On the vanishing of twisted $L$-functions of elliptic curves over rational function fields

We investigate in this paper the vanishing at $s=1$ of the twisted $L$-functions of elliptic curves $E$ defined over the rational function field $\mathbb{F}_q(t)$ (where $\mathbb{F}_q$ is a finite field of $q$ elements and characteristic $\geq 5$) for twists by Dirichlet characters of prime order $\ell \geq 3$, from both a theoretical and numerical point of view. In the case of number fields, it is predicted that such vanishing is a very rare event, and our numerical data seems to indicate that this is also the case over function fields for non-constant curves. For constant curves, we adapt the techniques of Li and Donepudi--Li who proved vanishing at $s=1/2$ for infinitely many Dirichlet $L$-functions over $\mathbb{F}_q(t)$ based on the existence of one, and we can prove that if there is one $χ_0$ such that $L(E, χ_0, 1)=0$, then there are infinitely many. Finally, we provide some examples which show that twisted $L$-functions of constant elliptic curves over $\mathbb{F}_q(t)$ behave differently than the general ones.

One-level density and non-vanishing for cubic $L$-functions over the Eisenstein field

We study the one-level density for families of L-functions associated with cubic Dirichlet characters defined over the Eisenstein field. We show that the family of $L$-functions associated with the cubic residue symbols $χ_n$ with $n$ square-free and congruent to 1 modulo 9 satisfies the Katz-Sarnak conjecture for all test functions whose Fourier transforms are supported in $(-13/11, 13/11)$, under GRH. This is the first result extending the support outside the \emph{trivial range} $(-1, 1)$ for a family of cubic L-functions. This implies that a positive density of the L-functions associated with these characters do not vanish at the central point $s=1/2$. A key ingredient in our proof is a bound on an average of generalized cubic Gauss sums at prime arguments, whose proof is based on the work of Heath-Brown and Patterson.

Non-vanishing for cubic $L$--functions

We prove that there is a positive proportion of $L$-functions associated to cubic characters over $\mathbb{F}_q[T]$ that do not vanish at the critical point $s=1/2$. This is achieved by computing the first mollified moment using techniques previously developed by the authors in their work on the first moment of cubic $L$-functions, and by obtaining a sharp upper bound for the second mollified moment, building on work of Lester-Radziwill, which in turn develops further ideas from the work of Soundararajan, Harper, and Radziwill-Soundararajan. We work in the non-Kummer setting when $q \equiv 2\pmod{3}$, but our results could be translated into the Kummer setting when $q\equiv 1\pmod{3}$ as well as into the number field case (assuming the Generalized Riemann Hypothesis). Our positive proportion of non-vanishing is explicit, but extremely small, due to the fact that the implied constant in the upper bound for the mollified second moment is very large.

The mean values of cubic L-functions over function fields

We obtain an asymptotic formula for the mean value of L-functions associated to cubic characters over F_q[t]. We solve this problem in the non-Kummer setting when q=2 (mod 3) and in the Kummer case when q=1 (mod 3). The proofs rely on obtaining precise asymptotics for averages of cubic Gauss sums over function fields, which can be studied using the theory of metaplectic Eisenstein series. In the non-Kummer setting we display some explicit cancellation between the main term and the dual term coming from the approximate functional equation of the L-functions.

The distribution of $\mathbb{F}_q$-points on cyclic $\ell$-covers of genus $g$

We study fluctuations in the number of points of $\ell$-cyclic covers of the projective line over the finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$ when $q \equiv 1 \mod \ell$ is fixed and the genus tends to infinity. The distribution is given as a sum of $q+1$ i.i.d. random variables. This was settled for hyperelliptic curves by Kurlberg and Rudnick, while statistics were obtained for certain components of the moduli space of $\ell$-cyclic covers by Bucur, David, Feigon and Lalín. In this paper, we obtain statistics for the distribution of the number of points as the covers vary over the full moduli space of $\ell$-cyclic covers of genus $g$. This is achieved by relating $\ell$-covers to cyclic function field extensions, and counting such extensions with prescribed ramification and splitting conditions at a finite number of primes.

Abelian surfaces over finite fields with prescribed groups

Let A be an abelian surface over F_q, the field of q elements. The rational points on A/\F_q form an abelian group A(\F_q) \simeq \Z/n_1\Z \times \Z/n_1 n_2 \Z \times \Z/n_1 n_2 n_3\Z \times\Z/n_1 n_2 n_3 n_4\Z. We are interested in knowing which groups of this shape actually arise as the group of points on some abelian surface over some finite field. For a fixed prime power q, a characterization of the abelian groups that occur was recently found by Rybakov. One can use this characterization to obtain a set of congruences modulo the integers $n_1, n_2, n_3, n_4$ on certain combinations of coefficients of the corresponding Weil polynomials. We use Rybakov's criterion to show that groups \Z/n_1\Z \times \Z/n_1 n_2 \Z \times \Z/n_1 n_2 n_3\Z \times\Z/n_1 n_2 n_3 n_4\Z do not occur if n_1 is very large with respect to n_2, n_2, n_4 (Theorem \ref{splitbound}), and occur with density zero in a wider range of the variables (Theorem \ref{splitbound-average}).

