Time Dilation and the Equivalence of Inertial Frames

It is well known that simultaneity within an inertial frame is defined in relativity theory by a convention or definition. This definition leads to different simultaneities across inertial frames and the well known principle of relativity of simultaneity. The lack of a universal present implies the existence of past, present and future as a collection of events on a four dimensional manifold or continuum wherein three dimensions are space like and one dimension is time like. However, such a continuum precludes the possibility of evolution of future from the present as all events exist forever so to speak on the continuum with the tenses past, present and future merely being perceptions of different inertial frames. Such a far-reaching ontological concept, created by a mere convention, is yet to gain full acceptance. In this paper, we present arguments in favour of an absolute present, which means simultaneous events are simultaneous in all inertial frames, and subscribe to evolution of future from the present.

Comment on Analysis of Scissors Cutting Paper at Super Luminal Speeds

In a recent paper, it was demonstrated that the popular legend that scissors can cut paper at super luminal speeds is indeed correct. In this comment we make this additional observation that when the cutting speed is super luminal, the direction of the cutting of the paper as observed by observers in the inertial frame stationary with respect to the blade of the scissors and the direction of the cutting of the paper as observed by observers in the inertial frame stationary with respect to the paper are opposite. This follows from the relativity of simultaneity, and the fact that space-time points that are separated beyond reach at sub-luminal speeds exhibit reversal in time order as observed by different inertial frames. The fact that the paper was cut in opposite directions as observed by the paper and scissors, can be interesting facet for students of Physics.

A constructive formulation of the one-way speed of light

A formulation of the one-way speed of light in three-dimensional Euclidean space is derived by a constructive approach. This formulation is consistent with the result of the Michelson-Morley experiment in that the harmonic mean of the outward and return speeds is equal to c, the standard value for the speed of electromagnetic radiation in vacuum. It is also shown that a shift in synchronization, proportional to the distance along the line of motion, renders this speed a constant along all directions.

Observations on the motion of a Tachyon

Some aspects of the motion of a tachyon is discussed. It is shown that the inertial frame Sigma-Prime around which the tachyon switches the direction of its motion, does not observe any movement of the tachyon at all. Inertial frames on either side of Sigma-Prime observe the tachyon to be moving at very large speeds but in opposite direction. Sigma-Prime itself observes only a sudden appearance and immediate disappearance of a long rod like object. Thus unbounded speeds in either direction give the same result in the limit. This suggests that negative numbers as a physical quantity are not meaningful. Subtraction can be used integral to a formula but the final result has to be interpreted with a positive answer. This means the abstract quantity -infinity indicating an unbounded negative number is not meaningful. The situation is also compared with Tan (Pi/2)+ and Tan(Pi/2)-. The conclusion is that in the limit, travel at unbounded speed is direction independent and gives the connotation of many identities to the same particle.
