Optimal dividend payout with path-dependent drawdown constraint

This paper studies an optimal dividend problem with a drawdown constraint in a Brownian motion model, requiring the dividend payout rate to remain above a fixed proportion of its historical maximum. This leads to a path-dependent stochastic control problem, as the admissible control depends on its own past values. The associated Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman (HJB) equation is a novel two-dimensional variational inequality with a gradient constraint, a type of problem previously only analyzed in the literature using viscosity solution techniques. In contrast, this paper employs delicate PDE methods to establish the existence of a strong solution. This stronger regularity allows us to explicitly characterize an optimal feedback control strategy, expressed in terms of two free boundaries and the running maximum surplus process. Furthermore, we derive key properties of the value function and the free boundaries, including boundedness and continuity. Numerical examples are provided to verify the theoretical results and to offer new financial insights.

Dynamic optimal reinsurance and dividend-payout in finite time horizon

This paper studies a dynamic optimal reinsurance and dividend-payout problem for an insurance company in a finite time horizon. The goal of the company is to maximize the expected cumulative discounted dividend payouts until bankruptcy or maturity which comes earlier. The company is allowed to buy reinsurance contracts dynamically over the whole time horizon to cede its risk exposure with other reinsurance companies. This is a mixed singular-classical control problem and the corresponding Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman equation is a variational inequality with a fully nonlinear operator and subject to a gradient constraint. We obtain the $C^{2,1}$ smoothness of the value function and a comparison principle for its gradient function by the penalty approximation method so that one can establish an efficient numerical scheme to compute the value function. We find that the surplus-time space can be divided into three non-overlapping regions by a risk-magnitude and time-dependent reinsurance barrier and a time-dependent dividend-payout barrier. The insurance company should be exposed to a higher risk as its surplus increases; be exposed to the entire risk once its surplus upward crosses the reinsurance barrier; and pay out all its reserves exceeding the dividend-payout barrier. The estimated localities of these regions are also provided.

A free boundary problem arising from a multi-state regime-switching stock trading model

In this paper, we study a free boundary problem, which arises from an optimal trading problem of a stock that is driven by a uncertain market status process. The free boundary problem is a variational inequality system of three functions with a degenerate operator. The main contribution of this paper is that we not only prove all the four switching free boundaries are no-overlapping, monotonic and $C^{\infty}$-smooth, but also completely determine their relative localities and provide the optimal trading strategies for the stock trading problem.

Optimal Investment Stopping Problem with Nonsmooth Utility in Finite Horizon

In this paper, we investigate an interesting and important stopping problem mixed with stochastic controls and a \textit{nonsmooth} utility over a finite time horizon. The paper aims to develop new methodologies, which are significantly different from those of mixed dynamic optimal control and stopping problems in the existing literature, to figure out a manager's decision. We formulate our model to a free boundary problem of a fully \textit{nonlinear} equation. By means of a dual transformation, however, we can convert the above problem to a new free boundary problem of a \textit{linear} equation. Finally, using the corresponding inverse dual transformation, we apply the theoretical results established for the new free boundary problem to obtain the properties of the optimal strategy and the optimal stopping time to achieve a certain level for the original problem over a finite time investment horizon.
