Capillary gravity water waves linearized at monotone shear flows: eigenvalues and inviscid damping

This paper is concerned with the eigenvalues and linear inviscid damping of the 2D capillary gravity water waves of finite depth $x_2\in(-h,0)$ linearized at a monotone shear flow $U(x_2)$. Unlike the linearized Euler equation in a fixed channel where eigenvalues exist only in low horizontal wave number $k$, we first prove the linearized capillary gravity wave has two branches of eigenvalues $-ikc^\pm(k)$, where the wave speeds $c^\pm(k)=O(\sqrt{|k|})$ for $|k|\gg1$ have the same asymptotics as the those of the linear irrotational capillary gravity waves. Under the additional assumption of $U"\ne0$, we obtain the complete continuation of these two branches, which are all the eigenvalues in this (and some other) case(s). Particularly $-ikc^-(k)$ could bifurcate into unstable eigenvalues at $c^-(k)=U(-h)$. The bifurcation of unstable eigenvalues from inflection values of $U$ is also proved. Assuming no singular modes, i.e. no embedded eigenvalues for any wave number $k$, linear solutions $(v(t,x),η(t,x_1))$ are studieded in both periodic-in-$x_1$ and $x_1\in R$ cases, where $v$ is the velocity and $η$ the surface profile. Solutions can be split into $(v^p,η^p)$ and $(v^c,η^c)$ whose $k$-th Fourier mode in $x_1$ correspond to the eigenvalues and the continuous spectra of wave number $k$, respectively. The component $(v^p,η^p)$ is governed by a (possibly unstable) dispersion relation given by the eigenvalues, which are simply $k\to-ikc^\pm(k)$ in the case of $x_1\in R$. The other component $(v^c,η^c)$ satisfies the inviscid damping as fast as $|v_1^c|_{L_x^2},|η^c|_{L_x^2}=O(|t|^{-1})$ and $|v_2^c|_{L_x^2}=O(t^{-2})$ as $|t|\gg1$. Additional decay of $tv_1^c,t^2v_2^c$ in $L_x^2L_t^q$, $q\in(2,\infty]$, is obtained after leading asymptotic terms are removed, which are in the forms of $t$-dependent translations in $x_1$ of certain functions of $x$.

Separable Hamiltonian PDEs and Turning point principle for stability of gaseous stars

We consider stability of non-rotating gaseous stars modeled by the Euler-Poisson system. Under general assumptions on the equation of states, we proved a turning point principle (TPP) that the stability of the stars is entirely determined by the mass-radius curve parameterized by the center density. In particular, the stability can only change at extrema (i.e. local maximum or minimum points) of the total mass. For very general equation of states, TPP implies that for increasing center density the stars are stable up to the first mass maximum and unstable beyond this point until next mass extremum (a minimum). Moreover, we get a precise counting of unstable modes and exponential trichotomy estimates for the linearized Euler-Poisson system. To prove these results, we develop a general framework of separable Hamiltonian PDEs. The general approach is flexible and can be used for many other problems including stability of rotating and magnetic stars, relativistic stars and galaxies.

Smooth stationary water waves with exponentially localized vorticity

We study stationary capillary-gravity waves in a two-dimensional body of water that rests above a flat ocean bed and below vacuum. This system is described by the Euler equations with a free surface. Our main result states that there exist large families of such waves that carry finite energy and exhibit an exponentially localized distribution of (nontrivial) vorticity. This is accomplished by combining ideas drawn from the theory of spike-layer solutions to singularly perturbed elliptic equations, with techniques from the study of steady solutions of the water wave problem.

