state and primordial quantum fluctuations. Cotton-York potential dominates at early times when the universe was small; the ground state naturally resolves Penrose's Weyl Curvature Hypothesis, and thermodynamic and gravitational `arrows of time' point in the same direction. Ricci scalar potential corresponding to Einstein's General Relativity emerges as a zero-point energy contribution. A new set of fundamental commutation relations without Planck's constant emerges from the unification of Gravitation and Quantum Mechanics.

Affine group formulation of the Standard Model coupled to gravity

This work demonstrates that a complete description of the interaction of matter and all forces, gravitational and non-gravitational, can in fact be realized within a quantum affine algebraic framework. Using the affine group formalism, we construct elements of a physical Hilbert space for full, Lorentzian quantum gravity coupled to the Standard Model in four spacetime dimensions. Affine algebraic quantization of gravitation and matter on equal footing implies a fundamental uncertainty relation which is predicated upon a non-vanishing cosmological constant.

Exact solutions of the Wheeler-DeWitt equation and the Yamabe construction

Exact solutions of the Wheeler-DeWitt equation of the full theory of four dimensional gravity of Lorentzian signature are obtained. They are characterized by Schrödinger wavefunctionals having support on 3-metrics of constant spatial scalar curvature, and thus contain two full physical field degrees of freedom in accordance with the Yamabe construction. These solutions are moreover Gaussians of minimum uncertainty and they are naturally associated with a rigged Hilbert space. In addition, in the limit the regulator is removed, exact 3-dimensional diffeomorphism and local gauge invariance of the solutions are recovered.

Affine group representation formalism for four dimensional, Lorentzian, quantum gravity

Within the context of the Ashtekar variables, the Hamiltonian constraint of four-dimensional pure General Relativity with cosmological constant, $Λ$, is reexpressed as an affine algebra with the commutator of the imaginary part of the Chern-Simons functional, $Q$, and the positive-definite volume element. This demonstrates that the affine algebra quantization program of Klauder can indeed be applicable to the full Lorentzian signature theory of quantum gravity with non-vanishing cosmological constant; and it facilitates the construction of solutions to all of the constraints. Unitary, irreducible representations of the affine group exhibit a natural Hilbert space structure, and coherent states and other physical states can be generated from a fiducial state. It is also intriguing that formulation of the Hamiltonian constraint or Wheeler-DeWitt equation as an affine algebra requires a non-vanishing cosmological constant; and a fundamental uncertainty relation of the form $\frac{Δ{V}}{<{V}>}Δ{Q}\geq 2πΛL^2_{Planck}$ (wherein $V$ is the total volume) may apply to all physical states of quantum gravity.

Exact Abelian and Non-Abelian Geometric Phases

The existence of Hopf fibrations S^{2N+1}/S^1 = CP^N and S^{4K+3}/S^3 = HP^K allows us to treat the Hilbert space of generic finite-dimensional quantum systems as the total bundle space with respectively $U(1)$ and $SU(2)$ fibers and complex and quaternionic projective spaces as base manifolds. This alternative method of studying quantum states and their evolution reveals the intimate connection between generic quantum mechanical systems and geometrical objects. The exact Abelian and non-Abelian geometric phases, and more generally the geometrical factors for open paths, and their precise correspondence with geometric Kahler and hyper-Kahler connections will be discussed. Explicit physical examples are used to verify and exemplify the formalism.

Intrinsic time gravity and the Lichnerowicz-York equation

We investigate the effect on the Hamiltonian structure of general relativity of choosing an intrinsic time to fix the time slicing. 3-covariance with momentum constraint is maintained, but the Hamiltonian constraint is replaced by a dynamical equation for the trace of the momentum. This reveals a very simple structure with a local reduced Hamiltonian. The theory is easily generalised; in particular, the square of the Cotton-York tensor density can be added as an extra part of the potential while at the same time maintaining the classic 2 + 2 degrees of freedom. Initial data construction is simple in the extended theory; we get a generalised Lichnerowicz-York equation with nice existence and uniqueness properties. Adding standard matter fields is quite straightforward.

Generalized Painleve-Gullstrand descriptions of Kerr-Newman black holes

Generalized Painleve-Gullstrand metrics are explicitly constructed for the Kerr-Newman family of charged rotating black holes. These descriptions are free of all coordinate singularities; moreover, unlike the Doran and other proposed metrics, an extra tunable function is introduced to ensure all variables in the metrics remain real for all values of the mass M, charge Q, angular momentum aM, and cosmological constant Λ> - 3/(a^2). To describe fermions in Kerr-Newman spacetimes, the stronger requirement of non-singular vierbein one-forms at the horizon(s) is imposed and coordinate singularities are eliminated by local Lorentz boosts. Other known vierbein fields of Kerr-Newman black holes are analysed and discussed; and it is revealed that some of these descriptions are actually not related by physical Lorentz transformations to the original Kerr-Newman expression in Boyer-Lindquist coordinates - which is the reason complex components appear (for certain ranges of the radial coordinate) in these metrics. As an application of our constructions the correct effective Hawking temperature for Kerr black holes is derived with the method of Parikh and Wilczek.

New formulation of Horava-Lifshitz quantum gravity as a master constraint theory

Both projectable and non-projectable versions of Horava-Lifshitz gravity face serious challenges. In the non-projectable version, the constraint algebra is seemingly inconsistent. The projectable version lacks a local Hamiltonian constraint, thus allowing for an extra scalar mode which can be problematic. A new formulation of non-projectable Horava-Lifshitz gravity, naturally realized as a representation of the master constraint algebra studied by loop quantum gravity researchers, is presented. This yields a consistent canonical theory with first class constraints. It captures the essence of Horava-Lifshitz gravity in retaining only spatial diffeomorphisms (instead of full space-time covariance) as the physically relevant non-trivial gauge symmetry; at the same time the local Hamiltonian constraint needed to eliminate the extra mode is equivalently enforced by the master constraint.

