One-Dimensional Disordered Bosonic Systems

Disorder is everywhere in nature and it has a fundamental impact on the behavior of many quantum systems. The presence of a small amount of disorder, in fact, can dramatically change the coherence and transport properties of a system. Despite the growing interest in this topic, a complete understanding of the issue is still missing. An open question, for example, is the description of the interplay of disorder and interactions, which has been predicted to give rise to exotic states of matter such as quantum glasses or many-body localization. In this review, we will present an overview of experimental observations with disordered quantum gases, focused on one-dimensional bosons, and we will connect them with theoretical predictions.

A dual-species Bose-Einstein condensate with attractive interspecies interactions

We report on the production of a $^{41}$K-$^{87}$Rb dual-species Bose-Einstein condensate with tunable interspecies interaction and we study the mixture in the attractive regime, i.e. for negative values of the interspecies scattering length $a_{12}$. The binary condensate is prepared in the ground state and confined in a pure optical trap. We exploit Feshbach resonances for tuning the value of $a_{12}$. After compensating the gravitational sag between the two species with a magnetic field gradient, we drive the mixture into the attractive regime. We let the system to evolve both in free space and in an optical waveguide. In both geometries, for strong attractive interactions, we observe the formation of self-bound states, recognizable as quantum droplets. Our findings prove that robust, long-lived droplet states can be realized in attractive two-species mixtures, despite the two atomic components may experience different potentials.

Dual-species Bose-Einstein condensate of 41K and 87Rb in a hybrid trap

We report on the production of a 41K-87Rb dual-species Bose-Einstein condensate in a hybrid trap, consisting of a magnetic quadrupole and an optical dipole potential. After loading both atomic species in the trap, we cool down 87Rb first by magnetic and then by optical evaporation, while 41K is sympathetically cooled by elastic collisions with 87Rb. We eventually produce two-component condensates with more than 10^5 atoms and tunable species population imbalance. We observe the immiscibility of the quantum mixture by measuring the density profile of each species after releasing them from the trap.

Finite-temperature effects on interacting bosonic 1D systems in disordered lattices

We analyze the finite-temperature effects on the phase diagram describing the insulating properties of interacting 1D bosons in a quasi-periodic lattice. We examine thermal effects by comparing experimental results to exact diagonalization for small-sized systems and to density-matrix renormalization group (DMRG) computations. At weak interactions, we find short thermal correlation lengths, indicating a substantial impact of temperature on the system coherence. Conversely, at strong interactions, the obtained thermal correlation lengths are significantly larger than the localization length, and the quantum nature of the T=0 Bose glass phase is preserved up to a crossover temperature that depends on the disorder strength. Furthermore, in the absence of disorder, we show how quasi-exact finite-T DMRG computations, compared to experimental results, can be employed to estimate the temperature, which is not directly accessible in the experiment.

Modeling the transport of interacting matter-waves in disorder by a non-linear diffusion equation

We model the expansion of an interacting atomic Bose-Einstein condensate in a disordered lattice with a nonlinear diffusion equation normally used for a variety of classical systems. We find approximate solutions of the diffusion equation that well reproduce the experimental observations for both short and asymptotic expansion times. Our study establishes a connection between the peculiar shape of the expanding density profiles and the microscopic nonlinear diffusion coefficients.

Transport of a Bose gas in 1D disordered lattices at the fluid-insulator transition

We investigate the momentum-dependent transport of 1D quasi-condensates in quasiperiodic optical lattices. We observe a sharp crossover from a weakly dissipative regime to a strongly unstable one at a disorder-dependent critical momentum. In the limit of non-disordered lattices the observations indicate a contribution of quantum phase slips to the dissipation. We identify a set of critical disorder and interaction strengths for which such critical momentum vanishes, separating a fluid regime from an insulating one. We relate our observation to the predicted zero-temperature superfluid-Bose glass transition.