Distribution of squarefree values of sequences associated with elliptic curves

Let E be a non-CM elliptic curve defined over Q. For each prime p of good reduction, E reduces to a curve E_p over the finite field F_p. For a given squarefree polynomial f(x,y), we examine the sequences f_p(E) := f(a_p(E), p), whose values are associated with the reduction of E over F_p. We are particularly interested in two sequences: f_p(E) =p + 1 - a_p(E) and f_p(E) = a_p(E)^2 - 4p. We present two results towards the goal of determining how often the values in a given sequence are squarefree. First, for any fixed curve E, we give an upper bound for the number of primes p up to X for which f_p(E) is squarefree. Moreover, we show that the conjectural asymptotic for the prime counting function π_{E,f}^{SF}(X) := #{p \leq X: f_p(E) is squarefree} is consistent with the asymptotic for the average over curves E in a suitable box.

One-level density of families of elliptic curves and the Ratios Conjectures

Using the ratios conjectures as introduced by Conrey, Farmer and Zirnbauer, we obtain closed formulas for the one-level density for two families of L-functions attached to elliptic curves. From those closed formulas, we can determine the underlying symmetry types of the families. The one-level scaling density for the first family corresponds to the orthogonal distribution as predicted by the conjectures of Katz and Sarnak, and the one-level scaling density for the second family is the sum of the Dirac distribution and the even orthogonal distribution. This seems to be a new phenomenon, caused by the fact that the curves of the second families have odd rank. Then, there is a trivial zero at the central point which accounts for the Dirac distribution, and also affects the remaining part of the scaling density which is then (maybe surprisingly) the even orthogonal distribution. The one-level density for this second family was studied in the past for test functions with Fourier transforms of small support, but since the Fourier transforms of the even orthogonal and odd orthogonal distributions are undistinguishable for small support, it was not possible to identify the distribution with those techniques. This can be done with the ratios conjectures, and it sheds more light on "independent" and "non-independent" zeroes and the repulsion phenomenon.

Statistics for ordinary Artin-Schreier covers and other $p$-rank strata

We study the distribution of the number of points and of the zeroes of the zeta function in different $p$-rank strata of Artin-Schreier covers over $\F_q$ when $q$ is fixed and the genus goes to infinity. The $p$-rank strata considered include the ordinary family, the whole family, and the family of curves with $p$-rank equal to $p-1.$ While the zeta zeroes always approach the standard Gaussian distribution, the number of points over $\F_q$ has a distribution that varies with the specific family.

Distribution of zeta zeroes of Artin--Schreier curves

We study the distribution of the zeroes of the zeta functions of the family of Artin-Schreier covers of the projective line over $\mathbb{F}_q$ when $q$ is fixed and the genus goes to infinity. We consider both the global and the mesoscopic regimes, proving that when the genus goes to infinity, the number of zeroes with angles in a prescribed non-trivial subinterval of $[-π,π)$ has a standard Gaussian distribution (when properly normalized).

Pseudoprime reductions of Elliptic curves

Let $E$ be an elliptic curve over $\F_p$ without complex multiplication, and for each prime $p$ of good reduction, let $n_E(p) = | E(\F_p) |$. Let $Q_{E,b}(x)$ be the number of primes $p \leq x$ such that $b^{n_E(p)} \equiv b\,({\rm mod}\,n_E(p))$, and $π_{E, b}^{\rm pseu}(x)$ be the number of {\it compositive} $n_E(p)$ such that $b^{n_E(p)} \equiv b\,({\rm mod}\,n_E(p))$ (also called elliptic curve pseudoprimes). Motivated by cryptography applications, we address in this paper the problem of finding upper bounds for $Q_{E,b}(x)$ and $π_{E, b}^{\rm pseu}(x)$, generalising some of the literature for the classical pseudoprimes \cite{Erdos56, Pomerance81} to this new setting.

Statistics for traces of cyclic trigonal curves over finite fields

We study the variation of the trace of the Frobenius endomorphism associated to a cyclic trigonal curve of genus g over a field of q elements as the curve varies in an irreducible component of the moduli space. We show that for q fixed and g increasing, the limiting distribution of the trace of the Frobenius equals the sum of q+1 independent random variables taking the value 0 with probability 2/(q+2) and 1, e^{(2pi i)/3}, e^{(4pi i)/3} each with probability q/(3(q+2)). This extends the work of Kurlberg and Rudnick who considered the same limit for hyperelliptic curves. We also show that when both g and q go to infinity, the normalized trace has a standard complex Gaussian distribution and how to generalize these results to p-fold covers of the projective line.

The fluctuations in the number of points of smooth plane curves over finite fields

In this note, we study the fluctuations in the number of points of smooth projective plane curves over finite fields $\mathbb{F}_q$ as $q$ is fixed and the genus varies. More precisely, we show that these fluctuations are predicted by a natural probabilistic model, in which the points of the projective plane impose independent conditions on the curve. The main tool we use is a geometric sieving process introduced by Poonen.