New length operator for loop quantum gravity

An alternative expression for the length operator in loop quantum gravity is presented. The operator is background independent, symmetric, positive semidefinite, and well defined on the kinematical Hilbert space. The expression for the regularized length operator can moreover be understood both from a simple geometrical perspective as the average of a formula relating the length to area, volume and flux operators, and also consistently as the result of direct substitution of the densitized triad operator with the functional derivative operator into the regularized expression of the length. Both these derivations are discussed, and the origin of an undetermined overall factor in each case is also elucidated.

Einstein Manifolds, Abelian Instantons, Bundle Reduction, and the Cosmological Constant

The anti-self-dual projection of the spin connections of certain four-dimensional Einstein manifolds can be Abelian in nature. These configurations signify bundle reductions. By a theorem of Kobayashi and Nomizu such a process is predicated on the existence of a covariantly constant field. It turns out that even without fundamental Higgs fields and other physical matter, gravitational self-interactions can generate this mechanism if the cosmological constant is non-vanishing. This article identifies the order parameter, and clarifies how these Abelian instanton solutions are associated with a Higgs triplet which causes the bundle reduction from SO(3) gauge group to U(1).

Invariant Regularization of Anomaly-Free Chiral Theories

We present a generalization of the Frolov-Slavnov invariant regularization scheme for chiral fermion theories in curved spacetimes. local gauge symmetries of the theory, including local Lorentz invariance. The perturbative scheme works for arbitrary representations which satisfy the chiral gauge anomaly and the mixed Lorentz-gauge anomaly cancellation conditions. Anomalous theories on the other hand manifest themselves by having divergent fermion loops which remain unregularized by the scheme. Since the invariant scheme is promoted to also include local Lorentz invariance, spectator fields which do not couple to gravity cannot be, and are not, introduced. Furthermore, the scheme is truly chiral (Weyl) in that all fields, including the regulators, are left-handed; and only the left-handed spin connection is needed. The scheme is, therefore, well suited for the study of the interaction of matter with all four known forces in a completely chiral fashion. In contrast with the vectorlike formulation, the degeneracy between the Adler-Bell-Jackiw current and the fermion number current in the bare action is preserved by the chiral regularization scheme.

Self-dual variables, positive semi-definite action, and discrete transformations in four-dimensional quantum gravity

A positive semi-definite Euclidean action for arbitrary four-topologies can be constructed by adding appropriate Yang-Mills and topological terms to the Samuel-Jacobson-Smolin action of gravity with (anti)self-dual variables. Moreover, on-shell, the (anti)self-dual sector of the new theory corresponds precisely to all Einstein manifolds in four dimensions. The Lorentzian signature action, and its analytic continuations are also considered. A self-contained discussion is given on the effects of discrete transformations C, P and T on the Samuel-Jacobson-Smolin action, and other proposed actions which utilize self- or anti-self-dual variables as fundamental variables in the description of four-dimensional gravity.

The Standard Model with gravity couplings

In this paper, we examine the coupling of matter fields to gravity within the framework of the Standard Model of particle physics. The coupling is described in terms of Weyl fermions of a definite chirality, and employs only (anti)self-dual or left-handed spin connection fields. It is known from the work of Ashtekar and others that such fields can furnish a complete description of gravity without matter. We show that conditions ensuring the cancellation of perturbative chiral gauge anomalies are not disturbed. We also explore a global anomaly associated with the theory, and argue that its removal requires that the number of fundamental fermions in the theory must be multiples of 16. In addition, we investigate the behavior of the theory under discrete transformations P, C and T; and discuss possible violations of these discrete symmetries, including CPT, in the presence of instantons and the Adler-Bell-Jackiw anomaly.

The Chern-Simons Invariant as the Natural Time Variable for Classical and Quantum Cosmology

We propose that the Chern-Simons invariant of the Ashtekar-Sen connection is the natural internal time coordinate for classical and quantum cosmology. The reasons for this are a number of interesting properties of this functional, which we describe here. 1)It is a function on the gauge and diffeomorphism invariant configuration space, whose gradient is orthogonal to the two physical degrees of freedom, in the metric defined by the Ashtekar formulation of general relativity. 2)The imaginary part of the Chern-Simons form reduces in the limit of small cosmological constant, $Λ$, and solutions close to DeSitter spacetime, to the York extrinsic time coordinate. 3)Small matter-field excitations of the Chern-Simons state satisfy, by virtue of the quantum constraints, a functional Schroedinger equation in which the matter fields evolve on a DeSitter background in the Chern-Simons time. We then n propose this is the natural vacuum state of the theory for $Λ\neq 0$. 4)This time coordinate is periodic on the configuration space of Euclideanized spacetimes, due to the large gauge transformations, which means that physical expectation values for all states in non-perturbative quantum gravity will satisfy the $KMS$ condition, and may then be interpreted as thermal states. 5)Forms for the physical hamiltonians and inner product which support the proposal are suggested, and a new action principle for general relativity, as a geodesic principle on the connection superspace, is found.

Superspace Dynamics and Perturbations Around "Emptiness"

Superspace parametrized by gauge potentials instead of metric three-geometries is discussed in the context of the Ashtekar variables. Among other things, an "internal clock" for the full theory can be identified. Gauge-fixing conditions which lead to the natural geometrical separation of physical from gauge modes are derived with the use of the metric in connection-superspace. A perturbation scheme about an unconventional background which is inaccessible to conventional variables is presented. The resultant expansion retains much of the simplicity of Ashtekar's formulation of General Relativity.