Stability of traveling waves of nonlinear Schrödinger equation with nonzero condition at infinity

We study the stability of traveling waves of nonlinear Schrödinger equation with nonzero condition at infinity obtained via a constrained variational approach. Two important physical models are Gross-Pitaevskii (GP) equation and cubic-quintic equation. First, under a non-degeneracy condition we prove a sharp instability criterion for 3D traveling waves of (GP), which had been conjectured in the physical literature. This result is also extended for general nonlinearity and higher dimensions, including 4D (GP) and 3D cubic-quintic equations. Second, for cubic-quintic type sub-critical or critical nonlinearity, we construct slow traveling waves and prove their nonlinear instability in any dimension. For traveling waves without vortices (i.e. nonvanishing) of general nonlinearity in any dimension, we find the sharp condition for linear instability. Third, we prove that any 2D traveling wave of (GP) is transversally unstable and find the sharp interval of unstable transversal wave numbers. Near unstable traveling waves of above cases, we construct unstable and stable invariant manifolds.

On the wind generation of water waves

In this work, we consider the mathematical theory of wind generated water waves. This entails determining the stability properties of the family of laminar flow solutions to the two-phase interface Euler equation. We present a rigorous derivation of the linearized evolution equations about an arbitrary steady solution, and, using this, we give a complete proof of the instability criterion of Miles. Our analysis is valid even in the presence of surface tension and a vortex sheet (discontinuity in the tangential velocity across the air--sea interface). We are thus able to give a unified equation connecting the Kelvin--Helmholtz and quasi-laminar models of wave generation.

Equivariant and self-similar standing waves for a Hamiltonian hyperbolic-hyperbolic spin-field system

In this paper we study the existence of special symmetric solutions to a Hamiltonian hyperbolic-hyperbolic coupled spin-field system, where the spins are maps from $\mathbb R^{2+1}$ into the sphere $§^2$ or the pseudo-sphere $\H^2$. This model was introduced in \cite{Martina} and it is also known as the {\it hyperbolic-hyperbolic generalized Ishimori system}. Relying on the hyperbolic coordinates introduced in \cite{KNZ11}, we prove the existence of equivariant standing waves in both regular hyperbolic coordinates as well as similarity variables, and describe their asymptotic behaviour.

Traveling water waves with compactly supported vorticity

In this paper, we prove the existence of two-dimensional, traveling, capillary-gravity, water waves with compactly supported vorticity. Specifically, we consider the cases where the vorticity is a $δ$-function (a point vortex), or has small compact support (a vortex patch). Using a global bifurcation theoretic argument, we construct a continuum of finite-amplitude, finite-vorticity solutions for the periodic point vortex problem. For the non-periodic case, with either a vortex point or patch, we prove the existence of a continuum of small-amplitude, small-vorticity solutions.

Samll BGK waves and nonlinear Landau damping (higher dimensions)

Consider Vlasov-Poisson system with a fixed ion background and periodic condition on the space variables, in any dimension d\geq2. First, we show that for general homogeneous equilibrium and any periodic x-box, within any small neighborhood in the Sobolev space W_{x,v}^{s,p} (p>1,s<1+(1/p)) of the steady distribution function, there exist nontrivial travelling wave solutions (BGK waves) with arbitrary traveling speed. This implies that nonlinear Landau damping is not true in W^{s,p}(s<1+(1/p)) space for any homogeneous equilibria and in any period box. The BGK waves constructed are one dimensional, that is, depending only on one space variable. Higher dimensional BGK waves are shown to not exist. Second, for homogeneous equilibria satisfying Penrose's linear stability condition, we prove that there exist no nontrivial invariant structures in the (1+|v|^{2})^{b}-weighted H_{x,v}^{s} (b>((d-1)/4), s>(3/2)) neighborhood. Since arbitrarilly small BGK waves can also be constructed near any homogeneous equilibria in such weighted H_{x,v}^{s} (s<(3/2)) norm, this shows that s=(3/2) is the critical regularity for the existence of nontrivial invariant structures near stable homogeneous equilibria. These generalize our previous results in the one dimensional case.

