Generalized Polarization Transform: A Novel Coded Transmission Paradigm

For the upcoming 6G wireless networks, a new wave of applications and services will demand ultra-high data rates and reliability. To this end, future wireless systems are expected to pave the way for entirely new fundamental air interface technologies to attain a breakthrough in spectrum efficiency (SE). This article discusses a new paradigm, named generalized polarization transform (GPT), to achieve an integrated design of coding, modulation, multi-antenna, multiple access, etc., in a real sense. The GPT enabled air interface develops far-reaching insights that the joint optimization of critical air interface ingredients can achieve remarkable gains on SE compared with the state-of-the-art module-stacking design.

Statistical QoS Analysis of Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface-assisted D2D Communication

This work performs the statistical QoS analysis of a Rician block-fading reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-assisted D2D link in which the transmit node operates under delay QoS constraints. First, we perform mode selection for the D2D link, in which the D2D pair can either communicate directly by relaying data from RISs or through a base station (BS). Next, we provide closed-form expressions for the effective capacity (EC) of the RIS-assisted D2D link. When channel state information at the transmitter (CSIT) is available, the transmit D2D node communicates with the variable rate $r_t(n)$ (adjustable according to the channel conditions); otherwise, it uses a fixed rate $r_t$. It allows us to model the RIS-assisted D2D link as a Markov system in both cases. We also extend our analysis to overlay and underlay D2D settings. To improve the throughput of the RIS-assisted D2D link when CSIT is unknown, we use the HARQ retransmission scheme and provide the EC analysis of the HARQ-enabled RIS-assisted D2D link. Finally, simulation results demonstrate that: i) the EC increases with an increase in RIS elements, ii) the EC decreases when strict QoS constraints are imposed at the transmit node, iii) the EC decreases with an increase in the variance of the path loss estimation error, iv) the EC increases with an increase in the probability of ON states, v) EC increases by using HARQ when CSIT is unknown, and it can reach up to $5\times$ the usual EC (with no HARQ and without CSIT) by using the optimal number of retransmissions.

A Survey of Energy-Efficient Techniques for 5G Networks and Challenges Ahead

After about a decade of intense research, spurred by both economic and operational considerations, and by environmental concerns, energy efficiency has now become a key pillar in the design of communication networks. With the advent of the fifth generation of wireless networks, with millions more base stations and billions of connected devices, the need for energy-efficient system design and operation will be even more compelling. This survey provides an overview of energy-efficient wireless communications, reviews seminal and recent contribution to the state-of-the-art, including the papers published in this special issue, and discusses the most relevant research challenges to be addressed in the future.

Application of Non-orthogonal Multiple Access in LTE and 5G Networks

As the latest member of the multiple access family, non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) has been recently proposed for 3GPP Long Term Evolution (LTE) and envisioned to be an essential component of 5th generation (5G) mobile networks. The key feature of NOMA is to serve multiple users at the same time/frequency/code, but with different power levels, which yields a significant spectral efficiency gain over conventional orthogonal MA. This article provides a systematic treatment of this newly emerging technology, from its combination with multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) technologies, to cooperative NOMA, as well as the interplay between NOMA and cognitive radio. This article also reviews the state of the art in the standardization activities concerning the implementation of NOMA in LTE and 5G networks.

Beamspace Channel Estimation for Millimeter-Wave Massive MIMO Systems with Lens Antenna Array

By employing the lens antenna array, beamspace MIMO can utilize beam selection to reduce the number of required RF chains in mmWave massive MIMO systems without obvious performance loss. However, to achieve the capacityapproaching performance, beam selection requires the accurate information of beamspace channel of large size, which is challenging, especially when the number of RF chains is limited. To solve this problem, in this paper we propose a reliable support detection (SD)-based channel estimation scheme. Specifically, we propose to decompose the total beamspace channel estimation problem into a series of sub-problems, each of which only considers one sparse channel component. For each channel component, we first reliably detect its support by utilizing the structural characteristics of mmWave beamspace channel. Then, the influence of this channel component is removed from the total beamspace channel estimation problem. After the supports of all channel components have been detected, the nonzero elements of the sparse beamspace channel can be estimated with low pilot overhead. Simulation results show that the proposed SD-based channel estimation outperforms conventional schemes and enjoys satisfying accuracy, even in the low SNR region.

