Waveform Optimization for MIMO Joint Communication and Radio Sensing Systems with Training Overhead

In this paper, we study optimal waveform design to maximize mutual information (MI) for a joint communication and (radio) sensing (JCAS, a.k.a., radar-communication) multi-input multi-output (MIMO) downlink system. We consider a typical packet-based signal structure which includes training and data symbols. We first derive the conditional MI for both sensing and communication under correlated channels by considering the training overhead and channel estimation error (CEE). Then, we derive a lower bound for the channel estimation error and optimize the power allocation between the training and data symbols to minimize the CEE. Based on the optimal power allocation, we provide optimal waveform design methods for three scenarios, including maximizing MI for communication only and for sensing only, and maximizing a weighted sum MI for both communication and sensing. We also present extensive simulation results that provide insights on waveform design and validate the effectiveness of the proposed designs.

Packing (2k+1−1)(2^{k+1}-1)-order perfect binary trees into (\emph{k}+1)-connected graph

Let G=(V,E)G=(V,E) and HH be two graphs. Packing problem is to find in GG the largest number of independent subgraphs each of which is isomorphic to HH. Let U⊂VU\subset{V}. If the graph G−UG-U has no subgraph isomorphic to HH, UU is a cover of GG. Covering problem is to find the smallest set UU. The vertex-disjoint tree packing was not sufficiently discussed in literature but has its applications in data encryption and in communication networks such as multi-cast routing protocol design. In this paper, we give the kind of (k+1)(k+1)-connected graph G′G' into which we can pack independently the subgraphs that are each isomorphic to the (2k+1−1)(2^{k+1}-1)-order perfect binary tree TkT_k. We prove that in G′G' the largest number of vertex-disjoint subgraphs isomorphic to TkT_k is equal to the smallest number of vertices that cover all subgraphs isomorphic to TkT_k. Then, we propose that TkT_k does not have the \emph{Erdős-Pósa} property. We also prove that the TkT_k packing problem in an arbitrary graph is NP-hard, and propose the distributed approximation algorithms.
