Table as a Modality for Large Language Models

To migrate the remarkable successes of Large Language Models (LLMs), the community has made numerous efforts to generalize them to the table reasoning tasks for the widely deployed tabular data. Despite that, in this work, by showing a probing experiment on our proposed StructQA benchmark, we postulate that even the most advanced LLMs (such as GPTs) may still fall short of coping with tabular data. More specifically, the current scheme often simply relies on serializing the tabular data, together with the meta information, then inputting them through the LLMs. We argue that the loss of structural information is the root of this shortcoming. In this work, we further propose TAMO, which bears an ideology to treat the tables as an independent modality integrated with the text tokens. The resulting model in TAMO is a multimodal framework consisting of a hypergraph neural network as the global table encoder seamlessly integrated with the mainstream LLM. Empirical results on various benchmarking datasets, including HiTab, WikiTQ, WikiSQL, FeTaQA, and StructQA, have demonstrated significant improvements on generalization with an average relative gain of 42.65%.

Pore network model of evaporation in porous media with continuous and discontinuous corner films

During evaporation in porous media, two types of corner films are distinguished. A continuous corner film is connected to the bulk liquid, while a discontinuous one is not. To disclose their effects on evaporation in porous media, a pore network model with both continuous and discontinuous corner films is developed, which considers the capillary and viscous forces as well as the effects of corner films on the threshold pressures of pores. The capillary valve effect induced by the sudden geometrical expansion between the small and large pores is also taken into account in the model. The developed pore network model agrees well with the evaporation experiment with a quasi 2D micro model porous medium, in terms of not only the variation of the liquid saturation in each pore but also the variation of the total evaporation rate. The pore network models that neglect the corner films or the liquid viscosity are also compared with the experiment so as to shed light on the roles of the corner films. The continuous corner films, which contribute to sustain the high evaporation rate, can be interrupted to be the discontinuous ones not only by the gas invasion into pores but also by the capillary scissors effect due to the local convex topology of the solid matrix.

Bayesian nonparametric tests via sliced inverse modeling

We study the problem of independence and conditional independence tests between categorical covariates and a continuous response variable, which has an immediate application in genetics. Instead of estimating the conditional distribution of the response given values of covariates, we model the conditional distribution of covariates given the discretized response (aka "slices"). By assigning a prior probability to each possible discretization scheme, we can compute efficiently a Bayes factor (BF)-statistic for the independence (or conditional independence) test using a dynamic programming algorithm. Asymptotic and finite-sample properties such as power and null distribution of the BF statistic are studied, and a stepwise variable selection method based on the BF statistic is further developed. We compare the BF statistic with some existing classical methods and demonstrate its statistical power through extensive simulation studies. We apply the proposed method to a mouse genetics data set aiming to detect quantitative trait loci (QTLs) and obtain promising results.

Wetting and Diffusion of Water on Pristine and Strained Phosphorene

Phosphorene, a newly fabricated two-dimensional (2D) nanomaterial, have exhibited promising application prospect in biology. Nonetheless, the wetting and diffusive properties of bio-fluids on phosphorene are still elusive. In this study, using molecular dynamics (MD) simulations, we investigated the structural and dynamic properties of water on pristine and strained phosphorene. The MD simulations illustrated that the diffusion of water molecules on the phosphorene surface is anisotropic, while strain-enhanced diffusion is clearly present which arises from strain-induced smooth of the energy landscape. The contact angle of water droplet on phosphorene exhibited a nonmonotonic variation with the transverse strain. The structure of water on transverse stretched phosphorene was demonstrated to be different from that on longitudinal stretched phosphorene. Moreover, we discovered that the contact angle of water on strained phosphorene is proportional to the quotient of longitudinal and transverse diffusion coefficients of interfacial water. These findings would offer helpful insights in potential ways of manipulating the wetting and transport of water at nanoscale, and in future bio-applications of phosphorene.