Energy-Efficient Hybrid Analog and Digital Precoding for mmWave MIMO Systems with Large Antenna Arrays

Millimeter wave (mmWave) MIMO will likely use hybrid analog and digital precoding, which uses a small number of RF chains to avoid energy consumption associated with mixed signal components like analog-to-digital components not to mention baseband processing complexity. However, most hybrid precoding techniques consider a fully-connected architecture requiring a large number of phase shifters, which is also energyintensive. In this paper, we focus on the more energy-efficient hybrid precoding with sub-connected architecture, and propose a successive interference cancelation (SIC)-based hybrid precoding with near-optimal performance and low complexity. Inspired by the idea of SIC for multi-user signal detection, we first propose to decompose the total achievable rate optimization problem with non-convex constraints into a series of simple sub-rate optimization problems, each of which only considers one sub-antenna array. Then, we prove that maximizing the achievable sub-rate of each sub-antenna array is equivalent to simply seeking a precoding vector sufficiently close (in terms of Euclidean distance) to the unconstrained optimal solution. Finally, we propose a low-complexity algorithm to realize SICbased hybrid precoding, which can avoid the need for the singular value decomposition (SVD) and matrix inversion. Complexity evaluation shows that the complexity of SIC-based hybrid precoding is only about 10% as complex as that of the recently proposed spatially sparse precoding in typical mmWave MIMO systems. Simulation results verify the near-optimal performance of SIC-based hybrid precoding.

Full Duplex Networking: Mission Impossible?

Mobile traffic is projected to increase 1000 times from 2010 to 2020. This poses significant challenges on the 5th generation (5G) wireless communication system design, including network structure, air interface, key transmission schemes, multiple access, and duplexing schemes. In this paper, full duplex networking issues are discussed, aiming to provide some insights on the design and possible future deployment for 5G. Particularly, the interference scenarios in full duplex are analyzed, followed by discussions on several candidate interference mitigation approaches, interference proof frame structures, transceiver structures for channel reciprocity recovery, and super full duplex base station where each sector operates in time division duplex (TDD) mode. The extension of TDD and frequency division duplex (FDD) to full duplex is also examined. It is anticipated that with future standardization and deployment of full duplex systems, TDD and FDD will be harmoniously integrated, supporting all the existing half duplex mobile phones efficiently, and leading to a substantially enhanced 5G system performance.

Near-Optimal Hybrid Analog and Digital Precoding for Downlink mmWave Massive MIMO Systems

Millimeter wave (mmWave) massive MIMO can achieve orders of magnitude increase in spectral and energy efficiency, and it usually exploits the hybrid analog and digital precoding to overcome the serious signal attenuation induced by mmWave frequencies. However, most of hybrid precoding schemes focus on the full-array structure, which involves a high complexity. In this paper, we propose a near-optimal iterative hybrid precoding scheme based on the more realistic subarray structure with low complexity. We first decompose the complicated capacity optimization problem into a series of ones easier to be handled by considering each antenna array one by one. Then we optimize the achievable capacity of each antenna array from the first one to the last one by utilizing the idea of successive interference cancelation (SIC), which is realized in an iterative procedure that is easy to be parallelized. It is shown that the proposed hybrid precoding scheme can achieve better performance than other recently proposed hybrid precoding schemes, while it also enjoys an acceptable computational complexity.

Low-Complexity Soft-Output Signal Detection Based on Gauss-Seidel Method for Uplink Multi-User Large-Scale MIMO Systems

For uplink large-scale MIMO systems, minimum mean square error (MMSE) algorithm is near-optimal but involves matrix inversion with high complexity. In this paper, we propose to exploit the Gauss-Seidel (GS) method to iteratively realize the MMSE algorithm without the complicated matrix inversion. To further accelerate the convergence rate and reduce the complexity, we propose a diagonal-approximate initial solution to the GS method, which is much closer to the final solution than the traditional zero-vector initial solution. We also propose a approximated method to compute log-likelihood ratios (LLRs) for soft channel decoding with a negligible performance loss. The analysis shows that the proposed GS-based algorithm can reduce the computational complexity from O(K^3) to O(K^2), where K is the number of users. Simulation results verify that the proposed algorithm outperforms the recently proposed Neumann series approximation algorithm, and achieves the near-optimal performance of the classical MMSE algorithm with a small number of iterations.

Near-Optimal Linear Precoding with Low Complexity for Massive MIMO

Linear precoding techniques can achieve near- optimal capacity due to the special channel property in down- link massive MIMO systems, but involve high complexity since complicated matrix inversion of large size is required. In this paper, we propose a low-complexity linear precoding scheme based on the Gauss-Seidel (GS) method. The proposed scheme can achieve the capacity-approaching performance of the classical linear precoding schemes in an iterative way without complicated matrix inversion, which can reduce the overall complexity by one order of magnitude. The performance guarantee of the proposed GS-based precoding is analyzed from the following three aspects. At first, we prove that GS-based precoding satisfies the transmit power constraint. Then, we prove that GS-based precoding enjoys a faster convergence rate than the recently proposed Neumann-based precoding. At last, the convergence rate achieved by GS-based precoding is quantified, which reveals that GS-based precoding converges faster with the increasing number of BS antennas. To further accelerate the convergence rate and reduce the complexity, we propose a zone-based initial solution to GS-based precoding, which is much closer to the final solution than the traditional initial solution. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed scheme outperforms Neumann- based precoding, and achieves the exact capacity-approaching performance of the classical linear precoding schemes with only a small number of iterations both in Rayleigh fading channels and spatially correlated channels.
