Given integers a,b>1 with logba irrational, we investigate the connection between the conjectured asymptotic equidistribution of digits in the base-b expansion of an and the (non-)Diophantine properties of the number θa,b=logba.
It is well known that different preparations of a mixed state cannot be distinguished by a measurement of that state. Yet we show that some other experiments let us make this distinction despite a very general belief that this would not be possible. Issues in quantum cryptography that prompted this work are only briefly mentioned in this letter.
We investigate the so-called persistence problem of Sloane, exploiting connections with the dynamics of circle maps and the ergodic theory of Zd actions. We also formulate a conjecture concerning the asymptotic distribution of digits in long products of finitely many primes whose truth would, in particular, solve the persistence problem. The heuristics that we propose to complement our numerical studies can be thought in terms of a simple model in statistical mechanics.
Given a sequence of pairs of spin-one half particles in the singlet state, assume that Alice measures the normalized projections along some vector of the spins of one vector per pair along that vector while Bob measures the normalized projections along some vector of the spins of the other member of each pair. Then Quantum Mechanics, or QM, lets one evaluate the correlation of the projections along these two vectors as minus the cosinus of the angle between said vectors; we assume that all vectors are chosen in a fixed plane. Assuming Classical Microscopic Realism, or CMR, there exist also normalized projection pairs of the spins of the pairs of particles along some other pair of vectors. Assuming QM and MR, we also have that the correlations of the projections along the other vectors as minus the cosinus of the angle between the extra vectors. Assuming Locality,i.e., the impossibility of any effect of an event on another event when said events are spatially separated, beside QM and MR, the theory of Bell lets one deduce various violations of some inequalities at some choices of quadruplets of the vectors that have been chosen. Our main result is the existence of quadruplets where at least one of the said inequalities is violated if one only assumes QM, MR and some very mild further hypotheses. These weak hypotheses only concern the behavior of correlations that we use near special quadruplets. We thus get versions of Bell's theorem that are strictly stronger than the original one and in particular do not assume Locality.
We revisit the computation of correlations of spin projections onto unit vectors for spin-1/2 particles in Quantum Mechanics. We then choose one of the Boole inequalities that, as we recall, must be obeyed by collections of sequences of normalized spin-1/2 projections onto unit vectors that belong to, say, the plane that is orthogonal to the classical trajectory or to the three dimensional space. Next we define the concept of being a-p for i-indexed sequences of spin-1/2 particles: it turns out that a sequence of spin-1/2 particles is a-p if and only if the particles behave as if they had indeed been prepared (in the usual sense) to have definite spins +1 or -1 along the axis a, the sequence of signs being pre-determined. The a-p property is formulated in a way abstract enough to let one generalize it and we define the concept of being a-p and b-p. However, using our chosen Boole inequality we prove that no particle sequence can be both a-p and b-p when a and b are not co-linear. We next consider two modifications of Quantum Mechanics: - The first one by assuming both Weak Realism, the weakest form of Realism needed to develop any main theorem in Bell's Theory, and Locality. - The second one by assuming Weak Realism and an hypothesis that turns out to be none else than (relativistic) Causality extended to cover as well the observable values that make sense only if one assumes Weak Realism. In both cases we arrive at the conclusion that in the EPRB setting where successive pairs of spin-1/2 particles are prepared in the so-called singlet state, one of these particles sequences is both a-p and b-p and a and b are the opposite of the vectors respectively used to project the spin of the other particle and to get the Realism-based alternate value for a projection. Thus the usual discussions of Bell's inequalities under such hypotheses do not even make physical sense.
We review the computation of correlations of successive projections of the spin onto axes for spin-1/2 particles and EPRB pairs (in the Singlet state). We assume forms of Realism (at least as general as the Predictive Hidden Variables in the classical Bell's Theory), to review one particle correlations before we further assume Locality and analyze EPRB pairs. To our surprise, we find that the Abstract Bell Inequalities with three or four axes cannot have physical meaning i.e., two spin projections cannot belong to one particle or some correlations that one would need cannot be evaluated. A recent version of Bell's Theory without Locality turns out to be unaffected by our results that refocus the open issues on "realism" rather than "local realism", inviting us to leave locality alone so to speak.
We prove versions of the Bell and the GHZ Theorems that do not assume Locality but only the Effect After Cause Principle (EACP) according to which for any Lorentz observer the value of an observable cannot change because of an event that happens after the observable is measured. We show that the EACP is strictly weaker than Locality. As a consequence of our results, Locality cannot be considered as the common cause of the contradictions obtained in all versions of Bell's Theory. All versions of Bell's Theorem assume Weak Realism according to which the value of an observable is well defined whenever the measurement could be made and some measurement is made. As a consequence of our results, Weak Realism becomes the only hypothesis common to the contradictions obtained in all versions of Bell's Theory. Usually, one avoids these contradictions by assuming Non-Locality; this would not help in our case since we do not assume Locality. This work indicates that it is Weak Realism, not Locality, that needs to be negated to avoid contradictions in microscopic physics, at least if one refuses as false the de Broglie-Bohm Hidden Variable theory because of its essential violation of Lorentz invariance.

This work indicates that it is Weak Realism, not Locality, that needs to be negated to avoid the contradictions in microscopic Physics associated to Bell's Theory, at least if one refuses as false the de Broglie-Bohm Hidden Variable theory because of its essential violation of Lorentz invariance. This paper completes with much more details the genuine Bell Theorem part of a previous paper. That paper also offered a treatment of the GHZ entanglement, a treatment which did not suffer from the lack of clarity of the definition of the EACP.
Pecora and Carroll presented a notion of synchronization where an (n-1)-dimensional nonautonomous system is constructed from a given n-dimensional dynamical system by imposing the evolution of one coordinate. They noticed that the resulting dynamics may be contracting even if the original dynamics are not. It is easy to construct flows or maps such that no coordinate has synchronizing properties, but this cannot be done in an open set of linear maps or flows in Rn, n≥2. In this paper we give examples of real analytic homeomorphisms of R2 such that the non-synchronizability is stable in the sense that in a full C0 neighborhood of the given map, no homeomorphism is synchronizable.
We prove that for continuous maps on the interval, the existence of an n-cycle, implies the existence of n-1 points which interwind the original ones and are permuted by the map. We then use this combinatorial result to show that piecewise affine maps (with no zero slope) cannot be infinitely renormalizable.
Consider the two-parameter family of real analytic maps Fa,b:x↦x+a+2πbsin(2πx) which are lifts of degree one endomorphisms of the circle. The purpose of this paper is to provide a proof that for any closed interval I, the set of maps Fa,b whose rotation interval is I, form a contractible set.
This is an outline of work in progress. We study the conjecture that the topological entropy of a real cubic map depends ``monotonely'' on its parameters, in the sense that each locus of constant entropy in parameter space is a connected set. This material will be presented in more detail in a later paper.
