How to accomplish inflation and a constant dark energy density

It is commonly assumed that the Lagrangian of multi-field theories of gravity contains the sum of kinetic terms of scalar fields. However, we propose here the Lagrangian contains not the sum but the quotient of kinetic terms. With this novel change, we find the inflationary universe can be acquired with two scalars without the slow-roll approximation. On the other hand, a constant dark energy density can also be achieved with two scalars while without the need of Einstein cosmological constant.

Exact black hole solutions with non-linear electrodynamic field

We construct exact black hole solutions to Einstein gravity with nonlinear electrodynamic field. In these solutions, there are in general four parameters. They are physical mass, electric charge, cosmological constant and the coupling constant. Due to the presence of coupling constant, these solutions differ significantly from the Reissner-Nordstrom-de Sitter solution in Einstein-Maxwell gravity with a cosmological constant. In the first place, some of them are endowed with a topological defect on angle $θ$. Secondly, for the extreme charged black holes, the electric charge can be much larger or much smaller than the mass by varying the coupling constant. Thirdly, for very large coupling constant, the radius of event horizon for some black holes approaches $2M$ regardless of the electric charge. Lastly, some black holes are asymptotically neither flat nor de Sitter (or anti-de Sitter).

On static and spherically symmetric solutions of Starobinsky model

We investigate the problem of static and spherically symmetric solutions in the Starobinsky gravity model. By extending the Lichnerowicz and Israel theorems, William Nelson have demonstrated that the Schwarzschild solution is the unique static, spherically symmetric, and asymptotically flat black hole solution in the Starobinsky model. However, Hong L{ü} et al find that there are sign errors in the proof of Nelson. This raises the problem whether Nelson's proof is correct or not. In order to answer this question, we explore the corresponding solutions by using the Taylor series expansion method. We find that Nelson's conclusion is indeed correct despite the flaw in the proof.

Cosmic evolution of scalar fields with multiple vacua: generalized DBI and quintessence

We find a method to rewrite the equations of motion of scalar fields, generalized DBI field and quintessence, in the autonomous form for\emph{arbitrary} scalar potentials. With the aid of this method, we explore the cosmic evolution of generalized DBI field and quintessence with the potential of multiple vacua. Then we find that the scalars are always frozen in the false or true vacuum in the end. Compared to the evolution of quintessence, the generalized DBI field has more times of oscillations around the vacuum of the potential. The reason for this point is that, with the increasing of speed $\dotϕ$, the friction term of generalized DBI field is greatly decreased. Thus the generalized DBI field acquires more times of oscillations.

Quintessence and phantom emerging from the split-complex field and the split-quaternion field

Motivated by the mathematic theory of split-complex numbers (or hyperbolic numbers, also perplex numbers) and the split-quaternion numbers (or coquaternion numbers), we define the notion of split-complex scalar field and the split-quaternion scalar field. Then we explore the cosmic evolution of these scalar fields in the background of spatially flat Friedmann-Robertson-Walker Universe. We find that both the quintessence field and the phantom field could naturally emerge in these scalar fields. Introducing the metric of field space, these theories fall into a subclass of the multi-field theories which have been extensively studied in inflationary cosmology.

Cyclic universe due to phantom and quintessence

We explore a cyclic universe due to phantom and quintessence fields. We find that, in every cycle of the evolution of the universe, the phantom dominates the cosmic early history and quintessence dominates the cosmic far future. In this model of universe, there are infinite cycles of expansion and contraction. Different from the inflationary universe, the corresponding cosmic space-time is geodesically complete and quantum stable. But similar to the Cyclic Model, the flatness problem, the horizon problem and the large scale structure of the universe can be explained in this cyclic universe.

A Static Spherically Symmetric Solution of the Einstein-aether Theory

By using of the Euler-Lagrange equations, we find a static spherically symmetric solution in the Einstein-aether theory with the coupling constants restricted. The solution is similar to the Reissner-Nordstrom solution in that it has an inner Cauchy horizon and an outer black hole event horizon. But a remarkable difference from the Reissner-Nordstrom solution is that it is not asymptotically flat but approaches a two dimensional sphere. The resulting electric potential is regular in the whole spacetime except for the curvature singularity. On the other hand, the magnetic potential is divergent on both Cauchy horizon and the outer event horizon.

