Phase-Imprinting of Bose-Einstein Condensates with Rydberg Impurities

We show how the phase profile of Bose-Einstein condensates can be engineered through its in- teraction with localized Rydberg excitations. The interaction is made controllable and long-range by off-resonantly coupling the condensate to another Rydberg state with laser light. Our technique allows the mapping of entanglement generated in systems of few strongly interacting Rydberg atoms onto much larger atom clouds in hybrid setups. As an example we discuss the creation of a spatial mesoscopic superposition state from a bright soliton. Additionally, the phase imprinted onto the condensate using the Rydberg excitations is a diagnostic tool for the latter. For example a condensate time-of-flight image would permit reconstructing the pattern of an embedded Rydberg crystal.

Generalised Dicke non-equilibrium dynamics in trapped ions

We explore trapped ions as a setting to investigate non-equilibrium phases in a generalised Dicke model of dissipative spins coupled to phonon modes. We find a rich dynamical phase diagram including superradiant-like regimes, dynamical phase-coexistence and phonon-lasing behaviour. A particular advantage of trapped ions is that these phases and transitions among them can be probed in situ through fluorescence. We demonstrate that the main physical insights are captured by a minimal model and consider an experimental realisation with Ca+ ions trapped in a linear Paul trap.

Dynamical phases and intermittency of the dissipative quantum Ising model

We employ the concept of a dynamical, activity order parameter to study the Ising model in a transverse magnetic field coupled to a Markovian bath. For a certain range of values of the spin-spin coupling, magnetic field and dissipation rate, we identify a first order dynamical phase transition between active and inactive {\em dynamical phases}. We demonstrate that dynamical phase-coexistence becomes manifest in an intermittent behavior of the bath quanta emission. Moreover, we establish the connection between the dynamical order parameter that quantifies the activity, and the longitudinal magnetization that serves as static order parameter. The system we consider can be implemented in current experiments with Rydberg atoms and trapped ions.

Antiblockade in Rydberg excitation of an ultracold lattice gas

It is shown that the two-step excitation scheme typically used to create an ultracold Rydberg gas can be described with an effective two-level rate equation, greatly reducing the complexity of the optical Bloch equations. This allows us to solve the many-body problem of interacting cold atoms with a Monte Carlo technique. Our results reproduce the Rydberg blockade effect. However, we demonstrate that an Autler-Townes double peak structure in the two-step excitation scheme, which occurs for moderate pulse lengths as used in the experiment, can give rise to an antiblockade effect. It is observable in a lattice gas with regularly spaced atoms. Since the antiblockade effect is robust against a large number of lattice defects it should be experimentally realizable with an optical lattice created by CO$_{2}$ lasers.