Unstable manifolds of Euler equations

We consider a steady state $v_{0}$ of the Euler equation in a fixed bounded domain in $\mathbf{R}^{n}$. Suppose the linearized Euler equation has an exponential dichotomy of unstable and center-stable subspaces. By rewriting the Euler equation as an ODE on an infinite dimensional manifold of volume preserving maps in $W^{k, q}$, $(k>1+\frac{n}{q})$, the unstable (and stable) manifolds of $v_{0}$ are constructed under certain spectral gap condition which is verified for both 2D and 3D examples. In particular, when the unstable subspace is finite dimensional, this implies the nonlinear instability of $v_{0}$ in the sense that arbitrarily small $W^{k, q}$ perturbations can lead to $L^{2}$ growth of the nonlinear solutions.

Inviscid dynamical structures near Couette flow

Consider inviscid fluids in a channel {-1<y<1}. For the Couette flow v_0=(y,0), the vertical velocity of solutions to the linearized Euler equation at v_0 decays in time. At the nonlinear level, such inviscid damping has not been proved. First, we show that in any (vorticity) H^{s}(s<(3/2)) neighborhood of Couette flow, there exist non-parallel steady flows with arbitrary minimal horizontal period. This implies that nonlinear inviscid damping is not true in any (vorticity) H^{s}(s<(3/2)) neighborhood of Couette flow and for any horizontal period. Indeed, the long time behavior in such neighborhoods are very rich, including nontrivial steady flows, stable and unstable manifolds of nearby unstable shears. Second, in the (vorticity) H^{s}(s>(3/2)) neighborhood of Couette, we show that there exist no non-parallel steadily travelling flows v(x-ct,y), and no unstable shears. This suggests that the long time dynamics in H^{s}(s>(3/2)) neighborhoods of Couette might be much simpler. Such contrasting dynamics in H^{s} spaces with the critical power s=(3/2) is a truly nonlinear phenomena, since the linear inviscid damping near Couette is true for any initial vorticity in L^2.

Normally Elliptic Singular Perturbations and Persistence of Homoclinic Orbits

We consider a dynamical system, possibly infinite dimensional or non-autonomous, with fast and slow time scales which is oscillatory with high frequencies in the fast directions. We first derive and justify the limit system of the slow variables. Assuming a steady state persists, we construct the stable, unstable, center-stable, center-unstable, and center manifolds of the steady state of a size of order O(1) and give their leading order approximations. Finally, using these tools, we study the persistence of homoclinic solutions in this type of normally elliptic singular perturbation problems.

Small BGK waves and nonlinear Landau damping

Consider 1D Vlasov-poisson system with a fixed ion background and periodic condition on the space variable. First, we show that for general homogeneous equilibria, within any small neighborhood in the Sobolev space W^{s,p} (p>1,s<1+(1/p)) of the steady distribution function, there exist nontrivial travelling wave solutions (BGK waves) with arbitrary minimal period and traveling speed. This implies that nonlinear Landau damping is not true in W^{s,p}(s<1+(1/p)) space for any homogeneous equilibria and any spatial period. Indeed, in W^{s,p} (s<1+(1/p)) neighborhood of any homogeneous state, the long time dynamics is very rich, including travelling BGK waves, unstable homogeneous states and their possible invariant manifolds. Second, it is shown that for homogeneous equilibria satisfying Penrose's linear stability condition, there exist no nontrivial travelling BGK waves and unstable homogeneous states in some W^{s,p} (p>1,s>1+(1/p)) neighborhood. Furthermore, when p=2,we prove that there exist no nontrivial invariant structures in the H^{s} (s>(3/2)) neighborhood of stable homogeneous states. These results suggest the long time dynamics in the W^{s,p} (s>1+(1/p)) and particularly, in the H^{s} (s>(3/2)) neighborhoods of a stable homogeneous state might be relatively simple. We also demonstrate that linear damping holds for initial perturbations in very rough spaces, for linearly stable homogeneous state. This suggests that the contrasting dynamics in W^{s,p} spaces with the critical power s=1+(1/p) is a trully nonlinear phenomena which can not be traced back to the linear level.