When scalar field is kinetically coupled to the Einstein tensor

We explore the cosmic evolution of a scalar field with the kinetic term coupled to the Einstein tensor. We find that, in the absence of other matter sources or in the presence of only pressureless matter, the scalar behaves as pressureless matter and the sound speed of the scalar is vanishing. These properties enable the scalar field to be a candidate of cold dark matter. By also considering the scalar potential, we find the scalar field may play the role of both dark matter and dark energy. In this case, the equation of state of the scalar can cross the phantom divide, but this can lead to the sound speed becoming superluminal as it crosses the divide, and so is physically forbidden. Finally, if the kinetic term is coupled to more than one Einstein tensor, we find the equation of state is always approximately equal to -1 whether the potential is flat or not, and so the scalar may also be a candidate for the inflaton.

A model of nonsingular universe

In the background of Friedmann-Robertson-Walker Universe, there exists Hawking radiation which comes from the cosmic apparent horizon due to quantum effect. Although the Hawking radiation on the late time evolution of the universe could be safely neglected, it plays an important role in the very early stage of the universe. In view of this point, we identify the temperature in the scalar field potential with the Hawking temperature of cosmic apparent horizon. Then we find a nonsingular universe sourced by the temperature-dependant scalar field. We find that the universe could be created from a de Sitter phase which has the Planck energy density. Thus the Big-Bang singularity is avoided.

Generalized modified gravity with the second order acceleration equation

In the theories of generalized modified gravity, the acceleration equation is generally fourth order. So it is hard to analyze the evolution of the Universe. In this paper, we present a class of generalized modified gravity theories which have the acceleration equation of second order derivative. Then both the cosmic evolution and the weak-field limit of the theories are easily investigated. We find that not only the Big-bang singularity problem but also the current cosmic acceleration problem could be easily dealt with.

Introduction of the generalized Lorenz gauge condition into the vector-tensor theory

We introduce the generalized Lorentz gauge condition in the theory of quantum electrodynamics into the general vector-tensor theories of gravity. Then we explore the cosmic evolution and the static, spherically symmetric solution of the four dimensional vector field with the generalized Lorenz gauge. We find that, if the vector field is minimally coupled to the gravitation, it behaves as the cosmological constant. On the other hand, if it is nonminimally coupled to the gravitation, the vector field could behave as vast matters in the background of spatially flat Friedmann-Robertson-Walker Universe. But it may be not the case. The weak, strong and dominant energy conditions, the stability analysis of classical and quantum aspects would put constraints on the parameters and so the equation of state of matters would be greatly constrained.

Black Holes in the Universe: Generalized Lemaitre-Tolman-Bondi Solutions

We present new exact solutions {which presumably describe} black holes in the background of a spatially flat, pressureless dark matter (DM)-, or dark matter plus dark energy (DM+DE)-, or quintom-dominated universe. These solutions generalize Lemaitre-Tolman-Bondi metrics. For a DM- or (DM+DE)-dominated universe, the area of the black hole apparent horizon (AH) decreases with the expansion of the universe while that of the cosmic AH increases. However, for a quintom-dominated universe, the black hole AH first shrinks and then expands, while the cosmic AH first expands and then shrinks. A (DM+DE)-dominated universe containing a black hole will evolve to the Schwarzschild-de Sitter solution with both AHs approaching constant size. In a quintom-dominated universe, the black hole and cosmic AHs will coincide at a certain time, after which the singularity becomes naked, violating Cosmic Censorship.

Constraining the Lattice Fluid Dark Energy from SNe Ia, BAO and OHD

Sanchez and Lacombe have ever developed a lattice fluid theory based on a well-defined statistical mechanical model. Taking the lattice fluid as a candidate of dark energy, we investigate the cosmic evolution of this fluid. Using the combined observational data of Type Ia Supernova (SNe Ia), Baryon Acoustic Oscillations (BAO) and Observational Hubble Data (OHD), we find the best fit value of the parameter in the model, $A = -0.3_{-0.1}^{+0.1}$. Then the cosmological implications of the model are presented.

