On the smoothness of multi center coplanar black hole and membrane horizons

We study the differentiability of the metric and other fields at any of the horizons of multi center Reissner-Nordstrom black hole solutions in $d \ge 5$ and of multi center $M2$ brane solutions. The centers are distributed in a plane in transverse space, hence termed coplanar. We construct the Gaussian null co-ordinate system for the neighborhood of a horizon by solving the geodesic equations in expansions of (appropriate powers of) the affine parameter. Organizing the harmonic functions that appear in the solution in terms of what can be called generalized Gegenbauer polynomials is key to obtaining the solution to the geodesic equations in a compact and manageable form. We then compute the metric and other fields in the Gaussian null co-ordinate system and find that the differentiability of the coplanar solution is \emph{identical to} the differentiability of the collinear solution (centers distributed on a line in transverse space). The results of this paper thus run counter to a suggestion in the literature that posits reduction in the degree of smoothness to accompany reduction in symmetries. We end the paper with a conjecture on the degree of smoothness of the most general multi center solution, the one with centers distributed arbitrarily and hence possessing no transverse spatial isometries.

On the smoothness of multi-M2 brane horizons

We calculate the degree of horizon smoothness of multi- $M2$-brane solution with branes along a common axis. We find that the metric is generically only thrice continuously differentiable at any of the horizons. The four-form field strength is found to be only twice continuously differentiable. We work with Gaussian null-like co-ordinates which are obtained by solving geodesic equations for multi-$M2$ brane geometry. We also find different, exact co-ordinate transformations which take the metric from isotropic co-ordinates to co-ordinates in which metric is thrice differentiable at the horizon. Both methods give the same result that the multi-$M2$ brane metric is only thrice continuously differentiable at the horizon.

Toric Kahler metrics and AdS_5 in ring-like co-ordinates

Stationary, supersymmetric supergravity solutions in five dimensions have Kahler metrics on the four-manifold orthogonal to the orbits of a time-like Killing vector. We show that an explicit class of toric Kahler metrics provide a unified framework in which to describe both the asymptotically flat and asymptotically AdS solutions. The Darboux co-ordinates used for the local description turn out to be ''ring-like.'' We conclude with an Ansatz for studying the existence of supersymmetric black rings in AdS.

Flowing with Eight Supersymmetries in M-Theory and F-theory

We consider holographic RG flow solutions with eight supersymmetries and study the geometry transverse to the brane. For both M2-branes and for D3-branes in F-theory this leads to an eight-manifold with only a four-form flux. In both settings there is a natural four-dimensional hyper-Kahler slice that appears on the Coulomb branch. In the IIB theory this hyper-Kahler manifold encodes the Seiberg-Witten coupling over the Coulomb branch of a U(1) probe theory. We focus primarily upon a new flow solution in M-theory. This solution is first obtained using gauged supergravity and then lifted to eleven dimensions. In this new solution, the brane probes have an Eguchi-Hanson moduli space with the M2-branes spread over the non-trivial 2-sphere. It is also shown that the new solution is valid for a class of orbifold theories. We discuss how the hyper-Kahler structure on the slice extends to some form of G-structure in the eight-manifold, and describe how this can be computed.
