Topological entropy of a rational map over a complete metrized field

We prove that the topological entropy of any dominant rational self-map of a projective variety defined over a complete non-Archimedean field is bounded from above by the maximum of its dynamical degrees, thereby extending a theorem of Gromov and Dinh-Sibony from the complex to the non-Archimedean setting. We proceed by proving that any regular self-map which admits a regular extension to a projective model defined over the valuation ring has necessarily zero entropy. To this end we introduce the e-reduction of a Berkovich analytic space, a notion of independent interest.

When do two rational functions have locally biholomorphic Julia sets?

In this article we address the following question, whose interest was recently renewed by problems arising in arithmetic dynamics: under which conditions does there exist a local biholomorphism between the Julia sets of two given one-dimensional rational maps? In particular we find criteria ensuring that such a local isomorphism is induced by an algebraic correspondence. This extends and unifies classical results due to Baker, Beardon, Eremenko, Levin, Przytycki and others. The proof involves entire curves and positive currents.

The arithmetic of polynomial dynamical pairs

We study one-dimensional algebraic families of pairs given by a polynomial with a marked point. We prove an "unlikely intersection" statement for such pairs thereby exhibiting strong rigidity features for these pairs. We infer from this result the dynamical André-Oort conjecture for curves in the moduli space of polynomials, by describing one-dimensional families in this parameter space containing infinitely many post-critically finite parameters.

Links of sandwiched surface singularities and self-similarity

We characterize sandwiched singularities in terms of their link in two different settings. We first prove that such singularities are precisely the normal surface singularities having self-similar non-archimedean links. We describe this self-similarity both in terms of Berkovich analytic geometry and of the combinatorics of weighted dual graphs. We then show that a complex surface singularity is sandwiched if and only if its complex link can be embedded in a Kato surface in such a way that its complement remains connected.

Classification of special curves in the space of cubic polynomials

We describe all special curves in the parameter space of complex cubic polynomials, that is all algebraic irreducible curves containing infinitely many post-critically finite polynomials. This solves in a strong form a conjecture by Baker and DeMarco for cubic polynomials. We also prove that an irreducible component of the algebraic curve consisting of those cubic polynomials that admit an orbit of any given period and given multiplier is special if and only if the multiplier is 0.

The dynamical Manin-Mumford problem for plane polynomial automorphisms

Let $f$ be a polynomial automorphism of the affine plane. In this paper we consider the possibility for it to possess infinitely many periodic points on an algebraic curve $C$. We conjecture that this happens if and only if $f$ admits a time-reversal symmetry; in particular the Jacobian $\mathrm{Jac}(f)$ must be a root of unity. As a step towards this conjecture, we prove that the Jacobian of $f$ and all its Galois conjugates lie on the unit circle in the complex plane. Under mild additional assumptions we are able to conclude that indeed $\mathrm{Jac}(f)$ is a root of unity. We use these results to show in various cases that any two automorphisms sharing an infinite set of periodic points must have a common iterate, in the spirit of recent results by Baker-DeMarco and Yuan-Zhang.

Distribution of postcritically finite polynomials

We prove that Misiurewicz parameters with prescribed combinatorics and hyperbolic parameters with (d - 1) distinct attracting cycles with given multipliers are equidistributed with respect to the bifurcation measure in the moduli space of degree d complex polynomials. Our proof relies on Yuan's equidistribution results of points of small heights, and uses in a crucial way Epstein's transversality results.

Valuation spaces and multiplier ideals on singular varieties

We generalize to all normal complex algebraic varieties the valuative characterization of multiplier ideals due to Boucksom-Favre-Jonsson in the smooth case. To that end, we extend the log discrepancy function to the space of all real valuations, and prove that it satisfies an adequate properness property, building upon previous work by Jonsson-Mustaţă. We next give an alternative definition of the concept of numerically Cartier divisors previously introduced by the first three authors, and prove that numerically Q-Cartier divisors coincide with Q-Cartier divisors for rational singularities. These ideas naturally lead to the notion of numerically Q-Gorenstein varieties, for which our valuative characterization of multiplier ideals takes a particularly simple form.

A refinement of Izumi's Theorem

We improve Izumi's inequality, which states that any divisorial valuation v centered at a closed point 0 on an algebraic variety Y is controlled by the order of vanishing at 0. More precisely, as v ranges through valuations that are monomial with respect to coordinates in a fixed birational model X dominating Y, we show that for any regular function f on Y at 0, the function v--> v(f)/\ord_0(f) is uniformly Lipschitz continuous as a function of the weight defining v. As a consequence, the volume of v is also a Lipschitz continuous function. Our proof uses toroidal techniques as well as positivity properties of the images of suitable nef divisors under birational morphisms.

Holomorphic self-maps of singular rational surfaces

We give a new proof of the classification of normal singular surface germs admitting non-invertible holomorphic self-maps and due to J. Wahl. We then draw an analogy between the birational classification of singular holomorphic foliations on surfaces, and the dynamics of holomorphic maps. Following this analogy, we introduce the notion of minimal holomorphic model for holomorphic maps. We give sufficient conditions which ensure the uniqueness of such a model.

Theorie ergodique des fractions rationnelles sur un corps ultrametrique

We make the first steps towards an understanding of the ergodic properties of a rational map defined over a complete algebraically closed non-archimedean field. For such a rational map R, we construct a natural invariant probability measure m_R which reprensents the asymptotic distribution of preimages of non-exceptional point. We show that this measure is exponentially mixing, and satisfies the central limit theorem. We prove some general bounds on the metric entropy of m_R, and on the topological entropy of R. We finally prove that rational maps with vanishing topological entropy have potential good reduction.

Valuations and plurisubharmonic singularities

We extend to higher dimensions some of the valuative analysis of singularities of plurisubharmonic (psh) functions developed by the last two authors. Following Kontsevich and Soibelman we describe the geometry of the space V of all normalized valuations on C[x_1,...,x_n] centered at the origin. It is a union of simplices naturally endowed with an affine structure. Using relative positivity properties of divisors living on modifications of C^n above the origin, we define formal psh functions on V, designed to be analogues of the usual psh functions. For bounded formal psh functions on V, we define a mixed Monge-Ampere operator which reflects the intersection theory of divisors above the origin of C^n. This operator associates to any (n-1)-tuple of formal psh functions a positive measure of finite mass on V. Next, we show that the collection of Lelong numbers of a given germ u of a psh function at all infinitely near points induces a formal psh function u' on V called its valuative transform. When ϕis a psh Holder weight in the sense of Demailly, the generalized Lelong number nu_ϕ(u) equals the integral of u' against the Monge-Ampere measure of the valuative transform of ϕ. In particular, any generalized Lelong number is an average of valuations. We also show how to compute the multiplier ideal of u and the relative type of u with respect to ϕin the sense of Rashkovskii, in terms of the valuative transforms of u and ϕ.