Cosmological models with Lagrange Multiplier Field

We first consider the Einstein-aether theory with a gravitational coupling and a Lagrange multiplier field, and then consider the non-minimally coupled quintessence field theory with Lagrange multiplier field. We study the influence of the Lagrange multiplier field on these models. We show that the energy density evolution of the Einstein-aether field and the quintessence field are significantly modified. The energy density of the Einstein-aether is nearly a constant during the entire history of the Universe. The energy density of the quintessence field can also be kept nearly constant in the matter dominated Universe, or even exhibit a phantom-like behavior for some models. This suggests a possible dynamical origin of the cosmological constant or dark energy. Further more, for the canonical quintessence in the absence of gravitational coupling, we find that the quintessence scalar field can play the role of cold dark matter with the introduction of a Lagrange multiplier field. We conclude that the Lagrange multiplier field could play a very interesting and important role in the construction of cosmological models.

Scalar Field, Four Dimensional Spacetime Volume and the Holographic Dark Energy

We explore the cosmic evolution of a scalar field which is identified with the four dimensional spacetime volume. Given a specific form for the Lagrangian of the scalar field, a new holographic dark energy model is present. The energy density of dark energy is reversely proportional to the square of the radius of the cosmic null hypersurface which is present as a new infrared cutoff for the Universe. We find this holographic dark energy belongs to the phantom dark energy for some appropriate parameters in order to interpret the current acceleration of the Universe.

Ghosts and Stability of Asymptotical Safe Gravity in the Minkowski Background

We investigate the problems of ghosts and stability in the framework of asymptotical safe theory of gravity in the Minkowski background. Within one loop corrections, we obtain explicitly the constraints on the coupling parameters. Applying them to the coupling constant recently-obtained at the fixed point, we find that the corresponding theory is both ghost-free and stable. Our results can be easily generalized to high order corrections.

Modified Entropic Force

The theory of statistical thermodynamics tells us the equipartition law of energy does not hold in the limit of very low temperatures. It is found the Debye model is very successful in explaining the experimental results for most of the solid objects. Motivated by this fact, we modify the entropic force formula which is proposed very recently. Since the Unruh temperature is proportional to the strength of gravitational field, so the modified entropic force formula is an extension of the Newtonian gravity to weak field. On the contrary, General Relativity extends Newtonian gravity to strong field case. Corresponding to Debye temperature, there exists a Debye acceleration g_D. It is found the Debye acceleration is g_D=10^{-15}N kg^{-1}. This acceleration is very much smaller than the gravitational acceleration 10^{-4}N kg^{-1} which is felt by the Neptune and the gravitational acceleration 10^{-10}N kg^{-1} felt by the Sun. Therefore, the modified entropic force can be very well approximated by the Newtonian gravity in the solar system and in the Galaxy. With this Debye acceleration, we find the current cosmic speeding up can be explained without invoking any kind of dark energy.

Modified gravity in Arnowitt-Deser-Misner formalism

Motivated by Horava-Lifshitz gravity theory, we propose and investigate two kinds of modified gravity theories, the f(R) kind and the K-essence kind, in the Arnowitt-Deser-Misner (ADM) formalism. The f(R) kind includes one ultraviolet (UV) term and one infrared (IR) term together with the Einstein-Hilbert action. We find that these two terms naturally present the ultraviolet and infrared modifications to the Friedmann equation. The UV and IR modifications can avoid the past Big-Bang singularity and the future Big-Rip singularity, respectively. Furthermore, the IR modification can naturally account for the current acceleration of the Universe. The Lagrangian of K-essence kind modified gravity is made up of the three dimensional Ricci scalar and an arbitrary function of the extrinsic curvature term. We find the cosmic acceleration can also be naturally interpreted without invoking any kind of dark energy. The static, spherically symmetry and vacuum solutions of both theories are Schwarzschild or Schwarzschild-de Sitter solution. Thus these modified gravity theories are viable for solar system tests.

Unified dark energy and dark matter from a scalar field different from quintessence

We explore unification of dark matter and dark energy in a theory containing a scalar field of non-Lagrangian type, obtained by direct insertion of a kinetic term into the energy-momentum tensor. This scalar is different from quintessence, having an equation of state between -1 and 0 and a zero sound speed in its rest frame. We solve the equations of motion for an exponential potential via a rewriting as an autonomous system, and demonstrate the observational viability of the scenario, for sufficiently small exponential potential parameter λ, by comparison to a compilation of kinematical cosmological data.
